CELEBRATE ALL THAT IS! THERE IS SOMETHING SO UNIQUE ABOUT THE SUMMER SEASON—THE ENERGY IN THE AIR IS VIBRANT AND SWEET.
This is a time to celebrate personal milestones and national holidays, from graduations to marriages and memorial services to fireworks. The air is filled with the smoky essences of BBQs and birds, and crickets sound off their collective songs. ANN K. CASTLE FOUNDER & PUBLISHER
It is human nature to embrace any and all opportunities to gather, celebrate and create memories, especially during the summer months. Sweaters are put away and flip-flops are brought out with an air of anticipation for comfort and freedom. The beaches and waves are filled with vacationers and weekend warriors alike as we truly love the paradise nature has provided along our California coast.
We tend to get wrapped up in the moment of celebration and forget the safety factors of being in the heat and sun. Please be aware of the dangers of excessive sun exposure, heat stroke and food safety. I know—I sound like a mother hen, but that’s my job—to be protective and vigilant about your health. In this issue, we address the importance of detecting skin cancer and the preventive steps to safety and protection, learning to listen to your body, and healthy steps to take before and during pregnancy. We also explore the stresses of personal finances, provide tips for a better personal relationship and explain what all the quacking is about with Aflac. Go out there and celebrate the season and each other. One of the healthiest things you can do for yourself is to be surrounded by friends and loved ones and laugh out loud. Celebrate you, celebrate your health and celebrate life to its fullest! With Peace, Love, Health and Gratitude,

IT’S JOHNNY’S FIRST DAY AS CATCHER IN LITTLE LEAGUE. The bat comes back and hits catcher Johnny’s face. His front tooth is knocked loose—an all too familiar scenario at the dental office. If this ever happens to one of your kids, don’t panic. Here is what you need to know. Time is of the essence. Modern studies have shown that 5 minutes to an hour is the window for success for re-stabilizing the tooth. If the tooth is fully knocked out do not use any cleaning chemicals on it. After the accident, the tooth should be located and picked up by the crown or enamel portion and NOT the root. If the tooth is dirty or contaminated, it should gently be rinsed with milk or water. Do not store the tooth in water. If a primary (baby) tooth is knocked out, do NOT try and reimplant it yourself. This could cause damage to the permanent tooth bud in formation. The good news is that the success rate for tooth reimplantation is high. Your dentist will stabilize the tooth and monitor it over the next few months.

SUMMER’S HERE AND IT IS TIME TO ENJOY THE PLEASURES OF THE SEASON, BUT BE AWARE OF THE POTENTIAL DANGERS OF BEING EXPOSED TO THE SUN AND HEAT.

INCREASE YOUR WATER INTAKE
EXTRA PROTECTION
THE EYES HAVE IT
STAY COOL
PROTECT YOUR CHILDREN AND PETS
Keep bottled water with you when out and about in the car, working in the garden or on the beach. Sugary soft drinks and alcoholic beverages do not count – they only dehydrate the body even more. Eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables are also helpful in keeping your body hydrated. If you find yourself thirsty, your brain is telling you that your body is already in dehydration mode.
Protect yourself from the dangerous rays of the midday sun. A large-brimmed hat and plenty of sunscreen are needed for proper protection from the dangers of sunburn and the increased risk of skin cancer. Remember to apply 30 minutes prior to going out and reapply if you perspire or swim. To understand the SPF numbers, the Melanoma Foundation explains it this way, “While an SPF of 2 will absorb 50% of ultraviolet radiation, an SPF of 15 absorbs 93% and an SPF of 34 absorbs 97%.”
We tend to forget that sun exposure is hard on our eyes as well. Long term exposure to UV radiation without proper eye protection may cause cataracts, damage to the retinas and in severe cases, macular degeneration. The American Optometric Association recommends that you have proper UV protective lenses that block out 75 to 90 percent of visible light. This doesn’t just apply to regular sun exposure, but also when snow skiing or exposure to laser lights.
Seniors tend to be more susceptible to heat stroke this time of year; they try to save money by not using their home airconditioning units properly. The result is an extremely dangerous situation. Please remember to check on your parents and grandparents and make sure they are cool, safe and hydrated.
Little ones and pets are the most vulnerable when it comes to heat exposure. Do not leave them in the car! The interior of a car can quickly soar to 90 degrees even if it’s 78 degrees and in the shade. It only takes minutes for a car to become a deadly environment for a child or pet. It’s dangerous and illegal – take the children with you and leave the pets at home unless they can be with you at all times.

