La b e l Sp o t l ig h t : Dis p o s a b l e Ame r ic a b y Hu g h Sc h mid t Disposable America is a record/ tape label out of Allston, MA that specializes in local lo-fi and indie rock releases. Boston indie rock has always had a quirky, off-kilter edge, and this label showcases that sound better than most. Their first release was back in 2015, and have been steadily putting out records since. Their releases always look fantastic and are packaged with all sorts of bizarre trinkets and wrappings that make each purchase different (One of the tapes I ordered came with baseball cards, buttons, and was wrapped in Russian newspaper). My personal favorite releases from this label are:

Charm School by Half Sour Venus in Gemini by Dump Him Cave Needles by Cave Needles What Have You Done To My Water by Beverly Tender

Spl it Rail Rec o r ds by Edward Rojas Split Rail Records is a student run record label in Boone, North Carolina. Since it began in 2005, Split Rail has gained recognition throughout America from the New York Times and Billboard Magazine. As part of the Appalachian State University music program, Split Rail has been able to work as part of the curriculum for the school and gives students the opportunity to get their foot in to the music business and understand how it works. Furthermore, Split Rail will record a free album for one band a year. From having fund raisers to weekly shows, Split Rail Records appears to be the real deal. Except it?s not. All the bands who have signed make basically no money because Split Rail takes it all. Although technically there is a breakeven deal, which means the bands supposedly get paid after the company makes a certain amount of money from album/ merch sales, the company does so little to assist the bands that this never actually happens. The contract is horrible and the whole organization is poorly run. And because students work there for credits, this means that the record company doesn?t actually have to pay the students. Indie folk stars Rainbow Kitten Surprise had to pay a few thousand dollars to get out of the contract they were trapped in. Members of bands signed to Split Rail often complain about the lack of work and advertisement the company does for them. Bands like Electric Jelly Funk and Arson Daily are currently signed to Split Rail. If you are a musician in the area I strongly urge you not to sign. It?s a trap.

Band Int er view by hugh schmidt I first found Cooler ?s music the way that I find a lot of music, which is searching through piles of promo CDs at radio stations. The sticker on the cover of their 2016 EP ?Phantom Phuzz? described it as something that would sit ?next to MTV2?s iconic 2002 rotation? and compared it to Weezer and Pity Sex, so I figured it was worth a shot. I had no idea that that EP would stay in my CD player for the next month. My roommate can confirm that their track ?Metal Moths? was stuck in my head for the entirety of November. This EP stuck with me to the point that I messaged the band to tell them how great I thought it was. This eventually led to me asking to interview them preceding the release of their new record ?Buried? which comes out on January 12th. With input from Alley and Adam, Nick was kind enough to answer my questions: 1. Basic qu est ion , bu t h ow did Cooler st ar t ? How did you m eet ? Cooler started as a quintet in the winter of 2014... We all (with the exception of Alley) grew up in the same small town about half an hour south of Buffalo and have played in bands together for years... We were all brought together by our love of guitar-driven music with sincere, emotional lyrics. We also wanted to utilize male/female harmonies and fuzz pedals, all within the context of catchy, pop songwriting. Everything we've put out since has been a reflection of those guidelines. 2. So you all ar e f r om Bu f f alo, New Yor k , w h ich , w h ile it 's h ad it s f air sh ar e of gr eat ban ds, isn't a place t h at people im m ediat ely t h in k of w h en t h ey t h in k of DIY m u sic. Wh at 's t h e m u sic scen e lik e t h er e, an d h ow does t h e scen e/ t h e ban ds in it af f ect t h e w ay you m ak e m u sic? Buffalo's scene is small, but it is full of talent. Every couple of months, a new DIY place will open up and inevitably, someone lame will complain and get it shut down for a noise violation or something... Sure, it's fun playing big, fancy venues, but there's something romantic about playing a weird DIY space packed full of people. That being said, I think Buffalonians are used to being the underdogs, and that scrappy mentality makes its way into the music that comes out of here. There are so many great songwriters in Buffalo, while there is certainly support for one another, it also pushes everyone else to be at their best. Plus, the long, slushy winters give us plenty of time to sit inside and get introspective, which is great for writing songs.

