This passage sculpture was my first attempt on Rhino modeling in the Visual Communication subject. My idea was to create the spatial and visual experience for people passing through. The design compries two layers of woven sprays and a twisted contour skeleton.
WEEK1 PERSONAL PROJECT
Although the final result does not look completely the same as in my mind, It demonstrates the designing concerns. Someone argued that the circular sprays were impossible to float without frames. While, designers always imagine futures and explore virtual visions. Indeed, this explanation established only if I can skillfully use computational tools to translate data to the model layout. Moreover, This project is only a shallow practice of rhino modeling. Architecture requires deep thoughts or conceptual contributions behind the designing. Thus, i need to avoid the misapprehension of architectural design as exclusively a form-making exercise.

The building is clearly recognizable for its twisted , currying lines and interconnecting volumes. The museum is considered a shining example of contemporary architectural art. The innovative forms of this building is so impressve that reflect the influential discourse of architecture. This museum have prominent contributions on the development arrangement of the Basque city center and the urbanization. It looks exactly as we imagine a real art work – innovative, also explores the inevitability of a diversity of forces influencing any architectural designs. Therefore, this project advances architecture discourses definitely.

ANAN JAPANESE NOODLE BAR STATE OF ART OF PROJECT The geometric structure developed for the project consists of a series of distorted hexagonal cells organized by a geometric pattern on the floor and the ceiling. The cells are developed and can be inhabited in different manners. This project set cellar patterns from 2D patterns to 3D interior penetration and display cultural panels. The visual effects are created in the fullness of interiors. Lights from ceiling, background and glass panels have different visual experiences to people inside of the room. The innovation to explore spatial arrangement and its cultural architectural effects can be claimed as state of art project. An algorithm has been developed that runs as a Maya plug-in to minimize the number of angles and radi for the different panels.This project adopts the well established qualitative research methodology of grounded theory to examine the architects’ own discourse, to establish a hierarchical structure of factors of cellular-structure from this primary source of data. Thus, it could be one of the art project and advances the architecture discourse.

THE WATER CUBE
WEEK 2 CASE FOR COMPUTATIONAL DESIGN
The architects proposed a simple symbol for this building that would express water, as well as the box of bubbles. The greastest challenge was to find a structure that could uniformly fill the 3D space between the skins. That means it needs ‘a new type of frame geometry, resulting in a naturalistic sea of bubbles of varying size and shape on the cladding’. The inspirationn of starting point was the soap-film bubbles. And the computational modeling was to achieve space-filling arrangement of similar cells, of similar volumnes. In the virtual design model, the polyhedral bubble cells were arrayed in ahorizontally and vertically oriented packing. it created an appreantly ‘naturalistic, random, non-repeating and organic pattern’ on the facades.
The Water Cube project practised the celler-structure in large scale. Moreover, the processes passing from conceptual design, structural optimization and symbolizing culture. Therefore it broadens architecture discourse by interfacing the fields of designing, engineering and biology. In this case, architecture and biology share the their languages to approach the concept. Computational modeling becomes an essential tool, or media for designer to simulate the complex structures from their concept. And rethinking about the Water Cube, which kind of thought behind to push designer to seek the “non-repeating“ cells? The answer maybe exploring the nature of bubble-like structure. Actually, there are still many potentials to seek the innovations. For the same concept “bubble”. Referring Kolarevic’s statement, The cellar structure of water cube could be further developed that highlights the complexity and dynamic performances. DIGITALWATER PAVILION CARLO RATTI ASSOCIATI
CASE FOR INNOVATION The Digital Water Pavilion is a simple case for innovation though computational design. It originally sited at the entrance to EXPO 2008 in Zaragoza, and EXPO have always been ideal venues in which to promote innovation in architecture. The pavilion walls are formed of digitally controlled water curtains, with embedded sensors that signal the approach of visitors and create openings in the water to allow passing. This present building serves as a manifesto for digital and contemporary computational design techniques. It is not always easy to achieve such effects when dealing with real materials such as timber and concrete, but the reconfigurable and responsible effects that I would like to discover in the Gateway project.

Contemporary Scripting Cultures The architects generate mesmerizing outcomes systems and material from the computer-coded inputs and rules. There is a significant exchange between physical embodiment and its computational eye of creation. John Holland described that as ‘’ a lot coming from a little’’. However, there is no clear scientific definition of the concept.
Design Philosophy Criticism The project stems from investigations into potential organization at macro level. It has interests to combine the performances and expressive design approach. However, As the concept is only ‘complexity’, everything from low-level rules become high-level through self-organization. Architecture Effect The Spacing between the ribs is variable. The ribs far away is compressing and the nearby is releasing. This model maintains the densities of surfaces from different angles, If this model applied on the GATEWAY site, it could create a subspace in 3 seconds for visitors passing-by. The model itself doesnt have patterns, while visitors enjoy the surface motions, shadows and lights in pace with their own movement. The model emphasises the users’ visual experiences on the way between the urban and countryside.