SKIN CANCER, OR THE ABNORMAL GROWTH OF SKIN CELLS, IS THE MOST COMMON OF ALL CANCERS. THE MAIN CAUSE OF SKIN CANCER IS UNPROTECTED AND EXCESSIVE EXPOSURE TO ULTRAVIOLET (UV) RAYS, PRIMARILY FROM THE SUN. MORE THAN ONE MILLION CASES ARE DIAGNOSED EVERY YEAR IN THE UNITED STATES.

SKIN CANCER HAS A BETTER PROGNOSIS THAN OTHER CANCERS, WITH A CURE RATE OF

“
HOW TO PERFORM
it begins in the melanocytes, the pigmentmaking cells of the skin. it often appears as a large brownish spot, a simple mole, dome-shaped bumps, dark lesions or a small lesion with an irregular border. early diagnosis is critical in curing melanoma. “once it spreads to the lymph system and other internal organs, the prognosis is poor. it’s very likely to cause death,” says dr. peter Karlsberg, a dermatologist at community memorial hospital in ventura.
this cancer develops primarily on sun-exposed skin but can also form beneath the fingernails, in the spaces between toes and on other body parts that are normally not sun-exposed.
TYPES OF SKIN CANCER there are three main types of skin cancer, the most common of which (about 70 percent) is basal cell carcinoma. this cancer develops in the basal cells or the skin cells located in the lowest layer of the epidermis. it is considered the least dangerous because it rarely metastasizes or spreads to other organs. it can appear as a pearly or waxy bump on the face, ears or neck, or as a flat, flesh-colored or brown scar-like lesion on the chest or back. squamous cell carcinoma is not as common as basal cell carcinoma, but is considered more dangerous because it can metastasize. it accounts for about 20 percent of skin cancers. this cancer begins in the squamous cells, found in the upper layer of the epidermis. it can take the form of a firm, red nodule or a flat lesion with a scaly, crusted surface on the face, lips, ears, arms, neck or hands. considered the most serious form of skin cancer, melanoma accounts for about 5 percent of all diagnosed skin cancers.
both the american cancer society and the american academy of dermatology recommend following the “abcde rule” to spot the usual signs of melanoma. be on the lookout and tell your doctor about any spots that match the following description: A is for ASYMMETRY one half of a mole or birthmark does not match the other. B is for BORDER the edges are irregular, ragged, notched, or blurred. C is for COLOR the color is not the same all over and may include shades of brown or black, or sometimes with patches of red, white, or blue. D is for DIAMETER the spot is larger than 6 millimeters across (about ¼ inch — the size of a pencil eraser) or is growing larger. E is for EVOLVING look for changes over time, such as a mole that grows in size or that changes color or shape. moles may also evolve to develop new signs and symptoms, such as new itchiness or bleeding.

RISK FACTORS contrary to popular belief, skin cancer can affect people of all skin tones, from the palest to the darkest individuals. however, those with light-colored skin, eyes and hair are at a higher risk. less pigment or melanin in fair-skinned individuals provides less protection from dangerous uv radiation.

a family history of skin cancer also increases one’s risk of developing skin cancer, as well as a history of sunburns or exposure to uv rays. a person who has had skin cancer previously is also at a higher risk of developing it again. dr. Karlsberg describes the other risk factors: “moles numbering in the 20s or more in the trunk area would also concern me. also, precancerous skin lesions on the face, lower arms and hands — these are brown or dark pink and look like rough, scaly patches.”
SCREENING TESTS early detection is the key to catching skin cancer at its most treatable stage. “depending on their history or risk category, i would recommend a physical exam or skin check to establish a baseline,” says dr. lisa oki, a dermatologist at simi valley hospital. dr. oki also recommends doing a skin self-exam (see boxed guide) on or around one’s birthday. local chapters of the american cancer society (acs) and the american academy of dermatology (aad) have free skin cancer screening programs periodically. check online for schedules.
TREATMENT if your doctor suspects skin cancer, he or she may need to take a biopsy or a sample of your skin. this is the only way to tell if skin cancer is present. the biopsy is an outpatient procedure using local anesthesia to remove the lesion, which is usually sent to a lab for analysis. sometimes no treatment is needed beyond the initial biopsy to remove the entire growth. if treatment is necessary, several factors need to be taken into considera-

sun safety tips
> Avoid deliberate sun exposure. UV rays are the
most intense between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
> Wear sunscreen year-round. About 20 to 30 min-
utes before stepping outside, cover exposed skin with sunscreen lotion that has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. Re-apply as needed, every two hours or so.
> Wear protecting clothing. Long sleeves, widebrimmed hats and sunglasses that block UV rays are good choices.
> Avoid tanning beds and sun lamps. They emit UVA rays that can cause precancerous skin lesions.
> Be aware of sun-sensitizing medications. Alert your
doctor about the medications you are taking, for potential side effects. Some of them can make you more sensitive to sunlight.
> Check your skin regularly and report changes to your doctor. Check for new skin growths or changes to existing moles, freckles and birthmarks. Sources: American Cancer Society, Mayo Clinic

