Welcome to the 9th issue of SynergyZ! It is hard to believe that one year has already passed since the last issue. Time truly does fly – and not just during annual leave or weekends. For this issue we stepped back and have taken stock of what happened in the last 12 months. We all know, December 2009 was a memorable month World Zoroastrian Congress turned 50 WZCC turned 10 and SynergyZ turned 5 So we bring in this issue vivid stories on all three occassions. Undoubtedly the contributions of 750 Delegates made the Congress a memorable event. The four days journey of the Congress was exhilarating. For Dubai, the 9th World Zoroastrian Congress was perhaps the biggest gathering of world leading industrialists, businessmen, thought provoking leaders and professionals from a single community ever held in this city. Interfaith was at its best as leading businessmen from the UAE, Ambassadors and Consul Generals from the Diplomatic enclave, high ranking officials from the Dubai Chamber of Commerce, Jebel Ali Free Zone, Government of the UAE met with the delegates and networked with them and opened channels of communication. The Congress was also endorsed strongly by the Members of the Ruling Family. To put it metaphorically, the Congress was not a tall story of success but a story of standing tall – story of dreaming big, living up to it and concluding it with meaningful goals. It not only made the community proud but also the host city and laid a new bench mark for future Congresses. If you will delve deeper into the issue, you will also find interesting articles on innovation, social entrepreneurship, views of leading businessmen and professionals who shared their concerns at the Congress on our community’s future, and then of course the prestigious awards won by our community members in various disciplines. The appointment of Chief Justice Sarosh Kapadia, to the highest office of the Judiciary, the Supreme Court of India this year was great news. His strict adherence to everything that a true Zoroastrian values and cherishes - truth, integrity, obligation towards his duty are truly admirable. The issue is visually splendid. Enjoy it! A Message from the President
As WZCC has evolved over the years it has become amply clear that the psyche of the young Parsi Zoroastrians is largely one of the “Security First” and “Aversion to Risk taking”. This is despite the immense opportunities which the current liberalized environment offers. Hence, the thrust has to be directed to surmount this mental block. WZCC is a very loosely knit organization with enormous autonomy enjoyed by each region and the various Chapters. While this has its obvious advantages it considerably dilutes forging closer links through better communication. A serious attempt has been made to address this deficiency by appointing a Secretary General with a global role to provide a bridge between the Chapters. WZCC’s core philosophy is to create an enabling environment to inculcate selfreliance, among the younger generation. To achieve this, the India Chapter has made strenuous efforts to organize Business Plan Contests. Sessions have been held with experienced businessmen and professionals to brief entrepreneurs to make bankable plans. Workshops have been held on business valuations. Entrepreneurs desiring funding have been put in touch with potential investors and banks. Incubation programs are also being planned, where few youngsters will be exposed to seasoned corporate executives to resolve their problems. A panel of Mentors with varied industrial background is being formed. Interactive sessions are being arranged for SMEs in collaboration with specialized institutions like Cluster Pulse (joint body set up by Indian and German Governments to provide technical assistance to SMEs), National Small Industries Corporation and ONICRA (credit rating agency) to help improve competitiveness through use of eGovernance, eBusiness and ICT Services.

The Youth Wing has been motivated to organize events, where they can meet seasoned entrepreneurs to share their live experiences. All these activities are designed for being replicated globally, relevant to the milieu, and are not particularly India – Centric. We feel convinced that WZCC is marching ahead with confidence in the right direction. WZCC will gather greater strength and credibility as members see tangible progress of our endeavors’ to unleash the spark of entrepreneurship by showcasing success stories. I dedicate this write-up to Godrej & Boyce Mfg. Co. in recognition of their generous offer to hold a program for WZCC members on an innovation concept, its development in terms of performance characteristics and market promotion of a mini refrigerator for the rural areas, called “Chotukool”. The average life of a Fortune 500 company is estimated at less than 40 years, with success declining over time. If an organization – the Godrej Group – has been successful and long standing, then it must have adapted to changing times. It must have entrepreneurially tried new things or acquired the benefits derived from innovation. A recent survey conducted with 400 global CEOs on key factors that drive manufacturing competitiveness reveal that it is Innovation, more than any other factor that will drive progress of a business. We must, therefore, realize the importance of this single success parameter in business. The world famous Toyota Production System (the emphasis on Lean Manufacturing) is quoted in management literature as an example of “unconscious” innovation. The two US companies, Google and Apple, are perceived to be “natural innovators”, because their culture and mindset is towards Innovation. Another interesting example concerns aviation (reference Newsweek’s July 26, 2010 issue). In 1985, commercial aircraft consumed 8 litres of fuel per passenger per 100 kms; in comparison, modern aircraft consumed between 3 and 4 litres. However, the new Airbus 380 carrying 800 passengers, now in service, consumes less than 3 litres of fuel per passenger per 100 kms. That’s amazing when you consider that the Toyota hybrid – ‘Prius’, will burn 3.8 litres to travel the same distance as compared to a modern car with an 1800 cc engine consuming approximately 10 litres for the same distance. 8

That brings us to the question of what is Innovation. Reference to two dictionaries provides the following meaning: • A truly revolutionary change • A departure from the old • Introduction of new methods • Breaking a precedent • Introduction of a new product or service developed from study and experimentation.
mind, is that of the Tata Motors ‘Nano’ – an outstanding example. Unlike what one might expect, the NANO was not a product of market research and the Chotukool by Godrej might just fall in the same basket, meaning it too, as I understand, is not a product of market research. The Nano as we now know started as a concept from Mr. Ratan Tata, to provide an entry level car that would be affordable, safe and environment friendly. The realisation of Mr. Tata’s vision was made possible by adoption of a set of criteria before the design stage, viz.

Let’s look at just two of the many outstanding examples of Innovation in our country. 1. The Economic Times of 24th July 2010, in the Editorial column, covered the news of the HRD Minister, Mr. Kapil Sibal unveiling a personal computer – a sleek touch screen device, that’s Wi-Fi enabled for internet access with all the applications available on a PC. This tablet PC is ultra power efficient requiring just 2-Watt supply or a battery backup via a solar cell. The device has no hard-disk and instead makes use of the memory disk. Users would have access to Microsoft Office suite equivalent applications, with open source Linux software. The tablet PC was developed by teams at the Indian Institute of Technology sponsored by the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication technology. What is most remarkable is that it costs Rs.1500. This path breaking innovation points at a world of possibilities for dramatic technology aided development and universal access to information and technology. 2. When we speak of Innovation the thought that comes immediately to

What is most important is that the management created an environment in which the team, never had to fear failure and at all times had a chance to use their creativity to the maximum. We must recognize this as a basic motivational requirement for Innovation to thrive. This note I thought would help our members to better understand the concepts, the development process, setting quality / performance standards and a new product introduction process that is involved in yet another noteworthy innovation – the Chotukool. The idea to address the basic daily cooling needs of the people at an affordable cost was inspired by the concepts of Disruptive Innovation. The larger vision behind this initiative was to make the lives of the people at the bottom of the pyramid Brighter! Chotukool uses advanced solid state technology to cool instead of traditional compressors. It operates on 12 V DC. Current product has a small foot print (less than 592 X 418 X 472 mm) and storage volume 12 of 43L/30L in two variants. Light weight fully plastic body makes it highly mobile! The unconventional top opening ensures cold air settles down in the cabinet to minimize heat loss and power consumption. It keeps the basic needs of water, milk, vegetables and fruits fresh and cool for a typical
family of four or five. It works best in typical ambient upto 35°C. It is priced at around half the current entry level direct cool refrigerators (Rs. 3490 - Rs 3790 depending on specific variant). Chotukool is a new category by itself. It is not a refrigerator. It serves a distinctly different purpose. It also serves a new segment of potential consumers. Hence it needs personalized demonstrations to communicate and deliver its distinct value proposition. We plan to reach out to the potential consumers through a community network that also improves the livelihood of the participating members of the community as they canvass and demonstrate the product. Besides, we believe it has tremendous potential as an earning asset in the hands of small entrepreneurs in their business
of selling products and offering services that needs some cooling – for example cool drink vending or milk produce sales. We believe Chotukool will impact the living standard, life style and the livelihood (we call this as 3L DI vision) of the people at the bottom of the pyramid. Currently the initial model of Chotukool is test marketed in Maharashtra. Over time, based on market response, we plan to come out with a range of sizes and models in Chotukool category. The product is designed and manufactured by Godrej in its own factory in India.