PHYSICAL MODEL -CASE STUDY BANQ
PHYSICAL MODEL EXPLORATION This physical model is based on the definition of the Banq restaurant interiors. The lightweight timber has beautiful textures but the physical model is made by plywood. The plastic sheet is such a malleable material when heated, it needs to sit on a frame, when it cools down. its shape will follow the form of the frame. Thus, a wooden frame with contour of the gateway site was adopted and further experimented. The transparent material is flexible in high temporature so it cannot be cut and have perforation performances. As the transparent sheet is dull in shape, the light changing is not apparent, either. It can be bended and not to strech.

FURTHER DEVELOPMENT The Wyndham City has a short history from 1862, the population of the first centry was small untill the hot period of immigrations. The population and the city development soared from 1970s. If the concept formation moves to the abstract level, it can be claimed that the frame is a representation of population structure of Wyndham City and reflects its development in two hundred years and indicates the future. The initial project is only the practice and experiement of the material , we need to find the concept behind to support design approach. Meanwhile, the further exploration of models need highly relate to the Gateway project. It is not only to show eye-catching shape to visitors, but also to be a hieratical cultural representations of Wyndham City.
Explored effects of material deformation by observing reaction of ‘plastics’ with heat. Plastic sheets, such as vivac and propylene were tested, and they were very reactive to heat. Depending on the thickness, more curves and easier to generate with thinner sheets. Adoption of frame for the ‘plastic deformation’ to occur. Hence our group incorporated curved frame from by replicating the interior space of BANQ restaurant. Heated, soft plastic sheet was layed over the ‘frame’ and more controlled deforming occured.
With this experiment, our group was able to refine and define our design intent and approach to final design. The ‘curved frame’ that would be generated with computing technology to articulate the contour of the sitewhich is reflective of the site curves, and subtle effects can be made and achieved with parametric design. Complex design outcome could be achieved in collaborating our material experimentation with the parametric frame. Hence with our complex and rational design outcome, the final design will be one that will be visually appealing and influential to the many viewers with adoption of cultural symbol- ‘curve’ of the site.
The transparent malleable materials and overlapping pattern. these ideas will be further investigated and modified to create the most satisfying result to suit the goals of our teams as well as Wyndham city council criteria.
SPAIN PAVILION From the City of Our Parents to the City of Our Children
Spanish Pavilion is as much a “ The piece of art as it is architecture.
The idea of taking wicker, even not perhaps solely a Spanish material, shows what architecture can do when expos like this send architects off doing the unthinkable. It stands out as a building, and a story, that the visitors to the event will remember. The container of the exhibition becomes an ephemeral poetic and strongly memorable image of the creativity of Spain.

EXPO SHANGHAI SPAIN PAVILION BY EMBT 2010 Architect: Benedetta Tagliabue Highlights: Basket
RESEARCH BACKGROUND “City” is regarded as the theme of Expo 2010 Shanghai. Whilst “Inheritance” and “Innovation” are extremely significant elements in the development of modern cities, the relationship and balance between these two factors is crucial, and the Spain Pavilion seeks to achieve this.
RESEARCH CONTRIBUTION 1. This extraordinarily artistic design combines innovative design methods with state-of-the-art construction technologies. Steel tube skeletons with double layer steel structure have been used to support the spaces based on the metaphor basket shape. The external cladding is wicker woven panels, which have been standardized into four textures and three colors due to natural weathering, and steel joints have been kept to a minimum. 2. Materials: wicker weaved panels using various colors and textures are assembled on those “Baskets”. The woven cladding and glass screening achieves a level of transparency for the pavilion, which admits sufficient natural light for internal spaces. This not only highlights the notion of materials, but also allows for an incredibly beautiful form.
RESEARCH SIGNIFICANCE The Spain Pavilion won the ‘World’s Best Display Building’ award at the prestigious World Architecture Festival Awards (WAF Awards) 2010. It is widely featured in various architecture publications around the world. such as ARCHITYPE vol.04 no.04, ARCHITECTURE REVIEW, ARCHDAILY cited by Jordana and Sebastion.etc.

