We Philadelphia Site Planning for Sustainable Housing BSc Year 3, Sem 1 (Sep 2021 - Jan 2022)

“We create our place. We share our stories. We design our future. We, Philadelphia.” This is my first housing project which really sparked my interest. To respond to the contemporary housing problem, the project focused on current social issues, namely, housing for refugees. I used my knowledge of hard materials, in terms of textures and function. For example, materials with a rough texture can stop people, control the movement and act as a threshold. Placing seating

between two different spaces (private and shared private) creates a niche social space and defines the space as a boundary. It was a great opportunity to think about the detail design in a residential setting from a small scale to larger scale. The project taught me how to graphically and professionally lay out the document, how to effectively visualise ideas, and how to best utilise the built form to define private and public spaces.

‘We Philadelphia’ is a co-housing project for refugees. 01. VISION: 1. Connecting to the community •Introducing a 'local buddy' system in a co-housing setting (UIA, 2019) •Introducing a 'self-management' system to promote residents' participation (Startblok, 2022) •Designing walk-up-height buildings to ecreate a connection between the ground and upper floors (Sim, 2019)

2. Diversity of housing and open spaces •Providing different sizes and typologies of buildings to support various activities •Providing adaptable spaces to support a bottom-up approach •Providing different gradients of outdoor spaces for social interaction •Connecting the outdoor space to the indoor space

3. Climate resilience •Improving the River Don area with redeveloped social spaces •Generating spaces to accommodate soft landscaping and apply SuDS scheme •Providing a sustainable transport network (cycle lane/street) to reduce car use

6

Mindmap : Strategy for the Refugees

02. DESIGN PROCESS [Design principle] Edges and Spaces : Degree of Enclosure Building blocks

*Numbers represent the height of the builidings.

a. Enclosure on Three + Semi-enclosure

Spaces

The outbuilding divides the space into smaller fractals.

Making houses layout spread will increase access to river, creating little street activities.

Building lines

1. Enclosure on two

1) Open courtyard with a view to the outside 2) Accessible 3 Easy movement (courtyard ~ street) 4) Loose thresholds can be added

b. Enclosure on Three + Outbuilding

The entrances near the bus stops will make the site more accissible.

2. Enclosure on three

1) Focus 2) More restricted views 3) Permeable edges can be added

3. Enclosure on four

c. Enclosure on Four + Semi-enclosure

d. Enclosure on Three + Landmarks

The layout will encourage street activities.

1) Privacy 2) The use of corridors for access 3) Building height matters

Cohesive building forms can create a sense of identity in the community.

4. Semi-enclosure

1) Movement focused 2) Potential of secondary street activities

5. Outbuilding

A communal building in the middle will act well as a main hub.

Site edge increased by sub-dividing original site into smaller blocks (Sim, 2019).

1) Double courtyard (private and semi-public) 2) Space variation

Emotion Through Viaduct Green Infrastructure and Ecological Masterplanning BSc Year 3, Sem 1 (Sep 2021 - Jan 2022) This project allowed me to do experiment in a range of design processes. From abstract mapping to developing patterns, the project taught me that the design approach can be artistic, as well as abstract. The idea was that emotional experiences can vary in different spatial structures such as vegetation, topography, and materials. Inspired by the nature walk in Grindleford, I captured the feeling of the space with sketches from where I walked and interpreted them with using emotional mapping along the journey. The spatial pattern was developed through the openness of the vegetation

structure and the movement of the space. The future design shows an emotional connection in each character area. Moreover, as the project focused on ecological approaches, a variety of habitat interventions were created.

Forms of Memory Ecological Processes, Design and Management BSc Year 3, Sem 2 (Feb 2022 - June 2022)

My final project focuses on the sound in landscape. A space is a sequence with people, plants and the winds. These ideas of memory and sound aim to of cumulative memories. A memory encapsualtes the full experience: what

encourage people to take take notice of how powerful the memory is, cre-

you saw, heard or felt, and together those memories make up the collective ating and evoking our memories. The sound memory will enhance different story. The project is the development of an understanding of space in terms experiences in physical spaces and cast shapes of its own in our minds. of sound. The sound memory is embedded into the space, insofar as it can cut across time through memory and it can trigger feelings and emotions that are part of the fabric of our relationship not only with place, but also

01. DESIGN APPROACH_SOUND VISUALISATION

Video experiment

The project focuses on sound experiences in terms of memory. Inspired by tree ring patterns, which show similar forms to circular sound waves, the video explores different textures of sound.

02. STRATEGY

01. Existing sound mapping

03. Sound experiences in proposed design

02. Design strategy

The strategy for designing spaces is summarised with three key words: to contain, to augment and to dampen. Based on the existing sound map, the strategies were applied to enhance the sound experiences across the space.

Urban Illustrations _ 100 Summer Drawing Project June 2021 ~ September 2021

Here’s the full story and journey of my 100 summer drawings!

This section shows a selection of urban illustrations that I did during the summer break. The purpose of the ‘100 Summer Drawing Project’ was to enhance my drawing skills, to challenge myself and develop an eye for viewing the world. A number of sketchbook and digital drawings trained me to develop my own style. A drawing journey ended up with 100 drawings in 9 cities and 59 places. To know more about my drawings and process, please visit my art account. @yw12_art
