Modern Lofts 1B Studio Professor : Donald McKay Type : Multi-housing Site : St. Claire Ave & Westmount Ave Toronto, Ontario

3

Modern Loft is a medium density apartment located off of St.Clair avenue in Toronto. Using the empty lots left from other developments, the building was designed to accommodate the future growth and population of the street. In hopes to act as a medium between the school and the church, a library was placed to provide a space for children and families to find relief from the congestion of the city. Many green spaces were also created within the communal glass boxes in order to reestablish a relation to the surrounding natural environment.

At night ,the building will luminate through the glass boxes, acting as a lantern to the dark street, creating a safer and approachable environment for the site. As the building becomes used at night, the street as well develops a new night life that allows public places in the neighborhood to be used timelessly.

Artist Residence 1A Design Studio Professor : Donald McKay Type: Writer’s Retreat Housing Site : Cambridge , Ontario

13

A writer needs a space to be quiet and inspiring at the same time. Located in a forest valley outside of downtown Cambridge, the river provides an acoustical barrier from the unpleasant noises from the roads near by. The retreat is separated into three spaces by programs around an exterior courtyard. This unique threshold from the courtyard into the rooms allows the artist to enter individual rooms refreshed, and most importantly, into the studio clear minded.

14

The studio was placed to have the main view of the stream. A deck was added in order to have direct access to the exterior into the forest that can not be experienced in the exterior courtyard.

Oasis

1B Environmental Design Professor : Terri Boake Type: Resting Shelter Site : Hulule Island, Maldives

17

Oasis focuses on the environmental aspect of design. The structure adapts to the climate, and needs of it’s surroundings purely by it’s design rather than additional artificial heating or cooling. Main purpose of the design was to create a place where people could rest and find comfort from the heat while still enjoying the views of the beach. Passive cooling techniques and use of materials within the site allow low use of energy.

18

A open floor plan allows a cross ventilation .The cool air enters the space and travels through carrying the interior heat outside. The heat also travels up and exits through the double layered
