Nick and SaRA
A Mid-Century Love Affair Photography by Sarah Yates

Just as wedding photography has changed over the years, so has engagement photography. A great example of this is Sara and Nick’s engagement session by Sarah Yates. Sara and Nick came to her wanting something different. Inspired by W Magazine’s spread on Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Yates contacted a past client and asked if they could make use of their mid-century style home. Next Yates styled the couple and the house prior to the photography. When asked if she would like to do more theme engagement sessions, Yates enthusiastically responded, “Yes! It’s fantastic when a couple has a great idea of a vision and I can collaborate to make it happen for them.” So, you see, your engagement session is only limited by your imagination! •

lmost every time I surf cable TV, I pass by a show about bridezillas, the excesses of zealous wedding planning and the supreme importance of material things. These shows portray a skewed view of a tiny minority. We’ve never met a bridezilla. And we have the highest respect for all the wedding planners we know who unfailingly offer great advice and service. These shows would have you believe that choosing just the right shade of green for your linens guarantees your wedding will be a success. But maybe there’s something else that takes a wedding from great to extraordinary. We have filmed our fair share of weddings from a simple affair in the backyard to a three-day $1 million extravaganza. As we think back, there have always been some common elements that take a wedding from great to extraordinary. Even brides on a tight budget can afford them. They are thoughtfulness, consideration, compassion and kindness. We recall one couple whose favorite uncle was a farmer in rural Canada. His lifestyle didn’t often call for a sports jacket or a suit. He was hesitant to attend the wedding because he was afraid he’d mar the elegance. Jenn and Adam said, “Don’t worry Uncle Jack. Please just come. It will all work out.” When Uncle Jack arrived, they had 5 jackets, all in the right size, hanging in the closet.
TAKING YOUR WEDDING FROM GREAT TO EXTRAORDINARY
Mary and Tim had enjoyed long and happy marriages but each lost their spouse to illness. They felt they had been allowed more happiness than most people know in a lifetime, and did not expect to find that kind of total happiness again. But when they met, a friendship formed, that deepened into love. As their wedding day approached they searched for a way to honor their past spouses, and draw their children and grandchildren together into a new family. They each wrote a heartfelt letter addressed to their families which their respective pastors read before the formal ceremony began. Tim thanked his children for loving and wholeheartedly accepting Mary into their family. He honored the memory of his late wife in his letter by saying, “You can not know the unimaginable joy of seeing the one you
have loved in your children’s faces.” There was not a dry eye in the chapel. Thoughtfulness is not limited to the bride and groom. At another extraordinary wedding, the bride’s family showed great compassion. In the Jewish tradition, the bride and groom are raised on chairs high into the air. Often, the bride’s parents and the groom’s parents are also honored in this fashion. Tom’s parents had amicably divorced years earlier. His mother had remarried and his Dad had a commitment ceremony with his partner. Many guests on the bride’s side were very traditional and religious. How would they react if they knew the situation? So, when it came time to honor the bridal couple’s parents, the bride’s parents were raised high on chairs and had a wonderful time. Then the bride’s parents did something wonderful. In a spontaneous act of compassion, they took Tom’s mother and her current husband by the hand and seated them in the chairs of honor and raised them high. Then, they went over to Tom’s father and his partner. They led them to the center of the room and seated them in the chairs. There was a hush that spread over the 350 guests. Then a cheer and a cry went up, as did Tom’s dad and his partner. This true act of kindness dispelled any awkwardness that anyone may have felt. The party really kicked into high gear. Tom had no words for what his new inlaws had done. They had unconditionally accepted him and his non-traditional family. Kindness and thoughtfulness don’t cost much, but it blesses the one who receives it and the one who gives it. Consideration makes a wedding meaningful, intimate and personal in a way guests will never forget. With the spirit of compassion, your wedding day will be more wonderful than you ever imagined. DAMIAN AND LORRAINE
Stellenbosch, South Africa
Photography by Jean-Pierre Uys Written by Kate Fielder