WZCC AGM 2009 A grand success in Dubai
Directors set future goals of WZCC at the AGM The World Zarathushti Chamber of Commerce (WZCC) a global body for entrepreneurs and professionals held their Pre and Global AGM funtions in Dubai, during the Congress time. PRE AGM - 27th December 2009 There was no doubt in the mind of President, Kersi Limathwalla when he said that WZCC is a special organization; one of a kind, dedicated to business, economic and community prosperity. As the Directors and Members gathered at the meeting, what caught everyone’s attention was the immaculate arrangement made by the Congress Organizers in the Conference room. Ample floor space was made available to attendees to interact freely, display their products and services and review the progress achieved on the landmark initiatives introduced over the years by WZCC to keep the entrepreneurship spirit alive among its Diaspora worldwide. The Pre AGM planned 2 day’s ahead of the Congress provided ample opportunity to the forum to have meaningful discussions. There was a big round of applause when Eric Engineer’s appointment as a Youth Director was announced to the Administrative Board of WZCC. Also the Business Plan Program introduced by the India Chamber, for the benefit of entrepreneurs as well as investors was considered a path breaking move. New ideas and bold initiatives were disscussed. Thereafter the meeting adjourned with the announcement of the following five goals, thus providing future direction to WZCC: o Youth involvement o Facilitate mentoring o Set up funding mechanism o Provide better networking opportunities o Create further awareness and visibility of WZCC
Global AGM - 29th December 2009 Once again the Al Dhiyafah room at the Crown Plaza hotel was completely packed by WZCC members, Directors and ExDirectors and the Congress delegates in the afternoon on 29th December 2009. In his opening remarks, President Mr.Kersi Limathwalla thanked the organizers of WZC, the Zoroastrians in the Middle East Region and WZCC Regional Director, Meher Bhesania for their warmth and hospitality. He said, he was privileged to have led the Chamber as the President in the year 2009 and said that as WZCC is a non-profit organization, members should look into the qualitative aspect of performance rather than the top and bottom lines of the financial statement. In the last ten years, 21chapters had been established and he welcomed the newest chapter in Vancouver and thanked the efforts of Fariborz Rahnamoon. He added that the commitment, voluntary efforts and inspiring leadership of Regional Directors, Chapter Chairs had created a good image for the Chamber as an engine for community’s prosperity reminiscent of an era when our Community was recognized as a leading business community with impeccable integrity. He elatedly announced the nomination of Mr. Nusli Wadia, Chairman of Bombay Dyeing as the Honorary Member of WZCC for the year 2009. The Board Members appreciated the efforts of Eric Engineer, who had within a short time introduced several interactive initiatives with Young Representatives of the Chamber. Going forward each chapter will have one Youth Representative to motivate more youth to join WZCC. The monthly news letter published by Kersi Commissariat, effective April 2009 was considered a good initiative. Also the Business Plan Program arranged by Cyrus Bagwadia and his group of five members from India Chamber brought in 40 business plans of young entrepreneurs and 20 investors on the same platform was considered effective.

WORLD ZARATHUSHTI CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ANNOUNCES ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM Last year WZCC conducted a path breaking event – Business Plan contest – with astounding success. There were 42 applications and 6 were chosen for cash awards up to Rs.50,000 each. Five new businessmen have got launched as a result of this unique effort of WZCC. This flagship program is in line with its Mission, “Fostering the spirit of Entrepreneurship”. This year the program is named Entrepreneur Development Program (EDP) as it has a better fit with the Program Objective statement: To coach, train and mentor prospective and budding entrepreneurs and create enabling processes to convert his / her passion or idea into a quality Business Plan and assist him/her through this road-map towards setting up a successful venture. WZCC are now inviting applications for participation in this Program. The EDP will include a series of workshops to impart practical and realistic knowledge, most pertinent to being a successful businessman. The participants will have the opportunity to meet and interact with well-known business and professional people. The workshops are so designed to be most useful not only for a start up enterprise but also to a running business and individuals wishing to learn the basics of entrepreneurship. Besides attractive cash awards, sponsorships will be offered to the award winners for the Best Business Plan. A panel of expert mentors and highly experienced advisors would be made available to all participants to guide them through and even after the event. There is no other similar community program so professionally organized. The maximum number of participants is limited to 30. Therefore hurry up and enroll yourself along with your participation Fee of Rs.2000/-. Justice Sarosh Homi Kapadia, the most senior judge of the Supreme Court, on Wednesday May, 12th, 2010 was sworn in as the 38th Chief Justice of India, by President Pratibha Patil.

The swearing in of 62 - year - old Justice Kapadia at Rashtrapati Bhawan was attended among others by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, his cabinet colleagues, outgoing Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and other dignitaries.
The newly appointed Chief Justice of India, S. H. Kapadia, said in his letter dated 3rd May 2010, to the former Supreme Court judge V R Krishna Iyer, that “I come from a poor family. I started my career as a class IV employee and the only asset I possess is integrity and hope to fulfill the constitutional obligations to achieve the goal of inclusive growth.
Justice Kapadia was born, in Mumbai on 29th September 1947. He did his B.A. (Hons.), LL.B from Jai Hind College and Government Law College.
Even as a judge of the Supreme Court, I have used my knowledge of accounts and economics for the welfare of the downtrodden including tribal’s and workmen. I hope to fulfill my obligation to constitution in the matter of achieving the goal of inclusive growth.”
He joined as an advocate in the Bombay High Court in September, 1974 and became the additional judge in October 1991 and a permanent judge in 1993. In a little over a decade he became the Chief Justice of Uttaranchal High Court in August 2003 and was ultimately elevated to the Bench of Supreme Court of India in Dec. 2003. During his tenure in the apex court he delivered several historic, landmark judgments, which earned him accolades from the Bench and the Bar in equal measure. On 12th May 2010, Sarosh Homi Kapadia was appointed as Chief Justice to the highest office of the Judiciary, the Supreme Court of India. Throughout his life’s journey he has remained untouched by any corrupt practices, lending full credence to his, by now legendary remark, “the only asset I possess is integrity”….. He has strictly adhered to everything that a true Zoroastrian values and cherishes truth, integrity, and an obligation towards duty above all else. Promoting Social Entrepreneurship for Poverty Alleviation Dinesh Awasthi Professor & Director, Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India, Ahmedabad (India). Social Entrepreneurship is a new concept that offers market-based solutions to social problems. Profit beyond self is its hall mark. Traditionally people think of not-for-profits as being responsible for creating social value and for-profits for creating economic value. Social entrepreneurship brings these dichotomies together, marrying social interest and market mechanisms to create both social and economic value with a new type of institution. The hallmark of social entrepreneurship seems to be its ability to combine social interests with business practices to effect social change. I define a ‘Social Enterprise as a for-profit socially relevant, innovative and sustainable economic activity that provides goods and services at an affordable price to people who are at the bottom of the pyramid. It brings goods and services within the reach and affordability of the people who otherwise would find it difficult to afford. Driven by a new breed of pragmatic, innovative, and visionary social activists and their networks, social entrepreneurship thus borrows from an electric mix of business, charity, and social movement models to reconfigure solutions to community problems and deliver sustainable new social value. Poverty Alleviation through Social Entrepreneurship: Lessons from Two Cases from India (i) The Rickshaw Bank: Heralding Change for Rickshaw Pullers The world faces a multitude of problems like inadequate education and health systems, housing, unemployment, skill deficits, environmental threats, declining trust in political institutions, entrenched poverty, high crime rates, low purchasing power, etc. All this offers enormous opportunity not only to innovate but also to up-scale the innovations. Through two cases from India, we would see how their leaders’ unprecedented foresight and vision led to tangible impact.One such case we came across is that of ‘Rickshaw Bank’ set up in Guwahati a city in the North-Eastern part of the country, by a young veterinarian Dr. Pradip Sarmah. He observed that several rural poor migrants end up in plying man-pulled rickshaws. The rent charged by the rickshaw owners is so high that they barely manage to scrape a living. He organized them in groups like based on the Grameen Bank fundamentals, and also found out innovative solutions to the initial investments. He approached Oil and Natural Gas Commission, one of the fortune 500 public companies and convinced them to give advertisements on rickshaws at a rate that were very competitive. The rickshaws carried the advertisements on the rear of the rickshaw for three years for Rs. 7,000. And the cost of rickshaw at that time was the same. Today he has expanded his operations in several other states and runs his social enterprise in a very profitable manner. The Rickshaw Bank in Guwahati, Assam Centre for Rural Development (CRD) an NGO working in the developmental sector came up with an innovative idea of running a Rickshaw Bank. The project has been under implementation since November 2004. Dr. Pradip Kumar Sarmah, Executive Director of the organization observed that the rural masses are increasingly migrating to urban areas in search of better livelihood opportunities but due to lack of skills they end-up facing even more misery. Quite a few of them start pulling rickshaws, which they find easy to access. There are 8,000,000 estimated rickshaw pullers in India. 95 percent of these rickshaw pullers are victims of high daily rents making it nearly impossible for them to survive with dignity. This is primarily because Rickshaw Pullers are constrained 14

