P R A C T I C E P R O J E C T The proposal is to develop a new 'village' like housing estate at the initial target of 70-100 dwellings with shops, community centre and combined heat and power centre. The concept here is to follow the shape of the land, using the green roofs to form a 'landwave'. In aspect of space, we've been looking from modelling the village in different density with central communal garden space to make the space 'enjoyable'. with considered parking stratergies and mixed use of different house types, the concept is fully committed to deliver a green, organic and pleasent village design.

S I T E, ACC E S S A N D N E I g H B O U R S The land fronts the lane to the north, but the majority lies further south, accessed through a fairly narrow gap. There are three standard trees within the site boundary, with hedgerow with standards to the greater part of the perimeter, effectively shielding the site from view. Adjacent buildings are two storey red brick houses under slate roofs. Opposite is open grazing land. The land is slightly undulating, with a low point towards the centre of the larger parcel, where the trees stand. Access is currently via a field gate in the extreme north west corner, visible in the bottom photograph below (also giving access to STW treatment plant). Despite leading to the primary school, the road is not currently speed-restricted.

An important aspect of the location is the proximity to the Marches Mosses. The development can support the wider appeal for the nature reserve by providing some parking and amenities away from the immediate area of the Mosses but with easy access to them via the existing footpath. AN interesting aspect of the Mosses is the ground level used to be some 10m higher than it is now, reduced to its current level by drainage and peat cutting over the generations, the latter leaving a striped pattern over the surface.

FINAL DESIGN

The proposed landscape design aims to produce convivial environments for pedestrians which are pleasant to walk through, offering a variety of routes and spaces to suit different moods, from open squares to richly planted footpaths. In many places the walls and roofs of the buildings form part of the landscaping, blurring the distinction between built form and public realm. A variety of native species of grasses, shrubs and trees will be employed to enhance the biodiversity and improve habitats. Private garden will be encouraged to be both decorative gardens and food production areas.

8

The proposed layout places the more public and commercial functions to the north, near the lane, and the residential areas to the south, within the body of the site. The layout has principally been designed to create a pleasant environment for pedestrians and cyclists, with cars the secondary users.

LED Street Lighting Stratergy T h e c o n t ro l of l i g h t p o l l u t i o n a n d t h e maintenance of dark skies is paramount. We are working with specialist lighting designers to create a scheme that illuminates streets and footpaths to a the required level, forming features at key points and integrating with roofs, buildings and landscape. 14

Landscaping: Village Green The buildings arround the village green form the part of the landscape. With the green roof carries the profile, the landscape has been integrated in to the village. The roof will be designed to suit the need of the space, for instance slotted timber provides shading, public walkways or canopies.

P R A C T I C E P R O J E C T The brief here is to create a 3-bedroom house to include a 20 x 2m lap pool, in a modern building of about 100sqm living space excluding the pool. An efficient design in terms of ‘low running costs’ and ‘spaces which work’ is the only way to carry the project within a strictly controlable budget and anticipate works will cost up to £300,000 including all fees and expenses. The site north of the existing house offers privacy and views to the south of the plot.

HOUSE WITH SWIMMING POOL PONTPRENNAU, CARDIFF

A number of ways were explored to place the house on site to see the potential benefits and downsides. The most efficient way here is to place the house parallel to the north site boundary, running southwestnortheast on the site. The main entrance is facing the south east, directly into ground floor living area and the pool, and the parking space has been located to the east corner of the site. With the house sits on the southwest corner, the view towards south has been maximized.

P R A C T I C E P R O J E C T The site south of the existing livery yard and quail farm offers privacy and view to the south over grazing land and (over the hedge) to the west. The brief here is to design a house to include a first floor terrace facing the view to the west, in a modern building of about 144sqm, based on a planning approval for a log cabin. All anticipate the works will cost up to ÂŁ250,000.

