THE FARM SHOP
HISTORY
Herefordian born and bred Edward and Ros Price started Oakchurch Farm Shop from a little wooden shed on the side of the road in 1970. It was the outlet for their pick-your-own strawberry fields and the fresh produce that they were growing on the Oakchurch farm.
Beef fattened on the farm was soon being sold at the shop, as well as other top quality local produce, leading to the need for bigger premises and the addition of a garden centre. Oakchurch now provides a culinary showcase for local farmers, growers and food & drink producers and stocks over 10,000 locally grown plants.
AWARD WINNING
We’ve a phenomenal history of prestigious awards for our food, achieving seven Great Taste awards this year to add to our existing twenty-nine.
Made using fruit grown on our own farm and fresh local ingredients, our homemade raspberry sorbet and strawberry ice cream were just two award winners. More awards for Oakchurch included our homemade pies from our kitchens, made using traditional family recipes – apple pie, steak & ale and chicken & ham.
We count ourselves to be so lucky to be located in rural Herefordshire where great tasting food and drink is readily available and in great abundance, right here on our doorstep.
FOOD HALL
Often known locally as ‘The Harrods of Herefordshire’ the food hall here at Oakchurch Farm Shop specialises in local food and we’re proud to support local producers.
We’re a culinary showcase for more than 90 local food and drink makers, many of them multi award winners like us. Locally made ciders, ales, spirits and juices, honey, preserves and pickles, potato crisps and confectionery. In our deli you’ll find an extensive selection of interesting local cheeses, mouth-watering smoked salmon, patés, freshly baked bread, homemade coleslaw and more.
FRESH HOMEMADE SAVOURIES
BUTCHERY
Pork pies, sausage rolls, Scotch eggs and more are all freshly made on-site by our own butchers.
MELT-IN-THE-MOUTH BEEF
The grass-fed beef in our butchery comes from the Oakchurch family farm right next to the store. The Hereford Charolais crossbreed creates just enough fat (marbling) for the meat to remain succulent during cooking. It’s Himalayan salt dryaged for over 21 days to give it a rich flavour and meltin-the-mouth texture.
FREE-RANGE PORK
Packington pigs are reared outdoors to the highest welfare standards, with access to plenty of food and clean water, deep straw in comfortable shelters plus lots of room to stretch and socialise. Longer rearing time allows pigs to mature and produces delicious free-range pork.
TRADITIONAL SAUSAGES
Lovingly handmade by our butchers using Packington free-range pork and available in a range of flavours including our fiery Welsh dragon.
FREE-RANGE CHICKEN
Packington chickens roam free on established English pasture, with strategically placed perches and shelters offering shade and protection, and access to food and water.
Packington free-range chickens take twice as long to rear as standard chickens, giving them a fabulous flavour.
FREE-RANGE TURKEY
Our Usk Vale bronze free-range turkeys roam and forage on rolling Monmouthshire pastures from the age of six weeks. This freedom and enriched way of life helps to develop and improve the quality of the meat, giving it a superb flavour and texture.
LAMB
Our lamb comes from another family farm just up the road in nearby Bredwardine.
The Charolais breed was chosen as it provides a high quality, lean meat, perfect for today’s healthconscious cook.
GAME
Our game selection varies according to season. Look out for venison, partridge, pigeon, rabbit, and pheasant which comes from around the Leominster area, and wild boar from the Forest of Dean. Game is rich in protein, iron and minerals and lower in fat than red meat.