NATURALAPPROACH | NUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES
BY DR. SHARON NORLING
YOUR BODY IS TELLING YOU SOMETHING窶認OREWARNED IS FOREARMED! ARE YOU EXPERIENCING HAIR LOSS, CHIPPED NAILS, DARK CIRCLES UNDER YOUR EYES, SWELLING FINGER JOINTS, ACNE OR PSORIASIS?
do you notice swelling of your lower legs, bumps on the back of your upper arms, loss of hair on your arms or rosacea?
THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEMS if so, you have multiple nutrient deficiencies. but which vitamins, minerals or amino acids are low? specialty tests can determine your specific imbalances. requesting tests is a better approach than going to a drug store or health food store, searching through the myriad selections on shelf after shelf and just picking a few nutrients that may or may not help.
TAKE THE BEST COURSE OF ACTION research shows that 40 to 50 percent of overthe-counter supplements, including those on the internet, contain contaminants and 40 to 50 percent do not even contain what the label indicates. your health care professional, who is trained in nutrition, who knows your medical history, knows the supplements and/or medications you are currently taking, and has your lab results is a better resource for you. individualized care is the key to living your best life. treating the average is overrated and often counter-productive.

recently i took an extensive nutritional course given by drs. alan gaby and Jonathan Wright. both are well-respected, published physicians in the field of medical nutrition. this article is based on their course and dr. gaby’s new book, Medical Nutrition, 2012, comprised of 1,500 pages and 15,000 scientific references.
acid is in your stomach for a couple of reasons. First, to digest your food and secondly to kill the bacteria, viruses and parasites you eat every day. if you are taking an antacid or have low stomach acid your food is not getting digested properly. even if you are eating well you can have nutrient deficiencies.
WHAT YOUR HAIR CAN TELL YOU
if you have gerd or heartburn it most likely stems from a hidden immunoglobulin g (igg) food sensitivity, which can be determined by a blood test that checks 90 different foods. among other purposes, igg antibodies exist to provide us with an immune response. however, when too many igg antibodies are produced for a specific food, the antibodies attach to the food and enter the bloodstream, resulting in an allergic reaction. When the patients stops eating the identified foods to which they are allergic, the stomach and esophagus can heal.
if you are a younger woman with hair loss there is a good chance you may have low stomach acid. in most cases, incomplete protein digestion with subnormal stomach acid results in low levels of amino acids and essential minerals. in this situation, supplementation with hydrochloric acid and pepsin capsules can correct your low stomach acid for better digestion. people with low stomach acid may experience belching or bloating after eating.
many published articles in the medical literature today describe the nutrient deficiencies, including osteoporosis, that result from the use of antacids.
these symptoms may also be due to an infection of h. pylori (helicobacter pylori, a stomach bacterium which can also cause peptic ulcers). if you are a post menopausal woman with hair loss you may also have this digestive issue. Fifty percent of people at age 50 and 85 percent of those older than 80 have low stomach acid. this may be why we see the older population getting thinner, shorter and more frail. they are nutrient-deprived. if you are a middle-aged woman and have much less hair on your arms and legs than you once did, have your dhea checked. replacing dhea to the normal level is a good idea, not only for your hair, but to enhance your immune system and decrease the risk of cancer. thinning hair can be caused by low dhea, thyroid dysfunction, lack of b vitamins or hormonal imbalances.
+++
Fifty percent of people at age 50 and 85 percent of those older than 80 have low stomach acid.
if it is painful to brush your hair, you probably need more vitamin d. have your vitamin d checked and your doctor will recommend how much you need. low levels of vitamin d can cause increased risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, alzheimer’s, osteoporosis, irritable bowel syndrome and depression.
WHAT YOUR EYES AND FACE CAN TELL YOU if your eyes are chronically red and itching, eye drops from a compounding pharmacy containing vitamin a and vitamin c often relieve these symptoms. dark circles under your eyes may be caused by lack of sleep but often are a sign of hidden food allergies.

