Dear Supporter,
Year of Listening 2016 – For Better Mental Health in Scotland Breathing Space (Scotland's National Mental Health phone service) is promoting Scotland's 'Year of Listening 2016'. The year will raise awareness that listening, and being listened to, is good for your mental health. Listening is the foundation of good communication. We know that personal/work relationships and friendships where we feel listened to, can have a huge positive impact on our sense of wellbeing and connectedness. This Information Pack provides resources and materials to give you some ideas around promoting listening, listening skills and listening organisations. Whether it's organising a special 'Tea Break' for your friends or work colleagues, developing listening skills through a COSCA Counselling Skills course, or organising a wellbeing stall to raise awareness of listening organisations; there are many opportunities to promote the Year of Listening. You can also find information about our Year of Listening Competition within this pack, where we are looking for a short story, poem or photograph which conveys what listening means to you. The importance of improving the mental health of our communities in creating a fairer, healthier Scotland, is outlined in NHS Health Scotland's publication 'Good Mental Health for All', and supports the Scottish Government’s strategic objective to help people to sustain and improve their mental health. It is only through a collaborative approach to mental health issues, involving everyone from individuals, groups and communities, through to workplaces and organisations, that we can enhance mental wellbeing in Scotland and ensure 'Better Mental Health for All'. Take time to listen today. Keep well, Tony