by lack of access to basic formal banking services such as loans, savings, insurance, etc. The Rickshaw Bank addresses each of these concerns by facilitating their access to basic financial services and providing identity proof to protect them from social stigma and harassment. Moreover, after repaying the loans, the rickshaw pullers can become owners of rickshaws. The model is commercially sustainable for the service to be adopted or expanded to other needy areas.
Business Fundamentals: i. The rickshaws are manufactured locally, either in an in-house manufacturing unit operated by the CRD or supplied by local manufacturers. These are then taken by a five-member common liability group that acts as the social collateral towards the ‘loan’. The products available to the target community is the Rickshaw; insurance facility for the puller, the passengers and the vehicle, license for puller and the vehicle, medi-claim, uniform and identity card. Fee-based benefits are cooking gas connectivity, emergency loan or need based purchase items. ii. Designed by the India Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati and assembled by CRD’s production center, the Bank rickshaw is more aerodynamic, lighter than the traditional vehicle and has safer seating arrangement.
iii. Rickshaws pullers, who are members of the Rickshaw Bank, form garages in different parts of the city to manage their savings, repair the rickshaws, update business records, and collect rent. iv. Since the puller has a daily earning pattern, the repayment is collected on a daily basis. This revenue for the Bank is utilised towards the cost of the rickshaw, insurance premium, license, uniform, and operating costs. v. Finance is raised on a Loan-cumAdvertisement based model. The advertisement revenue also helps to reduce risk in case of delayed repayments from pullers. vi. The entire package initially costs Rs. 7,000 but now with the introduction of
VAT and modification of the rickshaw design, the cost has gone up to Rs. 9,000. Funding of the Programme: Initially, CRD mobilized fund for manufacturing improvised rickshaws from Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and Hindustan Leaver Limited (HLL) by advertising them on rickshaws for the period of 3 years at Rs. 7000 per rickshaw. Each of these three corporate houses paid for their advertisement on 100 rickshaws. Subsequently, ICICI bank provided Rs. 4.00 million to CRD as a term loan, followed by the State Bank of India (SBI) that supported CRD with a term loan of Rs. 3.00 million with a tripartite agreement among CRD-SBI and Rickshaw Pullers.
Programme Outreach In Assam, where it all started, the Bank has reached a milestone of 390 rickshaw pullers becoming owners, and there are another 510 rickshaw pullers who will soon join the league. From Assam, the Bank has expanded its activities to several other states like Tripura, Tamilnadu, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Delhi. The income of most of the rickshaw pullers has registered an increase of 60 per cent and they are encouraged to save as most of them can now open an account either in the post office or bank with the help of their photo-identity cards. (ii) The other case is that of the well known ‘Jaipur Foot’. The products have been developed in a manner that they meet the requirements of India’s poor, like working in the farm, squatting, walking bare foot, etc. The design of the Jaipur Foot is such that it has these flexibilities. While it is free for the poor, the rich pay and most of the time cross subsidise. Most important, the cost of Jaipur Foot is 1/225th times the cost of a foot made by SACH Foot of the US. Moreover, it takes a few hours only to make and fit the limb unlike the SACH that takes about three months for the same. And; from day one, it has been self sufficient and has changed the lives of hundreds of thousands of poor across the globe. Jaipur Foot: Sensitivity makes all the difference to serving the poor Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS), Jaipur was set up in 1975 as a non-government, non-profit organisation for helping the physically, particularly the financially weak among them. BMVSS is the largest organization, for the handicapped in the world in terms of fitment of artificial limbs and callipers etc. In India alone, 10 million people are suffering from loco-motor disabilities. The idea of this humanitarian project was born out of a trauma. In 1969 Mr. Mehta had met with a serious car accident in which his leg was crushed. In March 1975, the occasion of the 2500th deathanniversary of Lord Mahaveer, inspired by the Lord’s Compassion and kindness to all, Mr. D. R. Mehta, a senior bureaucrat, envisioned and set up BMVSS. Jaipur Foot/Limb which was developed in 1968 by an artist named Ram Chandra Sharma, who himself had suffered a great deal because of a total accident, provided an alternative. It was made of rubber of different types, wood etc, making it a multi-flex foot, closest to the human foot in functional terms. However, despite these features of Jaipur Foot, in the first seven years, from 1968 to March 1975 (when BMVSS was set up), hardly 50 limbs could be fitted by the persons andorganization dealing with it. In the next seven years (1975-1982) over 10,583 limbs could be fitted. The patients from all parts of India started coming to Jaipur. Now, every year BMVSS fits 17,000 - 20,000 artificial limbs. The work has spread all over India, through sixteen branches of BMVSS. Further, almost 40-50 on-the-spot-limb-fitment-mobile-camps are held every year, reaching the most disadvantaged people in the far and distant areas.
BMVSS supported more than 30 artificial limb fitting independent institutions in the country by transferring its technology and giving training to their personnel. BMVSS has also held camps in 20 countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America and fitted more than 15,000 artificial limbs over time. One of the reasons for increasing spread is the constant effort to up grade technology. It should also be mentioned here that while the poor are being given products free-of-charge, the institution ensures that quality is not compromised with. Jaipur Limb Technology developed in Jaipur, India, is the most functional limb technology in the world. It has the following special features. i. The limbs made with this technology are closest to a normal human limb. The Jaipur Foot has virtually got the same range of movements which a normal human foot has. In other words, it is an all-functional, allterrain limb. The other limbs with SACH foot cannot have these flexions and functions. There are some Multi Axial Feet but these allow specific limited flexions and functions. ii. Jaipur Foot is cosmetically closest to the human foot with toes etc., and is water proof as many other artificial limbs in the world. Jaipur Foot is a dual purpose foot. It may be worn with shoes or without shoes depending on the desire and the need of the patients. iii. The normal life of Jaipur Foot piece is around 3 years. iv. The sockets for Jaipur Limb are made of polymers as adopted in other modern artificial limbs across the world. This has come to replace the wood and araldite laminated sockets which were very heavy and cumbersome. With the availability
of polymers in socket making, BMVSS shifted to the HDPE pipes which made the fitment modern, better and lighter. v. The above knee prosthesis is of highly advanced ischial containment variety. vi. It is a quick fit limb. A below-knee, prosthesis can be made in three hours. Above-knee prosthesis can be made in one or two days. This is done while following all the technical requirements including those relating to alignment. Against 3 months required of fitment in the case of Sach Foot of USA the Jaipur Foot takes only 1-3 hours. vii. The Jaipur Foot technology is such that it enables to hold on-the-spot-limb/ caliper-fitment-camps in remote areas where the limbs / caliper are custom fabricated and delivered mostly on the same day. viii. While the Sach Foot costs close to US$ 8,000, the cost of Jaipur Foot works out to barely US$ 35. Impact: Since 1975, the organisation has provided artificial limbs to 310,220 people. The foot has been a great success in wartorn areas where landmines cause loss of limbs. The Jaipur Foot is available in 21 countries other than India, including Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Nigeria. The 9th World Zoroastrian Congress (WZC), a four-day gathering of the Zoroastrian Diaspora across the globe, was held in Dubai from the 28th to the 31st of December 2009. Over 750 delegates, representing the Zoroastrian Diaspora in various countries such as Iran, India, USA, Canada, UK, Pakistan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand and the Middle East participated in the Congress, which provided a whole new experience to the delegates and the host city.
Jubilee year had some key messages. First, Dubai hosting the Congress gave many delegates coming from far off countries a chance to experience the vibrant and cosmopolitan culture in the emirate and understand why it is one of the fastest growing cities in the world. Secondly, Dubai is synonymous with what Zoroastrians are reputed world over – small, yet strong; progressive yet deeply rooted in culture and traditions. Dubai is a cultural melting pot but the distinct flavor of tradition and local culture is not traded for being cosmopolitan.Thirdly, no destination would be as ideal as Dubai for Zoroastrians who are always on the lookout for new opportunities. Despite the global economic slowdown and its repercussions, Dubai continues to retain a high level of confidence and goodwill, which it earned by virtue of its spirit of innovation and focus on entrepreneurship, creativity and excellence. Bringing Zoroastrians closer to Dubai was undoubtedly the best example of a mutually beneficial association. Hence, the 9th World Zoroastrian Congress was truly a case of the right people at the right place, at the right time.
The Congress saw strong endorsement from the ruling family of Dubai with H.H Sheikh Hasher Maktoum Juma Al Maktoum, Director of Information, Government of Dubai and H.H Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation and Chairman and CEO of Emirates attending the event and interacting with the Zoroastrian community leaders. The high profile delegates at the Congress included Lord Karan Billimoria CBE, DL; Nadir Godrej, Managing Director, Godrej Industries Ltd; Neville Shroff, Chairman and CEO, Shroff and Company, Hong Kong; Pallonji Mistry, Shapoorji Pallonji Mid East Group; Jal Shroff, Managing Director, Fossil (East) Ltd., and Director of Fossil Inc.; Sam Balsara, Chairman and Managing Director, Madison World; Dr Esfandiar Ektiary, the Zoroastrian Member of Iranian Parliament; H.E Mr. Talmiz Ahmed, Indian Ambassador to the UAE, H.E Venu Rajamony, Indian Consul General to the UAE, noted businessmen Alayar Dabestani, USA and Dr. Rostam Khosraviani, President of Tehran Anjuman to name a few. Held in Dubai for the first time, the Congress adopted ‘Unity through the sands of time’ as its central theme, highlighting the most significant attribute of the Zoroastrian Diaspora worldwide and a legacy being passed on to the younger members of the community. WZC, which has now completed 50 years, embodies the inherent strengths of the Zoroastrian community and its universally acclaimed spirit of unity, entrepreneurship and generosity. Though known to be the smallest community in the world, Zoroastrians have earned a name as a progressive people who pursue excellence and create new benchmarks in their chosen fields. For Dubai, the 9th WZC was perhaps the biggest gathering of world-leading industrialists, businessmen, thought leaders, and professionals from a single community ever held in the city.The fact that Dubai was chosen to host the Congress in its Golden 16

But to make it happen was not an easy task for the organizers. Ever since the torch was handed over to them at the 8th WZC in London by the organizers, the Congress Chair, Meher Bhesania, started in right earnest to ensure that the 9th Congress becomes a unique event that Dubai and the Zoroastrian community can always remember with pride and a sense of accomplishment. The calendar of events touched all strategic areas such as dialogue, interaction, business, goalsetting, mentoring, leisure and recreation. The ruling family and officialdom in Dubai, especially officials from the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industries and the Jebel Ali Free Zone, extended their wholehearted support. With the sharp international focus on Dubai and strong interest in its emergence as a global capital the Congress was sold-out almost 12 weeks ahead. Cries of joy and excitement rented the air at the Crowne Plaza Dubai as the delegates started arriving at the venue a day in advance on 28th December, greeting their old friends and relatives. By evening the atmosphere turned solemn with Vada Dastoorji Khurshed Kaikobad Dastoor of Pak Iranshah Udwada, Ervad Yezdi Aibara (Mumbai), Ervad Pallonji Dastoor (Mumbai) and Ervad Darayus Dastoor (Dubai) performing the khushali nu Jashan(thanksgiving) ceremony. Messages from heads of state and ministers of countries which are home to Zoroastrian Diaspora were read out by community leaders from the respective countries. Those who sent their blessings and best wishes to the Congress include H.E Mrs. Pratibha Patil, President of India, H.E Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister of India and H.E Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, the Chairperson of India’s Ruling United Progressive Alliance. These were delivered by Dinshaw Mehta, Dadi Mistry and Zarine Commissariat. Dr Esfandiar Ektiary delivered the greetings from President Ahmedinajad and Parliament Speaker Dr. Ali Larijani from Iran. She added, “on this momentous occasion, let’s salute to the spirit of Zoroastrianism and let’s endeavor to make this Congress an occasion to celebrate – a celebration of our rich past and what binds us together, a celebration of the contribution of the community’s resilience and strength in the face of challenges. Calling himself as a beneficiary of Zoroastrian/Parsi benevolence and tracing his road to success from humble beginnings, Lord Billimoria said: “Sometimes people ask me if being a Parsi has helped me succeed. I believe the Zoroastrian emphasis on good thoughts, good words and good deeds definitely helps.