Dubai, best known as an international hub of tourism and meeting place of the elite, received the unique honor in 2007 as becoming the location where Lorraine and Damian first met, while attending a private function. Though they wouldn’t begin dating for another seventeen months, that was the day that marked the beginning of a romance that would make it’s way across the world, and cement it’s union on November 14, 2009 in Stellenbosch, South Africa. After a fairy tale proposal during a weekend getaway in London (he got down on not one, but both knees!), there would be a great deal of work in planning a wedding to reflect the clean, modern style Lorraine and Damian share. They decided to be married at one of their favorite places in the world, an incredibly romantic wine estate located in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Approximately thirty miles east of Cape Town, Stellenbosch is a beautiful area nestled at the foot of the Cape Fold mountain range and is the second oldest European settlement in the province. Recognizing how complicated it could be to plan a destination wedding; Lorraine sought the aide of Anne Mann, of Wedding Concepts to plan her dream wedding. Lorraine described Anne as an “amazing woman with a flair
for detail. As we were not in South Africa to handle the logistics, Anne was essential in planning the wedding with us from start to finish.”
guests interact and play with props set up along with a photo booth at a pre-ceremony cocktail hour, complete with lounge music by DJ Gary Poole.
Lorraine offers this advice to any couple planning a wedding, “Planning a wedding and getting it right without the stress is not easy. It is well worth the money spent to engage the services of a professional wedding planner. You have access to their wide supplier network, and the decor and design team with you to come up with ideas for your wedding.” In addition to the usual wedding plans, Wedding Concepts really impressed the couple by offering a tailored travel plan for guests, assisting them with transportation to the wedding as well as accommodations so some could extend their stay in South Africa.
The guests began to mingle, the ice officially broke and then when the sun began to set, it was time for the ceremony. Simple and meaningful, it was held out of doors in beautiful African wine country. Green grass below and glowing skies above, Dan Shout serenaded the bride by saxophone as her mother walked her down the aisle in presentation to Damian. The bride wore a phenomenal Barbara Newcomb Hobon gown (a designer based out of Dubai) and the couple exchanged vows they’d written themselves in commitment to each other. All in all, the ceremony itself took no more than ten minutes to complete before Lorraine and Damian became husband and wife!
After all the planning was finished, the decisions were finalized, every touch, moment and irreplaceable detail perfected, the day arrived! It was a three day affair, including a day of relaxation with a cricket match for the men and children, a Spitbraii (whole lamb roasted on a spit) catered by Monty’s and time set aside to truly enjoy the company of good friends and family. When it came time for the big day, Lorraine and Damian further displayed their love for their friends by having the photos all taken before their guests arrived, so as not to keep them waiting. Being photographed by Jean Pierre Uys was an extraordinary experience, his passion and incredible eye stood out for the couple in every picture he took, every moment he captured, every emotion he immortalized. Moments like watching their
As guests were ushered to the reception venue, they were greeted by an otherworldly setting: The couple hired Heidi De Sousa from HDS ManagementOne to arrange the music for the entire event, and she created an incredible line up of musical entertainment for the party. Iridium Project, a six-piece dance band thrilled everyone with their music during the reception as well as South Africa’s number one house DJ, Craig De Sousa. Lorraine said her favorite moment of the entire day was being out on the dance floor with every single person sharing the moment, dancing and celebrating underneath fairy lights and gorgeous large fringed shades suspended overhead. Aside from the dancing, one thing anyone who attends

a wedding remembers is the food, and this menu will not be soon forgotten! Lorraine said that since children were such a big part of her wedding, she wanted to cater to both young and old. She laid out the menu this way: “The adults had a choice between roasted rack of karoo lamb, marinated with wild rosemary and garlic, served with herb crusted lamb shoulder confit, provencal vegetables, dauphinoise potatoes and rosemary jus or herb stuffed chicken supreme, served with fine herb crushed potatoes, drizzled with a pea and mint veloute. The kid menu included homemade grilled chicken burger with pineapple and cheddar served with roasted rosemary potato wedges and crudités with avocado dip. Deserts were one of our big highlights. Instead of serving one desert, we had a variety for our guests to choose from. We had lemongrass and ginger crème brûlée, raspberry cheesecake, amarula mousse & selection of friandise – turkish delight, chocolate truffles, nougat, lavender fudge and candyfloss for the kids.” After eating to their heart’s content, and dancing the night away at what can only be defined as a magical celebration, the happy couple made their way to what they call “Paradise on Earth”: the Conrad Rongali, Maldives Island Resort for their honeymoon.•

