INTRODUCTION The project is collaborate with Queensland University of Technology (QUT) to design a library at Howard Smith Wharves, Brisbane. The students from QUT are major in architecture, who will support us redefine the library. Through the 6 weeks teamwork, we will contribute more in terms of crafting and communicating the user experience, and designing a system of services and hardware/software products and QUT side will concerned more with designing the architecture. While we design the library, we have to concern about the flood situation in Brisbane.

INNER BRISBANE DEMOGRAPHICS Inner Brisbane suburbs have a bias towards the 20 to 40 year old age group The vibrancy and proximity to the inner city seems to attract two broad groups of demographics; the wealthy or upwardly mobile professionals and the less wealthy students and part-time or casual workers. The difference is identified in the household income graph below left, where both extreme spectrums of income are highest within the inner Brisbane suburbs. Dwelling tenure within inner Brisbane also shows a large proportion of dwellings are rented ( 52.5%), confirming 20.0% two broad demographics make up of the inner Brisbane region.

PRIMARY RESEARCH

LIBRARY RESEARCH Digital is the trend for the library in the future.

There are four libraries in Brisbane and not many people are using it.

Amazon release kindle and e-book Apple release ipad Most library start scanning book for providing digital book

Citizens are complaining there is no place for discussing loud in library.

Library2.0

Brisbane citizen like to go out and hanging out with friends.

Brisbane city has many places for relaxing such as parks, river side and beaches. People in Brisbane like out door activities.

In weekend, South Bank Parklands in south Brisbane is full of people who come for relaxing.

•Web 2.0 is social, collaborative and interactive. •The ability of “readers “to respond to what they read is a key feature of all Web 2.0 services, from “Comment on this “options, to reader reviews on Amazon to user contributed articles on Wikipedia. •And this invitation to audience participation adds value to content, by adding information and diversity of opinion.

Technology Wikipedia now has well over a million separate articles, all donated through this “architecture of participation”, often by experts in relevant fields. •People write quite extensively through blogs, which are entirely free, with no expectation of royalty payment. Their reward comes from recognition, which is a much more powerful motivator than money. •Other people post their photos online at Flickr, or post reviews of books they have read at Amazon, and so forth.

Blog Knowledge •Blogs mean that the user can have their say immediately. •Blogs provide a platform for everybody •Blog sallow expert opinion to be promulgated without the long delays and tedious rituals of traditional publication methods. •The reward comes from recognition. •The user participates in the creation of metadata.

SCENARIO

Graduate Studio Workshop PolyU & QUT

I am Kevin an documentary photographer live in Brisbane. I was told that the “flowis a sharing library that you can learn from other expert in the city. I fond the app of the library on my phone and register as a member. Input the basic information about who I am, what I am interest in and what I am good at. The library will let me know what activity is suitable for me based on my interest.

FLOW

Graduate Studio Workshop PolyU & QUT

I took lots of documentary photos but I also interest in taking product photo. However, I am not good at it. I search for how to take product photo through the library online platform. I found Jackson, another photographer focus on taking product photos. Jackson posts both pictures and video showing how he takes photos. He is really good! I ask him can we meet at the Library because I want to learn more about it. Through what I share, he knows I am also an photographer and would like to share his expertise with me. We had a great talk. He taught me many details on how to set the light based on his 15 years experience. We had a flounce talk due to face to face sharing and I get the chance to know Jackson well. He is such a good person. Since I registered, I star posting my work with other people. I share my experience, answer their questions and gradually become famous in the City.

In 2011, flood damaged Brisbane. Most of the houses were destroyed near the river. I went out document the city by me camera. People like what I took. After the flood I create an event in the library for people who have the same interest to share their photo about flood. I got support by Brisbane citizen. On the day, the e-wall is not only showing my pictures but also other’s photos. People exchange their photography, stories related to Brisbane flood.

The interactive wall allow me show whatever I’ve share online when I talk to others. People pass by the library saw the activity life video through the e-board and join in with us. After the sharing time, The space change for holding a lecture. I gave a lecture about how to take documentary photos and chat with other citizen. I am glad that I made many friends and other photographer through the activity. The lecture was stored automatically by the video camera for those people cant attend. We decide to make this event every year to remind people the flood in Brisbane.

This course gave me an opportunity also a challenge to communicate with my group members. The QUT students focus on the architecture, and we focus on the concept and interaction in the library. Because Brisbane is far away from us, so when I begin to do the research I felt hard. What we can do only heard from our team members. Luckily, our group member is work hard, he gave us lots of support and we almost contact with him on line every day. For small group to function effectively in a course context, we must attend to both the climate within the group and the process by which accomplish our tasks. So, how their architecture matching our concept, it is important. I want to list the viewpoint about teamwork experience in this project. Openness: we were willing to get to know one another, particularly those with different interests and backgrounds. We try to open new ideas, diverse viewpoints, and the variety of individuals present within the group. We listen to others and elicit the ideas. I admit that sometimes I felt difficult how to balance the need for cohesion within a group with the need for individual expression. Trust and self-disclosure: our group members trust each other enough to share our own ideas and feelings. A sense of mutual trust develops only to the extent that everyone is willing to self-disclose and be honest yet respectful. Trust also grows as group members demonstrate personal accountability for the tasks our each other have been assigned. Support: Group members should support each other as we accomplish our goal. We felt that the group as a whole and help members experiencing difficulties. Respect: as to me, when group members communicate the opinions we should respects others, focusing on “What can we learn?” rather than “Who is to blame?” See constructive feedback in the process section for more details. Although sometime I did not well enough, this project had bring me inspiration how to work well with others.

The library project is really interesting because we got the chance to work with other people who are not study interaction design. During this project, the most difficulty is the communication. Not only because we have to use skype to discuss the project but our major is different so how to talk to different major teammate would be a problem. How to let them know our expertise and deliverable is the starting point. Redefine the concept of the library is not easy for us because how to be on the same page will take lots of time. We talk lots and I thought we are on the same page. What turn out that our idea is the same but the original concept is different. I did not work out this well this time. Through the class, I think I know how to do next time. Write down everything and confirm after the discussion, because the written words is more accurate. We refined the concept and the idea many times trying to fit the concept in a better context and make the library a library not just a social space such as café or park. Not going to the site to observe and do the research by ourselves is so difficult to find the insight which make me realize how important to do the research by ourselves. After the struggling on concept we stand back and start over our idea and it helps us to stronger our idea. It is the most challenge project I have ever done. I lost many times in the progress which let me reflect what I have learn, what method I can use. Not only I reflect, but I also have to explain to my teammates that make me stronger my design method.

In a word, this project brings us a lot of benefits, also get a better focus on what is interaction design.
