CEDAR CITY MAIN STREET
Despite it being a small town, Cedar City has some of the most unique, affordable and fun places to shop all year round. One of the best places is simply right along Main Street, just off of Center Street. There’s a store for every kind of person. If you’re the type of person that wants nothing less than curling up in a blanket and reading a book, Main Street Books is the perfect place for you. It has books of every kind, old books, new books, fantasy books, nonfiction books, free books, notebooks, whatever you can imagine. It also has clever shirts and cards that are perfect for your bookworm friend (or for yourself, no shame in treating yourself). Overall, a great place to spend some time admiring the wonderful book collection. If you’re more into fashion, there’s a few great places along Main Street. Poser’s place is a popular consignment store with many options of affordable used clothes that somehow still
still look brand new. They have retro and throwback clothes as well as modern, new-age clothes. It’s perfect also for anyone that has way too many clothes that they don’t know what to do with. Poser’s Place allows you to sell or exchange your used clothes to them. This store also has the most funky patches, stickers, cards, and jewelry that will add personality to anything. Farther down on Main Street, you will find a game dedicated to an odd combination of board games, comic books and hand made beads. After that Bulloch Drug, the well-known drugstore of Cedar City. From a working jukebox to a soda fountain, this place makes you feel like you just jumped back into the 50’s. They have some of the city’s best ice cream and candies, my personal favorite being the sea foam chocolate. However I would not recommend if you have sensitive teeth, they can be a bit hard to bite. They also have great small gifts, holiday decorations, cute cards, toiletries, toys, and basically anything else you would need. The drugstore is also a unique place given that it’s connect through the side to a collection of other boutiques that run along mainstreet. Fashion boutiques, home boutiques, baby boutiques. Basically if you’re ever in need of a quick gift, this is the place to go. They have gifts for everyone for every occasion and will even wrap it for free. I could honestly spend hours lookng through all the clothes, noteboks, butter dishes and bars of soap that can be found here but even to step in for a few minutes is fun.
THE FARMER’S MARKET
One of the best kept secrets of Cedar City is the farmer’s market. Every Saturday from 9-12 year round, it’s such a fun place to buy fresh produce and bread as well as homemade juewelry and other unique items. Don’t forget to stop at the Honey Guy and buy honey sticks for only 25 cents or keep an eye out for the man that sells his homegrown sprouts.

Cedar City
CASCADE FALLS By far one of the coolest hikes near Cedar City. Located just on the other side of Navajo Lake, it’s a 45 minute drive from Cedar City that takes you right up through the beautiful Cedar Canyon. The last stretch of the road leading to the trail head is a bit dusty and rocky so make sure your car can handle it. However if you drive slow, probably almost any car could make it. This trail is easy and can be done by anyone. It’s a 1.2 mile round trip that takes you right on the edge of the Markagunt Plateau. The view looking off is beyond gorgeous, including the Claron formation in the rocks as well as miles and miles of lush green pine trees. Keep an eye out for the ponderosa pines along the trail and feel free to get up close to them in order to smell the delicious butterscotch scent they release. At the end of the trail, you come to a beautiful waterfall spilling out from a large whole in the rock. This hike can be accessed almost year round, yet the waterfall is at it’s fullest in the middle of the summer. Wear shoes that can get dirty, given
that the trail is mostly made up of red dirt, which can be quite dusty in the dry seasons and very muddy in the wet seasons. This hike can also be done at night and it a great place to look at the stars. The path is well marked and has plenty of space to walk. However keep in mind if you do go at night when the stars are out, you will most likely miss the beautiful veiw of the valley below. Yet that can just be all the more reason to go again in the day in order to get the full view. If you’re feeling even a bit more adventurous, you can pack some water shoes and a flashlight and even climb up into the hole where the waterfall is coming out of and see how far back you can crawl. This is better done towards the end of the summer when the flow of the water is a little less powerful and you have less chance of slipping or falling or slipping and falling! Whatever you choose to do though, you’re bound to have a great time and don’t forget to take pictures of the beautiful sights and veiws!

