Welcome to Hudsons Plant Centre Back in November 2018, the brothers, Dale and Carl Hudson, together with their families, embraced an opportunity and opened their new Hudson’s Plant Centre in the village of Duffield, Derbyshire. Who knew what an amazing success it would turn out to be in such a short space of time, and then the opportunity arose to take over a garden centre on the outskirts of the historic town of Bedford. With a passion for plants and a thirst for the business and with their training and background in the wholesale Horticulture trade, Hudson’s very soon grew from strength to strength. This family run business soon attracted a number of customers on the basis of quality plants at attractive prices. More recently customers come from far and wide to benefit from some amazing loyalty club offers. From a modest start the Hudson’s Plant Centre at Derby has now extended the site to cater for the demands of the ever-growing number of customers who grace its doors, to now boasting two other sites. Bedford which opened in the September of 2020 to the newest site at Whitemoss, near Warrington which opened its doors in November 2021. All the sites still promoting plants first and foremost and delivering quality products at reasonable prices and expert advice which is willingly given.

So what do we now have in store for all our customers as we launch into 2024. Our outdoor plant area covers a broad range of plants that either the new or more experienced gardener could ever wish for. This includes a lovely selection of ornamental trees, ranging from the more popular garden varieties to some unusual specimens for those of a discerning nature. There are fruit trees and shrubs of many varieties, shapes and forms to cater for gardens from large to the more modest in size and different varieties to suit the many and varied tastes of the discerning fruit grower. Spring is one of the best times of the year in the garden when plants spring back to life. Don’t forget to buy your bulbs and seeds for planting, we stock a wide range of both in the centre. We also stock all the things you will need for propagation and planting. Also a considerable range of tools and watering equipment are available. Another new line we have started are our range of ultralight tools.
We have many plants for those problem shady areas. Here they don’t just survive they thrive. Shady areas don’t have to be grey they can be a riot of colour at different times of the year, and if you need any advice our experienced staff will be more than happy to help. We stock seasonal bulbs and seeds throughout the year along with all the growing media and equipment required to ‘grow your own’ whether that for you means flowers or vegetables. We are stocking new peat free composts which is much needed in order to preserve the environment.

Propagating trays and a host of pots and paraphernalia needed to make the magic happen are available. We have a large range of fertilisers and treatments for growing or whether it’s to keep those pests and diseases at bay and expert advice is readily available. We also have a far more extensive range of Wilkinson and Wolf Garden tools to cater for the discerning gardener. As well as the vast variety that Wolf tools offer we have a range of stainless steel hard wearing Wilkinson implements traditionally and elegantly styled whilst still being strong and ultimately practical. We have also recently stocked a range of light weight garden tools. We also have an extensive range of watering equipment, from hoses to watering cans and a good range of accessories.
Our range of statues and outdoor ornaments add focal points and structures of interest in the garden, and these range from traditional pieces to more classical and the downright whimsical. We believe gardens are an all-year round affair and not just for the summer months. These ornaments also make poignant and special gifts which can be treasured whatever the weather. Look out for our new range of plaques that are proving very popular. Our outdoor living department has continued to grow as people continue to make the most of their gardens. Benches and outdoor dining has remained very popular together with outdoor cooking and firepits, which we have to suit all budgets. These together with an array of lighting and outdoor decorations really turn the humble garden into a more usable outdoor living space in which to enjoy on your own or with friends.

We maintain a large stock of shrubs of all shapes and sizes throughout the year including evergreen and deciduous bushes, scented and flowering as well as those with interesting foliage that add diversity and structure to the garden borders. We also have larger shrubs for a more instant impact in the garden and keep different forms of hedging all year round.
Climbing plants have become ever increasingly popular as people have sought to hide unsightly fencing or barriers, or to train over buildings, pergolas or archways. There are many wonderful and stunning options to enhance vertical areas for the selective gardener to choose from and extending the flowering period can be achieved by a judicious decision to add colour and vibrancy in the form of climbers. New varieties are ever coming to the fore and adding height to gardens can add another dimension and that luscious splash of colour throughout the year.

All the staff at our sites have a passion for all things relating to the garden centre, so whether you need one to one advice or just a general overview, we can help. Plant teams across the sites will always help with any garden related queries wherever possible. House plants continue to grow in popularity and we are constantly adding to our stock and looking for new varieties that will thrill and inspire our customers. We have many amazing foliage plants and a large range of flowering exotic beauties, from large leafed, jungly exhibits to the weird and wonderful and downright strange all displayed to their best advantage in a creative and inspiring atmosphere. These are housed together with a dazzling array of stylish and yet practical pots and containers which would grace any interior whether that be a domestic or commercial situation. All our sites have similar plants on offer which are tweaked slightly to cater for the locality and customer base at each venue. But all are in tip top condition and there are many unusual and sometimes rare plants on offer.
We offer an extensive bird care range which has also been expanded as people have realized their importance of encouraging birds into their gardens, not just as a wonderful spectacle but also to keep the ecosystem of the garden in balance, by naturally keeping pests down. Not only do we have a large variety of different feeds to suit the various garden visitors, but we have accompanying feeders, stands and bird tables and houses all elegantly designed and showcased. Adding to that this year we now stock wildlife feeds and a range of hedgehog houses for this very useful garden guest.

Following on from the introduction of our Loyalty Card Scheme our membership has gone from strength to strength, now amounting to over 20,000 members across our sites. We are able to offer Plant Club members all sorts of deals across all our departments not only relating to plants. We continue to provide a free plant of the month along with topical gardening tips and promoting seasonal plants whilst keeping all our members up to date with the goings on and offers available. Our Gift Cards have also proved very popular when trying to buy presents for gardening friends and relatives. These can be tailored to any amount, allowing the recipient to come and chose for themselves that special gift.
As we move into 2024, we will continue to provide and cater for your gardening needs and the momentum and delight that people have found in gardening doesn’t appear to have diminished at all, now that we have got back to ‘normal’ in many ways. There will be more exciting innovations and introductions at our sites and we all look forward to sharing our passion for plants and all things garden related with our new and existing customers alike.
