Branton Farm Nurseries are situated in the pleasant village of Branton Doncaster. Established on the present site since 1984. Before that date the nurseries were located in Bessacarr established there in 1948. Before that Hyde Park and before that Kirkstall, Leeds. We are the 5th generation business going back to 1854 when the nurseries were in Leeds selling the produce on the market in Kirkgate.

OUR HISTORY

Our proud history covers a vast change in the gardening habits of the nation. Vegetable plants during the war years transformed the business from ornamental flower production like Orchid, Alstroemeria, Roses and Dahlias used to decorate the town hall and government buildings for royal visits and overseas guests banquets, to a highly productive supplier of cabbage, cauliflower and Brussel sprout plants, along with other produce which were sold on the markets of Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley from the early part of the century right up to the early 2000s. Sheffield and Barnsley being the main drivers selling tens of thousands of plants during the war years and after to the gardeners of South Yorkshire.

The family worked very hard to suffice demand and were regularly commended for their input regarding a healthy supply of young plants to the land army of individuals who planted up every spare piece of land. Even lawned areas were done away with to cater for the growing of food for the nation.

The journey times from the nursery to the market towns was very long and arduous especially Sheffield and on occasions the railway companies came to the rescue providing carriages to transport the plants from the nurseries to the old Victoria Station where porters would be waiting with barrows to get the products to market on time ready for the deluge of buyers eager to obtain vegetable plants to grow for there families and communities. The

working day would start at 4am and finish at 11pm. The skill of those individuals was second to none in the production of quality plants for the masses. Grandma used to say fires had to be lit at night on the prevailing wind side of the growing areas so the smoke would lessen the risk of frost damage to the young seedling beds even when the frame covers were all in place. The winters were much harder in those days.

Hagans Nurseries truly was and is even today brimming with history and remains proud to be one of the oldest businesses in Yorkshire.

A new generation of family and loyal team members are now ready to take it forward and hopefully provide the citizens of Doncaster and beyond with the finest range of plants available anywhere in the country. Look out for the new web site which will provide an e commerce experience worthy of a company second to none with plants, trees and sundries which are sensibly priced and delivered to your door fresh and sound as they are supplied over the counter on the garden centre.

Long live the King and forever be proud of our past generations who fought for our liberties and freedoms which we sometimes take for granted, which we shouldn’t I’m sure you’ll all agree.
