WATER AS IDENTITY OF THE CITY The case of Mumbai
Thesis | Fifth Year Guide: Shirish Joshi Mumbai was always under tidal influence and its coastline was fluid with the sea. The inhabitants have always attempted to tame water according to their needs and requirements rather than allowing it to flow in its natural state. The desire to acquire more land for trade and commerce has positioned land against the sea. Although the city emerged from water, it no longer looks water as a resource. The changing pattern of human habitance has become a threat to the state of water in the city. Thus, in a dense fabric like Mumbai, where the state of water has been dynamic and its presence exists at various scales, the thesis intends to explore the altering relationship between human intervention and water. By examining vulnerabilities of the city’s water system at various scales, it intends to intervene within a part of the system sensitively. Can this intervention become one of the paradigms to deal with other water bodies in the city? It further intends to suggest a glossary that illustrates various approaches and strategies to deal with other water bodies in the city, thereby envisaging water as the identity of the city.
CONCLUSION - Current State of Water bodies in the City Thus, it can be concluded that concretization, haphazard development, discharging untreated domestic waste into water bodies, encroaching and claiming reserved lands, dumping debris and burning it near reserved lands, washing clothes etc. are some of the major threats to the water bodies in the city. Human activities have altered, manipulated and disturbed the natural state of most of the water bodies in the city. It is high time to change our attitude towards water bodies in the city before the remaining water bodies disappear or cannot be revived at all.

ARCHITECTURAL INTENT Although riverfront parks, trails, promenades, ecological restoration of the river are a part of the Poisar River’s Development Plan, the primary intent of the design
Proposed Transformation of the river edge at various sites: 1. Kranti Nagar
is to envision a new decentralized approach to wastewater treatment and demonstrate how the city’s treatment infrastructures can blend in with existing as well as new public programs and develop an environment friendly and a socially sustainable growth pattern for neighborhoods.
GOALS:

DESIGN INTENT - Neighborhood Level With no formal access to the plot and the river edges being blocked by high retaining walls, the design intends to transform this plot which is perceived as a neglected or dead space into a public park that has the ability to expand, adapt and enhance community connections to the rivers. A landscape for contemplation, awareness and activity - relaxation on or near the rivers will also have treatment infrastructures accessible to the public, such that community engagement becomes a driving force in revitalizing a valuable natural resource.

MUNICIPAL SCHOOL The existing Municipal school (Primary School) on site is redesigned. This simple RCC grid was chosen as the functions and programs were specific and didnt require any large span or advanced structural system. The resdesigned school houses 10 classrooms, offices, AV Room, staff room and a playing room. The school also has a basketball court on the rear side

3. Defining the programs and placing them
During normal days, the basketball court can be used by the childrens for playing. But during heavy rains, when the court gets submerged under water, the central courtyard becomes active. The courtyard of the school is designed to accumulate rain water so that after a heavy downpour, there is a gigantic, pool-like puddle just waiting for the kids to come out and play. The roof is a green roof as it allows for passive cooling and keeps the classrooms and other functions underneath a little less hotter than outside temperature.

BARA IMAMBARA
Precinct MasterPlan An Urban Design Studio in Lucknow Sem VII | Fourth Year Guides: Aneerudha Paul, Shirish Joshi and Sonal Sundararajan The Bara Imambara precinct is one of the oldest precinct of Lucknow. It is home to many important historical buildings of the city. Few of them being Rumi Darwaza, Bara Imambara, Chota Imambara, Picture Gallery, Hussainabad Clock tower, Jama Masjid and Sathkhanda. Thus, it attracts a large number of tourists as well as pilgrims during festivals like Eid, Muharram and Ramzan. These monuments were built in response to the Gomti. This relationship has faded since the decline of the Nawabi Era. It has been neglected by the administration as well as the locals. The intent of the masterplan is to draw energies from the historical inner city towards the river Gomti, while reviving the relatioship of these monuments with the Gomti. The master plan intends to : 1. Making the precinct pedestrian friendly. 2. Providing markets, cafeterias, shaded open spaces and green cover. 3. Reviving other historical monuments along with Bara Imambara.

MUSAFIRKHANA
Dormitory and Urban Housing in Lucknow
Sem VII | Fourth Year Guides: Shirish Joshi The site lies opposite to the Hussainabad Clock Tower complex, and is surrounded by major historical monuments. The project acts as a thoroughfare between the historical inner city of Lucknow and the Gomti River. It attempts to reactivate this historical precinct by directing energies from the inner city to the river , gradually, by means of market spaces, shopping arcades, pavilions, plaza, shared street and a pedestrian friendly network around the precinct. Eateries, a performance stage, admin offices are few of the ancillary functions.

