Plants with the power to do good

We’re more than just a garden centre Yes, we do blooming good plants, cared for and selected by our own horticulture experts. We do the garden tools, the compost, the furniture and everything you need to have a garden that others are envious of. We’re here with gifts from local independent makers, home accessories, indoor furniture and the bits in between. But what’s more, we’re: • a training provider and a proud employer of local people with mental health problems. • a big part of the local community, encouraging everyone - from green-fingered experts to brand-new beginners, from 8 to 80 (and beyond) - to get out gardening. • a not-for-profit social enterprise which means our profits are reinvested for the benefit of the local community – in particular mental health services. • a strong advocate for gardening being beneficial for your wellbeing. As a part of NAViGO, North East Lincolnshire’s leading provider of mental health services, we know better than most about the positive impact that gardening and time spent outdoors can have on your mental health.

So, when you shop with us, you’re helping us to continue to do all of those good things and more. Tel: 01472 238438 Email: info@grimsbygardencentre.org.uk

Going Green Grimsby Garden Centre is committed to making more than just your garden green.

From our beautiful nursery to the popular Potting Shed eatery, a range of continuous improvements are making the ever green garden centre more environmentally friendly including: - The introduction of biodegradable plant pots that can be recycled along with your usual plastic kerbside collection. - Biodegradable carrier bags. - All takeaway packaging used in The Potting Shed is produced from plant-based products and is 100% compostable. - Recycling cooking oil from the Potting Shed to power the garden centre, grounds maintenance and NAViGO company vehicles. - Taking advice from the HTA (Horticultural Trades Association) we’ve reduced our peat-based compost by 85% and will continue to phase out until all of our compost is peat-free. - Encouraging customers to take home plants that may be past their best and may otherwise go to waste by offering them at a massively reduced rate.

Jo Keen, NAViGO’s Head of Employment and Commercial Services said, “We recognise the importance of making the garden centre greener and we’re excited that these small changes are a step in the right direction for us.” “We’re actively looking for ways we can improve our recycling options and reduce our waste and energy consumption.”

We’re sure by now you know that we reinvest profits for the good of the local community and that we also support people with mental health difficulties with horticulture therapy and training at the centre. But did you know just how much support is going on behind the scenes? We’ve recently delivered a six-week Green Support Pathway consisting of a whopping 270 hours plus of training and more than 75 attendances! Our current weekly average of general training, support and horticulture therapy is over 45 hours per week. Our team do a brilliant job supporting and sharing their expertise with our volunteers and service users — and a huge thank you to our customers who support us in doing everything that we do! Anthony, a volunteer at Grimsby Garden Centre said: “The people at the garden centre are extremely friendly and understanding of mental health needs and help me when I volunteer by placing me in areas or doing jobs that I am comfortable doing, in a suitable environment. “Overall, volunteering at the garden centre has been a life saver. I am growing in confidence - I get fresh air and feel I have achieved something. I feel appreciated and part of a team. “I have more confidence, I am sleeping better, and I’m less anxious attending the garden centre. I have made some great friends and have been inspired to grow my own fruit and vegetables.”