do you have small, red, dilated veins on your nose or cheeks? this can be due to low stomach acid, too much alcohol or both! nose stuffiness may be due to inhalant allergies, but food allergies are often overlooked. polyps in the nose may be due to sensitivity of salicylates such as aspirin, many artificial colors or flavors, as well as foods containing salicylates: raisins, grapes, berries, cucumbers, peppers and beverages.
do you get cracks in the side of your mouth? riboflavin, b2, can make these go away. acne on the face and chest can be eliminated by removing food allergies, healing the gastrointestinal tract, and eliminating sugar and refined carbohydrates. add foods that contain zinc and essential fatty acids such as sunflower and pumpkin seeds. meat is also high in zinc. supplements of zinc, fatty acids, selenium and vitamin e are also helpful.
WHAT YOUR EXTREMITIES CAN TELL YOU
is your tongue cracked and grooved? this is a deficiency of folic acid, vitamin b12 and zinc. be patient, it’ll take months to clear. When using vitamin b12 or folic acid, be sure to use the methylated form—methylcobalamin (b12) and folinic acid or 5methyl tetrahydrafolate. sixty percent of people cannot methylate so it is best to use the bio-available form.
WHAT YOUR MOUTH CAN TELL YOU do you have a canker sore on your gums? there is a high probably you have food allergies. also check your toothpaste, since sodium lauryl sulfate can contribute to canker sores. using a probiotic, iron, b12, and folate can lessen canker sores.

persistent pain at the base of one or both thumbs may be relieved by a series of daily vitamin b12 injections. if this works, you probably have low stomach acid and are not digesting your food well or absorbing your nutrients. do you have chronic swelling in your lower legs? make sure you have tests to rule out serious disorders such as cardiovascular, liver or kidney disease. if the results are negative, your swelling could be due to insulin resistance type 2 diabetes, toxins or food allergies (allergies sound like a consistent theme but it is so true). thick calluses on your heels are often due to low vitamin a. use 50,000 to 65,000 iu of vitamin a daily. this is safe for adults. in two to three months the calluses should be smaller and in eight to nine months they should be gone. then go back to using only 25,000 iu of vitamin a. if the heels do not have calluses but are dry and cracked, you need to use

more essential fatty acids (for the dryness) and zinc (for the cracking). this works for dry, cracked fingertips, too.

ALWAYS FOCUS ON THE CAUSE nutrient deficiencies can be caused by poor diets, low stomach acid, antacids, food allergies or gastrointestinal dysfunction. if you can’t digest your food or absorb your nutrients it is only a matter of time before symptoms occur, followed by more serious illnesses. the only way we live and heal is by the water we drink, the air we breathe and the food we eat. to protect your health and help your body heal, consider the advantage of using iv nutrient therapies. When nutrients are given intravenously, a higher dose of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and lipids can be given into the blood stream where they are distributed throughout the body. given iv, there is 100 percent absorption of the nutrients and the body heals faster. your body is telling you something. the signs and symptoms often are just the tip of the iceberg as the deficiencies are also impacting vital organs. listen to your body and answer its call!

MONEY AND HEALTH
— ( O T H E R
N A M E S

S T R E S S )
IN SPEAKING WITH SEVERAL PROFESSIONAL therapist friends it seems people seek therapy for three pri- mary issues: family, sex and money. Family is a mystery to me (not my wife and kids) and sex is not a subject that would endear you to my writing. so, money it is. Why can money issues be so stressful? it’s simple really— we live in a capitalist society. as such, when you don’t pay a bill for a service or product, the service or product is taken away from you. When the item was one you, your family or your business relied on (such as your home or food), this creates tremendous pressure, which for most of us results in stress. this stress can be very harmful to your health. money is a leading source of stress for americans, according to a 2007 survey by the american psychological association. in the survey, 73 percent of the respondents cited money as a significant source of stress in their lives. today more than three out of every four american families are in debt according to the Federal reserve's survey of consumer Finances. so, what exactly can we do to make life more of what we need and want? the simple answer is to make more (money), save more (money) and spend less (money).

however, that’s only part of the answer. We need to know the actions we can take to accomplish the above and then we need to do them to create some semblance of balance. Why? even those who make plenty of money and have plenty of savings suffer from a great deal of stress. they often work 60 to 80 hours each week, fail to get enough sleep, eat poorly—and to top it off—spend very little time with their spouses and kids. talk about stress!