REHEARSAL DINNERS Why should I have a rehearsal dinner? When planning a wedding, often the last thought on the bride’s mind is the rehearsal dinner. After all, isn’t the whole point of getting married the wedding ceremony and reception? Sometimes it’s hard to fathom putting energy into planning yet another event. Here are my top 4 reasons why having a rehearsal dinner is important in your wedding celebration: 1.Meeting of the kin Often times the rehearsal dinner is the first time families are meeting each other. Although parents may have been introduced, this less formal event allows the extended families to mix and mingle. Plus it’s great for the wedding party to meet so they are not strangers on the dance floor the next day. 2.Saying thank you The rehearsal dinner is the perfect opportunity to say thank you to family and friends who’ve participated in the planning process. It gives you the opportunity to introduce your bridal party to your family and present any thank you gifts. 3. The groom’s family Traditionally the groom’s family hosts the rehearsal dinner. If your fiancé’s mother would like
WRITTEN BY: KATHY GOODMAN
to be involved in planning the wedding festivities, this is a great project for her. Sharing the planning process allows you to focus on the big day and gives her an event to feel part of the celebration. 4. Quality Time 1 year of planning = 5 hours of celebration on your wedding day. Wow. That’s a pretty big planning:party ratio. A rehearsal dinner is typically 3-4 hours of quality, relaxed time spent with your closest friends and family. For some reason, weddings fly by in the blink of an eye. So add some important time with the people you love most. Who should be invited? Rehearsal dinners can be an intimate evening with the immediate wedding participants or a huge pre-party with everyone who has traveled. At the very least, all of the members involved in the wedding ceremony should be invited to the rehearsal dinner: your bridal attendants plus their spouses or significant others, moms, dads and immediate family members (siblings and grandparents), and parents of any child attendants. If you have a close relationship to your officiant, an invitation can also be extended to him and his spouse. Often wedding guests who have traveled from out-of-town are also invited.
33
What happens at the rehearsal dinner? First and foremost, the rehearsal dinner is a meal. But what really makes it a unique dinner is that your nearest and dearest friends and family are coming together to wish you well as you begin your married lives together. The most notable traditional of rehearsal dinners are the toasts (and roasts) from your friends and family. As the father-of-the-bride, best man and maid-of-honor are slated for wedding day toasts, the rehearsal dinner “opens the mic” to other friends and family. This more intimate gathering is the perfect place to toast the couple and share heartfelt stories and well wishes. Where should a rehearsal dinner be held? The event can be as fancy or casual as you like it. The sky is the limit! It’s great to make the rehearsal dinner contrast to the wedding reception to treat your guests to a completely different experience. Rehearsal dinners are often held in private dining rooms at restaurants but can be hosted at a private home or unique venue. If having your wedding in a destination, think about having it in spot your out-of-town guests would love to visit. Why should I hire a coordinator? Many wedding checklists have the rehearsal dinner as one line item. However, it is an event that does take planning and has many of the same components as your wedding: guest list, venue selection, contract, menu, invitations, seating arrangements, table décor, transportation, timeline, setup, dismantle…. This can be a lot to add to your mile long wedding to-do list. First, a coordinator will give you expert advice on helping you find the perfect venue for the size of your party. This can be a huge benefit for parents that are planning the event from out-of-town. Second, she will design an event that appropriately compliments or contrasts the next day. Third, she will take a mountain of items off your to-do list. By the time you get to the eve of your wedding, you should be relaxed and ready to walk down the aisle. This is what the rehearsal dinner is for! Relax! Enjoy! Celebrate! • Rehearsal Dinner Photography by: Janae Shields

L’ A rt de V ivre
To meet French artist Sabine Andreini is to step into another world; a world filled with dreams, glamour and Joie de Vivre: a passion for life. And truly, what more is a wedding than the fulfillment of a long awaited dream, and a day filled with the joyous celebration of life and love. Sabine’s specialty is creating stunning custom urns and planters for floral arrangements, topiaries, and centerpieces. She is a visionary and brings imagination, energy, and unlimited possibility to her creations. When working with brides, she brings energy, life and imagination to every project. Attention to detail is important, and every piece she creates for a wedding is unique and special. Her approach is to first learn about the emotional aspects of the event, along with the mood and feeling that the bride and groom wish to create. She then incorporates the colors and style of the wedding and creates unique, custom works of art. Sabine’s creativity comes from a place deep within her spirit; a childhood filled with Mediterranean light and the glamour of the French Riviera. She
paints with a palette infused with a patina of color layered upon color that is then burnished to a complex and rich luster. Sabine’s work evokes a sense of history, yet is completely fresh and modern. Her creations are treasures to be cherished long after the wedding and become heirlooms to be passed down through generations. Sabine goes on to explain that people carry within them the dreams of their childhood, the smells, the atmosphere, the colors and imagination, and she take this into consideration as she designs her masterpiece creations for a wedding. Sabine has an impressive clientele, including French design houses, Hotel Sofitel, Il Fornio and the French Ambassador to the US.
She credits her success to her two sons and the importance of family, as Sabine says, “Nothing in life is more important than family”. To find about more about Sabine and her amazing work, call 650-343-9823. • Written by: Kersti Malvre Photographs by Melissa Ann Bagley

Bridal Fashion portraits Making the most of your wedding gown
During the wedding day there is often little time to experiment with multiple locations and the photography process can feel a bit overwhelming and rushed. So, why not take another day and focus on beautiful bridal fashion photography? So much planning goes into this one time “fashion statement”. Celebrate your dress a little more by spending time at your favorite locations and have a professional photographer document how it feels to wear your wedding gown.
Belathee Photography has done just this for many brides, at times traveling to locations across the United States. Some brides like to do their portraits before the wedding day to “get used to” their gown. Other, prefer to have their portraits done after the wedding day when there is less worry about getting the gown dirty.
Many brides incorporate their “Bridal Fashion” portraits into their wedding day album. Some prefer to showcase certain images by framing them. Either way, the bride has a keepsake like no other and a beautiful heirloom to pass down to her own family. •

