The consent agenda is approved as one item, no matter how many items are listed. This month’s consent agenda contains a resolution opposing North Carolina Senate Bills. A brief description of these bills follows:

403 Medicaid Work Requirements — to provide for the expedient implementation of Medicaid work requirements related to Section 2.4 of S.L. 2023-7 “If there is indication that work requirements as a condition of participation in the Medicaid program may be authorized by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the Department of Health and Human Ser-

preserving pictures and memorabilia topic of First Thursday History series

The First Thursday History Series continued April 3 at the Jamestown Public Library with a talk by Mary Faye Bodenheimer of Arts by Alexander. Bodenheimer shared information about her business, including how it started, and details on preserving pictures and memorabilia through framing.

“Just like people, each item is different and has different needs on how it is restored and saved,” Bodenheimer said. “It is not a one-size-fits-all. For example, oil paintings are easier to restore than prints, and today’s acid-free mats keep items from deteriorating as quickly.”

Caring for pictures, however, requires more than careful framing.

“You need to keep them away from natural and fluorescent lighting,” Bodenheimer said. “On a trip to Italy we were in a dark room and the lights were only turned on for a few minutes to view the paintings, then switched off again. They were very cautious with their artwork.”

Castle McCulloch ownership, foreclosure on hold – again

cab1hp@gmail.com

The future ownership of event center Castle McCulloch is still in question after the Guilford County Clerk of Superior Court denied the foreclosure request on April 2. According to N.C. Business Court Opinions, rcdlaw.net, “Regarding the remaining ‘sues,’ the Court also determined that a jury trial was not warranted because the issues raised were either irrelevant, immaterial, or had already been decided by settlement or on summary judgment.”

Background

On Dec. 29, 2023, substitute trustee Jonathan W. Anderson, initiated a special proceeding to foreclose on the property. On Dec. 19, 2024, Judge Louis Bledsoe III ordered the foreclosure sale for the Castle McCulloch property at 3925 Kivett Dr. in Jamestown to settle a financial dispute after years of lawsuits and countersuits were filed against the former Southeastern Eye Center of Greensboro. Southeastern was sold to Carolina Eye Associates earlier this year.

Southeastern became a 25-percent owner of

Bodenheimer acquired much of her beginning knowledge about framing from her mother, Eva Alexander. When she was a baby, her father abandoned the family leaving her mother to raise Bodenheimer and two older siblings on her own. Her mother went to work for a printing company where items were often framed. This background led to today’s present company, Arts by Alexander, located at 701 Greensboro Road, High Point. help carry the family business forward.

“It has been interesting all these years to see what people bring in for framing,” Bodenheimer said. “I think the most unusual was a woman who came in with tears in her eyes wanting us to frame her cat’s kidney stones. We did it and, if I recall, included a picture of her cat.

“It is exciting to see what people treasure. One Christmas

for the property located at 5125 R1 Atwater Dr. (Parcel #155994) that is west of Pinetuck Road. A copy of the proposed amendment is on file in the Town Clerk’s office for inspection by all interested citizens.

The Planning Board will discuss the annexation on April 14 at 6 p.m. in the Civic Center at Town Hall, 301 East Main Street. The public is invited to attend. There will also be a request for approval of the Settlement agreement between the Town of Jamestown and the Jamestown Youth League.

The Council will meet at 6 p.m. April 15 in the Civic Center at Town Hall. There will be two public comment times. The meeting may be viewed live and after the meeting at www.youtube. com/c/TownofJamestownNC. Click on “live.”

JBA hosts Speed Dating — business style

Members of the Jamestown Business Association and other guests were treated to a different type of event during the group’s monthly networking meeting April 3. Participants paired off two-by-two for what resembled Speed Dating — only business style.

“I noticed that everyone, myself included, tended to sit with those they knew at our meetings,” said JBA President Victoria Jones. “I wanted a way to mix people up so they could get to know others.”