Sam Balsara presented a blueprint for the community to reposition itself as a leading light for other communities and as a beacon of hope for its own members. He identified religion, demography, supporting the poor, entrepreneurship, women, health, community organizations, youth and branding as the key focus areas for Zoroastrians.
The YLEP presentation was followed by presentation on ‘Operation Eye Sight’ by Shahnaz Tarapore and Dr. Behram Pastakia, a program pursued by Dubai, of WZC 2000. Over 750 eye glasses were collected in Dubai of which 200 came from Pakistan, thanks to efforts of Toxy Cowasjee and all 750 eye glasses / frames were shipped by Shahnaz to the Lions In Sight, Sri Lanka.

Parizad Kolah Marshall brought her endearing smile and infectious enthusiasm to the 9th World Zoroastrian Congress, and anchored the event for the first two days exuding warmth and confidence.
In the afternoon the Regional Directors of YLEP introduced their teams from India, Iran, UK, North America, Australia and Dubai who made successful presentations on their projects which they had done in their regions for helping the community. The session was kicked off by Sorab Mistry and Cyrus Magol, consultants to the YLEP Program who explained the overall strategy and purpose of launching this program. The Youth shared their dreams, aspirations and endeavors with their fellow Zoroastrians. The intensity, passion and commitment which filled their voices seemed to have laid many doubts to rest and the youngsters walked back to wide applause from the audience.

H.H Sheikh Hashar Maktoum Juma Al Maktoum was the Guest of Honor in the evening on the opening day. Day 2 (29th December, 2009) The Congress reconvened on the Second Day morning to receive H.H Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum who opened a trade show organized by Zoroastrian enterprises. The third day of the 9th World Zoroastrian Congress saw the reins being handed over to new leadership teams and future leaders going into a huddle to discuss the goals set for them. Youth from India, Pakistan, Iran, UK, Canada, UAE and Australia held a brainstorming session with Sorab Mistry as part of the Youth Vision Conference exercise in the morning and laid down goals for the Youth Leadership Program to be adhered to worldwide.
Thereafter presentations were made by Dinshaw Mehta, Chairman BPP and Trustees Arnavaz Mistry and Jimmy Mistry. They spoke on the multifarious activities of BPP. Their presentation was followed by ZYNG, Paurush Jila and Phil Madon.
Meanwhile, health took centre stage at the main venue with a panel of eminent doctors Dr. Noshir Wadia, Dr. Anahita Pundole, Dr. Behram Pastakia, Dr. Rustom Soonawala and Dr. Zenobia Madon, leading an informative and enlightening discussion spanning neurological disorders, infertility, breast cancer, allergy, asthma and other disorders of serious concern. Sam Balsara, outlined the goals of the Congress in six focus areas - Global Working Group, Entrepreneurship, Youth, Women, Health, and Community Organizations. He said that these goals would be followed up by Congress Organizers with key Zoroastrian Organization for developing beneficial programs for the Zoroastrian community. Call to Entrepreneurship Say it with verse … Nadir Godrej loves to make his speeches in verse form. He recited one at the Congress that vividly captured the history of Zoroastrian Entrepreneurship in India. When asked about the rhyme scheme, he said it was based on the Pushkin sonnet form. From where does he find time to read heavy literature … and write?!!
Definitely one of the highlights of the Congress was the brilliant poem written by Nadir Godrej and beautifully rendered by him. Zoroastrians from ancient times Ventured forth to East and West, Adapted to various climes And brought the world the very best. Of merchandise and thoughts as well Their partners could always tell Their dealings were upright and fair This reputation everywhere Helped the Parsi merchant shine.
The ships on which the merchants sailed Were built buy Parsi enterprise The East India Company availed These skills for its steady rise. The Wadia’s built the biggest ships Ships that took the longest trips Everywhere their ships were sought So Bombay became a major port A place where businessmen could thrive.
They prospered in the China trade Where giant fortunes were soon made But opulence was not the sign The Parsi merchant had arrived The wealth for which he had strived Was used to help one and all For charity was enjoined And because of it they stood tall. The nickname Readymoney coined For Sir Cowasjee Jehangir Makes it unmistakably clear That Parsi merchants had a stash But for a cause they’d hand out cash!
Now cotton mills became a fad Though JN Tata also had A few, he boldly chose to strive For industries that build a nation Even though their creation Would stretch the Tata’s very thin. And when he died the sons went on Their troubles were borne with a grin His mantle they would bravely don And though the group was near death The brothers fought to their last breath. The group was able to survive And in good time began to thrive They never took the easy way But built all that the nation needed And in this aim they succeeded. The Taj Hotel still holds sway They pioneered hydropower and steel And gave their workers the fairest deal.
The pioneer was Jeejeebhoy In trade and then philanthropy In Bombay everywhere you see JJ this or that, We enjoy His munificence to this day Sir Jamsetjee showed us the way. 24

The Tata’s fought colonial might And strove to make India strong JRD faced a different plight Socialist policies that went wrong The airline that he built and prized Was callously nationalized He looked beyond the grief and pain Without considering personal gain. He flew Air India to a lofty height Then politicians pushed him out That moment, without a doubt Marked the airline’s downward flight. But JRD’s great success Was the founding of TCS And greater still was the succession For Ratan was the perfect heir. His entry was a stormy session Till all the Satraps, reigning there One by one were asked to quit The group then ran on Ratan’s writ. Once again they could succeed As the economy was freed Tata Steel which had grown fat Was made to be lean and mean. Such change was quite unforeseen Till Ratan put them on the mat. But TCS was the asset that Gave Ratan strength to throw his hat So boldly in the global ring
Some wondered why he ventured there Could it become a deadly fling? But I don’t think that is fair Although his timing could have been better We should salute this true go-getter Not second guess him with hindsight The group has such a mighty bite That they can chew what they like! His greatest deed was something small He took the quite outrageous call That he could replace the motorbike With a car that’s cheap and safe to boot The critics thought, “What a hoot!” A lakh he said, a lakh it was The Nano is a solid car And when asked why, he said “Because A promise is a promise”. He’ll go far. For thinking big is Ratan’s way A challenge always makes his day Especially one with a common touch His latest feat is known as Swach A way to make our water clean At a cost affordable to all. In our esteem, he stands so tall Because his group and trusts are seen As working for the common good The world now wonders whoever could? Replace him in this mighty task The Tata’s stand very tall. But were there others one might ask? The Wadias one would recall. I hope it won’t cause some contention If in passing I were to mention My own grand uncle Ardeshir Who in his time caused quite a stir! The story that I have been told States he befriended Mahatma Gandhi To whom he said, “Though freedom’s dandy And sure it’s good to be bold But how can we be truly free Without a vibrant economy”? Mahatma Gandhi wisely agreed His friend, Ardeshir, was quite right But turned to him to sow the seed Of India’s economic might. He was a lawyer, no scientist But a Ph. D. was never missed. With experiments he proceeded, And learnt the theory as he needed A fireproof safe was invented With inspiration and much toil
He made his soap from vegetable oil. He made the best but lamented That foreign goods were preferred But all the same he persevered. His brother Pirojsha consolidated And thanks to him I now stand here That story has oft been stated I’ll say no more, you needn’t fear! I surely couldn’t complete this history Without mentioning Pallon Mistry In construction he truly towers And silently he lends his powers To the mighty Tata group In which he holds a major share. And now I think it’s only fair That I bring bankers in the loop Pochkhanawala takes first rank For setting up Central Bank. Though A D Shroff built institutions, He deserves a special prize For fighting socialist delusions With Forum of Free Enterprise. Then Parsi Entrepreneurship slows The reason why no one knows. The professional path to fame was found For doctors, lawyers now abound And scientists are also seen Large groups we no longer find Replaced perhaps by a different kind. New enterprise comes on the scene And unlike what had come before, Professionals knock on the door M N Dastur comes to mind The quintessential engineer. In the Agas and Forbes you will find A similar pattern appears. In Biotech there’s Villoo Patell There’s Serum Institute as well Which the Poonawallas sired But Haffkine scientists were hired! That doesn’t quite fit my theme But Keki Gharda fits the bill A synthesizer of great skill. The media world fits in the scheme While Ronnie Screwvala produces well Sam Balsara knows how to sell.
India wasn’t the only place For Zoroastrian enterprise Iranians were also in the race. The Zartoshty brothers get the prize For Mehraban and Faridoon Proved to be a real boon For Zoroastrian causes everywhere. Earlier Arbab Rustam Guiv was there And Tahamtan Aresh in recent times And Lord Bilimoria brought much cheer To Indian food with Cobra beer. I think I’ve shown with these rhymes Our entrepreneurs are everywhere, Why There’s a Behram Avari Hotel in Dubai! The purpose of this lengthy story Is to look for future growth And not to bask in ancient glory. There’s not much harm if we do both. I urge all the youngsters here To start a business without fear With passion and a worthy cause Much courage, but a cautious pause. For a reasoned evaluation If in your dealings you are fair Your customers are shown great care Your business truly serves the nation. And if you stay true to your creed You too are destined to succeed And when you need a helping hand The WZCC’s there. Here you’ll find a like-minded band Of people with whom you can share Your trials and your tribulations And now they are in many nations. We have fixed perceptions about our strengths and weaknesses and are very quick to blame fate for our condition in life. We are so inured to accept what comes our way that we sometimes keep doing the same things over and over again expecting a different result. We are victims of our way of life, our routines and our habits. Habit # 1 We are born to win but are conditioned to fail - Believe in your self There are many reasons but no excuses. Never be a prisoner of the past – be an architect of the future because then and only then will you have the ability to move from one failure to another with renewed enthusiasm. Success is when skill meets opportunity; failure is when fantasy meets reality. Habit # 2 Never allow someone to be your priority while allowing yourself to be their option I have often been asked the secret of success. And my response; “I do not have a silver bullet that will underscore the secret of success. However I do know the secret of failure; trying to please all the people all the time”. This certainly is one bad habit an entrepreneur must religiously shy away from because attempting to always please will cause you to be defensive about your actions and be answerable about your behavior, to those that do not really count. our companies, and expect to be called business people and treated fairly. Some of us start businesses and expect to be profitable from day one. Trust me it just does not happen. In organizations, that I have had the pleasure of managing, we have always had one simple principle for everyone in the company; Compensation through Contribution, irrespective of their position in the company. Habit # 4 Chasing the Business NOT Attracting it – Working IN or ON the Business Are you working IN the business or ON the business? Are you chasing the business or learning to attract it? Most entrepreneurs believe that no one can do it better than them and that substantial time is wasted explaining things to others. So they do everything themselves. These entrepreneurs are working IN the business. Entrepreneurs must learn the art of working ON the business, for then and only then will the business grow and even prosper. When opportunity knocks you better be ready. When others see obstacles real entrepreneurs see opportunity. And this can only happen when one is working ON the business. Habit # 5 Doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result - Be prepared to change course. If you really want to succeed, get creative and develop a sense of urgency in your life. Prepare to change course and reevaluate. We cannot solve problems using the same kind of thinking we used to create them in the first place. And most often it is very simple; get back to basics. Continental airlines went from worst to first because the CEO convinced their employees that they could change course and be successful; and change course they
did. They re-evaluated their strengths, repositioned their weaknesses and decided to start right from the basics. Habit # 6 Strategic thinking without the Operational knowhow - Strategy and operations always go hand-in-hand When turning strategies into action never confuse effort with results, as effort is synonymous with activity, results are supported by action. And any strategy without the operational component cannot be successful. Fortune Magazine estimates that 70% of all strategies fail. Failure often occurs because of ineffective planning methods for turning strategies into executable projects. And this normally happens when they team that does the strategizing does not involve the team that will operate and execute the project. Habit # 7 Conservative behavior. When you are in business stick your neck out and risk it People have potential beyond their wildest imagination. Most people can do extraordinary things only if they learned to take risks. Yet most people don’t. They just watch life go by as if it would last forever. Don’t be afraid to go out on a limb; that’s where the fruit is. Our elders used to say - Old habits die hard. I say old habits never die; we just need to deal with them. In order to understand where an entrepreneur can go, it is important to understand where he has been. Habits are like shadows; they follow you wherever you go. So develop good habits, stay the course and remember Dear Entrepreneur - we need to think before we act, plan before we execute, try before we give up and most importantly risk before we expect reward.