Entry from the east is into the dining area leading to a double-height hallway. The single living space is divided into three zones, the living room to the west set down 300mm lower than the rest. The kitchen to the east benefits from the morning sun, a utility room off giving access to the stables and proposed garages.. Upstairs the master bedroom suite is also sited to the east to get the morning sun and now with a balcony to the south. The second sitting room doubles as a guest bedroom and also gives on to a projecting balcony facing west; the corner of the room opens up to the master bedroom suite and landing; a second guest room Sketch Elevations occupies the north east corner of the plan.

P R A C T I C E P R O J E C T The project is aim to deliver a modern extension to a former stores house. The existing extension of the house is to be replaced by a rectangular timber cladded extension with similar footprints to match the main house. An open living area is designed on the ground floor with a lot of bespoke interior features such as a unique staircase with shelves and storages. Dining room is wraped around with a corner window to maximize natural light and views to the garden.

STORES HOUSE - HOUSE EXTENSION SHROPSHIRE

P R A C T I C E P R O J E C T The building is a Victorian three-storey mid-terrace. The concept here is to alter the visual apperance of the rear and enhance the interior with a contemporary approach. The rear approach is more problematic: being the back of the building it has never tried to present a ‘public ‘ face and is where all the external drainage and ancillary accommodation is traditionally sited, together with numerous condensers in this case. The concept is to create a curvilinear lining to the stair well and reception area, serving rectilinear offices [red] and service spaces [blue], culminating in a toplit conference room feature for 12-14 on the top floor.

BATHROOM

The existing house is located at penzance, cornwall which has a fantastic view towards sea side. The brief here is to extend the bungalow to a 2 storey house, maximize the view and convert it into a holiday house. With keeping the original conservatory and existing window and door openings, an open living, kitchen and dining area has been designed to let the natural light penetrate through the house and open the view towards the sea. On the first floor, with design of pocket door, slit window and rooflights, all the bedrooms have access both to sufficient sunlight and fantastic views. In aspect of appereance, the original render on the bungalow has been kept and zinc roof and timber cladding will be used on the first floor extension.

CONTEMPORARY EX TENSION Shrewsbur y The existing house is a fairly large terrace with nice detailed bricks and arch details. The concept here is to knock the exisitng conser vator y down and replace it with a contemporar y style rear extension with decent size dining space and a lounge. the main extension will be rendered and with the standing seam roofs. North side will be fully glazed.

Re a r E x t e n s i o n

Fa r m H o u s e D e s i g n , Whitchurch This is a new house design on an open country field in Whitchurch, Shropshire. With a central double height living space, the house has been designed as a farm house style with large amount of glazing on the East and West side and oak cladding and framing details. In order to achieve the large span of the double height space, glu-lam timber beams and columns has been designed to suite the structural purposes.

25

UNDERGROUND HOUSE Shropshire With large central living spaces, creating flexibility for future owners whilst realising the needs of the current owners Bedrooms are located at the ends of the building. The main functional spaces are placed centrally in the building. All rooms are accessed via a wide corridor, and each having wide doors, making them accessible for wheelchairs. The existing piggeries buildings are simple agricultural buildings, consisting of brick walls, metal windows and a corrugated panel roof. Principle for the proposed appearance has been to retain a very simple ‘agricultural’ palette of materials – with rendered walls and fibre cement ‘Rivendale’ slates to the roofs.

NEW HOUSE DEISNG Crosemere, Shropshire With large central living spaces, creating flexibility for future owners whilst realising the needs of the current owners Bedrooms are located at the ends of the building.

EXTENSION & REFURBISHMENT Bledlow Ridge The idea here is to create a new open kitchen & dining and living area to the rear along with a new study room. With window and sliding folding doors the extension is now more thoughtfully connected with the garden. With the original characteristics of the house, new extension will be dark standing seam and timber cladded to mix the already pleasant house with contemporary elements.