THOR’S HIDEOUT/ THOR’S LOOKOUT Gretel Beal
These two trails are both located at the very start of Cedar Canyon, the trailhead starting out as one and splitting into two seperate trails later on in the hike. You can easily find it if you keep an eye out for the shoe tree on the left of the road as soon as you enter the canyon. They both start of going up through the red rocks, right next to the monumental Red Hill of Cedar City. WHen you get to a fork in the trail, you can either take a right and continue up the mountain to Thor’s Lookout or you can take a left and
continue down the mountain to Thor’s Hideout. Both trails meander and zigzag back and forth between the red roks and you either find yourself getting deeping into the red rocks or higher up against the mountain. If you take Thor’s Lookout, make sure to take a picture of yourself sitting on Thor’s thrown, made of branches and rocks! Depending on which trail you take, it ranges between 2.5 to 3.5 miles round trip with a slight bit of elevation gain. Overall, a very beautiful hike that anyone can do.
BLOWHARD TRAIL
This trail is found about halfway between Cedar City and Cedar Breaks. It starts right as you drive into the narrow, cliff-like section of the canyon. This is a bit of a longer trail, 10 miles roundtrip or 5 miles one way. The end is in fact just another trail head but the trail is quite beautiful and covers many unique terrains. You’ll be able to see some beautiful views ranging from the red rocks of Cedar Breaks to the pine covered hills that seem to go on forever. If you go during sheep hearding season,
12
you will likely see plenty of sheep roaming the hills but they’re nothing to be afraid of. You may also see other kinds of wildlife, lizards, snakes, chipmunks and squirrels, maybe even some dear or porcupines if you’re lucky. If you go in the summer, the trail will most likely be scattered with different wildflowers, quite the site to see! It’s also a great place to have a picnic if you’re willing to carry along a blanket and picnic basket with you. Even if you can’t do the whole hike, walking along the trail is still fun!
KOLOB CANYON
Cedar City
Cedar City
Kolob Canyon is a sight to see! With it’s majestic red rock to the scenic trees, one can truly see the beauty of nature. With a trip of 2 miles of pure awe, you can experience this greatness. To get there simply take exit 40 and follow the road under the overpass to the entrance of Kolob. There is an entrance fee but is worth the price as well as the inside of the visitor center to learn more about his beautiful creation. Make sure to look for the big Kolob fingers as they are one of the major features of Kolob. Have fun at this major landmark of Utah!

LAKE ON THE HILL
The name may be a bit decieving due to the fact that it’s not entirely a lake. However, the good times to be had here are even better than you can imagine. In the summer, this place is always bustling with activity. This is a great place to come cool off in the summer when the heat is just too much to handle and the activities here are endless, lasting from sunrise to sunset. You can wake up early and start your day off right with some sunrise yoga in the sand or you can make your way to the edge of the water at sunset and skip rocks until it gets dark. It’s a great place to bring kayaks, paddle boards, canoes, floaties, and many other water devices and enjoy the calm waters at any time. This lake is also packed with fish and whether you’re a beginner or an expert, you’re bound to catch at least one fish if you cast your line out. It’s a great place to have picnics, barbecues, play volleyball or spikeball, get yourself a nice tan or just enjoy swimming in the water. If you’re in the mood to help the community, bring a few trash bags and help pick up any trash you find lying around or caught in the rocks. Whatever you end up doing, this is a great place to bring family, friends, and everyone else!

THUNDERBIRD GARDENS
This may not be what it sounds like but it’s a great place to spend a few hours with friends and family. Thunderbird Gardens is one of the few frisbee disc golf courses here in town and by far the most beautiful. Located on the foothills of the Cedar City mountains, Thunderbird Gardens is made up of large red rock formations and if you time it right, it is covered in wildflowers and lizards running all over the place. This 18 hole course is not your typical disc golf course, with unexpected challenges ranging from steep cliffs and deep ravines to leafy trees and large rocks. If you’re confident in your disc golf skills, the whole course will be a challenging yet fun adventure. For those of us that sometimes forget to let go of the frisbee when we’re supposed to (oops!), it may be better to simply do the first 9 holes. Either way, you’ll find much enjoyment (and some frustration) scrambling up and over the red rocks and trying to spot your disc wherever it landed. If you’re in need of some discs to use, just head over to the BLM where they rent out discs for free to anyone that wants to try it out. If you’re more picky about what you use, you can head over to Walmart’s large disc selection.

“All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players: They have their exits and entrances and one man in his time plays many parts” -Jaques, As You Like It This may be the biggest and most anticipated event to take place in Cedar City. The Shakespeare Festival is one of the biggest Shakespeare Festivals in the country and goes from the middle of summer to the beginning of fall. It is hosted at Southern Utah University and people come from all over to participate or just watch. High schools from all across the state come to compete in all categories ranging from singing to acting to improvising to many other things and the campus of SUU just bustles with activity. Even if you’re not the best actor (or actress in town), you can always come on over to SUU and watch one of the many wonderful Shakesspeare (or other) plays that all the actors and actresses have spent lots of time preparing to perform.

THE SHEEP PARADE
You might be wondering what on earth this is. Well, it shouldn’t be a surprise that it’s exactly what it sounds like, it’s a parade of sheep! This annual tradition is widely anticipated and celebrated by so many of the residents of Cedar City and surrounding towns. It takes place on Cedar City’s mainstreet and the whole community gathers around and crowds the sidewalks to take part and watch this hilarious event. Many sheep owners from all over come and let there sheep freely roam down the streets, (some meandering around calmly while others race to get ahead of the other sheep. A great family friendly activity that you will not want to miss out on!