Becki and Craig St. Helena, California
Photography by: Janae Shields
Becki and Craig first met in 1997 while living in the dorms at Sacramento State. At first they were just friends but by the end of the school year they had begun dating. For the next three years they dated but split up right before graduation. That might have been the end of the story if fate had not stepped in and reunited the couple six years later. On May 30, 2008, Craig proposed to Becki on Pismo Beach at sunset. Becki says, “We laughed, we cried, and we drank a bottle of wine that Craig had brought from home.”. The couple set their wedding date exactly one year after he proposed. They were married on May 30, 2009 at the beautiful Harvest Inn in St. Helena, California. The “first look” between Becki and Craig was the highlight of their day. They took many of their photos before the ceremony itself. But, the hour they spent together, alone for their own photographs was extra special. During this time they were able to be themselves and check in with each other about everyday things. Becki says she didn’t really have a theme in mind for the wedding. She found herself telling vendors, “I want our day to be bright and fun and really us.”. While she did use a “day of” wedding planner, she did the advance planning, leaving the wedding planner to execute her plans on the day of the wedding. After the wedding the two spent ten glorious days at the Sandals Royal Bahamian on Paradise Island in the Bahamas. Congratulations Becki and Craig! HEATHER BIRCHEN AND KENNETH CLAUSMAN Phoenicia, New York
Photography by Angelica Glass Written by Rhee Bevere
She was living in Philly, he was living in New York City. But the first night they met at the Jersey Shore, Heather knew Ken was a keeper. “He kept holding my hand and calling me “honey,” she says. That summer romance in Manasquan kept going for six years until they realized it was time to make it official. Onteora Mountain House in Boiceville, NY was ideal for the Adirondack style she wanted. Once we saw Onteora we stopped looking - it had everything we were looking for! There is nowhere in the Hudson Valley or the Adirondacks that, just a mile up, has an unobstructed view of five different mountain ranges.” Lucky for Heather, she has a crafty bent and a wonderful sense of style. After they found the perfect location for her “Rustic with a Modern Glam Twist” theme, Heather spent the next year on what she calls her personal project. She brought in other crafty family members. Even her aunt and uncle had a project – the tree stump cake stands. “I knew I wanted rustic tree stump cake stands from the moment that I started planning,” she says. “The hardest part was finding cut wood large enough! My aunt contacted the local tree service company in her town in Albany and they were willing to help us out for free. After we had enough wood, we ran into some snags because when birch dries, it cracks. My crafty uncle was able to secure the wood from underneath so that it didn’t crack. Lastly we used wood glue to secure the top to the bottom. I think they turned out amazing!” Even the cake on top of the birch stump followed the theme. Cake designer Maxine of Maxine’s Caterers created a special recipe of apple spice cake with a brown sugar buttercream. A play on her last name, Birch was used for both big and little touches, from the birch covered chalkboards used for table names (“I told my aunt this idea and she had 18 done by the end of the week”) and even a birch escort card holders and vases. Trees were even a big part of all of Heather and Ken’s wedding stationery. Tessa Vasak of Evenstar Paperie did all of the stationery, including save the date announcements, seating cards, and the stickers on the out-of-town hostess boxes. “Tessa got so excited when she found the paper for the background of our invites. It is called “forest floor,” it has amazing pinecones and a little bit of glitter.”
53
Heather herself, with Mom’s help, made most of the other elements throughout the wedding. Moss covered letters, signs, Mason jar hanging lanterns for the church pews, even personalized water bottle labels. But rustic wasn’t the only element – let’s not forget the glam! Heather found the ideal Melissa Sweet gown with purple Miu Miu shoes and Haute Bride accessories. The bridesmaids sported flower fascinators from Twigs & Honey, and even Ken showed some mod with a lavender plaid Burberry tie. Heather’s personal project was definitely a hit with family and guests, and she’s quite proud of all the hard work she and Ken accomplished with the help of family. Heather even started a blog for other Rustic Yet Modern brides called catskillbride.blogspot.com. •

