NEW DIRECTORS Did you know that YHA is a not-for-profit organisation? Since YHA began over 75 years ago, it has been proudly not-for-profit. Today, YHA still has volunteer Directors, who generously donate their time and expertise to guide the organisation’s strategic direction. At the Annual General Meeting for YHA Ltd, held in Sydney on 11 April 2015, a new Director was welcomed to the Board - Robyn Antill, based in Brisbane. Also successful in being reelected to the Board were Euan Prentice, based in Sydney, and Tracey Powell from Adelaide. They join continuing Directors, Rob McGuirk, Leonie Thijssen, Matthew McNeil, David Neish, Dana Ghinzel and Ross McDougall. Thanks were also extended at the meeting to retiring Directors Cameron Quinten and Helen Harms, who served on the Board over many years. The composition of the Board embraces diversity by skills, age, gender and geographic location. All Directors use the YHA network on their travels, and have travelled extensively within Australia and overseas. In fact, new Director Robyn Antill is so intrepid she is eligible to join the elite Travelers’ Century Club - a non-profit social organisation representing world travelers who have visited 100 or more of the world's countries!

REGIONAL ACTIVITIES CLUBS YHA in Australia has regional clubs with a wide range of activities that you might like to get involved in. These social activity clubs are run by volunteers and include bushwalking, social gatherings, trips away and more. The Sydney Social and Outdoor Club has had a long history of involvement in smaller hostels, including Blue Mountains-Hawkesbury Heights YHA in recent years. Earlier this year, the YHA Bushies (based in Brisbane) celebrated their 50th Anniversary and continue to run a great program of bush walks in South East Queensland.

HI HASSELT HOSTEL - BELGIUM If it’s Tuesday, this must be Belgium! For too long simply a stopover on a bus trip of Europe, Belgium is finally cool and worth a look in its own right. Close to the German and Dutch borders, and famous as the ‘greenest’ province of Belgium in more ways than one, Hasselt is a fine example of an evolving sustainable city. Amble along carless streets, packed with trendy shops, restaurants and quirky cultural attractions. Visit the Fashion Museum and the Jenever Museum, to learn all about the history of the country’s traditional drink, gin. The city also hosts the annual Pukkelpop music festival (20-22 August 2015), featuring big name bands from Interpol to Charlie XCX and Australia’s own Tame Impala. But with a bit of careful planning and maybe just a touch of being a shameless cheapskate, you can get on the white stuff without blowing your budget. In Australia, high in the Kosciuszko National Park, in the heart of the Snowy Mountains, Thredbo is the place to get alpine this season. It’s got the goods – Thredbo is the oldest ski resort in Australia, celebrating over 50 years and the long runs are great for everyone, from beginners right through to black diamond showoffs.

GETTING THERE Bussing it down or carpooling with your mates is the first way to save. It’s an easy drive from Sydney and Canberra and you can sort out your best fares through companies like Greyhound, Murrays and SnoExpress. Pack your car snacks and get your petrol well before you reach the mountains while prices are lower to save even more.
TICKETS PLEASE! The biggest expense on the mountains is definitely your ski pass, but there are some ways you can save on those too. Skiing in the shoulder season is a gamble with how much snow coverage there’ll be, but if there’s an early or late season dump, you’re laughing! There are four key date ranges within the season, so choose the one that represents the best value for you. Thredbo encourage you to ‘Buy Early & Save’ – if you buy your lift ticket, lessons or gear rental at least seven days in advance you can save up to 20%. Will you be in the village for a few days? If you ride more you can save more, so consider buying a multi day pass, rather than a new pass each day. And the savings extend to kids under 18 too. There are loads of food options on the mountain to tempt your dollars from your wallet, but plan ahead and you can save money here too. Start your day with a hearty bacon and egg roll and coffee at the bottom of Friday Flat or a pastry from The Bakery in the village. For lunch take a break from the mountain and try Kebabz Café for big, hearty kebabs in a flash, or a salad roll from The Bakery if you’re going healthy. After the ski day is over, your reward should always be a hot donut or three at the bottom of Friday Flat and a beer at the River Inn outdoor terrace. Cheaper dinner options are harder to find, but Alfresco Pizza is always a winner with good pizza at normal prices, including the all important BYO and the lively Thredbo Pub serves up counter meals before you kick on at Schuss Bar and Keller Bar. Spread your food dollar further though by planning a few selfcatered meals using the YHA kitchen. Just make sure to pick up supplies well before you reach the village. So don’t let a little budget hold you back this season – first tracks are still within reach. If all else fails, there’s always two-minute noodles for the truly hardcore budget powder hounds.

