CENTURY-OLD SWISS FARM GETS AN EXCITING NEW MAKEOVER Amongst the concrete lie patches of greenery, with the buildings surrounding a paved courtyard containing gravel, grass and aesthetic sloping pathways.
STOCKHOLM CITY LIBRARY TO BE RESTORED BY CARUSO ST JOHN The British architects, Caruso St John, have won a competition to restore and expand upon one of the most significant 20th-century buildings in Sweden: the Stockholm City Library. Work is set to begin in 2017 and should be completed by 2019. A previous scheme was abandoned due to funding issues and protests from heritage groups. However, Caruso St John’s design is a restoration project as opposed to a completely new extension. In order to meet the more contemporary requirements of the library, the studio plans to work on and reorganise the internal spaces of the building. Stockholm City Library was designed by Erik Gunnar Asplund and was one of the most accessible libraries in the world. It was also the first of its kind in the country, in that it offered public access to the stacks. Asplund toured America and it was this journey that inspired his vision. The main library is circular, in the middle of the building and reachable by a grand staircase. Although the building has maintained its popularity, it has struggled to keep up with increased foot traffic, along with the demands that come with the changing times. 14
A Zurich-based studio, EM2N, have converted a 150-yearold farm complex into an assortment of residential and office blocks. The plot is the 7,000 square-metre Hammer Farm estate in Cham, Switzerland. EM2N have renovated the entire site, which has been adapted and changed over the years but never completely restored at one time. In order to create additional accommodation, the architects added concrete and timber-clad blocks, extended the barns and remodeled the farmhouses.
REGENTS PARK TO BECOME THE HOME OF QATAR’S ROYAL FAMILY The royal family of Qatar has submitted plans to convert three homes in London into their very own palace. Whilst the Gulf state’s rulers already own a vast amount of property in London, the family still plans to build the UK’s very first £200 million home, in the heart of Regent’s Park. The Daily Mail has said the new palace will be a “33,000 square-foot mansion, boasting a spa, heated swimming pool, beauty salon, butler and nanny quarters, a children’s floor, game rooms, powder rooms, massage areas, two lifts and a gymnasium.” Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned bought the three homes last year for £120 million. She is one of the wives of Qatar’s former emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, and her family already owns the Shard, Harrods and the Olympic Village. It is said that the mansion will be the London home of Sheikh Hamad’s son, the current emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

HAMPSTEAD WELCOMES ITS VERY OWN TREE HOUSE The house includes four bedrooms, each with an en-suite bathroom, herringbone-patterned flooring and a private balcony sheltered by the overhanging roof.
A London-based firm, Stanton Williams Architects, has completed building a house in north London’s Fitzroy Park that gives the illusion of a treehouse. It has a timber and stone exterior with a green roof, with the entrance being reached by crossing a bridge. The threestorey Fitzroy House has open balconies facing Hampstead Heath. Stanton Williams told Dezeen magazine, “painted in dark grey, the timber brings extra texture and colour to the limestone on the exterior façade.” Stanton Williams are also responsible for projects such as the Stirling Prize-winning Sainsbury Laboratory.
ROTTERDAM UNVEILS NEW “EGG-IN-A-BOX” STUDENT PAVILION AT ERASMUS UNIVERSITY A new student centre has been unveiled at Erasmus University in Rotterdam that is unlike any other. It features a transparent exterior and a curved oak interior. Powerhouse Company collaborated with De Zwarte Hond on the project, and the Dutch studios describe the layout as an “egg-in-a-box” arrangement. The building is intended to become the new social hub of the university campus, and is located to the east of the city centre. The idea behind the project was to create a bright, welcoming and positive area for staff and students alike, which is why the building is as open as possible and more public activities can be found around the perimeter. Powerhouse Company won a competition to design the building back in 2010, saying to Dezeen magazine, “this ‘egg-in-a-box’ arrangement preserves the transparency of the exterior through its floor-to-ceiling glazing.”
... It allows the pavilion to better connect with its surroundings, as well as to encourage passersby to flow in from all elevations.