If you sit a lot in your job, get up out of your chair. Nobody said phone and computer work had to be accomplished while sitting down. If you absolutely cannot get up then make sure you stretch at least every 30 minutes. If you are employed, start a small home-based business. You can do anything, although it is highly likely you will find something you believe in and enjoy since there are so many choices. Do not scoff at an extra $200 a month. If you don’t want it, send it to me! If you are self-employed, stop messing around. You don’t have time to waste. Take the morning to write a list of all of the things you do that actually make money and those that don’t. Stop doing everything on the second list. If it must be done, do it only once you have completed the money-making activities. Find inexpensive or free ways to delegate the other activities. Go for a 10-minute walk every day. I don’t care when you do it or even if you do it at the same time each day. Walking requires no special system or CDs to buy and you don’t have to do it on one leg while going up-hill after drinking a special shake. Just do it every day. No excuses. You’ll soon understand why it works. Save some money every day, every week, every month. It doesn’t matter how you do it. Just save. Some of my clients save $1 a day, $25 a month, $10 from each pay check. Put it in a savings account, in a 401k or start an IRA. Match your discretionary spending with savings, start a counter jar or put it in a piggy bank—anything—something is better than nothing.

HEALTHVIEW 2 BETTER MEN
3 STEPS TO
GETTING UNSTUCK— FOR MEN BY WAYNE M. LEVINE DIRECTOR, BETTERMEN COACHING
MOST OF US MEN COME TO A POINT IN OUR LIVES WHERE WE FIND OURSELVES STUCK IN OUR OWN STUFF. it could be in our relationships, our career or in our spiritual journey. but wherever it is, it’s got us unhappy, frustrated, angry, and often times not very pleasant to be around. i’ve been that man. how about you? so how do we get unstuck? it’s simple. make commitments, take action and be held accountable. that’s the essence of the bettermen process.
COMMITMENT the only obstacle between you and becoming the man you want to be is commitment. When we commit to something, we no longer have to struggle with a choice. the choice has already been made. We made it. life becomes a little more black and white, which is what commitments are all about. the commitment frees us from doubt and allows us to redirect our energies to more positive endeavors—like taking action.

Is it time for a financial health check? ACTION taking action is the difference between being a man who talks about change and a man who is committed to change. that action can be grand or simple. What’s most important is staying in continuous action to achieve the change you’ve committed to in order to become the man, father, husband and leader you want to be.
ACCOUNTABILITY doing this work alone and expecting to successfully stay in action is setting yourself up for failure. Why not set yourself up for success? enroll the support of other men. ask to be held accountable to your commitments. offer your support to these other men who are also engaged in this process of being better men. the trusting relationships you develop can change the course of your life and the lives of those you love. as the famous line goes, i’m not just the company’s president—i’m also a client. this work is my passion because this work has helped me to be more comfortable in my own skin, to be a more loving husband, and to be the father i wanted to be. the work continues to support an ever-growing circle of men in their efforts to experience joy more often, to be successful in business and to be held accountable as men, fathers, husbands and leaders. Wayne M. Levine is the director of BetterMen Coaching in Agoura Hills. He teaches men to be the best men, fathers and husbands they can be through individual, couples and group coaching, both in office and via phone. Wayne is also author of the best-selling Hold On to Your N.U.T.s—The Relationship Manual for Men. Find out more and get a copy of Wayne’s book at www.BetterMenCoaching.com.
Many health-conscious Californians see their physician annually for a routine checkup. Most keep their smiles bright with regular visits to the dentist and—we do love our cars which get serviced every couple of months! Isn’t your financial health just as important? A financial professional can help you identify healthy and unhealthy financial habits and will suggest ways to improve your financial fitness. Depending on your circumstances, this might include: Developing a budget. Identifying strategies to reduce debt and build savings. Allocating savings toward specific near-term and long-term goals. Assessing how well-protected you are against financial stress. Recommending investments that are suitable, given your risk tolerance and goals.

