Super gigantic buildings are rare, and are always considered as contradicting the urban context. However, gigantic structure can also be intepreted enables a variety of stories to take place inside, and the strong shape will be monumental enough to become a 'beacon' in the future environmen vertical city. In this design, instead of pulling two highrises on both side of the road, we are trying to solve the current urban problems with a radical s events.

Due to the decreasing land capacity, future city complex will pay more attention to the value of vertical design. The power of merging can be an incentive for the better working and living ecology.

Considering the needs of both types of residents, we create the intersection in two ways. In horizonal, there are little boxes for the locals to visit and for the refugees to work in; in vertical, there is an ambiguous grey space between private living and public working. The transmition of space is intepreted as the third identity.

The lift of the upper collective living part enables an intermediate level between the private living and the public workshops.
The intermediate level becomes a new garden for the whole neighborhood to share the sunlight, thus creates more dialogues between the residents. 33
FUTURE SILK ROAD Urban design project in Hongkou district, Shanghai 18 Week Group work in Tongji University, Shanghai, 2014 Instructor: Songhua Dai 34
35
Fragments of the City Hongkou creek used to be a vital part for commercial trade in the early 20th century. Small ships with cargos used to fill the waterway, bringing prosperity to the area. Besides, the whole district is was famous for its theatres. The site was the origin of Shanghai’s film industry. Today’s Hongkou creek is no longer a prosperous river path. Although passengers are able to catch a view of skyscrapers at the other side of the CBD area in Pudong district. It is no longer a specific destination for both tourists and residents. Preserved buildings are now ratty dwellings for people with a lower income, and the cultural destinations scatter in the site. Therefore, we are considering revitalizing the importance of Hongkou creek to stimulate the cultural and economic development of the district.

Because of the rising high tide level and the settlement of the ground surface, the design considers the situation of the small harbor under different circumstances. The underground restaurant is considered as part of the flood wall. When the tide level reaches a certain height, the restaurant will be closed. In normal situations, people can gather in the restaurant and the space outside.

The skywalk is a perfect choice to get rid of the poor traffic in rainy days.
We can now enjoy different activities at the square here, and the busy crowd has a shorcut from the habor to the office.
Lonely Planet says that this old art deco building is now revitalized as a shopping mall. Let’s walk in and have a look.