WZCC Mumbai Youth Wing Overview & Goals Keeping in mind that the youth are the mind and face of tomorrow, in 2009, the WZCC decided to launch a concerted effort to mobilize, educate and inspire the youth of the community into entrepreneurship and/or business success. Since colonial times, the Parsis have earned a reputation of being pioneers in education and philanthropy. With the turn of centuries, the word Parsi has become synonymous with Entrepreneurship. Successfully launched in February 2010, the WZCC youth Wing in MUMBAI has been charged with: 1. Re-igniting the spirit of entrepreneurship within the youth of our community. 2. Creating a new generation of success stories in the professional world. 3. Enhancing the economic well-being of the community by: a) Increasing intellectual capital b) Growing existing business talent c) Creating more opportunities for growth The above aims will be accomplished in three ways: 1. Training & Development: It is the polishing that makes a stone turn into a diamond! WZCC organizes trainings which either develop new skill sets or enhance existing ones. Topics are chosen keeping in mind the entrepreneur, ranging from Body Language to Presentation Skills as well as Leadership Workshops. All the training sessions are complemented with a development session. It is with the aid of an activity or team case study, that the attendees put into practice what they have learned at the session. 2. Networking: Networking leads to NetWorthing! And it’s the increase in the net worth that every entrepreneur looks forward to. The WZCC Youth Wing conducts Networking Sessions frequently wherein budding entrepreneurs get an opportunity to interact with fellow entrepreneurs as well as generate contacts. This also allows professionals to gain contacts which allow them to grow in their careers. 3. Exposure: It is the endeavor of the WZCC Youth Wing to organize opportunities, for the youth, to showcase the different facets of business. a) Speaker Sessions where prominent business leaders /experts/ budding entrepreneurs interact with the participants. Post a brief talk, the floor is thrown open to questions. b) Mentoring opportunities: “A guide can help you walk over marsh lands”. The Committee acts as a middle man trying to assist the members find the right mentor. The mentor acts as a funnel to remove the teething troubles in the budding entrepreneur’s enterprise. c) Internships: Academics go hand in hand with practical training. The WZCC Youth Wing arranges internships for its members for stipulated periods. The internships are mainly for graduates and focus on shaping their employability. On the whole, activities are organized on a monthly basis keeping in mind requests from the members. The committee members work effortlessly coordinating the same. As rightly said, being an organizer too works to the benefit as it is here that the management and communication principles come into practice. Each chair has a different function and role to play but for the complete functionality of the team, all committees work unanimously and in conjunction with one another.

Events Summary, 2010 The vision of WZCC’s Mumbai Youth Wing remains to create a new generation of Zarathushti success stories in the corporate world. Steady and constant steps in this direction will allow the youth of the Zarathushti community to step into the successful shoes of their forefathers. Outlined below are a summary of events organized by the WZCC Mumbai Youth Wing. Excellence Across Generations - February, 2010
Mumbai Youth Wing. Students to chartered accountants and event management entrepreneurs to web solution company owners sat across from each other as they exchanged leads and referrals. A brief introduction into Networking Do’s and Don’ts was followed by an interactive session with Jimmy Mistry, Managing Director of Della Tecnica, an interior design and architecture firm and trustee of the Bombay Parsi Punchayet (BPP). Before ending the workshop, participants were given an opportunity to interact with each other on a one to one basis. Each pair got a minute and ten seconds to interact, exchange information and share a lead or referral. Leadership Workshop – May, 2010
On Saturday, February 27, 2010 WZCC launched its Mumbai Youth Wing. Approximately 200 people packed the terrace of the Diplomat Hotel in Colaba. Aptly named “Excellence Across Generations” the session was aimed at helping the younger Parsis to see that success comes with failure. The youth were shown a broader perspective of the business world and were given an opportunity to interact with the significant contributors of their community. Nadir Godrej, Managing Director of Godrej Ltd., spoke of an 80 crore loss his company suffered and how they didn’t back down, but rather recovered. Shernaaz Engineer, Editor of Jame Jamshed, the local Parsi Newspaper, spoke of the current state of affairs within the community. Kainaz Messman, Owner and upcoming Entrepreneur spoke of following your passion. The speakers also facilitated and led smaller teams in hands on interactive activities which showcased four core competencies of entrepreneurs: Linear thinking, problem solving, team building and creative innovation. Business Networking - March, 2010 & April, 2010:
The objectives of the youth wing’s first overnight leadership workshop were to: 1. Understand the capabilities demanded in today’s business & corporate environment 2. Assist individuals to grow in their respective careers or businesses 3. Create awareness in core corporate competencies such as finance, entrepreneurship & marketing 4. Strengthen interpersonal relationships 5. Remain motivated Each workshop session had a lecture component followed by a hands-on and interactive activity component which reinforced the lessons taught by the speaker. This workshop was anamalgamation of Finance, Marketing, Tips on Entrepreneurship and Motivation. Speakers included: • Yazdi Tantra, Director – On – Lyne Comtech (India) Pvt. Ltd. • Xerxes Master – Joint Managing Director of Master group of companies. • Umeed Kothavala – Founder and the CEO of Extentia Information technology. • Minocher Patel – Founder Director of Ecole Solitaire.
On Saturday March 27, 2010 the Mumbai Youth Wing held its first business networking session to a sold out crowd of young Parsi/Irani youth between the ages of 15 years – 40 years. The session was facilitated by Freyaz Shroff, chair of the WZCC

such as the various components of Body Language and forms of communication covered under Body Language. It stressed upon how each individual body part such as the head, eyes, face, hands etc. may be used effectively to convey a positive, impressive persona to the opposite person. The second part of the workshop was an activity session. The theme of the session was a role play. Eight teams comprising three participants each were given a situation, to be planned and enacted by them which were captured on video. Our facilitators Freyaz Shroff, owner of KurNiv Success Solutions a Corporate Training company and Bomi Kavina, an esteemed vocational training specialist & management consultant, reviewed the recordings with each participant and gave active feedback on their Body Language and presentation.

