Research Phone interview with two doctors who are working in hospital

Purpose Understand the prospective of view from doctors about cancer patient in order to know patient’s cancer journey and defining the target user Finding • Patients get cancer in different stage will act different: Stage one-easy to cure Stage two, three-have the chance to cure Stage four-little chance to cure • Old people, who gets cancer, will tend to give up the medical treatment • Sometimes it’s difficult for patient to feel the support from their friends or relative because the radio therapy will cause them unconscious.

10

• Five Stages of Grief from Elisabeth Kßbler-Ross is sutable for the cancer patient when they are facing the disease. It is easy for some patients to get through to the last stage acceptance easily. However, to most of patients, they will suffering back and forth in the first four stages. Denial and Isolation. At first, we tend to deny the loss has taken place, and may withdraw from our usual social contacts. This stage may last a few moments, or longer. Anger. The grieving person may then be furious at the person who inflicted the hurt (even if she's dead), or at the world, for letting it happen. He may be angry with himself for letting the event take place, even if, realistically, nothing could have stopped it. Bargaining. Now the grieving person may make bargains with God, asking, "If I do this, will you take away the loss?" Depression. The person feels numb, although anger and sadness may remain underneath. Acceptance. This is when the anger, sadness and mourning have tapered off. The person simply accepts the reality of the loss.

Research Reading online cancer patient diary

I found a complete cancer patient diary. He writes the diary during his treatment and also uses photos to document the cancer journey. The patient got the leukemia in his early 20 in stage two and the treatment last for months. Purpose Learning patient emotion journey through their diary How Circle what causes patient’s emotion changing and create insight. Insight • Chatting makes patient happy, even the people are stranger. • Empathy is important to family members toward patient but also to patient toward family members. • Patient will forget the pain while they are doing the activity they like. • When patient doesn’t feel well, they start complaining. •P rofessional people’s comfort is more useful than others.

12

Reading books, papers

Purpose Understand proffesional people's suggestion to deal with cancer patient's emotion Finding What can I do to relieve a person’s anxiety? Acknowledge the anxiety: as with many situations where emotions are involved, acknowledgement of the anxiety or fear shows you noticed and that you care. This may only mean saying something like, ‘you seem worried today’. Touch: touch is a valuable mode of communication but you need to be sure that this is acceptable to the person. Gentle touch communicates the message of sharing the fear. Some people will withdraw from touch-this can be a sign that they need to remain control. Explore the reason for the anxiety: this indicates that you want to help. It may be possible at this stage to provide what the person needs, such as company, help or information. Relaxation and distraction: introducing some relaxation and distraction techniques might lessen anxiety associated with the ongoing circumstances that are likely to persist. •Distraction: company, radio, TV to reduce time spent feeling anxious •Relaxation: music, message, peaceful places ‘Supportive and Palliative Care in Cancer’, Claud Regnard and Margaret Kindlen, 2002

15

Research Interview with psychology professor

Purpose To understand to perspective view from the professional people about how to bring the positive attitude to cancer patient Insight • The most useful people helping the patient on mentally is their close friends but not those people who is taking care of them • Direct support is pressure • Social group is so important for the patient • Personal interrelation will change after he got cancer • Feeling lonely is what most patient feel after they got cancer • There must something wrong for leading the cancer. Document patient’s life can find the wrong life style

Introducing Motivo

Motivo is a plush robot that directly

accompanies cancer patient during their recovery time. Through the platform, it enables the patient to communicate with their family, friends and supporting groups. Whenever people send their care to the patients by their computer, it will store in Motivo for patient to watch whenever they are available. Patients can also show their situation and emotion through Motivo to their friends. If patients or their family, friends have any question, they can post question and those professional people on the platform will answer it for reducing their anxious. Also, professional people are able to provide knowledge to educate them or invite them to join the activities with supporting group. After his surgery, David went back home. His friends went to his home visiting and gave him Motivo to accompany during the recovery time. They input the basic information. Nancy, David’s best friend lives abroad. In the morning when Nancy checked her mail, she got the invitation from Motivo and watch through the information teaching her how to treat the cancer patient. Nancy recorded a video through the computer camera and sent it to David. David felt calm when he recieved Nacy's message and he hug Motivo tight to express his feeling. Radio therapy has been tough on David. It caused David fever, nausea. He hated the therapy and he felt his family didn’t know what he has been going through. Reflection Edward Yen My project start at how to help cancer patient for better communicate with their friends, relative to get sympathy and support during their painful medical therapy in order to get hope and strength to get through it. I narrow down the target group by talking to doctors. Based on the age and the stage, I focus on adult age from 20 to 50, get cancer from stage two or three. However, this is not the only group that is suitable to focus. Young cancer patient and breast cancer patient can be my target group but either it is difficult to get contact with or not easy to communicate with due to my gender. After I do the online research and reading books, I still don’t get what I should focus on or what should I do until I really talk to the patient and supporting group. What they told me give a whole understanding about the cancer patient journey. The previous research that I did is correct but it is only a part to how to give patient positive attitude. In that case, I do not only focus on how to improve cancer patient’s communication but also how to let others know what they are suffering; the knowledge about medical treatment; others experience. This is a big change to my project. Later then, I had an interview with psychology professor teaching in medical school. What she told me is basically what I have learned from supporting group, patient survivors and books, which strengthen my faith about what I have studied. I brought the idea back to the Hope Society of Cancer Care. What I got is positive feedback. The only concern they have is the price and how long I can make it happen. This is a crucial question for me to answer them. Being a design, we found a problem and based on our study, we got a solution which can solve the problem. The difficulty is how we can make it happen. This is the only project I do by myself. I learned from what I have learned and reflect it on my capstone. If I have time to keep doing the project, I would like to make it happen and bring it back to cancer patient to ease their cancer treatment journey. 28
