ARCH 102 PRESENTING Yeheun Lee

CONCEPT & INSPIRATION As my first step towards making the model, I started on researching bee hive. Different shapes of bee hives are existed in everywhere. Some are round, some are triangular and some are in combination of various shapes altogether.

OTHER DIFFERENT TYPES OF BEE HIVES

REN RI’S GEOMETRIC BEE HIVE

RESCUED BEE HIVE IN THE FARM

I found this bee hive Really interesting how It extends through different direction in dynamic movement and the mood of sharp and sensitive. I refer this picture as my main inspiration for my first iteration model.

SKETCH FOR THE MODEL

st 1 ITERATION

My very first model was build inspired basely by Ren Li’s design and rescued bee hive from the unknown farm. I tried to express the different forms of bee hive by putting wood sticks in various direction. But one thing that I realized was the shapes of bee hives are somewhat consistence in which it is not exactly same but in a same directions or different sizes.

But then I also found some parts to be considered and fixed by advising of the professor. The advising was since it is “Bee Hiving” he expects my model to express how bee’s hiving skills work. Obviously my work just focused on the shapes of the bee hives but not into its functional analysis on how it actually works. So there I found some options I need to change.

For next iteration, I wanted (and I focused)… 1. Functional analysis of bee hive needed

2. The material selection (basswood would be better) 3. Curvy shapes (did not know how to curve the wood)

FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS Bee hive is basically where bees are living and also where queen bee’s resident. They move and live in a colonization society as each bees play a specific role. Then hexagonal cell of honeycomb is exists for a reason. The nectar they get from the flower, is all saved up In the hexagonal cell. Scientists have not yet found out what actually make cells to be hexagonal, but only assumed it to prevent nectars or honey from leaking out of the cell. Hexagonal form helps to keep things safe in there.

st 2 ITERATION

On my second iteration, I tried to change the design concept from my 1st iteration to build more complex model. And not just focusing on to build bee hive model but I also focused on to build design that explains how “bee hive” actually works in real life as bee’s hiving.