Body Language Workshop – June, 2010
Versatility is the key to developing good presentation skills. Presentations are an effective way to communicate to large numbers of people at the same time. However, it is not just about communicating information, but more importantly, to have advanced presentation skills you should be able to create interest and excitement in your subject and trust and enthusiasm in you. This is exactly what our speakers Hoshaang Gotla, owner of Checkmate an Event Management & Exponential Learning company along with Rohaan Cama a practicing lawyer in the Supreme Court conveyed to our participants. In the first part of the session participants learned the basics, including the fact that good presentation skills are not only through the transmission of the message but through the reception of the message as well. The second half of the session saw the participants break into groups with pre-determined topics on which they had to present using a PowerPoint and showcasing the new skills they had learned. Our facilitators then gave our participants detailed feedback which they could use to improve their skills. News from WZCC ME, Dubai WZCCME held their AGM on 6th March 2010 at the Crown Plaza Hotel Dubai. The event began with Cyrus Debara welcoming the members and guests and running through the highlights of the memorable year that 2009 had been with the historic 9th World Zoroastria Congress and the Global AGM of WZCC held in Dubai in December. He said “Nothing was more rewarding for the Congress organizers than to see 750 plus professionals and businessmen congregating and sending out a clear message of unity”. Meher Bhesania, WZCC Chairperson and Middle East Director then briefed the attendees on the progress of WZCC during 2009 stating how the three meetings were high profile events. The first meeting was held on 27th of February to honor Fali Major and Mr. Sam Balsara. The second was held on 2nd May to honor Dr. Villoo Morawala Patell and the third on 27th December 2009, the Global AGM during the Congress. She added that the World Zorastrian Congress held in Dubai would remain etched in the memories of all the attendees for a long time. Before stepping down as the Middle East Director, she acknowledged the efforts of the Founding Managing Committee Members - Barjor Bajan, Cyrus Magol, Kersy Bhesania, Noshir Motiwalla, Minoo Saher, Cyrus Vevaina and Firoz Irani who did an excellent job through the six years of their term since the year 2003. She announced the names of the new Managing Committee Members to whom the baton had been passed on and wished them luck and success. She said she would continue to act as the Director of SynergyZ which publication was launched in 2005 with support, knowhow and efforts of the Editorial Board Members Burjor Patel, Karl Mehta, Kersy Bhesania, Hoshi Siganporia, Nowshir Engineer and the Treasurer, Barjor Bajan. This was followed by a talk by the distinguished Chief Guest, H.E, Mr. Justin Siberell, Consul General, USA to the UAE. He praised the Zoroastrians as always being illustrious and in the forefront of business development in many countries. He then went on to enlighten the crowd with the statistics of USA’s trade activities with UAE as the 3rd largest bilateral

- Her father – she became an entrepreneur in Fine Arts thanks to her father who writes poetry. He always kept his word. She proudly notes that in Mumbai, being a Zoroastrian is a big deal. She stressed that we need to keep that integrity going.
He thanked the Zoroastrians for inviting him and his wife Arnavaz, to grace the function, and he said he had thoroughly enjoyed the evening.
- Her husband Boman Irani who she ardently announced is an epitome of parsi integrity. He lives by the tenets of good thoughts, good words and good deeds.
Next on the podium to share his achievements was the Guest of Honor, Boman Irani of reputed Rumstomji Builders in Mumbai. He said it was his great fortune to be born a Parsi as the Parsi lineage and Parsi reputation were surely a plus for his business sales. He also said he had learnt a lot about his trade from Dubai’s success stories. Addressing the youth, he emphasized that Lineage, Trust and Good Quality were the key drivers, and they should do every job with 100% dedication and honesty.

Parizaad Zorabian, was the next Guest of Honor. She captured the attention of one and all with her touching tribute to her family and her appeal to pray for her ailing grandmother, as she shared the experiences of her life from an ordinary little girl to a noted celebrity. She attributed her success to: - Her mother for instilling great confidence in her as she always said ‘there is nothing in the world you cannot do or achieve’. - Her Parsi teacher who instilled discipline; to be on time. She remembers her memorable words: ‘if you bring joy to people, you will be successful! - Her first job interview with the Taj Hotel in New York by a Parsi GM of the hotel Mr

Bapsy Sidhwa was then felicitated for her work and achievements, having made her mark in the field of fine arts; she is a collaborator with Deepa Mehta who has made some award winning movies over the years. She delighted the members with her short but eloquent speech and said she was surprised to note there were so many Zoroastrians in Dubai. It was then time for the WZCC ME Awards. H.E Justin Siberell handed over the WZCCME Trophy to noted businessman Russi Patel for his yeoman achievements in the region and support to WZCC. Copies of the issues are circulated to 21 Chapter Chairs for distribution to

Executive Moves Percy Batliwalla joined in May, 2010 as Head of Asia Pacific Financial Institutions Treasury Sales, of Bank of America Singapore NA. Based in Singapore he will be responsible for growing the firm’s market share in providing treasury services to Asia Pacific-based bank and non-bank financial institutions. Batliwalla previously worked with JP Morgan where he spent six years, most recently as the head of Financial Institutions, Treasury Services Sales Asia Pacific. He is a career banker with a wide breadth of banking experience including roles in corporate banking, corporate finance, structured trade and corporate audit.

R. Gopalakrishnan, Executive Director, Tata Sons Ltd., was the Chief Guest at the WZCC India Chapter AGM on 25th September 2010 enlivened the proceedings and said: “ When Parsis came to India they were all entrepreneurs – trading business men. Hence it is in our genes and we should take advantage of it”. He also reminded that India has many job seekers – what India needs is job creators. WZCC India Chapter held its AGM on 25th September, 2010 at West End Hotel. There were very focused presentations and a very lively interaction with young entrepreneurs. Mr. Gopalakrishnan, a Tata Director, who was the Chief Guest and greatly enlivened the proceedings. Mr. Philli Kharas, the Bombay Chapter President set out the Vision Statement of the Chamber. He enlisted the aims of the Chamber inter alia helping young entrepreneurs to grow their business, identifying members to share their knowledge and expertise by tailor made programmes in tune with members’ needs and effective communication. Mr. Kharas clarified that there was a misconception about WZCC, viz that it is only for entrepreneurs. This needs to be changed. WZCC is for entrepreneurs and professionals.

The Youth Wing led by Chairperson Freyaz Shroff was praised for her commendable leadership. They are an energetic and enthusiastic lot. WZCC International Board of Directors appointed Mr. Minoo Shroff as their Global President in December 2009. Mr. Minoo Mody and Mr. Farrokh Rustomji were appointed as new Directors and Mr. Yazdi Tantra as Technical Director of WZCC International. Mr. Minoo Shroff presented his views on Entrepreneurship. He stated that there is often diffidence among the younger generation of Parsis to become entrepreneurs because of the inherent risks involved. The obvious advantages viz. using one’s creative abilities, greater freedom of action and possible alluring financial rewards is overlooked. He went on to state that “Enterprise is basically a sense of adventure, and a leap of faith”. He likened a successful entrepreneur to a person who has the stamina of a boxer

“Enterprise is basically a sense of adventure, and a leap of faith” and patience of a chess player. Failures are unavoidable but only when you learn what doesn’t work and failures gives you an opportunity to try a new approach. You can never win if you never begin. Mr. Shroff concluded on the note that it is the endeavour of the WZCC to create an enabling environment for young budding entrepreneurs. Mr. Dadi Mistry presented the Delhi Chapter, where the activity was very limited as a result of very few entrepreneurs. However, efforts were being made to revamp the Chapter. Mr. Adi Engineer presented the Pune Chaper where he mentioned that monthly working meetings are held besides the quarterly events. These events included: Business quiz, session on Networking, Mumbai-Pune meet, and Communication workshop.
Mr. Cyrus Bagwadia, the incoming President of the Indian Chamber went on to remove the misconception that our being a small community is an obstacle to developing entrepreneurs. He stated we are small in quantity but can generate higher quality. WZCC is an opportunity to play a positive and constructive role to bring about renaissance of entrepreneurship within our community. He stressed that vision with action is imperative. Our boys and girls have vision, have passion and must be guided to develop a definitive road map of actions to build an enterprise. This year WZCC has arranged for a new programme “Entrepreneur Development”. The object is to spread the culture of entrepreneurship. As one can be trained to become a lawyer or a doctor, one can also be trained to become a successful entrepreneur. WZCC has arranged highly skilled trainers, iconic professionals and successful entrepreneurs to hold several sessions of workshops and personal interactions. Thereafter Chief Guest, Mr. Gopalakrishnan took the stage. He affirmed that entrepreneurship is like a sparkler in Diwali. It is not about owning a business, even someone who starts a new department in their workplace is also an entrepreneur. Entrepreneurship is not about what you do but about what you think. He went on to affirm that entrepreneurship is a state of mind that breaks the equilibrium of what is in ones mind. It is about intuition (following the heart) and not about analysis/rationality and (thinking with the head). Intuition is what you don’t
know that you know, while knowledge is what you know that you know. He then differentiated between passion and dreams. Passion is kinetic energy and dreams are potential energy and an entrepreneur is the one who converts potential energy to kinetic energy. Entrepreneurship is a journey of sinking then rising. Sinking is a part of rising and no one can avoid it. He emphasized “don’t make your job your passion but passion your job. He narrated an amusing fact of being an entrepreneur. “While you are doing it everyone considers you to be stupid but once you are done – you are either a confirmed stupid or a hero” There are always restrictions faced by an entrepreneur, monetary, resource, management etc. If there were no restrictions there would be no entrepreneurs. What’s the point starting a business when everything is available to you ? Mr. Gopalakrishnan reminded everyone that when Parsis came to India they were all entrepreneurs – trading business men. Hence it is in our genes and we should take advantage of it. He reminded us that India has many job seekers – what India needs is job creators. His session ended by his promised surprise where he randomly called three entrepreneurs on stage to share their experience. There was a very interesting round of discussion and live interaction with young entrepreneurs in the audience. On the whole a most stimulating session.

Great Achievements! Mrs. Anu Aga & Dr. Noshir Shroff won the Padma Shri Awards in the year 2010. WZCC congratulates the two luminaries!

The Government of India conferred Anu Aga with the Padma Shri Award for her distinguished service in the field of social work. Anu, after stepping down as Thermax Chairperson in October 2004, has been devoting her time and energy for social causes. She established the Thermax Social Initiative Foundation for leading the community initiatives of the company with a special focus on the education of less privileged children. The Foundation, in a unique partnership with Pune Municipal Corporation and Akanksha, has been successfully managing two government schools in Pune. She has been one of the driving forces behind the Teach for India Foundation. Her work on corporate governance, corporate social responsibility, empowerment of women and above all, an inclusive society with a high emphasis on human rights and communal harmony has been noteworthy.

