Hugh's Monthly Pick
from Yer Scene Vol. 2
by yerscene
So yet again, my pick is a little older and not really that underground but fuck it, I'm gonna talk about No Gods, No Managers by Choking Victim. This album fucking rips (I know I say that too much but it will never not be accurate). And look, before you motherfuckers start saying that ska sucks, fuck you. All three waves are tight as fuck and I look forward to the fourth I swear to god. This album is only half ska though, so I digress. For those of you who don't know, Choking Victim was a hard (ska) core band from New York, who broke up the day of recording this very record. It's politically charged, anarchist shitpunk and it's so fucking good. I mean these lyrics are incredible, the hooks are incredible, the Michael Parenti samples are brilliant. It's just a great punk rock record. I mean how can you argue with "I'm a loser, I am Satan, I an Jesus Christ, I'm me, there are no winners in this fucked reality". That's the punkest lyric ever. This entire album is punk as fuck. It's catchy, hard hitting, and surprisingly heavy (the song "Fuck America" dabbles in death metal, "Praise the Sinner" has black metal elements). This is all while also being a ska record. Yeah. Ska is cool. This album fucking rules. Fuck you.