Community Infrastructures in the Ajmer Dargah
Sem VI | Third Year Guides: Prashant Prabhu and Rohan Shivkumar DO WE NEED HOLES? Ajmer has a rich history with a rapidly growing urban fabric. The Dargah exists within a dense and over brimming market place. Within the built forms of the Dargah lie many gathering and recreational spaces for the public. These two fabrics are disjuncted by a long peripheral wall that wraps around the Dargah. The intervention aims to make this peripheral wall as a porous membrane that allows the city to flow into the Dargah. It houses community infrastructures such as workshops, community kitchen, lecture halls, exhibition space and leisure areas which can be easily accessed by the city. Balconies, courtyards, multifarious fenestration are an integral part of the design.

WORKER’S COLONY
Dormitory and Clinic in Aarey Colony
Sem III | Second Year Guides: Apurva Parikh and Ginella George The tabela worker’s is one of the largest communities of Aarey milk colony. The shelters provided to these people are extremely unhygienic, tiny and dingy. Thus, it becomes important for the government, to provide them with better and adequate facilities and health care. The long rectangular building that sits amidst the green cover of Aarey Colony has dormitories for the worker’s and their families along with a public clinic.

BUILDING STORIES
Measured Drawings Exhibition
Sem IV | Second Year The history of architectural documentation in India dates back to the early 1900’s where there was an attempt at recording specific architectures of the sub-continent, primarily to identify and define the various styles of architecture. Building Stories - Chakrata takes shape from two such forms of drawings; the miniature paintings in India and the contemporary graphic novels as seen in the works of Chris Ware and many others. Our drawings are an attempt to use the conventional plans, sections and elevations and script the lives of the people living in a place called Chakrata, using the many ways of telling a story in the graphic novel form. This transcendence allows for the architectural plans, sections, elevations and axonometric views to be used as containers of life and the break of the frame as that of time. Rhythms of life now get documented within the very meticulously constructed wall sections.

TALLEST STABLE STRUCTURE
CHAIR
PLAY OBJECTS
Material : Wooden Stick Using wooden pattis of size {600mm x 25mm x 12.5mm} and creating the tallest possible structure was the aim of the studio. No interlocking was allowed. Only lap joints were used. The trapezoidal structure was erected firm and stiff by bracing the legs firmly forming smaller triangles which provided an excellent strength to the structure.
Material : Corrugated sheet We normally see chairs made of steel, plastic or wood. The exercise here was to use corrugated sheets, understanding its strength and building a chair that could atleast withstand a weight of an average human. Triangle is the most stable structure. Breaking the polygon into smaller triangles and using the corrugated sheet into the best orientation was the strategy we applied.
Material : Bamboo Bamboo has a higher compressive strength than wood, brick, or concrete and a specific tensile strength that rivals steel. Each group had to build a play object using bamboo stciks by simply using various joints and knots. The specific play object was derived from a particular type of action caried in space. In this case it was ‘circular motion.
MACHINES OF SOUND Subject : Annual Workshop Guide : Chinmay Shidore, Pranav Thole, Pramada Jagtap and Mihir Desai Investigating sonic capacities of domestic prototype. The 3 day building technology focused on the creation of simple machines and devices, which aimed at disrupting, complimenting or unveiling sonic capacities of the spaces in which they were installed.
LANDSCAPE ANALYSIS Subject : Landscape Guide : Arjun Sharma and Shilpa Chandavarkar Any hilly terrain within the city of Mumbai was supposed to be chosen as a site. The site extent was 1km x 1km. Analyzing the transformation and evolution of the site by producing various data maps was the primary task of this exercise. Also, a report stating the cause of change in urban fabric of the place was expected.
PETS Subject : Introductory Workshop Guide : Sonal Sundararajan and Kausik Mukhopadhay The workshop aimed at visualizing and experiencing space through the imagination of a virtual pet. Each member in the group had an imagination of a sanitized pet which evolved through sketches and photos. The installation was an attempt to portray the imagination of the sanitized pet.
ILLUMINATING OBJECT
SEAT FOR SHORT VISIT
MODEL MAKING
Subject : Allied Design Guide : Hussain Indorewala and George Jacob
Subject : Allied Design (Esquisse) Guide : Hussain Indorewala and George Jacob
Subject : Building Construction Guide : Sonal Sundararajan
Step one of the exercise was to understand the potentials of wood, concrete and steel. The next challenge was to design an illuminating object which had to be an amalgamation of the above three materials. A concrete box with a wooden cover and a metal base was designed. Using electrical circuits, we managed to insert lighting within the box.
The 3 day esquisse which involved allied design as well as building technology studio focused on designing a seat which can be used for a short visit. Studying movement patterns and mentality of people around the selected site and then designing a seat which people coming for a short visit can use was the primary objective of the esquisse.
Model making is vital in Architecture. Making physical model helps an architect to explore the potentials of the project as well as it helps the brain think in 3 Dimensional imagination. Reading plans and sections of a building and making a 3D model was all the exercise was about.
