The Big Draw - body, sun, sand and sea
September 2009
Yewande Okuleye and Dr Fergus Doherty from the School of Biomedical Sciences conceptualised
and delivered this workshop. The objective was to design an informal learning experience to engage a broad range of ages and backgrounds in Bioscience. An interdiciplinary presentation explained the art, science, history and cultural implications of the sun; topics covered ranged from Ra the Egyptian Sun God, Vitamin D , sun damage and skin cancer. The multi-slide presention projected onto six screens created a rich visual immersive landscape. This provided a backdrop for Dr Fergus Doherty to highlight protein molecular mutations. Participants were treated to a stereoscopic projection of protein molecules as special glasses allowed participants to view the molecules in 3 dimension. Interpretation Participants had the opportunity to use a range of traditonal drawing impliments to produce a wide range of drawings inspired by images from the presentation and 3D projection. Digital drawings were produced on interactive white boards and Thunder™. A large collaborative drawing was produced in the atrium. The lecture, 3D visulisation and art interpretation facilitated the process of bringing complex biomedical concepts to a wide audience in interactive ways.
