6 Benefits to Studying Abroad

Few academic experiences are as unique as studying abroad. As society becomes increasingly global, young men and women can benefit greatly from experiencing other cultures. The cultural savvy needed to traverse new terrains and interact with various people can give graduates an edge. Higher education experts around the world say that studying abroad helps students become part of the global hub. But the following are seven additional perks to seeing the world in the name of education. 1. Make new friends. Studying abroad introduces students to people in different countries, helping to build friendships as well as an international professional network.

2. See the world. Students who study abroad have the opportunity to see different parts of the world they may not see otherwise. Studying abroad also enables students to travel unencumbered by family or friends who might want to follow their own itineraries. 3. Change your perceptions. It’s easy to get caught up in our own perceptions about other cultures or peoples. But travel is a great way to challenge those perceptions and gain a broader perspective on the world. 4. Develop greater language skills. One of the major draws of studying abroad is the opportunity to study a foreign language out in the world rather than inside a classroom. Constant language practice will

enable you to hone your skills that much quicker. The ability to speak multiple languages fluently can give job applicants a greater edge on their competition. 5. Have more employment opportunities. Limiting yourself to one country for jobs may be a mistake. By studying abroad, you may create career opportunities overseas that may never have materialized had you studied at home. International experience is an asset that many employers value in prospective employees. In addition, overseas pay rates may be more competitive when you factor in the conversion rate. 6. Gain independence. Studying abroad may be your first real opportunity to be on your own.

This can help you get over any apprehension about traveling alone and also foster greater selfconfidence. You may find that traveling alone brings out an independent streak you never knew about.

How occupational therapy can help chronic pain sufferers Millions of people suffer from acute or chronic pain every year, and the effects of that pain extend far and wide. While pain sufferers understandably focus their attention on treating their conditions, it’s important for all people to recognize the nonphysical burdens pain places on people as well. Estimates vary regarding the overall financial burden of chronic pain on healthcare systems, but numerous studies have suggested the overall costs are in the neighborhood of half a billion dollars every year. A recent report from the Institute of Medicine estimated that pain costs American society as much as $635 billion every year, a figure that includes both the costs associated with treating pain and the money forfeited to lost productivity. The costs of chronic pain are substantial in Canada as well.

If you are: • 55-70 years old • Non smoker • Healthy and taking no medication

Though the population of Canada is just 35 million (compared to nearly 320 million in the United States), a 2010 report estimated the costs associated with chronic pain and lost productivity and sick days in Canada to be around $37 billion annually. Chronic pain can be uncomfortable and costly, but there are ways to manage the effects of chronic pain and lead an active, productive life. Occupational therapy is one way for chronic pain sufferers to combat their conditions and improve their quality of life. What is occupational therapy? According to the American Occupational Therapy Association, occupational therapists and their assistants utilize everyday activities to help chronic pain sufferers participate

in the things they want to do and need to do, including work. What can occupational therapists do? Chronic pain sufferers rely on occupational therapists in various ways. Occupational therapists may identify the cause of their patients’ pain, suggesting alternatives to activities or behaviors that aggravate that pain. Such identification may include evaluations of patients’ homes and work environments. Occupational therapists also teach methods for decreasing the frequency and duration of painful episodes. This may include adapting environments that tend to trigger pain. For example, if an office environment is identified as the cause of the pain or a primary trigger, occupation therapists can recommend adjustments and equipment to make that environment less conducive to pain. Occupational therapists also teach clients how to use the equipment so their pain decreases while they perform necessary tasks, such as those associated with their jobs. Many occupational therapists work in conjunction with other healthcare professionals who are treating their

clients. This cooperation can help to determine the ideal course of treatment and may help patients hesitant to treat their conditions with medication find other avenues to overcome their chronic pain. Chronic pain is a potentially formidable foe that affects millions of people across the globe. Chronic pain sufferers can learn more about the role occupational therapists can play in combating their conditions by visiting www.aota.org.

If not vaccines, what causes autism? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that autism spectrum disorder is the fastestgrowing developmental disability, affecting about 1 percent of the world’s population, including 3.5 million Americans. The National Epidemiologic Database for the Study of Autism in Canada, which has been monitoring the prevalence of ASD in various areas of Canada since 2003, says one in every 94 children in Canada is autistic. The prevalence of autism and the mystery behind it has left families, doctors and researchers perplexed as they continue to look for possible causes for of the condition. Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition that involves deficits in social communication and interactions

across multiple settings and situations. Some people with autism may have trouble communicating, while others may recede from social situations. Other signs can include repetitive behaviors or extreme focus in one concentration of activity. ASD develops — and presents symptoms — differently from person to person. There is no single cause of ASD, but medical professionals generally accept that it is linked to abnormalities in the brain structure and its function. The Autism Society indicates that scans of brains in children with autism are different in shape and structure than brain scans of children who do not have the disorder. Vaccines are not linked to autism, despite misinformation that has spread in recent years. That potential link between vaccines and

autism was discredited as far back as 1998. “Over the last two decades, extensive research has asked whether there is any link between childhood vaccinations and autism,” said Rob Ring, the chief science officer at Autism Speaks. “The results of this research are clear: Vaccines do not cause autism. We urge that all children be fully vaccinated.” Researchers at the Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center have found autism likely starts well before the emergence of any noticeable symptoms, and the following factors may play a role in the development of ASD. • Pesticides: Some studies have found that pesticides may interfere with genes involved in the central nervous system, according to experts at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. These chemicals may adversely affect people predisposed to autism. According to a study published in June 2014 in Environmental Health Perspectives, a research team from the University of California, Davis, tracked 1,043 families in California, where there’s a $38 billion agricultural industry.

One-third of the pregnant mothers in the study lived within a mile of farms that used pesticides linked to impaired development. Proximity to pesticides was associated with a 60 percent increased risk for ASD. • Genetic vulnerability: The Autism Society states ASD tends to occur more frequently among individuals with certain medical conditions, including fragile X syndrome, tuberous sclerosis, congenital rubella syndrome and untreated phenylketonuria, or PKU. Ingesting harmful substances during pregnancy also has been linked to increased risk of autism for the child. The National Institutes of Health found families with one child who has autism have about a one in 20 chance of having a second child with the disorder.