Lauren Christensen of Lo Boheme has always loved creating things and working with her hands. But, it wasn’t until she got married that she realized her true passion. While planning her wedding she began to look for a unique gift for each of her seven bridesmaids. Instead of gifts, she stumbled upon fabulous vintage trims from boarded up millinery houses in Germany and France. As soon as she found these, she knew that she had to do something with them. About a year and a half ago, Lauren decided to take her love of making hair accessories and turn it into a business.
Lo Boheme
Today she finds inspiration all around her. Her favorite source of inspiration is fashion from times past. Her admiration for the craftsmanship of the millinery work of the 1920’s and 1930’s, the elegant sophistication of the way women dressed in the 1950’s, and the bold lines of the 1960’s can all be seen her work. To achieve these different looks, Christensen works with a variety of materials – feathers, rhinestones, brooches, and anything vintage she can get her hands on. She tries to use vintage materials as often as possible. She loves the little imperfections that come with age and quality of
workmanship in the vintage pieces she finds. Her use of vintage pieces means that most of Christensen’s work is one of a kind. What is next for Lo Boheme? Christensen says that Lo Boheme is going to become one stop shopping for the bride with the addition of new pieces. In addition to newly designed hairpieces, she will be featuring bridal sashes and fabulous garters. We can’t wait to see what she comes up with next! Ten Budget Friendly Tips from Little White Book 1. We all know that summer weddings are the most popular. Want a wedding in peak wedding season but simply don’t have the budget to back it up? Consider changing your day to a midweek day. I am working with a bride at the moment who had almost £2,000 knocked off her quote by changing her Saturday, August wedding to a Wednesday.
6. Most wedding photographers now offer a fourhour package for brides on a budget. To make the most of the time you have with them. Organize reception details such as cake cutting, (I have even had a bride who has asked if we can stage a ‘first dance’) This way they don’t have to waste time on hanging around throughout the meal. They can spend more time doing what they do best!
2. If you want to enjoy a meal with your guests but simply cannot afford a three course wedding breakfast. Talk to your venue, most are happy to accommodate, look around for the alternatives. Hog Roasts, Indian banquets and even BBQ’s are becoming ever popular. They cost half the price of sit down meal, because the venue does not have to cover overheads for waiting staff.
7. There are so many licensed venues around the UK, from football stadiums to windmills. Search for a venue you both love, where you can hold both the ceremony and reception. Not only will you save in venue fees, but also with the cost of transporting your guests between two venues.
3. Many couples are shunning the traditional DJ, and opting for a ipod play list. Check with your venue, if this is something they can accommodate. I am working with a couple who are not having a disco, because the flow of their day revolves around ‘family’ and sharing a banquet together. For them the ipod option is perfect. 4. Make your own favors! Lollipops, old-fashioned sweets, or jellybeans wrapped in bright tissue paper with a small tag on. Cost almost nothing to make but look beautiful, its small things like this that adds a personal touch to weddings. 5. Look at flowers that are locally sourced. They will be much cheaper than exotic flowers, that need importing. Remember another important thing to check with your florist. What flowers are in season around the time of your wedding? Again this will dramatically decease your bill.
8. If you have found the perfect wedding cake but it is out of your budget. You can always order a smaller version. Buy a cheaper white iced cake, that can cut in the kitchen and then be served to your guests. You can buy wedding cakes from most supermarkets. 9. If you want flowers at the reception but can’t afford them, then try to use large bowls filled with water with a few floating heads. They look just as glamorous and cost only a fraction of the price. 10. If your venue doesn’t charge corkage or is very low, compare buying in the wine for your toasts and drinks. You can save a huge chunk of money by checking this out. Most supermarkets have offers on bottles of wine. Even check out local wine merchants you will find that some will sell to the public. • Written by: Laura Elizabeth Green Photography by: Melissa Ann Bagley

Andrew and Ebony
Plynlimon Cottage, Australia
Photography by Marzena Wasilewska Written by Rhee Bevere
She – lover of obscure films, of dreams, exquisite fabrics and hand detailing. He – romantic, passionate, positive, funny, detailed in his design. And when they met through friends, both were surprised to have so much in common. Together – two highly creative people in love with the past. When Andrew proposed during a cold night in Paris, Ebony felt, “that with him by my side, I could do anything.” Together, they brainstormed, created, found, handstitched or built their antique dream wedding. Beginning with the beautiful Plynlimon Cottage, a Victorian built in 1860 at the base of the Blue Mountains in Kurrajong, Australia, one by one elements fell into shape. We really wanted everything to be magical, imaginative and vintage in style,” explains Ebony. “To be old fashioned. To have history and meaning. I am a designer and Andrew is a painter and decorator. We focused on detail and quality. What we couldn’t afford or find we made ourselves.” Usually creating one-of-a-kind heirloom pieces for her clients, Ebony focused her textile expertise on herself. “As a textile artist,” she explains, “creating the perfect couture accessories for my wedding was incredibly important to me. I wanted to create magical, meaningful works of art.” First was her veil. “I transformed a
plain 1920’s juliet cap into the glamorous traditional flapper veil of my dreams. I hand-appliqued French lace all over the front of the cap and added three roses either side. The lace, roses and entire outer edge of the veil were hand-beaded with tiny costume pearls and Swarovski crystals.” Ebony needed a couture touch to go with her amazing hand beaded, body hugging Mr. K period gown, as did Andrew for his vintage top hat and tails. Flowers were next, creating fabric flowers for almost all the floral design. Andrew’s boutonniere was a traditional tussie mussie, with a single ivory satin rose and crystal center. Her bouquet was an Art Deco cascade of handmade satin roses – with something a little unexpected. “In amongst the handmade satin roses I placed embroidered portraits of my parents, Andrews parents and my grandparents. We wanted to honor the special people in our lives and so I created Embroidered Memories Keepsakes. Victorian-era inspired portraits surrounded by intricate collages of fabric and lace. The portraits in my bouquet were later displayed.” As lovers of the past, both Ebony and Andrew wanted to celebrate how important their parents were to them. Ebony created traditional brooches and cuffs, each featuring a nostalgic image that celebrated their love for their parents. “We wanted to thank them for their support. Andrew’s mother cried when I gave her the brooch.” Andrew, being a decorator and painter, also created special accessories for the wedding, including a beautiful wooden moon bench for their tea party reception. But the goodies and the cake for the reception were all in the hands of the ladies. Jam sponges and chocolate slice, sugar almonds nestling amongst handmade chocolates in apothecary jars, and three cake stands full of cupcakes, moon, star and heart cookies dusted in edible glitter…everything made by Ebony, her mother and her aunts. The three-tiered wedding cake
and even the Art Deco cake topper were also Ebony’s creation. Perhaps creating all of these wonderful touches for most brides would be a daunting task, but it’s one on which Ebony thrives. In fact, she’ll be launching her own website soon of her heirloom style accessories and couture vintage art to help those looking for those special pieces that bring a sense of uniqueness to any occasion. “Having created the wedding of my dreams,” she explains, “I am eager to help others realize their unique vision. I recently completed an amazing set of hair flowers covered entirely in Swarovski crystal for a bride. It took two weeks to complete. She looked gorgeous!” “I created heirlooms for my wedding. And now, I wish to create them for others. Everything is so massed produced today, so generic. I’m trying to fight that.”

