GENERAL OVERVIEW
As a not-for-profit organization, YES Montreal (Youth Employment Services) enriches the community by providing Englishlanguage support services to help Quebecers find employment and start businesses. Job Search Program
FOR YOUTH AGED 16 TO 35. This program includes daytime and evening workshops, individual career counselling, career testing services, paid internship programs, French courses, cover letter and résumé translation, a mentoring program, job postings, networking opportunities, a resource library, and free phone and computer access.
Entrepreneurship Program
OPEN TO ALL AGES. The Entrepreneurship Program offers daytime and evening workshops, one-on-one business coaching, legal and accounting clinics, sales and branding consultations as well as a mentoring program. YES has a comprehensive resource guide entitled: “The Montreal Entrepreneur’s Guidebook”, which is available for purchase at the centre. YES also hosts an annual entrepreneurship conference each spring, the largest English-language event of its kind in Quebec.
Artists’ Program
OPEN TO ARTISTS OF ALL AGES AND DISCIPLINES. YES’ Artists’ Program offers a range of services to help artists develop entrepreneurial skills, strategies and tools to build sustainable and economically viable careers. Services include one-on-one coaching with a dedicated artists’ coach, thematic workshops by industry professionals, consultations with career counsellors, business coaches, as well as legal, accounting, sales and branding professionals as required. Program resources include our Business Skills for Creative Souls: The Montreal Artist’s Handbook, a useful reference book for artists from all disciplines (available for purchase at the YES centre) and our one-of-a-kind Business Skills for Creative Souls Artists’ Conference, a day of inspiration, information and networking (held annually in spring). Registration Information
BUSINESS HOURS: Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM-5:00 PM WORKSHOP HOURS: Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM-9:00 PM. The YES centre is closed on all statutory holidays. Our daytime workshops are available on a drop-in basis or by pre-registration. Workshops are limited to 30 participants and fill up quickly; pre-registration is strongly recommended. Please call us for details or to register. Pre-registration is mandatory for all evening workshops. Late arrivals for workshops will not be admitted as they are disruptive to the group. Where there is a fee for a workshop you may register in person, by mail, by fax or by phone. Payments can be made using cash, cheque or credit card. For registration information, please call 514-878-9788. Workshop payments of $15 or less are non-transferable and non-refundable. Cancellations for the Start Your Own Business series and French courses must be received two business days before the start of the FIRST workshop in the series. Please note: As wait lists can be quite long, if you are unable to keep an appointment at YES, you must advise us at least one business day in advance. If you are more than 15 minutes late, you will be required to reschedule. We reserve the right to deny future services. Artist and Entrepreneurship Services: For a one-time $20 file activation fee you will have unlimited access to specialized entrepreneurship and artists’ services including coaching, legal clinics and accounting clinics. You will be exempt from this fee if you are receiving social assistance at the time of your appointment. To cancel or reschedule an appointment, you must provide at least one business day’s notice to ensure that other clients have the opportunity to be served. JOB SEARCH PROGRAM
YES
The YES Job Search Program is designed for youth aged 16-35 who are looking to jump-start their careers, find employment or return to school. Offering over 260 workshops annually, professional employment and career counsellors facilitate and guide participants in strategic job search activities and provide individual counselling. In addition to scheduled appointments, YES offers 15 minute drop-in sessions, Monday to Friday from 11:00 AM12:00 PM, with a Job Search Counsellor. YES offers an intensive French course for job seekers, translation services for résumés and cover letters, free access to our computer lab with Internet, fax machine, photocopier and courtesy telephone. YES also has an extensive job search library with all the essential resource materials for everyone’s employment needs. Do you want your résumé to reach the top of the decision maker’s desk? Learn the techniques of effective and strategic résumé and cover letter writing. Participants are encouraged to bring a copy of their current résumé to the workshop. Have your résumé and cover letter professionally translated from English to French. Submit your electronic document and your translation will be ready within seven business days.