Jones had supplied each pair with a list of possible questions they could use to get their discussions started. She noted that no one seemed to refer to the questions; rather the con-

versations just flowed. “Everyone seemed to enjoy this activity,” said Jones, the owner of Under Pressure Massage and Bodywork. “In fact we got so caught up in our talks that at one point we got carried away and ran over the 10-minute time limit before moving on to the next person. But that was a good thing.

McNeil announced as head coach for Ragsdale Men’s Basketball

We are incredibly excited to welcome Michael McNeil back to Ragsdale High School as our new Head Men’s Basketball

Ragsdale High School

Athletics is thrilled to announce the hiring of Michael McNeil as its new Head Men’s Basketball Coach. A proud alumnus of the class of 1994, Coach McNeil returns to his alma mater with 25 years of basketball coaching experience at the middle and high school levels, including the last 21 years spent coaching in Charlotte. During his time as a student at Ragsdale, McNeil was a standout athlete,

earning three varsity letters in both football and basketball. He received All-Conference honors in both sports as a junior and senior and was recognized for his achievements by being voted into the North Carolina High School Academic and Athletic Hall of Fame in his senior year. His athletic success continued at the collegiate level, where he received an athletic scholarship from Mars Hill University and graduated in 1999.

Coach McNeil brings a wealth of successful coaching experience to the Ragsdale program. He spent six years as an assistant and JV Head Coach at Vance High School. Following that, he served as Head Coach at Hopewell High School for four years, where he was voted Coach of the Year and led the team to several playoff runs. Most recently, he spent the last five seasons as Head Coach at Mallard Creek High School, where his teams

is tHE BiBLE FULL oF MistAkEs?

Dear Pastor sid:

Please settle an argument that my sister and I have. She does not go to church because she believes that the Bible is full of errors. If it has errors then why read it or believe in it? I don’t think like her. Is she correct? — LH from High Point

Hi LH from High Point, I hope this short answer helps, but let me tell you: The Bible is not full of errors. In fact, the Bible is the book of truth and every word can be trusted. God is perfect, and so the Word of God is perfect as well. How do we know? Every science fact mentioned is without error, every geographical point, or historical fact is without errors, and even Biblical archaeology has supported the fact that the Bible is true in all aspects. The Bible is truly perfect, and perfectly true. There are no inconsistencies in the Bible either. It is man’s only perfect source.

WHo WAs CAiN’s WiFE?

Dear Pastor sid, I have attended church for many years and have always wondered: Who was Cain’s wife? Please help me understand this. — From Bob H

Hi Bob H, Thank you for asking this question. In Genesis chapters 2-5 we have the beginning of society and the population of the earth started with two people. A man and woman were created and told to have children and populate the earth. So Adam and Eve had many children but their first two were Cain and Abel. We know that Cain killed his own brother and was put into exile by God as punishment. So what happened to Cain? He left his family and was forced to go elsewhere. Cain would have found a wife and this wife would have had to been his own sister. No other choice is possible. Keep in mind, though, that during that time period people had perfect air to breathe, pure water to drink, and they lived in a perfect environment. They also live much longer as a result. So intermarriage with close relatives did not have the problems like it has today.

Ask The Pastor is written by Pastor Dr. Sid Stewart, from the Hoover’s Grove Wesleyan Church, 5399 Jackson Creek Rd, Denton. Pastor Sid’s teaching motto is: Making the Complex Simple. Castle McCulloch in 2004 after paying owner Richard Harris $2.1 million. Southeastern principals were to use the castle for a loan for medical equipment.

JDPW is a trust created for the Southeastern Eye Center-Castle McCulloch arrangement. Harris’ brother, Douglas, was the attorney involved in the transaction and a trustee.

ITE Management LLC took out a $2.145 million loan from the bank in 2004 under the direction of Southeastern Eye Center. The loan, described in court documents as the “CM Note,” was supposed to be paid by Oct. 2, 2009, but was extended four times before its final deadline of July 5, 2012. Because the loan was secured by a deed of trust, the bank held a legal claim to Castle McCulloch if the borrowers defaulted on the loan – which they did.

consistently finished in the top half of the conference and were a mainstay in the state playoffs.

