Module Brief Title: Product, Range & Distribution
STUDIO BRIEF 1: Project Proposal Project Rationale Project Rationale. (what do you intend to do and why?)
I am intending on making an illustrated guide to Hong Kong but adding a personal touch to it by including small comic segments about my experience in Hong Kong. There would be a small mascot which accompanies the guide which the user could bring around with the guide and photograph it at the locations mentioned in the guide. Most travel guides aren’t really engaging and are very commercial. I intend on making a publication which opposes the traditional guidebook; encouraging people to experience the city itself instead of focusing on the superficial side of travelling (shopping, going to tourist hotspots which are claimed to be local but aren’t.)
THEMES / SUBJECTS What Themes/Subjects will form the content of your work for this module? This should include Theoretical and non- creative based content and concerns. This section should identify your consideration of the social, cultural, ethical and creative concerns of contemporary practice GENERAL THEMES:
• • •
Tourism Product & Packaging Publishing & Book Design
SPECIFIC SUBJECTS:
• • •
Mascots, designer and collectible toys Commercial design (advertising and packaging) Artistic identity (what impact my work has on the audience/how I could influence audience with my work?)
PRACTICAL & CONCEPTUAL APPLICATION What areas of Illustration do you intend to investigate in relation to the practical and conceptual, production / distribution of work in response to selected briefs. SPECIFIC DISCIPLINARY AREA: I chose product and packaging as my specific disciplinary area as I think most guidebooks are seen as more of a product than a publication, they’re almost like instruction manuals. Guidebooks are technically ‘selling’ a location to someone, so it fits more in the product area rather than publishing and book design. I’m also taking illustrations on Japanese packaging as inspiration for my style, so I think this category would be the most appropriate to focus on. AUDIENCE/CONTEXTS: • •
Tourists Mainly teenagers and adults ranging from 20-30 years old, and are interested in contemporary illustration(?)
PRODUCTION / DISTRIBUTION METHODS: • The packaging of the guidebook would be part of the guidebook itself, which is a sustainable way to utilize resources. • The guidebook itself would be digitally printed, and would consist of both digital and hand drawn images, and possibly photographs • I would be screen printing the image on the packaging instead of digitally printing it to add a little personal touch to it • Possible distributors: Colours may vary, Fred Aldous, and definitely indie bookshops in Hong Kong.
CONTEXTUAL REFERENCES Identify areas of professional/creative practices that will inform the contextualization of the work that you produce. This should include specific illustrators, studios, practitioner’s and products as well as broader creative disciplines and methods of Production / Distribution. ILLUSTRATORS / DESIGNERS / STUDIOS: • • • • • •
Kimiaki Yaegashi Gary Taxali Yoskay Yamamoto Takagi Naoko Asian trend magazines: Lots of Asian magazines includes a small gift. The packaging is usually well designed to utilize space, fitting the merchandise and magazine in one box strategically Guidebooks: a lot of newer guidebooks have very well designed covers and book jackets which could be a good source of inspiration
CREATIVE SKILLS What practical skills do you intend to further develop and apply during your project. What do you intend to use the skills for. Consider extending the use of skills that you already have in order to deliver work of a higher standard as well as identifying new skills that you will need to develop.
• •
Screen printing on packaging material: I intend on further developing my screen printing skills I acquired from the previous module Illustrator: a lot of illustrations on packaging are vectors and have a very clean style, I want to attempt to create images with that sort of style (if this fails I could always resort to photoshop)
•
•
InDesign/Digital print: since I’m going to be digitally printing my guidebook I’m going to have to use InDesign to format the publication. I have previous knowledge about InDesign so I’m fairly confident about it. Bookbinding: I’ve made zines and hand bound books previously but I want to experiment more with different binding methods and find the most suitable one for my guidebook
KEY TEXTS. List a selected number of books, articles and texts that are central to your proposed area of practice. These should include a combination of design and non-practice based books, theoretical texts as well as visual publications. You should include a list of relevant websites

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION After reflecting on the feedback I received regarding my work produced for last module, I need to remember to focus more on the research stage as I was lacking a lot of experimentation and research. I also need to remember to leave sufficient time to print my book as I’ve heard that a lot could go wrong in the print lab.