President Pratibha Patil presented the Padma Shri award to Dr. Noshir Minoo Shroff during a function held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on April 7, 2010. Dr. Noshir M. Shroff is a Medical Director of Shroff Eye Centre located at Daryaganj, New Delhi. He is also a trustee of the hospital which was founded in 1914 by his grandfather Dr S.P. Shroff as one of the first charitable eye hospitals in Northern India. Doctor Shroff is pioneer in the field of intraocular lens implantation surgery and is one of the first Doctors in the country to start Phacoemulsification, in 1992. The Shroff Eye Centre has centers in remote areas in Rajasthan, Haryana and UP and works closely with ORBIS International and MIT, USA (Project Prakash). In 2008-2009 around 1,35,000 patients were treated and around 10,000 surgeries were performed out of which more than 50% were totally free or highly subsidized. 36

A commerce graduate, she holds professional qualifications in CA LLB and is a Fellow Member of The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India.
Umeed is the founder and the CEO of Extentia Information Technology, company involved in software development and consulting. He is also the key executive manager for Extencore Solutions an engineering and design services company which leverages Umeed’s management and operational expertise in an IT-related domain.
Firdosh’s credentials as a professional and academician are impeccable. As a leader in the IT Industry he has provided the vision for multi-year successes and drives towards well defined goals of service, education and research. Holder of over 20 patents in the US and additional worldwide, at a young age, Firdosh Bhesania represents Microsoft Corporation on International Standards Organizations.
Homai started her banking career in 1975 when she joined the Union Bank of India as an Officer in the Central Audit and Inspection Department. She received successive promotions, holding prestigious assignments at the Corporate Office as well as in the field. Homai was the ‘Region of India Director’ on the Board of Directors of the Institute of Internal Auditors (AII), Florida, USA for a term of two years. In 2004, Homai was promoted as the Executive Director of the Oriental Bank of Commerce. She was instrumental in expediting the integration of Erstwhile Global Trust Bank Ltd. with the Oriental Bank of Commerce. In recognition, The Government of India appointed Homai as the Chairperson and Managing Director of The Central Bank of India, one of the largest Nationalized Banks of India. Her most commendable achievement was the overwhelming response the Bank’s Initial Public Offer received in July 2007 which broke all records in the Banking Industry. Homai is the recipient of many prestigious awards, to name a few: • Life Time Achievement Award 2008 • Award for Finance and Banking 2005 • Woman of the Year award 2006 The Zoroastrian Community is known for its honesty and trust worthiness and Homai is a living example.
Umeed is the co-founder of Pinpoint Software which provides software distributors with in-application messaging services and other benefits, he designed the product and serves as the company’s CTO. He is also the co-founder of a novel agricultural venture called Bamboo Grove which grows salads and herbs. Umeed has a passion for teaching and is a visiting lecturer at the prestigious Symbiosis Centre for Management and Human Resources Development in Pune. He is a key member of the Pune WZCC Chapter where he has been instrumental in initiating new activities, drawing in younger membership and creating global alliance through the WZCC net work. In all his activities, professional and personal, Umeed brings the passion, humour and integrity so critical for success. Umeed holds a Master’s Degree in Computer Science from Purdue University USA. Over the years and through the course of several ventures, he has built a reputation for being a man of his word, securing the support of his colleagues, investors, customers and partners, reflecting true Zoroastrian values.
In specifics, he has served on the USB Board and Technical working groups for over 8 years and for 5 years on the Bluetooth Board of Directors and is the Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors for Bluetooth Standards Interest Group. Firdosh has a Master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin with a dual major in Computer Sciences as well as Electrical Engineering. His passion for both hardware and software found him the role of a Program Manager at Microsoft in the Windows Division. His passion for patents and article publication grew out of space as his scope expanded. Firdosh’s role at Microsoft has earned him numerous awards ranging from Gold stars and Chief Technical Officer as well as the annual award for being the most outstanding Technical Individual in Microsoft. He strongly believes that success is a journey and not a destination and life and work should be a combination of passion, achievement and fun. Firdosh comes from India, grew up in Dubai where his parents Kersy and Meher Bhesania live. Firdosh is an American citizen and lives in Seattle USA with his wife Rushna.

The 19th century was unique for the Parsis. We were close to the British and had a tremendous edge. Today it is difficult to have another Tata or Godrej, but it is heartening to note that there are a lot of young achievers. One or two may reach that level but what is heartening is that we will produce 30 - 40 fairly successful entrepreneurs. In the sphere of entrepreneurship, we can justifiably be proud of the fact that we, as a microscopic community, population wise, have on a percentage basis, the highest percentage of successful entrepreneurs than any other community in the world. The Tatas, the Godrejs, the Wadias, and the Pallonjis… just to name a few.” Godrej focuses its efforts in three main areas i.e. Education, Health Care and Environment. Can you tell us something on this? The Godrejs are founder members of the Indian School of Business in Hyderabad. In the field of healthcare, Godrej has built the Godrej Memorial Hospital at Vikroli, where patients are treated irrespective of their religious status. But by far the greatest focus is on the environmental front. We have set up the WWF fund and are heavily involved in the conservation of forests and care for the environment. Recently Sohrabji Godrej Green has been set up. The Centre helps members to become totally environmentally conscious.

Excerpts: You are an adman and advertising is all about glossing over reality. But your presentation spoke of hard facts based on your survey and an action plan. How come? One of the reasons for this is, from the last few years, I’ve become conscious of the fact that whenever members of our community meet, we talk about what a glorious past we’ve had. Though a lot of good things are happening, a lot more can be done. When so many right thinking members of the community have gathered here, as they’re proud to be Zoroastrians and want to do something concrete and positive for the community, I thought this was the right forum to present my blueprint to be dissected, analyzed and finally approved so that we can move ahead. How would you enthuse the youngsters of the community? Thinking about their community is one of the last things on the minds of youngsters today. So I think it’s very positive that there are so many young people participating in the Congress. But I think we are too modern in our outlook. Certain things that are good for the community in the long run are being questioned. You have set certain goals for young entrepreneurs to be reached by the next WZC. Is it feasible? Very much so. In Mumbai alone, when somebody took theinitiative at the India chapter of the WZCC three months ago, we received as many as 40 proposals, and we are looking at the next four years. So I think the goal is achievable.

Excerpts: What are your Concerns about the community? I will say disenchantment among our youth is the biggest problem for the community and the root cause of most other concerns like marrying out of the community and dwindling numbers. Speaking of Parsees in Bombay, there are also problems like lack of proper accommodation and funds for entrepreneurial capital. What are the Solutions: To encourage every Parsee to be part of the community and its leadership we extended voting rights to every registered member who has completed 18 years at the BPP elections held in 2008. That meant there were 40,000 to 50,000 eligible voters. Safeguarding and maintaining Parsee Properties and Anjumans is one of our major focus areas. We have also started distributing bigger and better flats to community members hoping it would be an incentive for youngsters to marry and settled down. Our Fertility Clinic functioning under Dr Anahita Pundole helps Parsis deal with reproductive problems. Since April 2009, BPP has also been distributing a monthly grant of Rs.3,000 for every second child of Parsi parents. In India it is a decent amount of money to support the needs of a growing child and the grant will be given till the child reaches 18. We also have a Venture Capitalist Fund, assisting with the capital requirements of aspiring entrepreneurs in the community. The Fund grants Rs.500,000 to 1,50,000 after due evaluation of the project and we become an equity partner in the enterprise, supporting its growth by way of networking and leads. Our Holiday Program for Youth, allows Parsi youth from all over the world to meet, spend quality time and bond with their fellowmen. We also have a career guidance program, central employment bureau and matrimonial bureau to help youngsters. How does the future look like? The Parsees have contributed overwhelmingly to the social and economic fabric of India and we believe it is only legitimate to accord us minority status and representation in the legislative bodies in the country. This will help us raise our concerns in the appropriate forums and seek to redress them. We need to stay united and speak in a single voice if we want our pressing concerns to be addressed and our younger generation to listen to us.
When a person has so many credential suffixed to his name, he needs no further introduction. Excerpts: You are a role model for the community. How did you get started? I started my career as a salesman for JM Marshall and Company in Mumbai, with a ‘princely’ salary of Rs. 100 in 1959. And since then I’ve grown, both professionally and as a person. And I owe it all to my community that stood by me – the House of TATAs for giving me the first Rs.15 to go to college and do my engineering in VGTI. Before that, I studied for free in a Christian school because my principals in those days thought I’d be a good human being. And when I now look at the certificates they gave me way back in the 1950s, and whatever they’ve said in my certificate – about me having initiative, being motivated etc., are exactly, what I’m today, 60 years ago! Both your identities were displayed on your coat lapels – the Zoroastrian emblem and the Indian national flag. Can you comment on this? I’m an Indian first and everything else afterwards. I’m involved with the Minorities’ Commission and the Planning Commission in Delhi. My concern is what we can give to communities. Apart from your spirit of enterprise, what is it that keeps you going? Somebody helped me to grow in life, especially my community. I don’t have pots of money to give away, but I give whatever advise or contacts I can to others. I’d like to spend more time with my community. Apart from the onerous positions you have as a member of the community, what else do you do? I’m a Corporate Counsellor, representing British, French and Italian companies. I do constructive and marketing work for joint ventures and develop a market for their products in India.

Excerpts: Tell us something about the Zoroastrian community in the UK. There are about 5,000 Zoroastrians living in the UK. The ZTFE Association is stable and strong. We have a young Zoroastrian group which is quite active. Tell us something about the Zarthosty Brothers Hall. In 1999 a mandate was obtained from the Anjuman to buy new premises and sell the old one (75% majority required). In the year 2000 the new premises - a decrepit cinema was bought. It took over 4 years to renovate and in 2005 the work was completed just in time for the 8th World Zoroastrian Congress.