Coach McNeil expressed his enthusiasm about returning to Ragsdale, stating his plan to replicate the same success at his alma mater. His coaching philosophy is deeply rooted in his own experiences as a student-athlete. He believes in using the lessons learned through playing sports as a blueprint to teach kids how to overcome adversity and be successful in life.

Deborah Jones, Athletic Director states that the hiring of Coach McNeil marks an exciting new chapter for Ragsdale Athletics. His 25 years of coaching experience, including significant

However, in March 2013, Douglas Harris, used his authority as trustee of JDPW to transfer the CM Note, the loan documents and the property’s collateral back to Richard Harris, making Richard both the creditor and the debtor. Despite this transfer, JDPW remained responsible for repaying the loan.

Historic Castle McCulloch LLC, the owner of the Castle McCulloch Property, opposed the foreclosure and argued that the 2012 payment to the bank on behalf of JDPW paid off, rather than purchased, the note. HCM also argued the 10-year statute of limitations for collection had run out. The court disagreed.

On March 5 of this year, Historic Castle McCulloch LLC, Castle McCulloch Inc. and Richard Harris filed an application in the N.C. Business Court to stay

One of the most challenging items to frame was a canvas that was painted on both sides, each with equal value. The solution was to encase it in glass so both sides could be viewed.

If people tell the framers what they want and it cannot be done, the staff is quick to let them know.

“We can often suggest a better way,” Bodenheimer said.

She noted that framing has changed through the years. Acid-free mats that come in an array of colors and Water White glass that filters out sunlight make items more long lasting.

success at multiple high schools in the Charlotte area with playoff appearances and Coach of the Year honors, speaks volumes about his ability to build a winning program. His commitment to using basketball as a tool to teach valuable life lessons aligns perfectly with our mission. We are confident that his leadership will have a profound and positive impact on our student-athletes.

Ragsdale Athletics is confident that Coach McNeil’s extensive experience, his deep connection to the school, and his proven track record of success will be invaluable in leading the men’s basketball program.

and also requested an expedited ruling relating to the foreclosure sale of Castle McCulloch.

A stay is a suspension of a case or a suspension of a particular proceeding within a case while an appeal is pending.

The statutory bond required to stay any effort by JDPW Trust and others to proceed with a foreclosure sale for Castle McCulloch was set at $514,781.40.

The Guilford County Clerk of Superior Court denied the foreclosure request on April 2. Parties in favor of the foreclosure appealed. Judge A. Todd Brown ordered any foreclosure plans to be placed “on the ground that the receiver did not hold a valid debt.”

“You are not going to make a killing off limited edition prints,” Bodenheimer acknowledged.

“Unless you are a serious art collector.”

Art is a perpetual thing and Arts by Alexander tries to frame something so well it can go through multiple generations.

Not only does Arts by Alexander frame items for others, it has framed a collection of Santas that Bodenheimer has painted over the past 20 years.

“I am running out of things to have him do,” she said smiling.

Besides framing, Bodenheimer has learned many life lessons through the years.

“My mother worked until she was 98 and I am heading that way,” she said. “You do what you have to do and do what you want to do.”

Spring Bliss in a Bowl: Roasted Carrot

Here's A Tip

As we happily say goodbye to winter’s chill and welcome the warmth of spring, nothing complements the season quite like a bowl of Roasted Carrot and Coconut Soup. Whether enjoyed as a hearty lunch, a starter for your Easter table or a light dinner, this recipe captures the essence of freshness and comfort.

Fresh carrots are key. Unlike frozen, they bring caramelized sweetness and robust flavor to every spoonful. Roasting them until golden intensifies their natural sugars, infusing the soup with a depth that watery frozen carrots can’t match.