Combining terms of mechanism and empathy, he develops a stance in an intertwined world beyond 'closed systems.' It is a landscape of "cut saplings". Erratic net project takes a similar approach to exploring methods of generating a lightweight geotextile structure composed of modular elements.
RESEARCH CONTRIBUTION Haystack Veil project serves as a precedent for creating lattice structures and prototypes for assemblies of artificial landscapes. Hylozoic projects allows for delicate growth to take place. The vocabularily ‘responsive’ term I think has been conceptualized. They highlight the harmonious relationship between nature and human creation and rely heavily on the emotional response to nature. so the development of his computation program designing structures as a way to help us describe the nature.In Gateway project, The idea of creating topograpgy can be related with emerging theories in urbanism. DESIGN DEVELOPMENT SITE ANALYSIS
FIRST ITERATION-BANQ RESTAURANT The first iteration of Banq restaurant was to create the vertical contours that highlight the topography. However, the mono change of contour only illustrates the figurative forms.
SECOND ITERATION-FORM EXPERIMENTATION The second experiment was based on the contour development that creates meshes climbing the contour lines and three fluid forms. Topography could not be reasonable to explain why use triangles, why use that shapes of performative mesh. And in the view of the project, the form highlights on the plan view instead of having excellent eye-catching effects to the users.

NOTE The concepts of our projects are regenerative topographies and ecology. The idea of regenerative topographies can be closely relied on emerging theories in urbanism. Networks and web with voids will become more important presences to explore the metropolitan culture. It examines the urban landscape as a matrix of connective tissue. It not only stands for objects and spaces, but also the dynamic processes and events that move through them. Philip Beesley seeks 'the forces on the nature'. There is harmonious relationship between nature and human creation and rely heavily on the emotional response to nature. Thus, to approach the topographies webs with an ecological awareness, it requires the exploration of a certain sophisticated system that can bridge the urban scale development and regenerative topography on ecological purposes. That would show the symbol of technology development and micro ecological urbanization.
DESIGN ABSTRACT The design theme concerns with cladding along with parametric timber truss system which would articulate the site landscape. The use of recycled materials becomes the thread that links ecology and Wyndham urbanization. We hope to create a point of contact for the community of Wyndham and the landscape to create further emphasis on Wyndham’s greater growth as a city. The analogy between the natural context and that has been portrayed in the cladding, which is texturised to depict various ecologically recycled materials which would involve cooperation of the community at Wyndham to construct.
CLADDING ON PANELS PERSPECTIVE VIEW Timber Frame To response the effect of recycled cladding, timber-based plate elements are applied instead of steel frame. Timber is an easily workable material and the elements show a high strength to weight ratio, which makes them rational and efficient in structure frames. Triangle as a structural element has properties of folded shells regarding structural behaviors, variety of spatial and architectural form. In Gateway project, CLT triangles will be used because it is intimately linked to parametersing design and illustrate NURBS continued surfaces. The dimensions of panels refer to the factors site access, Australian transportation standards and frame structure. The largest single panel could be 2m*1.7m.
Design Criteria For this trial the parametric model was based on a known folded plate geometry used in vaulted structures. Through grasshopper and weaving bird, a wide degree of variation was allowed while maintaining the basic barrel vault form. The grasshopper controls the depth of folds, the numbers or density of plates in both transverse and longitudinal directions, the height of the arch as well as other nonuniformal factors. As the proposal project would be flat along the site landscape, the whole surface tends to be slightly smoothed and flat cover on the top. It is still largely woven and to be three dimension because of the large scale. It reaches 120 meters long and 75 meters wide on the top of the site.
Recycled Cladding The cladding should have ability to work as climate shields. The structures forming the envelope need to shed water and to provide insulating properties. There is no sealing function to the inner skin. So in this case, the recycled materials should be gulled emulsion to keep durable. And the joint would be covered by a hidden structure. This design approach results in an increased complexity since climate issues and chemical consumption.

VISUAL EFFECTS The timber frame is a three dimensional structure, which has analyzed in design criteria as mentioned previously. The light and shadow can take the physical form from parametric frame, The recycled materials create random patterns and translucent effects that acts, along with the site landscape. The textile properties of the cladding panels can change in varying degrees of colour and texture, holes, opacity and transparency, filtering both light and views and engaging in a dialogue with its surroundings. Light becomes woven in and out of the web structure. The project will primarily be viewed by motorists travelling with high speed. It is a kind of experience that would capture the light flow, and not only become visually present when in interaction with light. The weaving surfaces keep shaking in winds like butterflies that contribute to dynamic flowing. The proposal project acknowledges existing conditions that allow for unpredictable outcomes to emerge. The recycled cladding panel not only focus on creating an innovative effect design but also uses the language of ecology and environment. It allows plants take place and accumulate rain drops. It could point the road of an ecological trend in Wyndham City.

