STUDIO SPOTLIGHT: COMMUNICATION DESIGN STUDIO AND THE IMAGE The image is integral to the communication process; from logos, illustrations and photography, to interactive symbols, film and animation. In almost every studio of the communication degree, the image plays a vital role in the answering of a design problem. Images — whether still, moving or responsive — can define emotions, relay a sense of space and place, clarify complex information and tell stories. At Monash students can explore the full communication potential of the image in both the core studio program and the suite of electives they can choose from. These include illustration, photographic art direction, interactive media, digital audio video, 3D design and visualisation, animation and many more. The image is a flexible and explorative way of expressing ideas and communicating key concepts within a visually cluttered communication landscape. At Monash, we are keen to harness its potential such that our graduates contribute to a global cultural dialogue in constructive, meaningful and inventive ways.

Graduate work Feature student Hannah Dunlop

Communication Design has a range of core subjects and electives offering students the opportunity to hone their skills in areas such as typography, publication design, illustration and poster design as well as a comprehensive course in art & design theory. In particular, typography was a memorable subject – where we had the chance to work on a poster design project with John Warwicker. It was an absolute joy being able to get away from the computer and actually create something that didn’t have a ‘ctrl + z’ option. There’s nothing more exciting than watching something come to fruition right in front of your eyes. What did I enjoy most about the course? The people that you meet, and the contacts that you make at MADA can be incredibly important for creative communities such as design, where the industry is fairly intimate.

STUDIO SPOTLIGHT: 2ND YEAR INDUSTRIAL DESIGN STUDIO 3D printing is changing the design process. By allowing designers to quickly and cheaply produce bespoke models, 3D printing lets them easily test, review and analyse their ideas and designs. 3D printers work by generating layer upon layer of a given material to build a physical object based on a digital model. In their second year industrial design studio, students make their own 3D printer in a project that brings together principles of innovation, craftsmanship and sustainability. Students repurpose parts primarily sourced from old inkjet and laser printers, and combine them with some specialised circuitry and a few custom-built pieces printed by a 3D printer we prepared earlier. Not only do students discover how technology and innovation can drive their design practice, they also develop an appreciation for the physical, hands on aspects of design. And they get easy access to a 3D printer at the end of it!

Graduate work Feature student Barton Smith

Soon after graduating, my university and personal projects in interaction design gained exposure online and kickstarted my career in a field I never planned to pursue. I was lucky enough to land jobs that allowed me to work in China, Germany and the USA, where I currently live. Working at Fuseproject has been a great experience, and somewhere I always wanted to work (I had applied twice before!). Outside of work, I take up all San Francisco has to offer — whether that’s snowboarding in Lake Tahoe or enjoying great food with the amazingly talented individuals in this city.