GET SMART Imagine a world where you aren’t woken up suddenly by the aggressive alarm clock next to your bed, clamouring for your attention. Imagine looking into your bathroom mirror, and not even noticing the yawning, half-asleep reflection you’re so used to seeing day after day. Yasmin Harake investigates. INSTEAD, PICTURE THIS. You wake up gradually and peacefully, when the automated lights in your bedroom slowly turn on to give you a gentle wake-up call. Forget the tired face that greets you in the bathroom mirror first thing in the morning. Instead you find yourself staring at not only your reflection, but at a live feed of information including the weather and the day’s top news. WELCOME TO THE HOUSE OF THE FUTURE. The integration of technology with small household tasks is designed to make our daily lives both more manageable and enjoyable. With machines sharing some of the responsibilities we have within the home, we’re saving ourselves time and energy that can now be spent elsewhere. However, the home automation system – or, as it’s more commonly known – the smart home isn’t intended only to brew your coffee and do your laundry. Having a smart home means living somewhere that has been designed to boost energy efficiency, enhance security measures, and even monitor the health of your family. LET’S TALK ABOUT THE KITCHEN. Once your sworn enemy, and now, your new best friend. Your fridge reminds you to buy milk when you’re running low, puts a shopping list together before ordering groceries at the tap of a finger and here’s the best part: If your shelves are starting to look a little empty and you’re stuck for meal ideas, your fridge will work out what you can make for dinner all by itself. When it comes to doing the laundry we’re all guilty of putting it off until the next day, and then the day after that. It’s not the most exciting of activities, but thanks to the innovative new technology of home appliances, that could be about to change.
24
COVER STORY WASHED OUT Don’t plan your day around your laundry, because with a smart app you can remotely monitor the status of your washing machine. It keeps you updated by showing the remaining time of your loads and will alert you when the cycle has finished. You can also download new and improved custom cycles as and when they become available, meaning your clothes are always cleaner and fresher than before.
SOMETHING’S COOKING Say goodbye to cleaning your oven and say hello to the future of self-cleaning appliances. Instead of using harsh chemicals, high heat and a lot of elbow grease, the innovative interior of the smart oven means it self-cleans in minutes.

HOT UNDER THE COLLAR Like the smart washing machine, the smart dryer has updated cycles you can download intermittently. These cycles are designed for different fabrics and provide you with various drying settings that meet the requirements of your clothes. Some smart dryers even boast a feature that automatically runs your machine when the electricity rates are at their lowest.
THE BIG FREEZE State-of-the-art technology blends effortlessly with spacious storage and sleek design to bring you the new smart fridge. Featuring a small touch-screen display, you will find yourself immersed in an array of culinary information. With the ability to compile shopping lists, anticipate upcoming expiry dates and provide you with recipe ideas, the smart fridge is designed to make your kitchen experience as accessible and enjoyable as possible.

COVER STORY ENLIGHTEN ME Smart lighting has an array of clever features – you can switch selected lights on or off from a remote location at the tap of a button. Play with colours and illuminate your room to suit your mood, or use an app to dim them without having to move from your comfortable position on the couch. Some smart lighting systems even offer a ‘holiday mode’, which automatically turns your lights on or off while you’re away – so your neighbours don’t have to!
THE WARM UP The smart thermostat enables you to manage the temperature of your home from anywhere, using your smart phone, tablet or desktop. The smart thermostat takes central heating to another level, learning from and adapting to your behaviour. Some of them even use motion sensors to detect if your home is empty, in which case it will not activate. In doing so, it limits your energy consumption and saves you money.

Smart TVs are all about enhancing your television experience, with higher resolution, brighter colours and sharper picture. HIGH FI(VE) What is a smart home without a smart hi-fi system? Synchronise multi-room speakers around your home to play the same track or stream different ones depending on your family’s preferences. The smart sound system will also welcome you home by automatically syncing with your mobile devices, meaning your favourite music will follow you around the house.

The unparalleled technology behind the Cleopatra Collection by Altruis is about to blow your mind. The collection of rings, necklaces and bracelets all boast an Altruis stone which is made from premium Zirconia Ceramics - making it the most gemologically and economically close competitor to diamond. The real secret?