Honestly, It was a rush experiment after the failures of previous modules. The reason we pick this design direction because we can high sional and completed if do the further developments of design criteria and ecological effects. Firstly, the shapes of project could be mo topography. Secondly, it requires more reflections on the dynamic flow characteristics. The colors of cladding can verify deep and ligh on the dynamic installation of cladding joints. The spatial and functional relationship of topography surface, the frame structural syste interesting when analysing the behaviour and the interaction with outdoor climate, especially regarding adaptive skins regulating the i research of the properties of recycled materials so the utilisation of the material would be more convinced. Provide the research of the cept of ecology would be more rigorous. Evaluation of the enclosed space or covered area is of architectural and functional interest. III.1. Personal Background and Learning Objectives
The previous Studio Water highlighted the applications and imitation of modernism. As a second year student, I know some basic principles of architecture and construction but have weak basics on building concepts either applying computational tools. I only grasp AutoCAD, Sketchup and Photoshop. Rhino, Grasshopper, Indesign and Illustrator are inexperienced. For parametric design, I initially thought was a sort of not practical, impressive computational visualization. This speech appears because of my ignorance. So the in Studio Air, it needs to understand the architectural computational techniques and core principles of digital data treatment. Grasping software and technical is necessary especially for me. The essential objective is to develop the independent capacity of conceptual analysis of masters' work, and build own parametric creativity.
III.2. Learning Progress & Outcome It was quite challenging through the course but I really gain abilities from this subject. The introduction of new designing tools make me worried of falling behind. At the start of the course, I followed step by step and grasped the rhino in the first week. The first tutorial of surface contour gave rise of my interest of grasshopper. The EX lab tutorial showed the whole processes of a project but a few explanations of connections and components. I spent much time on understanding each port of the component and itself. And the weekly quiz strengthened the understanding of applying grasshopper. The study of grasshopper started with the loft surfaces ,rotate curves and simple programs . In the Cut project, the combinations of input, association and output groups can be freely adjusted to create different matrixes. Through experiments of case studies, module refined to final project, I can grasp some common grasshopper components to various different projects because components usually needed to be adjusted over and over time. Some complex projects did during the project development but were rejected by our group. In case study, I created the initial Banq Restaurant model, Hills Place model. In the final modeling, I contributed the second iteration model, site analysis, project models and detailed model. Despite the grasshopper, I used some rhino plug-in such as weaverbird, paneling tools for proposal project. Therefore, this discourse develops the skills in the media process from dynamic 3D modeling, digital fabrication to dynamic diagramming and presentation.
In the stage of cut definition development, our group developed more than 90 matrixes. . The matrix presented on p12-15 were selected from my part of works. The selection of matrixes was according to Kalay's theory"depth,breath,best first." The selected matrices are not only appealing, but have developing potentials and desired outcomeswas selectedI have learnt skills to generate a variety of design possibilities when need to introduce parametric modeling to the project.
In the first iteration of cut project, we chose the combination of Banq Restaurant contour structure for frame and the overlay perforations of Dior. At that stage, we would set experiments of materiality on transformation and perforation. we tested the deformation effects of the materials and the reaction of special plastic under heating. The process is to adopt the frame with the deformed plastic. Then our group began to refine and define our design intent and approach to final design.Complex design outcome could be achieved in collaborating our material experimentation with the parametric frame. Hence the final design will be visually appealing and influential to the many viewers with adoption of cultural symbol- ‘curve’ of the site.
The second iteration design project still kept the ‘curved frame’ that would be generated with computing technology to articulate the contour of the site. I created the basic surface that was reflective to the site curves, and the form becomes more aesthetic. After the failures of some models, we did the researches about Hylozoic Soil project by Philip Beesley. From the project, I learnt the principles of generating the geotextile structure on landscape. For our proposal project, the relationship of topography and emerging theory of urbanism will be maintained. And we would improve the structure from a 2D topography to the 3D parametric structure. Meanwhile, the ecology theme will not be influenced by the 3D forms. To highlight the ecological effects, we decided to apply recycled materials with perforation identities. Compared with the master's work, our project will be more appealing and eye-catching , we achieved the concepts of topography and ecology. Indeed, we still lack the experiences of processing the computational principles developments and data collection. Through the proposal project, I was enabled to understand basic computational principles behind varieties of geometries and data collection .
There were complex process from a digital model to a physical model. We developed the construction details from ground supports, columns and frame layer and frame to claddings. It explores the representations of parametric characteristics on the architecture models. The detailed model i designed satisfied the construction load bearing and installation of structural components. It develops the skill to highlight the relationship between air and architecture through the interrogation from design proposal to practice of physical models.
III.3. Future Work I understood the advantages and disadvantages of computation tools. I will employ these tools such as rhino grasshopper in the appreciate areas. The ability of using these tools is still at very basic level and the designing tools will keep updating so the study never stop. The entire design processes, computational programs, making case for proposals and other abilities learnt from air studio to will be utilized in my future study and designing work.