This two-part workshop encompasses the different types of interviewing styles and prepares participants with self-marketing techniques by identifying their skills and linking relevant experiences through a series of exercises. Participants will view a DVD covering the do’s and don’ts of interviews and learn methods to successfully prepare for up-coming interviews. Part II: Mock Interviews 1:30 PM-4:00 PM Participants will have the opportunity to practice in a seven-minute one-onone, recorded mock interview. How satisfied are you with your current job? What are your long- and short-term priorities for work and career? How might you change the meaning of work in your life? If you decided to change jobs, how might you accomplish this? Career Testing Services at YES offer two standardized tests to help you understand yourself, your motivations, strengths and potential areas for growth. Together with a career advisor you will examine your interests, personality preferences and clarify your career objectives. Career testing is offered on an individual basis. Thursday mornings, 10:00 AM-12:00 PM: Aug 20, Sept 17, Oct 22, Nov 19 Part I: Transferable Skills This workshop will look at the definition of competencies and will give participants a breakdown of its different components including knowledge, abilities, skills, motives, and aptitudes. The workshop will define what transferable skills are, how to identify them, and link them to job-related skills by using a transferable skills scale. Participants will be involved in different activities where they will identify their personality traits, knowledge-base and hidden skills. Participants will examine various communication tools through a series of individual and group exercises.

French for Job Seekers Cost: $65 Pre-registration is required. This is a four-week course, held twice a week. YES reserves the right to cancel a course if there are fewer than ten participants.
JOB SEARCH PROGRAM This intensive, four-week course is specifically designed for students with a basic knowledge of the French language. Emphasis will be placed on improving conversational skills in a business context while focusing on grammar and vocabulary. Participants will also have an opportunity to work on their cover letter and to participate in mock interviews. Career Mentorship
In this program, career mentees and mentors collaboratively work towards achieving specific career goals that are established at the start of the relationship. Offering support, encouragement, and career guidance, mentoring under the Career Mentorship Program requires an investment of time, the ability to be open and honest, and a commitment to personal development. Mentees and mentors under the YES Career Mentorship Program must commit to meeting in person at least once a month for a period of six months (Please see page 19 for details).
Internship Program
Through job training, this paid internship program’s objective is to provide selected candidates with the opportunity to learn practical skills, help ensure successful integration into the job market, and gain meaningful work experiences within their field. Interested candidates must come to the centre to fill out an application form and attach a letter of intent along with their résumé. ENTREPRENEURSHIP PROGRAM The Montreal Entrepreneur’s Guidebook, 3rd Edition This Guidebook provides entrepreneurs with a detailed roadmap outlining the steps involved in starting a business. It is used by several Montreal area educational institutions, including Concordia and McGill University.
Part 1, the “Entrepreneurial Roadmap”, takes you through eight steps that will help you reach your dream, featuring expert advice, insight, checklists, references, real-life entrepreneurial examples, self-evaluation, finding business opportunities, conducting effective market research, writing winning business plans, finding the money to finance your venture and helpful hints on running a successful venture. These articles are reprinted from almost 100 sources. Part 2, the “Entrepreneurial Resource Guide”, is a comprehensive listing of local non-profit, community and government organizations that provide valuable advice and assistance on everything from market research to business planning to financing. The third edition contains over 20 new listings, and includes updated information on existing listings. You can obtain the Guidebook in person on location at Youth Employment Services for $40 (taxes included).

In partnership with YES, the UIBE promotes entrepreneurship to the Englishspeaking Black Community and provides support, information and training in entrepreneurship to potential and existing entrepreneurs. A one-of-akind outreach initiative, the UIBE is dedicated to creating and supporting entrepreneurs in the Black Community. The Artists’ Program is open to artists of all ages and artistic disciplines, and offers a range of services to help artists develop the tools, skills and strategies to turn their artistic passion into an economically viable profession. To best meet the diverse and particular needs of our artist clients, this program works closely with our Entrepreneurship and Job Search departments, which offer many workshops and other services pertinent to artists. Learn the tricks of the trade from industry professionals and maximize the web’s potential to advance your artistic practice. Topics of discussion will include: optimizing a web site’s look and content, keeping it simple and easy to update, using existing technologies such as blogs, mass mailings and social media to reach your public, selling your work on-line, search engine optimization, linking strategies, monitoring web traffic, and others. In order to produce, promote and distribute their work, artists, like all entrepreneurs, need the recognition of their peers, as well as the capital to finance their endeavours and support themselves along the way. This workshop for theatre, multi-disciplinary and circus artists offers an overview of the funding programs offered by the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and the Canada Council for the Arts, including deadlines, eligibility criteria, selection processes, and grant-writing tips to help you turn out grant applications that are as strong and outstanding as your work.
Understanding copyright laws can be challenging, but in order to protect their work from misuse, artists must arm themselves with knowledge. This workshop for visual artists and artisans will provide discipline-specific information relating to the Copyright Act and its application, including: authorship, infringement, fair dealing, moral rights, contracts, and other related topics and resources, such as SODRAC’s rights management services.

