Editor’s Notice Board Welcome to the August 2015 issue of Your Child in Whittlesea!
The new financial year is well underway and businesses are starting to prepare for the lead up to the biggest selling season of the year. Unfortunately, in this climate of constant change, it is sad to see so many businesses close their doors, despite substantial investment of time, energy, finances, and in some cases great personal sacrifice. Although the reasons for this is varied, a common thread seems to be that the first expense that is cut to maintain profits is the marketing budget! Henry Ford, the founder of the Ford Motor Company, is quoted as saying: “Stopping advertising to save money is like stopping your watch to save time”. Another such quote that has been used widely in marketing literature, loosely credited to Steuart Henderson Britt; “Doing business without advertising is like winking at a girl in the dark. You know what you are doing, but nobody else does.” Today we know that advertising is just one aspect of marketing, but regardless of the terminology used, the concept is an important one to master. SCHOOL OF THE MONTH Creativity, Action & Service Students who undertake the rigorous academic International Baccalaureate diploma at The Kilmore International School are becoming increasingly community minded through the school's community service program. At least 50 hours of community service must be undertaken as part of the IB program's CAS program, which encourages students to learn and grow through Creativity, Action and Service activities. Coordinator of the CAS program, Daniel Khoo, believes that community service is the essence of the CAS program, as it gives students the opportunity to become involved in their community. 'Students develop a real commitment through community service,' he said. ‘For example, when our students volunteer at Caladenia Nursing Home or Dianella Village Hostel they're almost
guaranteed to make a few new friends. They are old but they are wise. They can probably teach you a thing or two about life. Students cannot buy this kind of experience and they cannot learn this through their IB books.’ Students also support the Cambodian Kids Foundation, a registered not for profit organisation that works from the grassroots to empower the Khmer people of Cambodia. TKIS has seen students travel to Cambodia and help establish the Soksan International School. The CAS program is only available at schools offering the IB Diploma.