MODERN REAR EXTENSION H a w L a n e , B re d l o w R i d g e The scheme generally involves minimal extensions to achieve the number of rooms and spaces mentioned in the brief. The idea here is to create a new open kitchen & dining area to the rear along with a new utility, w.c. and entrance hall The existing reception room becomes studio. Windows have been designed to make the most of the views to the garden with floor to ceiling windows and glazed doors within the new dining room extension. On the first floor we designed a large master bedroom with en-suite and balcony overlooking the garden. There are then a further four double bedrooms a family bathroom. and separate shower room. A large terrace makes the most of the views.

BRIEF MASTERPL ANNING Shropshire

The brief requires the design of a basic master plan for the site which only needs to include the number of dwellings, potential access and potential layout to explore the development potential of around 12ha of land west of Cockshutt village. In this higher density scheme around 150 dwellings are shown together with a new primary school site located to the south of Millennium Hall and utilising the existing playing field.

ECO OFFICE BUILDING DESIGN P r e e s H e a t h , W h i t c h u rc h

Appearance is of great impor tance. The buildings need to be ‘demonstrably green’ with both active and passive systems for heating, ventilation and power generation. The sectional form of both the offices and workshop are driven by optimisation for PV, natural ventilation and daylighting. The structure using Beco blocks with a SIPs panel roof, but a number of construction methods could be accommodated. Cladding to walls and roof is proposed as TATA steel’s Colour Coat Urban standing seam steel cladding with 156m2 PV panels integrated into the roof in a series of clusters; natural western red cedar cladding is proposed on the north and east elevations.

FA R M CO N V E R S I O N Pe n t r e , S h r o p s h i r e

The concept here is to convert the existing farm to a multi-functional which combined residential and commercial purposes, by demolishing the central shed and create a central communal space. Milking palour will be converted in to residence with a considerable amount of modern elements but keeping the original character of the buildings. Cow shed will be converted in to holiday lets. Farm house will be internally redesigned and refurbished.

FINAL YEAR PROJECT

SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE UNIVERSITY OF LIVERPOOL September 2014 - June 2015 Tutor: Dr. Marco Iluniano

30

Design concept: It is now nearly a hundred years since the School of Architecture building has been erected. The history behind everything is interesting. Thounsands of graduates they left the school and devoted themself into the design and construction of and made our built environment fantasticly. The school itself seems like a castle of ideas. The design concept is seeking a balance between the old and the New. The old days of prosperous should be remembered and carry on with our new generations of architecture students. Be creative, be ancient.

THIRD YEAR PROJECT

MARITIME GALLERY ALBERT DOCK, LIVERPOOL September 2014 - Jan 2015 Tutor: Ian Scullion

36

The site is by the side of The Liverpool Maritime Museum, adjacent with Liverpool’s famous “Three Graces” and The Museum of Liverpool. This project is aim to design a Maritime Gallery, which exist as a part of the Maritime Museum. The idea of the design is based on the grand history of the port of Liverpool, and inspired by the structures and shapes of Maritime objectives such as ships and compass. The gallery is inside the graving dock which was used as a repairing docks and parking area, and designed as a public gallery and multi-usage functional building. The shape is inspired by the structure of the ship, and the shape of the compass. The whole project is based on timber construction, and in particular designed to be constructed by engineered timber.

SECOND YEAR PROJECT

RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT LIVERPOOL September 2014 - Jan 2015 Tutor: Tobby Wallis

40

The site is located at the Symour st in Liverpool, with the hightest point on the North steep down to the South. The brief here is to design 15 affordable dwellings associate with a integrated commercial and community centre. Considering the size of the plot, each house sets on the edge of the site which has been slightly rised up in accordance with the contours. A green path has been designed to form a internal communal space, public gardens and semi-private front gardens throughout the whole plot instead of driveways. All parking spaces are located at the rear of the site. All house constructed with brick and block cavity wall and fitted with south facing PV panels.