HEALTHVIEW 3 AFLAC - HOW IT WORKS FOR YOU
—SUPPLEMENTAL INSURANCE THAT PAYS YOU DIRECTLY AS AN INDEPENDENT AGENT REPRESENTING AFLAC, JULIE KRAUS BELIEVES HER ROLE IS CRUCIAL IN TODAY’S ECONOMY BECAUSE MANY PEOPLE ARE BARELY GETTING BY WITHOUT EXTRA MONEY FOR UNEXPECTED MEDICAL EXPENSES THAT ARISE DUE TO ILLNESS OR INJURY.
BY ALICIA DOYLE
“aflac doesn’t pay the doctors or hospitals. aflac policies are designed to pay benefits directly to the insured, over and above whatever health insurance or state disability pays,” explained Kraus, of southern california. “aflac policies help with out of pocket medical expenses, loss of income, daily living expenses, etc. aflac pays benefits directly to the insured, and they use the money as they see fit in their time of need.” aflac—which stands for american Family life assurance company of columbus (in georgia)—insures more than 50 million people worldwide and is considered a leader in voluntary supplemental benefits. “aflac is a Fortune 200 company, and we pride ourselves on outstanding customer service,” Kraus said. aflac pays more than $3 million per day in claims and processes most claims in 7 to 10 business days. “aflac benefits have allowed people to continue paying their bills when they’re out of work due to an illness or injury,” Kraus explained. “instead of using their savings, retirement, or even losing their homes, aflac benefits prevent them from having to use other financial resources they’ve worked so hard for. aflac policies give people freedom of choice when making healthcare decisions, and the peace of mind knowing the benefits from aflac can be used however they see fit.”

...WE ARE PROUD TO BE A WORLD’S MOST ETHICAL COMPANY FOR A SIXTH STRAIGHT
YEAR BECAUSE IT SENDS A STRONG MESSAGE... aflac has been listed as one of Fortune’s 100 best companies to Work For for 12 consecutive years, and has also been listed as one of Fortune’s World’s most admired companies for the ninth year. aflac was praised as one of the World’s most ethical companies by ethisphere institute for several consecutive years. “We recognize that when it comes to purchasing insurance, a big part of the decision is based upon the consumer’s perception of a company as being trustworthy, transparent and ethical,” said dan amos, aflac chairman and ceo. “our products represent a promise to customers that we will be there in their times of need, so we are proud to be a World’s most ethical company for a sixth straight year because it sends a strong message from ethisphere— the foremost authority on business ethics—that aflac can be trusted.” the wellness benefits are a great feature of aflac policies because they pay people for having annual wellness exams that may already be covered by their health insurance, Kraus said. “other companies do offer this, but it is part of what makes supplemental policies such as aflac’s unique.” aflac is available to people ages 18 to 64. “it can be a complement to existing medical insurance, or for someone who may not have any insurance, there are also options available,” Kraus said.
aflac is a great voluntary benefit for businesses to offer their employees, and both the employer and employee may experience the benefits of pre-tax savings. “many aflac policies are also available on a direct basis to individuals,” Kraus said. “i work with each person individually to determine what fits within their budget and what meets their needs. it’s a great way to customize your insurance package.” Kraus initially discovered aflac when she was looking for a job back in 2003. “i had been working for an insurance broker for five years and he changed the direction of his business and moved to las vegas. i didn’t know anything about aflac when i interviewed, and it was the best decision i’ve ever made. i’m living the aflac dream, and won’t ever do anything else. this is the career for me.” today “i am so grateful to be part of aflac,” Kraus said. “i wake up every day knowing i’m helping people in their time of need. i can’t change what happens to people, but knowing that aflac and i are doing what we can to help make a difference is the most rewarding part of my job. i am fortunate to represent a company with great products and services, and a company with the highest integrity and customer service expectations. the positive impact i hope to have on my clients is to exceed their expectations.” For more 805.404.9157.

HEALTHYKIDS | HEALTHY PREGNANCY
BY KATIE GREELEY DC, CACCP
HEALTHY PREGNANCY— PRE-CONCEPTION THROUGH DELIVERY CREATING A LIFE IS ONE OF THE MOST JOYFUL EXPERIENCES A MOTHER CAN HAVE. IN 1999 WHEN I BECAME PREGNANT FOR THE FIRST TIME I WAS EXCITED AND NERVOUS AT THE SAME TIME. I WONDERED IF I KNEW ENOUGH ABOUT WHAT TO EXPECT AND WHAT I COULD DO TO ENSURE HAVING THE HEALTHIEST, MOST NATURAL PREGNANCY AND DELIVERY.
When your body goes through pregnancy changes they happen so quickly and the new experiences can lead to very unfamiliar feelings. the good news is there is a lot you can do before you become pregnant as well as throughout labor and delivery. Just as with planning your wedding, before you conceive you need at least six to 12 months to prepare.
YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT With the rise of disorders like autism and adhd you can’t ignore what you are eating and exposing yourself to prior to conception. this is a perfect time to improve your diet. adding prenatal multi vitamins free from dyes and toxic preservatives is good but it shouldn’t stop there. you need to make better lifestyle choices, such as adding organically-grown grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts and sources of protein. organic is important because, according to the environmental Working group (eWg), “eating just five servings of fruits and vegetables from the 12 most contaminated would cause you to consume an average of 14 different pesticides a day.” if you have a history of digestive problems, food allergies, bloating or yeast issues, consider a natural detox and digestive tract clean up—assisted by someone who is well-informed. good sources of fiber include ground flax seed, psyllium husks, bran, whole grains, nuts and seeds.

