Module Brief Title: Product, Range & Distribution

STUDIO BRIEF 1: Project Proposal Project Rationale Project Rationale. (what do you intend to do and why?)

I am intending to create a food orientated guidebook to Hong Kong’s restaurants, from local to other Asian cuisines, the guidebook will introduce readers to Hong Kong’s world of food. Most travel guides aren’t really engaging and are very commercial. I intend on making a publication which opposes the traditional guidebook by including smaller, more local restaurants that aren’t usually mentioned in guidebooks. There would also be small characters included in the images to create a whimsical atmosphere within the book, giving it a more ‘personal’ feel to it. There would be two figurines that come with the guidebook for readers to bring along as they’re exploring to photograph with the food and throughout the city.

THEMES / SUBJECTS What Themes/Subjects will form the content of your work for this module? This should include Theoretical and non- creative based content and concerns. This section should identify your consideration of the social, cultural, ethical and creative concerns of contemporary practice GENERAL THEMES:

• • •

Tourism Product & Packaging Publishing & Book Design

SPECIFIC SUBJECTS:

• • •

Mascots, designer and collectible toys Commercial design (advertising and packaging) Artistic identity (what impact my work has on the audience/how I could influence audience with my work?)

PRACTICAL & CONCEPTUAL APPLICATION What areas of Illustration do you intend to investigate in relation to the practical and conceptual, production / distribution of work in response to selected briefs. SPECIFIC DISCIPLINARY AREA: I chose product and packaging as my specific disciplinary area as I think most guidebooks are seen as more of a product than a publication, they’re almost like instruction manuals. Guidebooks are technically ‘selling’ a location to someone, so it fits more in the product area rather than publishing and book design. Since the ideal finished product would be a set of figurines and the book, I’d also have to look at how I could design packaging that could fit both products and present them appropriately if they were distributed to shops. AUDIENCE/CONTEXTS: • • •

Tourists, specifically western tourists as this book will be written in English. (late teens, adults ranging from the age 20-30?) Possibly audience in Hong Kong who would buy this for fun Ideally this product would be sold at bookshops, small art stores, and possibly comic conventions though the latter might not be as appropriate since it’s more of a commercial product and the audience at conventions are usually people who don’t travel out of the country for anything else but conventions

PRODUCTION / DISTRIBUTION METHODS: • The guidebook itself would be digitally printed, and would consist of both digital and hand drawn images • Possible distributors: art/lifestyle shops, book conventions, bookshops (e.g. Waterstones, Barnes and Noble, PageOne) in the UK, US, and Hong Kong CONTEXTUAL REFERENCES Identify areas of professional/creative practices that will inform the contextualization of the work that you produce. This should include specific illustrators, studios, practitioner’s and products as well as broader creative disciplines and methods of Production / Distribution. ILLUSTRATORS / DESIGNERS / STUDIOS: • • • • • • •

Kimiaki Yaegashi Gary Taxali Yoskay Yamamoto Takagi Naoko Asian trend magazines: Lots of Asian magazines includes a small gift. The packaging is usually well designed to utilize space, fitting the merchandise and magazine in one box strategically Chronicle books: an independent publishing company and distributor of a range of illustrated stationery and books based in the states Joint Publishing (H.K.): Publishing company based in Hong Kong and is known to publish a very wide range of different books from autobiographies to comic books

CREATIVE SKILLS What practical skills do you intend to further develop and apply during your project. What do you intend to use the skills for. Consider extending the use of skills that you already have in order to deliver work of a higher standard as well as identifying new skills that you will need to develop.

Water colour: this is a medium I’ve never really worked with and am keen on trying out; water colour is a lot more free flowing and harder to control than digital painting but I think it’d be a good skill to acquire and will look good when illustrating food

• •

Adobe Illustrator: Another thing I’m unfamiliar with but I think it’d be extremely useful to learn how to use this program to create packaging nets and possibly creating images on illustrator InDesign/Digital print: since I’m going to be digitally printing my guidebook I’m going to have to use InDesign to format the publication. I have previous knowledge about InDesign so I’m fairly confident about it. Bookbinding: I’ve made zines and hand bound books previously but I want to experiment more with different binding methods and find the most suitable one for my guidebook

KEY TEXTS. List a selected number of books, articles and texts that are central to your proposed area of practice. These should include a combination of design and non-practice based books, theoretical texts as well as visual publications. You should include a list of relevant websites

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION After reflecting on the feedback I received regarding my work produced for last module, I need to remember to focus more on the research stage as I was lacking a lot of experimentation and research. I also need to remember to leave sufficient time to print my book as I’ve heard that a lot could go wrong in the print lab.