Can you share your views as a Trustee of the Zoroastrian Charity Funds of Hong Kong, Canton, and Macao, which provides unwavering commitment to the community ? The Zoroastrian Association in Hong Kong is perhaps one of the richest in the world and they have generously donated for charitable causes all over the world. Having lived in Hong Kong for years what are your views? Hong Kong is a unique place in terms of safe and high quality living conditions with a cosmopolitan society and an amazing social life second to none. From the business perspective, a remarkable place offering a totally free economy with again opportunities not to be found anywhere else in the world.

It speaks volumes for the Chairperson and the amazing team that carried out their responsibilities with a great deal of commitment. I think the Dubai Congress will probably be lauded as one of the finest Congresses the community has ever had.

Excerpts: 1. What is your opinion about the 9th WZC held in Dubai? The Dubai Congress was very well organized and executed successfully. The topics presented were geared more towards the socio-economic development of our community. This is the first congress that addressed and presented community initiatives in a manner by which continuity and progress can be monitored.
What is your message to the community? Our religion has something to offer so let’s offer it. We are called to refresh the world and there is no greater joy then to see a small change that can come about through one’s involvement in working with others.

This is the first Congress where goals were formulated with the understanding that the Zarathushti community and its leaders would (follow) pursue them. I appreciate the idea and the effort of the organizing body in taking such a bold step. Yes, in my opinion it will help, if properly implemented. 3. In your opinion what are those major strides the community has taken in North America in terms of entrepreneurship, youth empowerment, social responsibility, professional leadership and excellence etc.? The North American Zarathushti population is on the increase while numbers are dwindling in India, Pakistan and Iran. It is time that the World Leadership recognizes the shift and concentrates on the development and welfare of our community worldwide. In North America development and welfare of our community is done through Federation of Zoroastrian Associations in North America (FEZANA), a coordinating body for 27 Zoroastrian Associations plus smaller groups in the United States and Canada.

Excerpts: What are your fears that mankind may face on several issues of ethics and morality, with the rich and western nations being able to manipulate genes to have designer babies in the 21st century? Gene therapy should be used only where there is genetic defect of very rare diseases where a single gene is responsible for the disease, not for common diseases like diabetes, heart disease, hypertension or arthritis, which can be caused by outside forces. There is great danger in using gene therapy for reasons such as cloning that are totally outside medical problems. There is a serious threat that just as dolly the sheep was cloned, one could very easily be cloning human beings. Gene therapy should be used correctly, to treat medical problems only. In wrong hands it can be misused. What are your thoughts on mechanization of medicine? It has distanced the patient from the doctor which is a sad thing. The modern doctor has forgotten to use his eyes, ears and hands. A good doctor continues to use these.

How do you manage to hold on to your Zoroastrian identity in Canada? We’ve been in Toronto since 1968. We manage to keep our identity despite integrating into to mainstream Canadian ethos. I’m closely associated with the Zoroastrian Society of Ontario. We are a 5,000-strong Zoroastrian community there – the largest concentration of Zoroastrian population outside Mumbai. How does the community keep up its dynamism? We celebrate all the festivals together and mark auspicious events. We have facilities for students – Boy Scouts, Girl Guides, religious classes etc. We take care of our seniors. We have a get-together for them every Friday. A car pool picks them up and takes them to the community centre, where we organise yoga, bingo, piano recitals and sumptuous meals for them. Our children have done extremely well. It’s not uncommon to find Zoroastrian CEOs of companies there. Our basic traits of honesty and industry have helped us. Also, we do what typical Indian parent do – lay stress on academics. We have transported our values there. So our children are Indian and Zoroastrian first. We are a highly respected community there. How do women empower other women? Zoroastrian women have contributed tremendously for the last 160 years. Zoroastrians have been pioneers in female education in India, dating back to 1858. Urbanisation, education and generational transfer are three vital areas that have helped the self-development of women. Zoroastrians are the most urbanised group of people. In 1960, about 60% of Zoroastrians in India lived in Mumbai. As of today, 90% of all Zoroastrians live in cities and towns all across the globe. That facilitates growth of women.

Excerpts: There is lot of research going on in the field of medicine, what do you have to say? Research can either be misused or used for the common good. Medicine today has changed from curative to preventive. The future of medicine is going to be immunization and genetics. In another 20 years we may not need antibiotics because most of the diseases will be controlled, like polio and small pox were controlled in the past. Stem cell therapy may be deployed to treat degenerative conditions. What do you have to say about Zoroastrianism?

While in Brazil once for a conference, I went out for lunch with some Brazilians. When I ordered Ox tail sandwiches the other doctors were surprised as they believed I was Hindu and that all Hindus were vegetarians. When I said that I was a Zoroastrian all the doctors started hugging me. The Zoroastrian religion commands the highest respect in Brazil. In fact the word ‘Zarthusht’ in Brazil means ‘honesty’.

Excerpts: You moderated the Doctor’s session very well at the Congress. How did you feel? Health took centre stage at the Congress so I felt happy moderating the session ‘Hands Across the Ocean’. Eminent doctors like Dr.Noshir Wadia, Dr.Rustom Soonawala, Dr.Zenobia Madan, Dr.Anahita Pundole, Dr.Behram Pastakia spoke on various topics, important to our community. Besides the Panel worked towards creating a blue print in the area of health, under the Goals Program. Can you tell us something about the blue print in the area of health? Following suggestions were given by the Doctors Panel. These suggestions will need to be discussed further with the Congress Organizers. These are more India Specific. a) Establish a centre for documentation and data collection of births and deaths b) Start specialized clinics for early diagnosis, management with an aim to prevention of diseases occurring frequently in our community. The Infertility Clinic is already activated at the Jaslok Hospital under the guidance of Dr Anita Pundole. d) Establish Old Age Homes including serviced flats. e) Establish Hospice type wards in pre-existing Hospital Geriatric Units. f ) Offer Medical and Para medical assistance to Senior Citizens and old age pensioners in their houses on the style of Helpage Ltd.

As far as the construction business is concerned in the UAE, anyone with a good knowledge of the job and willing to work hard and invest his money, will succeed. As long as one does not take rash decisions and takes calculated risks, based on market conditions, has a strategy in place, is bound to succeed. You’ve got to know your business and you’ve got to go after it. It’s as simple as that. What has Dubai given you? Dubai has given me life. When I came here, I was young. I had a bit of money. I had my Bachelors of Engineering and MBA from India. But Dubai is where life happened. Over the years my Company, Climate Control has done some landmark projects such as palaces, airports, shopping malls, high rise buildings in Dubai and other Emirates. Some people have started losing faith in Dubai. What do you have to tell them?

The genial actor made the delegates at the 9th World Zoroastrian Congress introspect on their Zoroastrian identity and then made them laugh out their hearts finally breaking into a chorus of ‘We are the world’…. Excerpts: Is it the Parsi sense of humor and the ability to laugh at them that has helped you in your comedy roles? I think you are absolutely right. ‘Entertainment’ is very much a part of the family culture. As a family, we sit together laugh together, we eat and drink together and travel together. On such occasions somebody is always entertaining the crowd to keep the spirit going. It must have been difficult to play Gandhi in Mahatma Vs Gandhi. You shed 22 kilos for it. How did you deal with the demands of playing a legendary character? It was the greatest challenge of my life. I spent a lot of time reading the Mahatma’s philosophy. To play Gandhi, you have to embody the spirit of the man, which is actually impossible. You can only begin to understand the man. If you manage that, you probably can manage to do a decent job of the role. Would your Parsi sense of entrepreneurship make you produce a film? Sure, it will. The first – Alam Ara – was produced by a Parsi, so was Mughal-E-Azam, and Parsis will always stand represented by the greats like Sohrab Modi. How do you feel being part of WZC in Dubai? This is my first experience at a Congress. I think standing united and having a voice is very important. The youngsters should feel proud of the achievements of others. It’s also important to know that cricket and Bollywood aren’t everything. We tend to forget that success is different from fame. There are highly successful people here. But most of them are not famous in the sense of a Bollywood star, so I’m glad youngsters of the community get to see such great achievers and be inspired by them.

How did you take to singing? It wasn’t until I recorded demos of two of my songs sung by professional singers. I then realized that only I could sing my songs best. There was just no soul in the music when others attempted to sing them; for some reason the meaning of the songs were lost through their deliverance. How many cities did you tour prior to your recordings?

I toured 18 cities in the United Kingdom playing to an audience of approximately 25,000 in total. My performance at The Royal Albert Hall in London was described by Time Out as ‘fresh, vibrant, emotive and the audience was hooked from start to finish’. They added that if each future performance racks up to the stature of the one witnessed, the UK surely has a Superstar in the making”. You are basically from India, yet you write mainstream English songs. What do you have to say about that?
You are a celebrity now, but do you consider yourself a true-blue Parsi? Absolutely! I grew up in this gorgeous Parsi colony in Colaba known as Cusrow Baug. As children, we never had a day of boredom. The colony organized so many events for us and I’m still part of a throw ball team! I married four years ago and moved to Malabar Hills, but I keep going to Cusrow Baug.
My music incorporates the three best elements of Indian music into my work; poetic lyrics, simple yet powerful music arrangements and crystal clear vocals.

How did the Great Indian Laughter Challenge happen? I used to do a lot of ad modeling. Then Pankaj Saraswat saw me on a campaign for Globus Clothing and called me for a meeting, and without even auditioning, he asked me if I wanted to do the show. It was a challenge to do a show in Hindi without a proper script or a teleprompter. That’s what made it so spontaneous. Was it the Parsi sense of humor that helped you pull it off? Yes, absolutely! Also, we Parsis always look at the broader picture. That’s what kept me going, though my Hindi wasn’t very good. You are not only a model, but a role model for the youngsters of your community. What’s your message to them? Don’t let fame and money get to your head, because it’s all temporary. Know your values and priorities.

And our students come back and tell us how they have carved successful careers for themselves – as events managers or working with international brands. All this is very gratifying.