you will pass on your intestinal flora to your baby even if it is sub-par. if you were bottle-fed, you didn’t receive the natural gut flora from your mother. if you were prescribed antibiotics for various infections in childhood, that also reduced the natural flora in your system. since probiotics decrease intestinal absorption of certain chemicals by facilitating their excretion, after cleaning up your gut you should implement probiotics in your diet. you should also eliminate alcohol and tobacco use.
AVOID USING HARMFUL CHEMICALS a two-year study by eWg showed that newborns were born with 232 different toxic chemicals in their bloodstream. a 2006 report by the centers for disease control and prevention (cdc) stated the average american had 116 of 148 synthetic toxins in their blood. it’s a good idea to have a general blood test prior to conception and also check your vitamin d levels (d3 in particular). There are many ways to reduce your use of chemicals, but here are some common ones: • Switch to greener cleaning and personal care products. • Use green dry cleaners and carpet cleaners. • Consume water and other fluids using stainless steel or glass bottles. • Lots of fish and sushi have large amounts of mercury; use a mercury-free source of omega-3 fatty acids. • Minimize exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and keep cell phones in purses instead of pockets. • If you plan to remove your mercury-based amalgam dental fillings, do it at least six months prior to conception (select a dentist trained in removing the fillings safely). • Avoid bedding and clothing with flame retardants that may contain high levels of antimony and toxic substances.
HEALTH TIPS FOR PREGNANCY beginning a regular chiropractic care with a family wellness practitioner will prepare you for childbirth. it will optimize your nerve and immune system function and specific adjustments will balance your pelvic muscles and ligaments. There are many things you should eliminate during pregnancy. Some of these are: • • • • • • •
Artificial sweeteners. Soft drinks. Pre-packaged foods and foods with trans-fats. Fast food. White flour and refined sugar. All mercury exposure such as in dental work, flu shots and fish. Antibiotics and other over the counter and prescription medication (no pharmaceutical drug on the market has been proven safe for pregnancy. New studies show antidepressants are especially dangerous).

• Optimize your cardiac health— begin or continue your exercise routine. Exercise encourages good bowel movements as well as improving circulation. Walking 15 to 45 minutes four to five times a week and/or incorporating prenatal yoga, swimming or a stationary bicycle are all good exercises. • There is a higher risk of autism in cesarean-delivered babies. Your baby’s neurological function could be limited by skipping labor. Being able to walk and push on all fours will help your pelvis open and birth with greater ease, thus minimizing the forceful use of doctorassisted pulling, forceps and vacuum extraction. • Minimize intrusive procedures during labor such as multiple ultrasounds, induction, pain meds, epidurals, early cord clamping, etc. by researching and discussing these with your midwife or doctor. • Maintain good blood sugar levels by eating six small meals a day.
PREGNANCY HEALTH CARE TEAM start building a pregnancy health care team early during your pregnancy. interview midwives or obstetricians until you find one who makes you feel comfortable and empowered. interview doulas, lactation consultants, prenatal instructors, family wellness chiropractors and pediatricians early. discuss your views on health openly. home births are not for all, but in 2005 the british medical Journal found natural birth at home with certified practicing midwives is safe for low-risk mothers and their babies. they also found home births had much lower rates of medical interventions compared to births in hospitals.

NUTRITION POINTERS FOR BABY consider breast-feeding your baby. not only is this great to bond but it’s one of the best ways to provide optimal nutrition. minimize the possibility of food allergies by postponing solid foods until at least 6 months. start with organic vegetables then introduce fruits. make sure you wait at least four days between new food introductions to make sure there are no reactions. don’t introduce grains until your baby has teeth, when the digestive enzyme to break grains down is first present.
• Over ten years of experience using bio-identical hormone replacement therapy • Specialized testing for metabolic factors • Hormone balancing • Nutritional supplementation • Lifestyle changes (individualized diet and exercise) • Stress management
if mom has a history of eczema, food allergies and/or celiac, then avoid dairy, soy, gluten and grains.
THE BENEFITS OF CHIROPRACTIC CARE birthing can be strenuous for mother and baby, so both of you should be checked by a chiropractor who specializes in pediatrics to support strong nerve and immune system function.
• Education • Judicious use of medications as required Dr. Hilda Maldonado is board certified in Internal Medicine and additionally she is a diplomate of the American Academy of Regenerative and Anti-Aging Medicine.