Love skiing, snowboarding, snow shoeing or any and all fun on and off the piste? New Zealand is a snow enthusiast’s haven with world-class ski fields on both islands. The mountains are high which means consistent snow that’s topped up by snow making systems at most ski areas. There’s plenty of downhill skiing and boarding but there’s also heli-skiing, glacier skiing, Nordic skiing, terrain parks and dedicated beginner areas. Travelling from Australia to the South Island is easy with direct flights into both Queenstown and Christchurch. In New Zealand, you’re not stuck with
having to book accommodation on the mountain so backpacking delivers the best (and most social) bang for your budget buck. Most YHAs near ski fields offer amenities like drying rooms, gear storage and tuning stations with added bonuses of roaring fires and/or spa pools. YHA Ohakune even offers an on-site ski and board rental shop. While bonuses vary from hostel to hostel, you’re guaranteed a good price, large kitchens and warm bed. But be sure to book for your alpine holiday early, once the white stuff hits the mountains our beds fill up fast!

PRIOR TO
visiting, I figured I’d find Japan fascinating but not particularly surprising. After all, I’ve studied karate and been a member of a Zen Buddhist meditation group. I’ve read lots of books about the Land of the Rising Sun and chatted to Japanese backpackers about their homeland. But during my two weeks in the country a line from Game of Thrones kept running through my mind: “You know nothing, Jon Snow.” If you’re interested in learning from my ignorance, please read on for an account of the three major things I had wrong about Japan.
JAPAN IS EXPENSIVE Japan isn’t one of those third-world destinations where you can live like a lord for three bucks a day but it’s not as pricey as everyone seems to believe either. At the time of writing, it’s possible to get a Sydney to Tokyo flight for south of $1000 and once you’re there it’s entirely feasible to travel in a reasonable level of comfort on a budget of around $100 a day. You can buy a seven-day Japan Rail pass that will seeing you whizzing between major cities, frequently in that famous bullet train, for around $300.

Food and alcohol is startlingly inexpensive - even in the heart of the most touristy districts, you can chow down at a restaurant while knocking back a few Kirin beers for around half of what it would cost you at an equivalent establishment in Sydney or Auckland. What’s more, many attractions are free and lots of everyday things that wouldn’t even be attractions in most nations most definitely are in Japan. Kyoto Station, for example, is public transport’s version of St Peter’s Basilica, a futuristic stainless steel cathedral. Fifteen floors high, it contains a vast shopping mall (called The Cube) and a 10-storey high Isetan department store, not to mention an art museum, theatre and countless restaurants and bars. But you don’t even need to spend a cent on any of that to have a good time, just make your way up to the Skyway tunnel and drink in the spectacular views of Japan’s original capital for nothing. Likewise, getting up before dawn to wander around a city’s seafood bazaar might not normally appeal, but the enormous Tsukiji Fish Market, which handles 2000 tonnes of edible marine products every day, is one of Tokyo’s most popular tourist attractions. It’s completely free, though you should get there early if you want to grab a spot at the auction where giant tunas are sold to the highest bidder. The majestic Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines and picture-postcard gardens you’ll find throughout Japan are typically either free or cheap to enter and there’s no charge for activities such as wandering around the streets of Gion, Kyoto’s geisha district, rubbernecking at the painted ladies that look like they’ve time-travelled from another century. Long story short, if you’ve been hesitating about hitting Japan out of fear it will send you broke, dither no longer.

YOU ONLY NEED TO VISIT THE METROPOLISES If someone hadn’t convinced me otherwise, I would have visited the usual suspects – Tokyo and Kyoto – with possible day trips to neighbouring regions such as Nara and Osaka. Thankfully, I did opt to spend a few days somewhere I’d never heard of. It was Takayama, a traditional medieval town about 300km away from Tokyo, which given the nature of the nation’s superb trains, it only involves a rapid but still scenic two-hour train ride through Japan’s version of the Alps. Especially after spending time in one of the antfarm megalopolises (some bits of Tokyo pack in 30,000 people per square kilometre), quaint villages within striking distance of the capital, such Takayama, Shirakawago, Ogimachi, Suganuma and Magome-Tsumago are a chance to unwind, ideally while feasting your eyes on the natural landscapes that have inspired generations of Japanese artists and rest your weary muscles in an onsen (a bathouse drawing water from a nearby hot spring). You’re not likely to find any pumping nightclubs but you’ll have the opportunity for the kind of serendipitous experiences that linger in the memory long after you’ve forgotten your formulaic trip to the top of Tokyo Tower or walk through a Shogun’s castle. My most memorable night out in Japan involved a dinner at a small Takayama restaurant where the giggling staff introduced my travelling companion and I to a whole lot of dishes you don’t find on the menus of Japanese restaurants in any Western country (the Japanese love their offal so much they’ve constructed a range of culinary delight utilising the tongues, uteruses, stomachs and “gristle” – whatever that is – of various quadrupeds).