3. Is you r m u sic m or e of a collabor at ive ef f or t or is t h er e a pr im ar y son gw r it er in t h e gr ou p? Wh o's spillin g t h eir em ot ion al gu t s ou t in you r son gs? Our songwriting process is very collaborative, especially now that we're a three-piece. Without that fourth member, it forces the three of us to look at composing our songs from multiple perspectives. These days, we have acoustic and electric practices and we're often swapping instruments to flesh out new ideas. Usually, one of us will pitch an instrumental idea and we'll jam on it until we get it to a point that we're all happy with it. We're all pretty sensitive people, so we're all kind of always spilling our guts all over the place... "Buried" was a full-band effort to write, but we knew that Alley would truly bring the lyrics to life. When it comes down to it, we just try to do what's best for the song. 4. So w it h " Bu r ied" com in g ou t on t h e 12t h , is t h er e an yt h in g t h at you w an t people t o k eep in m in d w h en list en in g? An y con t ext you r list en er s sh ou ld k n ow abou t ? The song "Buried" was written for the introvert in us all. It's about being anxious about day-to-day obligations like work, errands, and social situations. There's a lot of pressure to be successful and active and creative, and that can put your mind in a bad place. Sometimes pulling the blinds, locking the doors, curling up in bed, and chilling as hard as possible with your significant other is the thing you need to get your head straight. I think those feelings of anxiousness carry over intoBuried(the EP) as a whole too. The EP definitely touches on themes of anxiety, relationships, and mental health.

5. Do you f eel " Bu r ied" is a n at u r al evolu t ion of you r sou n d, or did you h ave a con cept or n ew sou n d in m in d w h en w r it in g it ? "Buried" is on the swimmier side of our songwriting, and that sound was purposeful. With that said, I think "Buried" is a great example of an archetypal Cooler song. We used lots of reverb and chorus effects to give the song a hazy feeling, and Alley's delivery gives the song a sense of longing. Most of all, we want our songs to get stuck in peoples' heads. So "Buried" is super pop oriented, clocking in at under three minutes with a simple structure and a memorable melody. We also have to give a shout-out to our engineer Anthony Del Plato, who did a great job helping us bring our ideas to life. 6. Wh at 's u p n ext f or Cooler ? An y t ou r s plan n ed or f u t u r e r ecor ds in t h e w or k s?

2018 is going to be full of songwriting and show-playing for us. We're already hard at work on our next release. We're going to try to play out of town (and in town) as much as possible over the next year, and maybe even do some live sessions.

MONTHLY PI CKS

Ke n n e t h ' s Pi c k Fr i ends by why not friends. by Why Not is an album I?ll be costing off of through winter. The math rock and emo influences that are wonderfully used to create what can only be described as are...mathy bops? These songs, in all ways, grab your attention and keep it. The tasteful playing from the three piece is a treat. Their playing feels tight enough that you can tell these guys practice together a lot but how much they love the material shines right through. There is an energy in punk shows that is indescribable (but we all know it) that?s near impossible to put to record yet, Why Not have done it. Listening to this album feels like seeing friends you genuinely like at a venue you love and the vibes are alright. The production feels organic while evidently having some time, effort and most importantly, care into it. To those who liked Routine Days after I recommended them this is right up your ally. To those who wanted something a little mathier, this is your dog. I love this shit and the drummer is sweetheart. Check it out, show them some love.

mel l ow gol d by beck My monthly favorite album also happens to be an all-time favorite album I?ve been revisiting: Mellow Gold by Beck. Everyone knows the opening track ?Loser?from the radio but not everyone knows that in Mellow Gold?s case, the opening track is the most misleading. The rest of the album reminds me of a methed-up Paul Simon release with a strange 90s hip-hop edge. Tracks like ?Sweet Sunshine?, ?Soul Suckin?Jerk?and ?Beercan?lean towards the hip-hop side of the album while most of the others along with ?Fuckin? With My Head?, ?Pay No Mind?and ?Truckdrivin Neighbors Downstairs?emulate the albums strange, ambient anti-folk element. This album is fantastic and I would one hundred percent recommend listening to it.

