MUJO App Social workers have difficulty in finding someone to teach dropouts. The online platform - MUJO can match interested teachers and social workers.

OVERVIEW 5% Design Action is a Non-Governmental Organization in Taiwan, making an effort to solve social problems. The current topic is innovation in education for children and youth. My team is assigned to care about dropouts.

TARGET GROUP - Dropouts ( Definition by the Taiwan Government ) Primary school and middle school students absent for no reason over 3 days will be classify as dropouts.

CURRENT SITUATION According to statistics from Taiwan Education Administration, Ministry of Education in 2012

The problem is more serious in middle school.

The dropouts proportion of male and female is narrowing.

The number of dropouts : 3500 people

INTERVIEW

We interviewed with five people in order to understand dropouts intensely. Some of them care about dropouts for many years and keep cooperate with the government. Some people are social works in charge of teenager problems. Some people even had ever been dropouts when they were young.

FINAL DESIGN The MUJO App represents the fruits of our labor in finding a way to help middle school dropouts. More specifically, nowadays, social workers have difficulty in matching teachers with students because, without further research, few people could possibly view these outcasts as anything more than hopeless slackers. MUJO resolves this information asymmetry by disclosing students’ course material and progress reports to the public, allowing eligible teachers to better understand their potential pupils and thus more likely to volunteer to help these adolescents — effectively freeing social workers from their dilemma.

BEYOND THE APP - STORE PROMOTION

We also design the leaflets to promote MUJO app. The circler leaflets place in many collaborative stores, free for people to take. There is information regarding MUJO and it can be used as an cup mat. Its back has a QR code for user to reach MUJO introduction website. Moreover, the leaflets design and MUJO app share the same graphic style.

Round table and table lamps are typically two separate items, but they are often placed together. H贸 combines the functions of table and lamp into one single design, becoming next to the sofa a table made in dark brown stained beech.

DESIGN PROCESS 1. Define Location and Function The first step of lighting design is to define its location and function. A lighting is not only a physical product with lighting source, but also providing a pleasant, varied atmosphere with the furniture and item around it. The planned location of H贸 is near sofa in a living room, so its scale should fit to the size of surrounding furniture. In addition, the height and weight of the table has to be convenient for people to take items, like a cup or newspaper that put on the table.

Keeping draw and try different angles and sizes for each part of the product, I finally decide the size of Hó. I spend most of time to design the three legs, because I need to care about its looking and structure at the same time, avoiding the centre of gravity at the wrong place.

5. Engineering Design 1. Because H贸 is made from beech, the joint parts need to install metal threaded inserts for wood. 2. The ends of three legs should be iron in order to resist long-term wear. 3. The edge of the circle table is radius, preventing from injuring people. 4. Using strong magnet to connect table and legs. Let users easily assemble the product.

Professional Work - Light Design

Point-line-plane

The inspiration is based on the fundamental objects of geometrypoint, line, and plane. Point is the lighting resource, line is the support and plane is the table itself. These three elements make up a space as well as a product. In terms of the materials, the stand is covered by veneer and the table is coated with dark leather.

Point-line-plane is planned to place near bed, so its size is similar to bedside table. The round edge of the table locates close to bed, and there is distance between the lamp shade and bed, which provide suitable arrangement for product and human.

5. Engineering Design 1. Because the table is coated with leather, the top tube and the under tube cannot fix the table with screws directly. Therefore, the gap between tube and table should place a rubber plate. 2. The metal base need to provide space for wire to pass. 3. The screws have different sizes in order to let the tube fixed in the right direction.

OVERVIEW Paragon Technologies is a listed company in Taiwan, specializing in the production of notebook components. The company hope to use its patent - surface sputtering technique - on LED related products. That's why we cooperate on the development of lightning management system which included remote controller, ceiling lighting etc. The main feature of the system is that there is no need for prior pull-line, because the lighting system is controlled with RF wireless completely.

ENGINEERING DEVELOPMENT 1. The shell was originally white paint and then the bottom shell became transparent plastic. 2. The location of lighting was between top and bottom shell and then changed to locate in the tail part. 3. In the beginning, the keys was only on and off function. Finally, there are “+” and “-” key to control lighting. 4. The battery originally could not be changed and then was eventually changeable. 5. There is a twenty-two grams iron piece inside the remote controller to increase its weight.

