Autobiography My name is Delzin Choksey and I was born and raised in a humble home in Mumbai, India. I grew up in a bustling city within a diverse and culture rich environment. From an early age my parents urged my brother and me to explore our hobbies and look to transforming them into our careers. The exposure in a city like Mumbai added to my life a sense of acceptance and developed in me a longing to excel. My interest in art dates back to my school days and I would spend hours drawing and sketching. When I eventually took up Applied Art in my under graduate career, I enjoyed every bit of it and realized that visual communication through any media illustration, photography or graphic design was powerful, challenging and exciting. At sixteen, both human behavior and art intrigued me. Over the next five years, I simultaneously pursued and received degrees in both Psychology and Applied Art. My interest in motion graphics heightened and I chose to turn my print assignments into animations wherever possible. I worked with social causes as well as fun self-exploring campaigns. During this time, I learned that an understanding of human behavior was intertwined with the art of visual communication. My childhood has significantly influenced the way I think today. In school as well as in college, I was exposed to good teachers and admirable mentors who always encouraged my all round development and academic excellence. As part of my Applied Art degree I interned with a national music channel, B4U. I worked in the pre-production department as an illustrator, a story board artist and a script writer. After completing my degree, I joined On-Lyne Computer Systems as a web designer and graphic designer and honed my skills in interactive media. Here, I developed interactive websites and created animations for clients worldwide but I missed animation. When I moved to the US, I worked for various NGO’s and did freelance design work. Although I enjoyed it, I truly yearned for an education in animation that would help me polish my expertise in a formal academic setting, helping me develop the professional skills I needed to excel in the industry.

Abstract

Carried Away is a short about Feather- a little porcupine, who falls in love with the one thing he just can’t have –balloons! This story is a humorous attempt at outlining a theme we can easily identify with. Sometimes in life our goal is the only thing we see. We forget that it’s about the journey not the destination and even after we reach the destination, the adventure has only just begun! After a fun-filled day at the carnival, Feather merrily walks back home with a colorful pinwheel and some cotton candy. As he trots along the deserted path he encounters a shadow on the ground. He looks up curiously and is amazed by what he sees – a bunch of bright-colored-floating-balloons, tied to a cart and bouncing in the wind! Now, any kind of excitement makes Feathers quills pop right out and he drops everything and stares longingly at the balloons. Snapping out of out of his amazement, he runs to the cart, scrambles up and pulls down a balloon. As soon as it gets close to him it bursts making a loud “POP” sound as it comes in contact with his quills. Undaunted, he pulls another one down and ‘POP’ it bursts again. Although confused, he persists in his quest. He pulls down another balloon, slowly this time but yet again, it goes ‘POP’. He scans the vicinity, looking questioningly to see if there’s anyone around—he can’t seem to figure out who’s bursting his balloons! Then, as he attempts to pull another balloon down, he sees his sharp quill pointing directly at it, almost ready to burst it again! He is disappointed and his sadness causes all his quills to droop down. But his eyes light up as he realizes he knows how to tame his quills! He shuts his eyes and with all his might he works hard to keep them from spiking again but as soon as he looks up at the balloons and gets excited his quills bounce back sharp. Dejected by his thwarted attempts, Feather jumps off the cart looking up at the balloons with a troubled frown. His quills are always in the way! He stands pouting until a tiny butterfly named Wings flutters by him, making him laugh. As he giggles, his quills shoot out – in one quick move they skewer Wings and Feather who is shocked, begins to bawl. Nothing is going his way! As he cries, his eyes catch the balloons up high, they beckon him and that strengthens his resolve to get them. Feather backs up and runs towards the cart at full-speed, the wind pushing his quills back. He then makes a leap for the balloons. As he is up in the air moving towards the beautiful brightly colored and oh so light and pretty balloons, his eyes light up and nothing else matters. Unfortunately, he flies right past the balloons and lands on the cart setting the cart in motion. He squeals as he rides the runaway cart, speeding downhill, headed to crash into a stall. Suddenly a rock breaks the cart’s run, catapulting Feather into the neatly-arranged cotton candy stall. A loud crash ensues as a pair of eyes come up amidst all the cotton candy. Feather’s quills are covered in a sugary pink cloud. He realizes his problem is solved, his balloons are safe from his sharp quills. He grabs all the balloons, holding them as close as he can. He giggles and laughs, overjoyed to have got what he wanted. But the balloons lift him into the sky and his smile suddenly changes into a nervous grin as he realizes something is wrong. Feather looks down at the ground far below with a troubled smile as the balloons carry him into the clouds.

Project Proposal With ‘Carried Away’ I intend to successfully create a professional quality 3D animated short. My aim is to use this short as a platform to showcase my animation skills. My goal is to bring the character to life where he is made believable to the people who watch the film. I would like Feather to not only be a character the audience empathizes with but also be someone the audience identifies with. Feather – Feather the porcupine is a challenging character. His quills make him understandably daunting to model and rig as well as animate. My plan is to use polygons for his quills and keep the rig simple. The entire body of quills will be influenced by only a couple of controllers. One quill on his forehead will be rigged separately to allow me to move it specifically to burst the balloons. Apart from that his basic anatomy will be bi-pedal. He will wear shoes throughout the film. Feather is extremely expressive, his face, body and quills will reflect his emotions. The Environment - The carnival and the sky as well as the background will be a matte painting. The hill that feather stands on throughout the film, will be a simple polygonal model. I will model some rocks on the hill and the rock at the bottom of the hill that halts the run-away cart. I will have multiple backgrounds matte painted for the various camera angles. In the short the carnival is only viewed at one angle throughout the film. I will have everything in the environment look soft with rounded edges to contrast Feather’s sharp quills. The Cart and the Balloons – The balloons play an important part in the film. They will be modeled, rigged and textured. The physics of the strings and balloons will be handled manually . I will be using a connection editor on the wheels of the cart. Additional props – My additional props include the cotton candy and pinwheel that he holds and the beanie that he wears. They will be simple models textured and the pinwheel will also have a connection editor. Apart from that, the cotton candy stall will be modeled and textured. Effects – I have effects such as the balloons popping and the crash at the end. I also have the cotton candy surrounding Feather at the end . Animation is my forte and all the animation in the film will be done by me. I also enjoy lighting and am excited to try various effects and techniques to work the balloons. I will have help on the modeling and rigging of the characters and props from artists who now work in the industry. I also have a sound artist helping me with the effects and sound of the film. I plan to submit my finished short to film festivals and competitions and I plan on starting a blog to record the progress of my thesis.