SELF BY SHERRY GABA, LCSW
all of us enjoy having a reason to celebrate. our human nature and our culture have put the spotlight on specific days and moments to celebrate. We are all familiar with the joy of a wedding, a birthday party or an anniversary. We hold lavish parties, give gifts, eat great food and spend time with our loved ones.
the word celebration is often used in conjunction with a group of individuals. We have been taught that celebrations require a party of people, but this line of thinking prevents us from the bliss of celebrating alone. While the concept may seem foreign, some of our most important celebrations can be performed in the company of only yourself. often the largest transformations in our lives occur during our solo journeys. in my work as a psychotherapist and life coach, i find these shifts occur after there has been a major loss in someone’s life. Whether it is the loss of a significant relationship through death or divorce, a child moving off to college, the loss of a business partner or losing someone emotionally to the disease of substance abuse, most individuals i work with find these losses can actually become positive gains when seen from a different perspective. the calm after the storm of a major change often becomes our greatest celebration. Whether you are celebrating your newfound freedom or you’ve been able to let go of some past trauma, it is now time to celebrate you.
A MOMENT OF REFLECTION it doesn’t matter where you are on your journey through life; we all need to take a moment to reflect. Where have you been? What goals have you accomplished in your life? how did you accomplish them? these are three questions you should ask yourself at least once a year. if you haven’t started a journal, this is a great time to start, and answering these questions will help guide you.
all too often we get caught up in the day-today grind and we miss seeing elements of our lives we take for granted. taking a moment to reflect will remind you of all of the blessings that have manifested in your life. For some, these elements are material. you may have a great house, a nice car and all of the tech toys you want. For others, these elements are not material in nature. they may include good health, significant relationships from the past or present or the beginning of a new one. perhaps you have had a shift from being an employee to becoming an entrepreneur or have decided to go back to school in midlife. Write down all of the blessings in your journal. When you go back to that journal entry six months or a year from now, you will be able to see how much more abundant your life has become. your journal will become your map, helping you to see all of the great things that already are a part of your life. this exercise enables you to become an inquisitive witness of your life. it is a reminder that you are being blessed no matter what day of the year it is or what circumstances are occurring in your life.
A MOMENT OF GRATITUDE after you have acknowledged the abundant blessings that have already manifested in your life, it is supremely helpful to take a moment to sit in gratitude. What does this mean? if you are familiar with meditation, you already know that the human body, brain and soul need time to just be. this allows you to find your center and your balance. taking a moment of gratitude is similar to meditation but instead of having the goal of clearing your mind to find peace in the stillness of being, a moment of gratitude takes you on the path of finding peace in the joy of giving thanks.

MIND SPIRIT LIFE COACHING & PURPOSE
thank you are two of the most powerful words we can use. by having a moment of gratitude we are giving positive energy back to the universe. We are directing positive energy, our energy of gratitude, toward individuals for whom we are thankful. this is the best thank you card you can send to the universe. you have taken the time to give thanks, and you will experience a great sense of peace, love and joy after your moment of gratitude. you create the reality of your life. the minute you send out a positive intention of thank you, the universe hears you and returns more to be thankful for. that’s how the law of attraction works. When you give thanks you are vibrating at a much higher energy field, and by doing this you attract more positive things to yourself.
THE POWER OF CELEBRATION While the steps above may seem like work, the resulting celebration is well worth the investment of time and energy. your moment of reflection and moment of gratitude have led you to a unique, joyful celebration to cherish for your self. the best part of this celebration is that it can occur any place and at any time. celebrations of self are extremely powerful. you are giving thanks to the one person you may neglect the most—and that person is you.
CREATE YOUR OWN UNIQUE CELEBRATION can you envision the perfect celebration of self? perhaps it’s a weekend retreat, a day at the spa or even a new pair of shoes. celebrations of self don’t require an exotic location or a material gift. some of the best celebrations of self don’t require any money at all. great examples involve pampering—taking a bubble bath, taking a day off of work, gardening or discovering a new hobby that gives you a sense of accomplishment. the little things we do to celebrate ourselves often lead to the biggest rewards. celebrations come in all shapes and sizes. We have all enjoyed a great birthday party or a reception at a wedding. When we think of celebrations we think of large groups of people, extreme festivities, gifts and frolic. We tend to neglect the celebration of self, which is one of the most important things you can celebrate. take time to celebrate today—your mind, body and soul will thank you!