FINAL DESIGN - Brightness key: brightness adjustment - Color temperatures key: color temperatures adjustment - The “M” key : The first press, white light full brightness, the second press, yellow light full brightness, the third press, return to the original set of the brightness and color temperature state. - The “+” key : Tap the button to adjust slowly, touch the button to adjust quickly. During the brightness adjustment mode - Brightness increase progressively to a maximum of 100%. During the color temperatures adjustment mode - Color temperatures increase progressively to a maximum of 5700K in white light. - The “-“ key : Tap the button to adjust slowly, touch the button to adjust quickly. During the brightness adjustment mode - Brightness decrease progressively to a minimum of 10%. BACKGROUND At first, we focus on fruit farm industry in Taiwan. After basic information in research, we decide to pay attention to "mango" according to the following reasons: 1. Mangos are one of the first three profitable fruit in production and economy of Taiwan. 2. The surfaces of mangos are delicate, which cause more complicated planting process than other kinds of fruit. 3. In Taiwan, Yuching is the place which produces the maximum number of mangos. It is more convenient for students in Tainan to observe and interview mango farmers.

OBSERVATION AND INTERVIEW We went to observe the planting process of mango farmers, trying to realize the real practice and activities including the environments, work, behaviors and tools. On the other hand, we find some experts from schools and governments to understand more related researches. Such work takes a lot of time and energy. Therefore, we consider harvest work as an important issue. With long shears 1. Farmers should keep holding the handle of long shears all the time. If people are not careful and accidently release the handle, mangos will fall on the ground. 2. Due to long distance between farmers and fruit, it is not easy to put the fruit in specific positions.

MATERIAL

The material of the new cloth tube need to be selected. The ideal cloth should be able to slow down falling speed of mangos. Finally, Lycra fabric is the one that reach the goal with its elasticity feature.

DESIGN CONCEPT Fruitslide consists of three kinds of products –harvest shears, cart and bags. It is designed to harvest fruits high up in trees, like mangos, apples and oranges. After being cut by the harvest shears, the fruit slides down the cloth tube. The tube uses the elasticity feature of Lycra fabrics as a slowingdown tool, which avoids fruit getting hurt. Then, fruit enters the opening entrance of harvest bag. When the bag is full of fruit, farmers can close the entrance simply with strings. Fruitslide speeds up the harvest while also saving some efforts.

1 The end of harvest shears has a foam-rubber cushion to protect the falling fruit.

2 The cloth tube of harvest shears can be replaced with different size for different fruit. Farmers always plant more than one kind of fruit to increase income. They can use the same product to harvest different fruit.

Refrigerator is an important product for families. However, there are a lot of problems in fridges. According to some surveys in Taiwan, almost 60% people had found root food in fridges, letting refrigerators become places for bacteria. In addition, 90% people had discarded food because the food passed the expiration dates. Therefore, the way to manage fridge is an important topic for people.

When using the current refrigerators, people always put dried food everywhere, because some packages of dried food vary are thin, easy to store in many places. Thus, the new design includes a specific area for storing dried food. People would not put the dried food everywhere and forget them.

Product design / Dried food separation Due to the fact that dried food can be kept for longer time than other kinds of food, people tend to forget their expiration dates. The new separation can let people not only categorize food, but also rotate the switches to record the date (year and month). In order to prevent people from touching or changing the switches unintentionally, people should press the yellow button to loosen the limitation before changing rotary switches. In addition, there is a small board for people who want to write down more details.

Therefore, the sauce or can that is close to the separation means low frequency for using. People can know food’s using frequency by their locations.

The test has five interviewees. They have to use the same humidifier steps by steps. The aim of the test is to observe their actions and find the possible problems of humidifier. Conclusion / 1.The interface of the humidifier makes user feel confused. 2.The distance between buttons should be shorter, letting user arrange them more easily. 3.The design of water bottle should be changed because it always makes user spill out water. 4.The cleaning step is not intuitive for user.

TOPIC Humidifier is less common in Taiwan while it is popular in Japan, Europe and American. Due to the fact that it is always rainy in Taiwan, most of people would neglect the problem that lack humidity indoor. Less humidity causes some healthy problems like dry skin and trachea. Therefore, humidifier should be used in specific time to prevent such problems.

DESIGN CONCEPT The form of Floating Humidifier comes from the impression of water waves which is formed by line fluently. Besides this, there is neat outlet on the surface, which is simple but still detailed. On the bottom, there are two metal stands to support its body. Floating Humidifier looks like floating above table as top-down view. Compared to the other home application with strong impression, Floating Humidifier represents a soft and comfortable feeling.

We set the visual direction as soft & steady. Therefore, by selecting white paper and strawboard as the materials, the visual design shows soft and steady feelings. The main color is red with a little blue, letting the whole image having vivid representation. In terms of the three-surface card, each side has one of the three "care steps" logo, making people realize the exhibition concept clearly.
