Stack, Roll n’ Tie

About the project International Competition by Archstorming in collaboration with Lets Build my School, a UK registered NGO. Status : Finalist Entry Done in Collaboration with Kinjal Vora and Saurabh Madan Site : Marsassoum, Senegal, Africa Area : 1188 sqm Brief : Design of a school building with innovative, sustainable and easy to execute construction techniques which can be a value addition to the existing natural building knowledge for the community of Marsassoum and can be replicated in the future.

Design Intent The design aims at creating a learning environment, with local and economical materials - Bamboo, Mud, tyres and implementing them in innovative and modular construction techniques which are easy to understand and can be replicated by the community. The structure is a framework of modular bamboo and tyre columns, which are readily available on site. The building facilitates air circulation catering to the hot and humid climate of Marsassoum; through various punchers in the mass forming voids which inhabit the entrance, kitchen garden and coral for students to grow their own food. Each classroom with a clerestory and ample window enables an airy and healthy space for learning. Sloping roofs of the structure lead rainwater into a storage tank to be used in the kitchen, toilets and garden area.

Stack, Roll n’ Tie This construction manual is a step by step guide to constructing a typical room using the proposed construction techniques.

4. Preparing Bamboo Column

1. Marking and Digging

6. Bamboo Columns

4c. Bamboo column base detail to be referred from the sketch Bamboo dia = 9cm

1a. After Marking the foundations accurately, start digging the Foundation. Dimensions = 50cm (wide) x 50cm

6a. Add the Tyre from the top of the Bamboo columns. Follow the following steps for ramming the tyre:

(depth)

iii. Avoid hitting the tyre rim and the Bamboo column

d l o

5a. Pour back the mix in the PCC finished trench: 12 cm per course.

5b. Start ramming with a large rammer (200 cm2) and then with a smaller one (100 cm2). Ram till a clear sharp sound is heard.

iv. Pound the tyre in all the directions

7a. 1 brick thick (400mm) Adobe brick wall to be laid from top of the rammed earth foundation

3a.

5d. Once the entire course is completed, sprinkle some water on the previous course and proceed further in the same way for the next layers.

5e. When the last course is completed, check again the level of the top layer with a string line and scrape the top if in case it is too high.

vi. Tamp the dirt level with the top rim

6d. Repeat the process with each layer of the tyre until desired height is achieved

7. Brick Wall

Gather and sieve all the soil that is dug out 3b. Soil to be mixed with Sand and 5% Cement. Proportion : to every 500 litres of soil, add 200 litres of sand and 1 bag (50kg) cement. 3c. The Soil, sand and cement mixture has be mixed dry first (atleast 2 times) to get a homogenous mixture. Add water to get the optimum moisture content and mix it again 2 or 3 times.

ii. Use Sledge hammer to pack dirt into the sides of the tyre

f

2b. PCC layer to be cured for a period of 14 days.

3. Preparing Soil for Rammed Earth

i. Use your hands to push dirt into the sides of the tyre top rim

h

e r e h

2a. A 150mm thick PCC layer to be poured in the foundation trench. (Ratio for Cement : sand : aggregate = 1 : 3 : 6)

7b. A DPC Course of tarpaulin to be laid atleast 150 mm high from the ground level

8. Rammed Earth floor

10a. Horizontal Bamboo beams tied to Bamboo columns using coir ropes

9. Rolls of straw loam

8a. Floor to be levelled with a 3-5cm layer of sand 8b. Several layers of 5cm mixture of Earth concrete is poured on top of the levelled surface EARTH CONCRETE: 3 volume of gravel + 2 volume of earth + minimum water ( to reach a semi plastic state) Each layer is rammed by feet first and then using a rammer

8c. Final layer of 1.5 - 2 cm thk Earth mortar is applied. EARTH MORTAR: 4 Volume of sand + 1 vol of Earth

h d l o

9c. Using a 25-30 mm split /full non structural bamboo, the bamboo is rolled on the straw mat loam layer such that it wraps around the bamboo to form a 120 dia straw loam roll. This process can be done off site or simultaneously with the floor.

9d. The rolls are then installed in between the bamboo columns

Slightest cracks are filled and fixed before the final coating

8d. Linseed oil is then applied 4-5 times to give rigidity to the floor surface and to make it water proof.

03 CELEBRATING THE formal-informal INTERFACE About the project Type : Academic Work - Undergraduate Thesis Typology : Institutional, Public Space Guide : Ashley Fialho ` The project aims to critically examine understandings of urban informal settlements and the role of new architectural development, in order to unsettle and unpick some of the underlying assumptions that may contribute to the m arginalizing effects of the discourses.

The thesis focuses on indentifing the new development and redevelopment projects happening in the city in the public sector and how can they contibute and aid to the development of the surrounding. This thesis aims to develope a model where in the new projects in the city benefit not only the prime users but also the context. The site selected for intervention is a fringe between the new developement the Phoenix Marketcity mall and the adjoining informal settlements.

N

Site Plan

. CURATING THE INTERFACE

The site offers a ridgid edge between two physical realmsFormal and Informal. Treating the edge will be the first step initiating negotiations between the two entities

Tracing the physical condition to establish newer connections and also to reveal and connect to the past

Understand the role of the interface as a edge condition and identify space for opportunity

Making the edge condition permeable in the urban fabric

Harnessing existing everyday sociospatial divergences observed and mapped on site

Providing structures and social spaces that could accommodate and cater the invisible yet strong community networks

: A sustainable model for the city

About the project

Design Intent

Typology : Warehouse, Farmers Market, Public Plaza Site : Uran, Raigarh, Maharashtra Area : 6231.5 sqm Type : Academic Work (Semester IX, AD) In collaboration with Saurabh Madan Guide : Ar. Shashank Sathe Brief : To propose a developement plan of for a site selected as a part of an Industrial Township in Uran.

The project questions the typology of a Logistic hub warehouse through the lens of aesthetic, planning, sustainaibilty, equity and the future needs of the city. It keeps in mind the developements that will happen around the site by providing recreational progams and basic amenities for the future residents. The design also empowers the local farmers of Uran by creating an economic setup through organic farms and urbanfarming workshops. Thus, the project becomes a Multi Functional premise where different stratas of the society interact and aims to become a Net zero waste model for the future.
