THEORISING SECOND CITIES OF INDIA Mysore experiences heavy traffic in the central part, thus making the roads congested. So road widening projects are planned and one such major project is the Irwin road widening, which is considered as one of the busiest roads in the city.

Camber not shown as it’s not relevant to the purpose of discussion.

Design provocations : • How can the architecture of redeveloped mixed use building typologies in inner city conditions shape the affordances required for living, work and tourism? • How can buildings that are partially demolished be retrofitted to address the new urban conditions emerging from road widening projects? 10

A textile museum is designed in Paithan, Maharashtra. The intent of this project is to provide fluidity to such spaces and introduce spaces of pause throughout the main exhibit areas, which is achieved by creating passage like spaces. General arrangement drawings, staircase, toilet, door-window details and other details are worked out.

WHAT IS A HOME?

The site is located in Charkop, Kandivali. The existing home and plot to be designed are marked red in the right side plan drawing. The narrative drawing on the next page shows the daily routine activities done by the old couple.

Site plan by class

19 Sectional perspective

The design strategy mainly focuses on different types of light and sound qualities entering the space. The vaults not only provide sound variation but also an interesting form.

20

The site located in Sewri experiences mild sounds of twigs, grass, wind, etc. which emphasizes the silence and isolation of the space. As you climb up the rock, the silence also increases in the zone. While the site is surrounded by a waterbody in front, an upcoming metro construction is in process nearby.

21

WETLAND CONSERVATORY

DESIGN PROVOCATIONS What is sound? How does it work in harmony with respect to the site? Why does it plays an important role in shaping the space? What are the other factors responsible for affecting it and how can it be eliminated?

DESIGN INTENT thus focuses on bringing in a layer of sound so as to add energy and liveliness to the existing site. This is achieved by dripping water from drain chains that hit various materials like pebbles, still water, etc.

23 Cut plan at 10m

The passages function as training and education units. They also function as release pockets for the people working in the conservatory.

The library would have a spiral wooden staircase, that leads to the underground library eliminating the outside sound. The stairs would thus bring a mild wooden sound of people walking down it. The cascading structure, thus would create a comfortable working space for the people.

RECREATIONAL CENTER

Light and glass experiment

The site is in Malad, Mumbai. The design focuses on creating spectrum of light to create a recreational center for people working in the nearby commericial offices. The centre consists of a cafe, chromotherapy floor and a library on each floor respectively. Light through various glass interfaces was studied to understand its effect on surfaces, which was taken further in constructing the recreational space.

Section and all floor plans

Each floor rotates by a certain angle, so that the light hits the wall and creates the desired effect. For the chromotherapy space prisms are used. The library has plain glass and a small balcony where mild quality of light reflections can be seen.
