Vernacular Love Affair
Finally the relationship between photography and painting is turned around. After all the photography that looks like painting, for the first time a painting that looks like a photograph. ‘Uncle Theo’ this small panel is called. Uncle Theo himself is not in the picture, just a small piece of a wall in his house, painted by his cousin Thijs Jansen. Size 20 x 15 cm, oil and acrylic paint. So smartly done in a conceptual sense. A tiny homage to the tiny and vernacular. Done awfully skilled as well, your eyes keep on checking: is the postcard taped on the painted piece, wall paper or is it itself painted too? I came across ‘Uncle Theo’ in January at the Realism Art Fair in Amsterdam, gallery Fred Wagemans Kunstruimte. Did not buy it then. But it keeps coming back. Now I write about it. Must have been sold already. Let’s try and mail the gallery. Though it is Sunday I get a quick reply: It is still for sale. The first photograph I buy!