Following that, we headed to what we’d been informed was a nearby jazz club only to walk through the door to find ourselves in a darkened space not much bigger than a living room. For the next few hours, the elderly owner of the ‘club’ happily crafted us cocktails while explaining, via no more than sign language and the playing of many vinyl LPs, the history of jazz from Jelly Roll Morton through Miles Davis to Herbie Hancock.
JAPANESE PEOPLE ARE [INSERT ADJECTIVE HERE] Everyone knows Japanese people are excessively polite or smugly racist or deeply conformist or disturbingly freaky or serenely spiritual or greedily materialistic or just plain weird. Well, maybe, but during my time there I discovered the Japanese could be politely racist (be prepared to be very courteously denied entry to certain venues on obviously spurious grounds) and that while plenty of the locals seemed to conform to corporate drone salaryman/demure housewife stereotype, lots don’t. Trust me I looked, but I didn’t come across a single respectable businessman brazenly perusing tentacle porn on a crowded train and when I headed into Tokyo’s red-light district of Shinjuku all the pimps were, for reasons I never discovered, African-American rather than tattooed Yakuza with missing fingers. Whilst the internet assures me they do exist, I didn’t come across any cat cafes, toilet-themed restaurants or used-panties vending machines in my travels either. Japan was easily the most foreign of the many foreign countries I’ve visited. It’s impossible to get a realistic impression of it until you’ve visited and, even then, it remains bewilderingly uncategorisable. So don’t completely trust anything anyone, least of all me, tells you about it; get over there and check it out for yourself.

So to me, there is nothing more soul-fulfilling than losing myself to that mighty ball of fire tipping its hat to the morning as it soars into the sky, bathing everything it touches in golden light. It’s my happy place. And when combined with the most st u n n i n g s u r ro u n d i n g s , t h e re i s nothing better on this earth. So when it comes to my ultimate top five? The choice is hard. But I have managed to narrow it down – just for you.

There is little more spectacular than the sight of the sun ascending over the rugged unspoilt coastline of Byron Bay as humpback whales frolic in the azure waters below during their migration north for winter. Trust me, I have seen and I have swooned. With the surroundings of Cape Byron Lighthouse the perfect elevated spot from which to take a seat (it is the easternmost point of the mainland of Australia), mother nature really does put on a show from the months of June to October as the whales move from their Antarctic summer feeding grounds. And its not just whales you might see. Dolphins and even turtles are on that list too (take or hire some binoculars for greater viewing) – all set against the most breathtaking backdrop basking in a pink dawn. Tempted? You should be. If you are looking for the ultimate vista of green and gold for your daybreak kick-start, the sunrise from the top of historic Mount Coolum (26 million years old, no less) is one not to miss. Offering the most stunning view of the Sunshine Coast, the energetic walk (moderate fitness required) to the summit of this mountain is well worth the effort. The prize? An unbeatable panorama as the sun ascends to greet you. Take a packed breakkie, and lose yourself to the wonder of nature in all its glory – just allow 30/40 minutes from base to peak to get there in time for the spectacle. Nearest YHA: Noosa Heads YHA
There is little more Australian (and little more rad in my view) than talented surfers doing their thang. To me, it’s one of the wonders of the world, along with … sunrises. So when it comes to combining the two, it would be fair to say that you can almost feel the magic, with the hardcore daybreak surfies matching their turns to each rising ray. With Snapper Rocks renowned on the surfing scene as the place of the Australia Quicksilver Pro, the vista not only promises sun, surf and sand, but an iconic location also. My favourite eastern facing beach on earth is without a doubt Sunshine Beach. Nestled south of Noosa Heads, this stretch of white sand is one of the coolest places to sip on your sun-up coffee as you lose yourself to the sound of waves and dashing beauty. Think fluorescent orb appearing with heartstopping magnificence over the horizon, and you’re there. Remember those worries you had? Gone. This place is truly a paradise-found representing all that is incredible about our great land. And I am not the only one who thinks so, as proud locals revel in their wake-up call every morning with a run, swim or yoga session timed for the light hitting their skin. MOUNT COOT-THA
Heading west out of Brisbane city, forming the eastern extent of the Taylor Range, is Mount Coot-tha, 287 metres above sea level. A favourite haunt of mine when in Brisvegas for its immense views, Mount Coot-tha offers the most outstanding sunrise snoop at the city as she sleeps, with sparkling rays bouncing off the urban landscape like a strobe. Get there before the sun has shown itself and you will be rewarded with the most spectacular display of colours as the star peeks over the horizon. Nearest YHA: Brisbane City YHA