This workshop for musicians and those in the music field deals with the ins and outs of the recording industry. Join our invited speakers, seasoned industry professionals and artists, for an informative evening of discussion that will include: self-producing, approaching record labels and distributors, promoting your work, finding representation, contracts and other legalities to consider, touring, financing, and music industry resources/service organizations. There’s no such thing as bad publicity, but even bad publicity takes work. In order to grow their careers, artists need to attract, cultivate and build an ongoing relationship with their public and the media. This requires know-how and a few essential tools such as an up-to-date media and contact list, press kits, and knowing where, when and how to promote their events for maximum visibility. This workshop will help artists learn how to get the word out easily, effectively and with little or no expense.
This workshop for budding documentary filmmakers offers an overview of the documentary filmmaking process, from idea to finished product and beyond. Get the scoop from industry insider Ezra Soiferman, an experienced doc filmmaker (Man Of Grease, Tree Weeks) and director of the film/TV networking organization, Montreal Film Group, who will share tips on: finding unique ideas, planning your film, building your production team, shooting, editing, networking, and getting your film seen (TV, web, festivals, screenings). A not-to-be missed evening for story-tellers with a passion for the craft and business of doc. Artists, like all autonomous workers and business people, need good financial management skills to avoid unpleasant surprises come tax time. Each year, YES teams-up with La Fondation du maire de Montréal pour la jeunesse to offer grants to support young start-up entrepreneurs. Candidates must meet all eligibility requirements. It is mandatory that you meet with a business coach before submitting a contest application. Start preparing today and give yourself the best chance of receiving a grant of up to $7,500 for your business. This annual contest offers artist-entrepreneurs and arts collectives the opportunity to hone their grant-writing skills and to win grant money toward the realization, promotion and presentation of an artistic project. The three finalists will be announced and awarded their prizes at our 10th Annual Business Skills for Creative Souls Artists’ Conference taking place in June 2010. MENTORSHIP PROGRAM
The YES Mentorship Program aims to facilitate the transfer of skills and wisdom from an experienced professional (a mentor) to a less-experienced individual (a mentee). A mentor acts as a guide, a role model and as an advisor to a mentee, who is willing to learn from their mentor’s experiences in order to develop their career or business. The development of a successful mentoring relationship requires an investment of time, the ability to be open and honest, and a commitment to personal development and learning. Our new “Pay It Forward” Mentorship Program assists the transition from school to work or self-employment through the transferring of knowledge from mentor to mentee.

The YES Career Mentorship Program facilitates youth career development and employment in Quebec. Mentees are matched with experienced professionals who can provide support, guidance and encouragement. Career mentees work towards achieving specific career goals that they establish at the start of the relationship. The YES Entrepreneurship Mentorship Program aims to increase the success rate of start-up entrepreneurs by providing them access to the knowledge and expertise they need to make good business decisions on their own. Entrepreneurs are matched with experienced business people who can provide support, guidance and encouragement. The entrepreneurship mentees work with their mentors at the onset of the relationship, whereby they establish the specific goals they are going to achieve. The YES Artist Mentorship Program supports the career development of emerging artists by matching them with established artists, cultural administrators, and/or business professionals so that they may benefit from their expertise, knowledge and networks. The goal is to empower artists in the early stages of their careers by helping them optimize their efforts and activities for maximum benefit and long-term growth. Are you an experienced professional with a sense of commitment and desire to give back to the community? Do you want to share your knowledge and expertise?
