Stage 2 A case study 

 

We were asked to choose any residence in India and do a case study. The points were similar to the analysis in stage 1. This was done to get a better understanding of any space available.

Proximity matrix

Stage 5 application of research methodology  1.

2. 3.

 1.

 1.

 1.

Placement of rooms: Kept in mind the privacy levels and age factors. example- the guest room or grandparents room has been kept on the ground floor. Dining and kitchen placed near by each other. Private room have been placed on the first floor. Interaction level: There is not much interaction among the family members, therefore a family lounge has been added to increase the level of interaction Vastu: Vastu is not a major issue in the family; still kept in mind to an extent. Example-Puja placed facing east. Design approach: Most members of family are adults and are working, thus affecting the privacy and interaction levels.

Stage 6 bubble diagrams ď Ž

ď Ž

I zoned the required spaces into private, semi private, semi public and public I first drew them out with pencil.

 

Red indicates private Purple indicates semi private

Pros: • division of entryto public area and to semi public. • Well segregated zoning • Puja near guest room/grand parent’s room

 

Blue indicates semi public Green indicates public

Pros: • division of entry- to public area and to semi public. • Well segregated zoning

Cons: • Relationship between spaces not defined clearly

Cons: • central kitchen-direct ventilation issue

Pros: • division of entry- to public area and to semi public. • Well segregated zoning Cons: • Relationship between spaces not defined clearly • Bubble diagram not clear

Pros: • division of entry- to public area and to semi public. • Well segregated zoning Cons: • central kitchen-direct ventilation issue • Puja becomes a central area which no longer remains private

Final bubble diagram This bubble diagram was the best in my case. It has the least number of cons. The main entry divides the plan into public and semi public areas. The zoning clearly defines the spatial relationship among the spaces. Ventilation and daylighting has been given wherever necessary. .The dining and kitchen are in major adjacency for the family and guests to sit together and have an interactive session.

Pros: well segregated zoning Natural light and ventilation wherever required Closeness of spaces defined.

Cons: Too heavy on the ground floor

Stage 7 Schematic zoning explorations and final zoning  

This was the part which took my maximum time. I had been struggling to get my schematic zoning in place for more than 2 weeks. This was because my mother’s office had to incorporated in the same given space.

Pros: • Pantry with family lounge • Laundry near shaft • Good buffer areas • Natural light in rooms Cons: • Beam interrupting head height of staircase to enter terrace. • Staircase near master bedroom

Pros: • Washroom b=near shaft • Pantry near family lounge Cons: • Beam interrupting head height of staircase to enter terrace. • Staircase near sibling's room • Lot of waste space • Pantry and laundry together

Pros: • Huge rooms Cons: • Beam interrupting head height of staircase to enter terrace. • Looks cluttered • Pantry away from lounge.

stage 8 Design development stage cad plans with pros and cons

 Pros: • Well segregated into its zones- private, semi private, semi public and public. • A long connected balcony. • Enough space for circulation. • Good transition from semi private to private areas with the help of curved wardrobes.  Cons: • The staircase to the terrace has to be figured out. • Doors of the balcony are too boring. • A lot of waste area in the living and dining area • The tailor’s room furniture has to be well laid out. • Too much window in living area. • No linear circulation from kitchen to dining.

 Pros: • Well segregated into its zones- private, semi private, semi public and public. • A long connected balcony. • Tailor’s room is well laid out. • Enough space for circulation. • Good transition from semi private to private areas with the help of curved wardrobes.  Cons: • The staircase to the terrace still has to be figured out. • A lot of waste area in the living and dining area • No linear circulation from kitchen to dining.

Stage 9 design brief

Concept of the house is based on 3 factors-

Light: To design a space according to the natural light to use minimum resources but get maximum benefit

Behavior and atmosphere The family do not sit together but rather go in their rooms. A recreational space has been given. Men of the house are working and usually stay on tour. Utility therefore becomes the main point to focus on.

Connectivity of spaces This is essential how one space leads into the other. Any space should not be disturbed by the other space.

Color theme Colors tell us the nature of a person, mood of a person, mood of a space

Principles of design Vases on the table act as black and white theme breaker Monochromatic theme is each room

There is harmony in terms of color and symmetry of spaces.

Symmetric and balanced spaces

The two rooms almost act as mirror images of each other

Asymmetric space

Learning outcome         

It is important to complete every step before reaching to the next stage. Research methodology does not finish at one step but continues till the end. Use auto cad and sketch up to show the layouts and models. Daly activities effect a residence design. Clearances with furniture and fixtures is taken care of. Analyze different layouts and make changes for a better output. Paper model helps to imagine how a space would look like roughly. How to arrange pictures and text in a concept board or concept sheet Work with patience and handle emergency situations