The secret to any truly exceptional soup lies in building layers of flavor. Begin by caramelizing onions to a golden perfection, then add smashed garlic and freshly grated ginger. These aromatic ingredients not only elevate the soup’s fragrance, but also enhance its complexity. Remember, the key is to season generously and let each ingredient shine.

Once the vegetables are tender and fragrant, blend them into a velvety smooth consistency. Coconut milk adds luxurious, dairy-free creaminess that complements the earthy sweetness of roasted carrots. A touch of apple cider vinegar and optional maple syrup achieve a perfect balance of subtle tanginess and deep sweetness, harmonizing the flavors. Garnish with green onions and fresh herbs like parsley or cilantro for a vibrant, visually appealing finish that enhances the soup’s deliciousness. You could garnish with green peas for color and extra protein.

Perfect for busy schedules, this soup can be prepared ahead of time and reheated gently to preserve its flavors. Whether enjoyed

steaming hot or refreshingly chilled on warmer days, it’s a versatile addition to any meal plan.

RoAstED CARRot AND CoCoNUt soUP

Yield: 4 servings

total time: 50 minutes

2 pounds carrots, peeled and chopped into 1-inch pieces

3 tablespoons olive oil, divided kosher salt and pepper, to taste

1 sweet onion, chopped

4 garlic cloves, smashed

1 heaping tablespoon fresh ginger, grated or finely minced

3 cups vegetable or chicken stock

1 (14 ounce) can coconut milk, divided

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

1 teaspoon maple syrup (optional)

2 green onions, thinly sliced, for topping Parsley or cilantro for garnish (optional)

Preheat the oven to 425 F. Place the car-

rots on a baking sheet and toss with 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Roast for 25 minutes, until golden and delicious. While the carrots are roasting, heat the remaining olive oil in a stockpot set over medium-high heat. Add the onions and saute for 5 minutes, until softened. Lower the heat to medium-low, add garlic and ginger with a pinch of salt and pepper. Cook for 5-6 minutes, until fragrant.

Once the carrots are done, add them (along with any oil from the roasting sheet) to the pot. Pour in the stock and bring to a boil. Reduce it to a simmer and cook, uncovered, for 10 minutes.

Remove from heat and cool for a few minutes. Either use an immersion (stick) blender to blend or carefully transfer the mixture to a blender. Puree until smooth (use caution with hot liquids).

Return the soup to the pot and place over low heat. Stir in most of the coconut milk (reserve some for garnish), the apple cider vinegar and maple syrup, if using. Heat through. Taste and adjust seasoning with as needed.

Serve hot, warm or cold, garnished with a drizzle of reserved coconut milk, sliced green onions and chopped parsley or cilantro.

With its nourishing blend of flavors and health benefits, Roasted Carrot and Coconut Soup bridges the gap between seasons with every spoonful, a gentle reminder that good food can be both simple and sublime.

• Got fresh herbs? Try this drying tip/car freshener in one: Lay herbs flat on newspaper in your car. Keep windows closed, and after a nice sunny day, you’ll have a delicious-smelling car and dried herbs to store for later dishes.

• “Raised beds are a nice addition to our garden area, but it seems the gophers liked them too. To combat the problem of the beds being attacked from below, we lined them with chicken wire this time, and everything is going really well so far.” — J.J. in Illinois

• When starting plants from seeds, you can use an old cupcake pan. Use paper liners or coffee filters to line the cups. Add soil and seeds. Water as necessary. When the seedlings are ready for replanting, simply lift out and break the bottom seal of the paper or filter, and plant as-is in the ground. It’s east to transport them in the pan, and no leaks.

• Two things your garden should have: a rain barrel and a compost pile. Both are relatively easy to set up, and pay big dividends. You can get a book at your local library on how to set up a compost pile. Some cities will give away rain barrels or hold workshops. Find out today!

• “To keep track of what is planted in your garden, you use garden markers. Make your own by writing the type of flower, plant or herb on a brick or large flat stone. Use permanent marker and cover with clear acrylic if you want it to last longer. You can even use both sides for different seasonal items.” — Z.M. in Georgia
