"Rosetta, Arabic Rashīd , town, northern Al-Buhayrah governorate, in the northwestern Nile River delta, Lower Egypt. It lies on the left bank of the Rosetta Branch of the Nile River, with multiple vistas, southeast of its entrance into the Mediterranean and northeast of Alexandria. Rosetta is the third most important port city in Egypt. Rosetta still maintains a coastal trading function and has rice milling and fishing industries. It has highway and rail links with Alexandria and Damanhūr." -The Editors of Encyclopædia Britannica

SURVEY
have only one privately owned health facility, specialised for children, adults have to go to rasheed for medicine and doctors.
no transportation after 10 pm, no ambulance, sick people could be problematic.
very short harvest season of dates; unreliable source of income.
residents of Burg Rashid do not wish to move to Rasheed, it was established by their ancestors, they only hoped for better facilities and services in their village.
10
Informal buildings started forming clusters on both sides of the road to Rasheed.
People wish for a corniche with a sidewalk and seating areas like the one developed in Rashid.
mini industries of reed boxes and fishing.
Yacht workshops/ shipyards/ workshops/ warehouses + under construction harbour buildings
People move between Rashid and burg rashid by an hourly train, frequent bus and minibus connections
no proper drainage/ sanitation problems
Rivalry between people from opposite river banks, people from Rashid›s side dislike how their neighbours rip off their jobs and sustenance..
The informaly scattered fish farms and to be demolished and moved to a collective farm in Kafr Al Shaikh, where people from rashid have to cross the river for.

15
During the mapping process, the focused aspect was the urban growth parallel to the waterfront, especially the newly formed urban settlement of Burg Rashid that grew outside the boundaries of Rashid. Various focal points were traced from reality to further make use of; the naturally-formed water enclosures, the connection of the Nile River and the Mediterranean Sea and the scattered plots with an abundance of palm trees, in very high densities. Rashid was found to be fairly developed and has an established infrastructure and good sanitation systems. There was a noticeable gap between socio-economic states of Rashid and Burg Rashid, Rashid was found to be superior, and that is why our interest was diverted to developing only Burg Rashid only.

THE MASTERPLAN OF BURG RASHID
I. MAIN AXIS
PRODUCED BY AN AUTODESK EDUCATIONAL PRODUCT
A WALK THROUGH NATURE
The corniche acts as the main axis. To emphasize its impotance, it has the biggest width in the whole network, which is completely composed of wooden planks.
II. EXTENSION AT NODE
The Citadel acts as a node, at which the corniche splits and exntends into two secondary branches: - One that cuts through the palm plot to connect the corniche with the main road. - The other forms a secondary corniche on the inner side of the water formations.
III. PARALLEL AXIS
The floating platfrom that connects all the fishmerne's houses runs parrallel to the main axis.
IV. CONNECTION The floating platform is connected to the main corniche at 3 points, two of which are at the Citadel and the water baths.

On the masterplan scale, the scenario starts with embracing the nature, water and greenery, experiencing walking on water, bathing in the Nile, residing among the palm trees, buying fresh fish that is alive and transported by air to the fish market before your eyes, and visiting the fishermen’s floating village. So besides offering an unparalleled recreational experience for the visitors, it also serves the locals with three main functions: Live, Work, Shop.

MASTERPLAN IN CONTEXT
The urban installation composed of four modular designs that can be replicated in plots with an abundance of dense palm plots, condensed fish farms and delicate land formations crawling into the nile. Two families of typologies are introduced, the family of morphing surfaces that fluctuate around water & only act on its borders, and the family of elevated masses that penetrate the formations of existing elements but never touch it, only to fill the negative space.

MASTERPLAN IN RELATION TO THE WATERFRONT
The urban installation of basic platforms and boxes. The boxes are the living units housed in the palm trees and the Fishermen’s houses bourne by the water of the Nile. The platforms connect between the different parts of the proposal. In addition to being a vital part of the circulation, the platforms unfold and morph to form the structure of the fish market and the bathing area. 28

HEIRARCHY OF PLATFORMS A certain heirarchy of platforms was considered to define the vitality as well as capacity of a path. The corniche being the most important element has a width of 15m, which decreases gradually until reaching a minimum width of 2m for the paths leading to the individual fishermen's unit and the palm tree houses.