The paper couturiÈre
The date has been set and the venue booked. Now it’s time to choose the invitations. It may seem like a simple task. What could more simple than choosing paper and ink colors? And as you walk into the first of many invitation stores, you are thrilled and excited. You start flipping through the first book, and then the second, and the third. You begin to realize that nothing seems just right and you wonder if there is the perfect invitation for your wedding hidden somewhere in pile of books set in front of you. That thrilled and excited feeling starts to dwindle to frustration and disappointment. Brides-to-be, there is hope for those who want an invitation that goes beyond the standard, the typical, let’s just say it, the boring. IZZY has found Autumn Du Pre and her company The Paper Couturière. Autumn’s earliest memories, “I always had scissors, crayons, paper, and glue; and I was a ridiculously happy kid when I had them”. Her love for art, a love shared by most children; developed into a passion for texture, color, design and paper. Over the years, working days in a maximum security men’s prison, she spent countless hours designing and creating invitations. After hearing the hundreds of accolades from her mother and grandmother, insisting
that her talents were worth sharing with others, she quit her job and Paper Couturière was born. Located in Melbourne, Australia, The Paper Couturière offers their customer’s custom designed invitations. Autumn prides herself on designing invitations that have personality, character, and on invitations that are unique and “certainly not boring”. She individually handcrafts each invitation combining different textures, and rarely, if ever, coming up with a digital design. Her philosophy on using digital design – “Yes, designing in Illustrator or other design programs is an art form, no doubt, but I believe a beautiful invitation is created with far more than just a computer. It’s using your hands and getting them dirty (literally)…it’s coming away with ink stains and paper cuts and adhesive all over your clothes. It’s all of those things that make my invitations different”. Thanks to today’s technology, Autumn is able to accept requests from around the world. “At last count, I had requests from 39 countries, on all continents except Antarctica…and as soon as the internet service is available there, I’ll conquer that market too!” If you are unable to meet with Autumn directly in the land down under, brides
can successfully navigate custom design work from abroad. “In these instances I have to really rely on the bride, that she is going to read my emails and carefully answer each question that I ask, in as much detail as possible. This only serves to ensure that I get as accurate a “visual” as possible of what she wants. I always make myself 110% available to those brides that are long distances away. There is no such thing as too many emails or phone calls”. The cost for such amazing talent translated into a one of kind invitation that your guests will admire? For an average size wedding (100-300 guests), Autumn recommends setting aside $1000.00 - $1600.00 in your budget. The more extravagant and detailed the invitation the higher the price. From initial consultation to delivery, expect your invitation to be at your doorstep within 4-7 weeks. Visit The Paper Couturière at http://www.thepapercouturiere.com/ and fall in love with Autumn Du Pre’s talent as we here at IZZY have. • Written by: Malisha Maupin

Not that long ago, it was my turn to say, “I do.” Quite frankly, it was the most overwhelming time in my life - but not by what you’d think! I wasn’t overwhelmed by finding the time to visits sites and interview planners, no not that. It was all those little touches I knew I needed to make this wedding all about Paul and I. Just how do I make our wedding something that was a reflection of us rather than what everyone expected us to do? I was a lucky one. I had an ingenious fiancé with a degree in theater, I owned my own business and set my own hours - and I had a wedding planner. But what about other brides out there, ones with full time jobs or finals coming up or the state boards to pass? Is there enough time to really pull together ideas and make them come to life? I turned to some of my past brides, favorite wedding planners and event designers to tap into their experience. Don’t jump right in just yet! Yes, it’s very tempting to just start visiting venues and tasting cake. But the better prepared you are, the easier it will be. I’m not talking just about making a budget and picking a guest list, oh no! Take a little time to sit down and really think about what would make your day yours. Jean Marks, of Jean Marks Weddings, thinks this is the key to finding your design. “I advise the couple to think about any special hobbies, travel locations, family traditions, or just elements of play that are unique to the two of them, and then brainstorm with me or good friends about how to incorporate those special elements into the wedding day, via decor, activities, menu choices, types of music, ceremony content, etc.” Think back over your entire relationship. Write down special memories, travels, what you love to do together. Where was your first date, or where did you meet? Marissa & Brandon met playing bocce ball, so they decided to incorporate that as a fun game for themselves and guests during the cocktail hour.
how to plan a wedding that is truly your own photography & text by: Rhee bevere

