F
ILIPINOS, w h er ever t h ey m ay be, alw ays st r ive t o be ah ead of t h e cu r ve. In t h is issu e, w e h ave f eat u r ed Pin oy pr ides Dan n y Favor an d Cyn t h ia Bar ker , w h o ar e t r ailblazer s in Br it ish Polit ics.
Favor, is the first ever Filipino Councillor winning his 3rd term for East Grinstead town while Barker is the first ever Filipina Councillor and is re-elected for a 2nd term in Hertsmere. Both Favor and Barker, went through a hard-fought campaign, and despite their party being unpopular lately because of the Brexit issue, the two managed to win the elections. It?s a well-deserved win as both have proven a good track record as public servants. Talking about winning, another Filipino pride, Apollo Exconde, wins Incredible Customer Service Award in the Croydon Stars Staff Awards for this year. He is a Filipino Radiographer at Croydon Health Services NHS whose cheerfulness, patience, and kindness would ease the patients?anxieties as they go through the daunting MRI scans.
We also have a Filipino Ice Cream Parlour winning in the Top Asian Cuisines Awards. Mamason?s Dirty Ice Cream competed in one of the 22 awards categories. The ice cream parlour received the Best Sweet Treats Awards during the Golden Chopstick Awards at the London Marriott Hotel Last April 29.

As a Filipino living abroad, I feel extremely proud of our kababayans who do so well in what they do wherever they are in the world. In our special feature on the first Filipinos to arrive in the UK, we have the story of Alfonso Pimentil, a Filipino sailor. who arrived in Liverpool in from the Philippines in the early 20th century. He had married a Yorkshire woman and built a family in Liverpool. His grandson Steve, a retired accountant originally from Liverpool but now resides in Scotland, has been researching his Filipino roots. Lastly, I would like to say that Filipinos here and around the globe are lovely and talented people. In this issue, you will read about the ingenuity of our kababayans in Banaue showcasing their wooden scooters and the beautiful men and women from the Filipino community who joined and celebrated Flores de Mayo.

The GCA is a prestigious award aimed at recognising the significant contribution of Asian cuisine in the United Kingdom?s culinary scene.
Mamasons competed in one of the 22 award categories and was one of around nine Filipino restaurants and pop-ups that were shortlisted in the different GCA categories. Winners in categories such as the Best Sweet Treat award were voted for by members of the public over a six-week period. ?A massive thank you to everyone who voted for us and to the whole team at the Golden Chopsticks Awards for putting on such a special night

celebrating the brilliant array of Asian cuisine in the UK. We are truly honoured and we could not have done it without all your relentless support,? said Mamasons in an Instagram post immediately after the award was conferred. ?We had a goal, and that goal was to spread the love and flavours the islands of the Philippines have to offer.? Mamasons opened its first branch in London two years ago at Kentish Town in Camden and has since garnered a steady following. Mamasons opened its second branch in China Town in 2018 following an invitation from Shaftesbury, one of the UK?s culinary king makers. ?We are truly proud of Mamasons? achievement,? said Ambassador Antonio M. Lagdameo. ?Since it first opened its doors to the public, Mamasons has been one of the biggest success stories in sharing the story of Philippine culture one scoop at a time.?

Lord Justice Underhill examined the Home Office?s usual tactic of justifying a refusal by reference to the existence and option of social care i.e. that the state will provide. This contention is particularly frustrating as anyone living in the real world knows that what the state can provide often falls short of the care an elderly parent requires simply because it fails to account for the emotional need of someone vulnerable and possibly at the end of their life.

Yes Philippines was there to witness the children and grandchildren of the members of the different associations joining the procession along with the adults led by the Mass presider, Fr Arnel Tadeo. The St Dominic?s Priory Choir provided the music during the procession and the Mass which followed. Upon reaching the Church, the children then made a floral offering to the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception with 3-year-old, Bethany-Rose, tasked with placing the crown on our Lady. The reading and responsorial psalms were delivered by 11-year-old, Joel, while Sienna, 10 years old, did the bidding prayers. After the Mass, the group transferred to the Church Hall for refreshments where all the children who participated were given gifts of appreciation.

NC m em ber s in Heat h r ow , Un it ed Kin gdom , h ost ed an even t t o sh ar e f ait h an d f ood, last 21st Apr il 2019, a Su n day, in Su n bu r y u pon Th am es.
Many guests of all ages were introduced to the INC in a Bible presentation. After, guests were treated to a social event themed Burgers & Bubble Tea. Different types of booths competed for the best burger, best bubble tea, best side dish, and best booth. Each booth was run voluntarily by INC members as they prepared different types of inventive burgers and bubble teas? fresh and free! During the social, youth performers sang INC original music numbers. Visitors commented that they enjoyed the tasty, ?gourmet? burgers and refreshing bubble teas which were all nicely presented. The INC members were so excited and happy to prepare the food for the guests but moreso to share their faith. More events like this to come. Watch out for your invite.