T e a m Pi c k Not hi ng f eel s nat ur al by pr i es t s Priests?Nothing Feels Natural was released in January 2017, an early year pick that could too easily be forgotten by the time year end lists begin to be assembled. This album should not be overlooked when taking stock of the impressive year in music that was 2017 - with this abrasive, commanding noise rock album Priests staked their claim as one of the most important bands working. Direct tracks provide a cathartic assessment of the social and political climates that prove to be exhausting and bewildering day after day. On the track Pink White House, frontwoman Katie Greer explores the shallow nature of commercialized revolution. However, songs such as Snuff and title track Nothing Feels Natural does not diminish the desire for some form of real change, even if one may be plagued by doubts of this real progress even existing. Listening to Nothing Feels Natural a year after its release, the criticisms of power structures, commercialism, and self-serving empathy feel all the more potent. I wonder if I had heard this album at the start of 2017 if the word ?exhausted?would have been called to mind so often. The idea of constant work for no consequence and no real change feels exhausting and defeating, but proves that this is an album that should not be forgotten. A cathartic balm for living in surreal, disaffected times, reminding the listener that they are not alone in these anxieties.

Hu g h ' s Pi c k my f ami l y woul d l ov e t hi s by boy bl under My Family Would Love This is the debut release from MA/CT indie rock band Boy Blunder. They?re a new band (they released their first single back in July) but its members have been playing in bands for years (Ice Cream Orphan, Roseate, Two Headed Girl, etc). This new release of theirs is everything good about New England indie rock. It?s hooky, slightly strange, and has a heaviness that a lot of indie bands don?t have right now. Sam?s vocals range from calmly sung lines on tracks like ?God?to Mark Arm-esque screams on ?A Little Birdy Told Me You?re a Rat Bastard?. There?s an interesting dynamic between the 8 string and the 6 string guitars in this band, which results in extremely catchy and melodic guitar leads. Reminiscent of old Boston bands like Letters to Cleo, Volcano Suns, and The Cavedogs but with a modern edge, this is indie rock in true New England form. This record is fantastic and easily one of my favorite EP?s of 2017.

Z a c h ' s Pi c k I nt er mi s s i on EP by No Vacat i on Lately I?ve been vibing to math-rock with an indie/chill progression. My pick for January is the perfect example of what I?m trying to describe here.No Vacation,a vibrant indie/dream pop/math pop and not to mention all-women trio based out of San Francisco, CA, has really struck a chord with a global digital audience through this release. (You?re going to have to forgive me for the trite ?struck a chord?phrase -- suck a butt.) The Intermission EP, released in November, opens up on ?Yam Yam?-- a relaxing, bass-driven track. This is an elegantly simple song, but what I love most about it is probably the drums. Starting from the mix, all the way down to what is a slightly unpredictable beat, I?m looped into that involuntary head-bobbing that?s not easily elicited. Another thing I truly love about this EP is the surf-vibes. There?s something about the guitar work in the intro of ?You?re Not With Me Anymore?that can nearly reduce me to tears. I want to lay down and dissociate because of it...but?.in a good way? I think? The song is beautiful -- that?s my point. You can pick this record up by visiting https://novacationgrrl.bandcamp.com/album/intermission -- on No Vacation?s bandcamp, you can also subscribe to their music for a low price, and pick up limited tape/vinyl copies of the EP...something I?d highly recommend!