Maybe he decided to take you hiking early in your dating history and now you both go as often as you can. Perhaps you’re both crazy about the Minnesota Vikings or the Nashville Predators. Or you have a standing date for sushi every two weeks. Write all of it down and keep it handy. For my own wedding, we were brainstorming ideas for escort cards. I didn’t want just the same old white cards lined up on a table. What could I do that would tie in somehow with the history of Paul and I? And I got the idea fast – ring pops! The night Paul proposed, the ring was still not ready. But it was our last night in Las Vegas and he really wanted to propose at the top of the mini-Eiffel Tower at midnight while the fountains at the Bellagio were at the height of their finale. So he proposed with a grape Ring Pop. Guess what became our escort card holders? Attached to each Ring Pop were three little cards, one with the name of our guest, one with the table they were seated at, and one explaining why the heck there was a ring pop on their cards. They were a huge hit. Go and be inspired! By devoting a few hours each week for the first month to do nothing but be inspired, you’ll have the background to know what you want, what you don’t want, and where you might be able to find it. Set aside an hour every other day to do nothing but roam on websites and blogs, the newsstand, or rip out colors and items that inspire you from design magazines. Blogs and websites are a treasure of help. Seek out photographers, floral designers and lighting designers sites, since often you’ll find a huge gallery of images to inspire you. Or
blogs for brides, such as Style Unveiled or the Flirty Bride. Rock n Roll Bride, Style Me Pretty, Offbeat Bride and more. Even movies can be a great source of inspiration. Natasha Lisitsa, owner and principal designer for Waterlily Pond Floral and Event Design Studio, says, “Movie producers and designers put so much work researching it for us, why not use it? So many other movies with great sets and costumes help me to get inspired - Frida Kahlo, Marie Antoinette, Monsoon Wedding, Mad Men on HBO just to name a few.” Wedding designer and planner Nicole Lisanne of Nicole Lisanne Weddings & Events By Design, finds inspiration all around her. “I carry my camera with me and take quick snaps of things that inspire me.” San Francisco based wedding designer Duncan Reyes prefers the “build the idea” method. “I find one item I like, and from that one item, I build the color, design and style around it which would complement it best. I also like to visit major department stores and see their latest tabletop designs as well as their furniture collection. From these too, I gather ideas on floral and art integration and lighting design. Then it all comes together!” For my bride Marissa, her inspiration came from Esty, the handmade crafter website. Marissa is a little crafty herself, folding each and every single one of the 1001 cranes significant in a Japanese wedding. She also loved the idea of pinwheels instead of flowers for the centerpieces, designing each one from different yet related patterns, then putting four in a tall glass vase filled with a different candy for each table. Our table centerpiece had Lemon Heads. Yum.

Know your strengths and acknowledge weaknesses. Maybe you’re super creative but you know there’s just not enough time in the day to get your vision going. Or, you’d rather just hand all your notes and thoughts over to someone more creative than you. Consider hiring a designer or planner. Great planners know when to take your idea and run with it within the confines of the budget that you both create. Great planners call on their support system to help find just the right shade of blue or the answer to an unusual request. Great planners also save money because they have such a great support system of vendors, too. Lucky us, many of those great planners are fantastic at design, too! Marissa and Brandon wanted nothing to do with a cake. They thought it would be tons more fun (and much more like them!) to have an ice cream truck roll on up to the front doors of the Nestldown barn and play that timeless ice cream truck music. And that’s exactly what they did! Marissa’s wedding planner Jean Marks of Jean Marks Weddings knew who to turn to – Aunt LaLi’s Treats from Santa Cruz, CA. And there was the happy couple, with Marissa all decked out in a handmade apron over her Melissa Sweet gown, handing out ice cream bars of all kinds. Then they shared a treat together instead of cutting a cake. Their guests loved the idea! Share with your guests what the all the connections mean. The very best way to bring everything together is to make sure your guests understand what is significant, and why. You could put it into your program, or have it announced in some way, or even share it yourselves as you greet guests. For Marissa & Brandon, honoring the memory of her mother was imperative. She wanted all the guests to understand exactly why each attendant was laying a single lily on the empty chair next to her father. And why butterflies were going to be released. So she asked her aunts to read about why the butterflies were being released – that they represented the spirit of her mother being with her that day. She and Brandon recessed back down the aisle, her carrying both her own bouquet and the handful of lilies from her mothers’ chair. As they reached the end of the aisle, they turned back around while her three aunts read what they had prepared. And then, each guest released a single butterfly. I even started to cry myself when one of those butterflies landed on the lilies. It was as if her mom was there. •