The system breaks down into two families of typologies, a family of morphing surfaces and a family of elevated masses, all of which interwine with the existing urban fabric of Burg Rashid. The morphing structures are of topographical nature while the elevated masses tend to expand vertically. The wooden platforms act as joints, that bring together all parts of the masterplan thoroughly.
33
THE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM
THE TRANSPORTER: FISH ON TOUR The transport system gives the impression that all four single parts of the system are interconnected, both physically and visually. The fish is transported from several collection points embeded within the fishermen's village and on the waterfront, for fishermen who are non-residents of the fishermen's village to contribute their harvest as well, and all is transported to the recieving area infront of the market. The system rotates anti-clockwise where the bags are loaded with fish while passing through the collection points, and a crane at the recieving area in front of the market helps with the process of unloading of the fish in the water again. Thats when the selling process proceeds.

BURG RASHID HARBOUR BATHS
FLOATING BOUNDARIES The proposal deals with the naturally formed water enclosures. First, a water purification process has to be held so that the water is usable by people coming to the bathing and playground areas. Two of the water formations would be cladded while keeping their natural, organic forms. The added structure would only be attached to the water borders. Light-weight wooden platforms would replace the traced existing paths to provide circulation around the baths. The intervention acts mainly on three boarders. The main area is the bathing area, which also houses a wellness centre. The northern bath, would be partially shaded by the elevated platform structure, forming a stepped lounging area and diving boards as well as a vantage point offering views of Burg Rashid and the open green fields as well as Rashid in the distance. The southern lake, embraces a children's playground connected with shallow waters, which also has an urban washing basin facilitated for dish-washing and upgraded with selfcleaning water, with the help of aquatic plants. The playground offers children water installtons as well as climbing rods. The last part is an urban trampoline that overlook the open waters and open fields of Burg Rashid.

LIVE FISH MARKET
INSIDE THE FISH TANK The proposal provides a fish market oriented on a water formation that acts as a receiving area for the daily harvest of the fishermen, transported directly from the collection units embeded within their houses, by a cable system that connects all the fishermen settlements and the market. The market is formed of wooden, stepped platforms traced from the the water, that are used for seating of the visitors. The market underneath houses the selling booths, with several entrances that connect the market with the water so it would facilitate the transportation process of the fish from the water to their outlet. The market has three main zones, a restaurant serving local cuisine, located directly on the water for the visitors to have a meal with a view, the fish outlet selling live fish from the recieving pond and a storage area for manufactured and preserved fish.

PALM TREE HOUSES
THE WOVEN PALMS
The proposal deals directly with the dense nature of the palm plots. These lands were found to be of a sole purpose; planting dates, which would be harvested on the course of only 10 days annually. Other than that, the land itself was of no use for the locals, they cannot build on it, or cut off the palm trees or cultivate it because of the shaded nature of the land beneath the palms. The palm trees were used as the main structural elements to house the ecolodges, such that in the middle of each unit, there is a palm tree clutching the ecolodge. The units are elevated from the ground and interconnected with a series of platforms that have different hierarchies. Beneath each unit, there is a private platform whihc has the ladder used to access the unit itself. The ladder leads to a trap door that opens in the middle of the unit. All units are connected with two ring roads of different heights. Beneath the whole structure, the land is used as botanical gardens for shaded plants.

FISHERMEN FLOATING VILLAGE
RESURRECTING THE IMMERSED CITY
PRODUCED BY AN AUTODESK EDUCATIONAL PRODUCT
The proposal provides the fisherman with a floating community, which would expand vertically due to the unforeseen rise in the sea level. The primitive wooden structure is located on water, creating a parallel scape between the riverbanks of Burg Rashid and Kafr el Sheikh. The organizational pattern is traced from the existing fish farms. The individual units are connected with floating platforms. Some units are residential while others are used primarily as a gathering space while others contain the fishing equipment. Also at each cluster there is a collection unit where the fishermen deposit their daily harvest to be transported to the fish market by the cable system. There are two fish collection stations accessible to the public, one on the waterfront near the baths and the other in the middel of the water and in accessible via a floating platform connected to the citadell. This gives the opportunity for wandering fishermen/ tourists to take part in the transport network.
