Singles Review: Decadence and Tunnel Vision by Doggo

by Kenneth Fury

The Texas rippers are back. Doggo, an instrumental band that is a pure pleasure on every end have dropped two new singles.

Since last year when they dropped “OG GOD”, they’ve been on my must-watch list. Frankly, they are some of my favorite players for all their respective instruments. The three piece are fiercely tight, aggressive and technical. On the two new singles, “Decadence” and “Tunnel Vision”, the band do what they do best without feeling stale.

Though I have never seen them live (come to Canada?), you can physically anticipate the energy of the sets they play. Tunnel Vision is one of the best singles I have heard this year and demonstrate everything the band does well.

Elliot Page, the guitarist, is at his finest. Pushing melodic hardcore, midwest emo and a love for progression metal licks, Page continues to put himself on the map. His guitar playing is a treat for everyone- those who also play guitar and those who enjoy good playing.

Neither song stagnates, constantly moving. The rhythm section continue to prove why they’re a deadly duo. Jonathan Flores and Paul Del Campo push Page’s guitar playing into breakdowns that hardcore bands should be jealous of. Each band member would be the star of any other band, making it seemingly unfair that the three are together.

As someone who plays bass and spends half the listening time appreciating the drums, the duo show that they are not to be forgotten about and Decadence takes a melodic hardcore shine and though instrumental, communicates the hope and catharsis that the genre is founded on. The production is tight and clean, but not overdone or glossy, just the way I like it.

This band is a treat for those who love math rock, metal, hardcore and great musicianship. You can find the new singles and their previous work on all major streaming services.