CALLIGRAPHY BY JENNIFER
Some of you may be asking what is calligraphy? The dictionary states it is “handwriting or penmanship”, or simply “beautiful writing”. The word calligraphy is usually defined by its two Greek roots: kalli meaning beautiful and graphia referring to writing. Jennifer Gillespie gave us some great suggestions that get straight to the point in helping you decide if calligraphy is a good fit for your wedding day.
A: Costs start at $1.25 and range up to $3.00 and beyond for envelope addressing. My services extend to menu design and so much more! These costs vary depending on different factors. Q: What has been your most unusual request?
Q: What are the different uses of calligraphy as related to a wedding?
A: Oh, my gosh! I had a guy who had me hand-letter his daughter’s name in calligraphy. He then used it to have her name tattooed on his back!
A: Calligraphy can be used as a monogram on a dance floor, seating charts, signs for food, and even guest names. The possibilities are endless in creativity!
Q: Is there anything that you would like to tell brides about yourself?
Q: What advice would you give a bride looking to find a calligrapher? A: I strongly recommend interviewing a calligrapher. Review their past work and see what fits your wedding budget. Book your calligrapher several months in advance! Q: Why would you say your services are unique and current with today’s changing trends?
WRITTEN BY: LISA MARIE SKILES
Q: What is the cost for your services?
A: I love what I do and enjoy making people happy, which is so rewarding! I have the best job in the world! Thank you so much Jennifer for sharing your great tips and suggestions with IZZY. Brides if you would like to contact Jennifer you can reach her at www.calligraphybyjennifer.net . From private islands in Fiji to chic hotels in Cabo, here’s a look at some of the most romance-inducing luxury resorts on earth Written by: Stacy small What do Fiji, Bali, Mexico and St. Barts have in common apart from being a beautiful destination? Each is home to some of the most romantic luxury hotels & resorts we’ve uncovered in our worldwide travels! For the ultimate in luxury, romance, privacy and pampering, Laucala Island, Fiji is choice number one. A total of 25 villas, each hidden from the next, offers up the perfect hideaway for honeymooners seeking serious R&R in a setting that blends peacefulness with playfulness (think outdoor baths, huge wooden circular tubs, brightly colored rugs, handcrafted wood furnishings from Thailand, Fiji, Bali and beyond, as well as iPod docks, satellite TVs, fully-stocked bars & outdoor pools with separate living/dining space). Honeymooners need never leave their villa if they desire.; the 350-person staff is at your beck and call to deliver breakfast, lunch and dinner. Though, it’s highly recommended to check out the Beach Bar, Seagrass Asian restaurant, The Plantation House, not to mention the incredible spa (all have ocean views). And what’s more romantic than horseback riding on a private beach? Did we mention you can also get married here? There’s a wedding chapel on site and all paperwork/ceremonies can be completed within four days. It’s the perfect spot for a total destination wedding takeover, or a honeymoon a deux.
Romantic Getaways
Another favorite property that oozes romance is Las Ventanas, in Los Cabos, Mexico. The chic setting (think lots of white against a backdrop of sparkling blue) coupled with stylishly designed, oceanview suites and an uber-friendly staff anxious to please and the recipe for romance is delivered without a glitch. There’s even a “Romance Director” on site
96
who can pre-arrange special activities, private beachfront dinners, or even entire weddings. Bali is another beautiful destination where romance is in the air, at modern beach resorts like Amankila to the more traditionally designed, Ubud-based hotels like Amandari. A perfect honeymoon might combine stays at the two Aman properties, both totally different yet equally special in their own right. While at Amankila, wake up to views of the stunningly blue Indian Ocean and enjoy a private beach club with boating and other watersports at your disposal. In contrast, Amandari in the heart of Ubud offers an authentic taste of traditional Balinese village life in a charming setting that’s lush, green and within close proximity to temples, amazing hikes, local shops and restaurants. The female general managers of both properties go out of their way to ensure honeymooners receive extraspecial treatment, and in these two unique settings, it’s not difficult to keep the romance alive. Last but not least, the Caribbean’s most romantic resort is Le Toiny in St. Barts. The property features just 15 private oceanview suites, each decked out with private pools, gorgeous furnishings, stunning views and access to the best restaurant on island (it’s here at the hotel). This is the kind of place you choose when peace and quiet top the list of priorities, as do top notch service, incredible cuisine, and proximity to the rest of a beautiful, beach-filled island. •
For more information on booking honeymoons or weddings at any of the above resorts, contact Elite Travel International at 310 979 9036 or via email stacy@ elitetraveilnternational.com. All clients of Elite Travel International receive the best possible rates as well as many exclusive VIP perks and value added amenities at each of these properties.
