SUN ANGLE ANALYSIS

SHADOW DIAGRAMS

Due to the tall Urbanest building nearby and the sun path running in the north, the building will be shaded for most of the time during winter whilst being exposedunder the sun in the summer, which could cause extreme temperature in the architecture. In addition, there would be a strong predominant south wind.

1.1 site analysis

The third collage is an ideal sidewalk with concrete wall perforated to triangle shapes so that light can come through. Visotors can enjoy the warm light from the sun and fresh air from the surround -ings.

According to the research, even if blind people cannot see, they tend to be more sensitive about the intensity of illumina tion. The change of light can easily give them a hint of where they are. Hence the space should be spacious and have a great contrast between light and sound. Some collages were made to show the concepts.

1.2 concept collages To create a learning environment for music students we also want to build a rehearsal room. The fourth collage shows this idea. Rehearsal room is bright and spacious with special textured wall and ceiling to increase sound absorption. Plants also have the func -tion of sound absorbing . Starting from left to right, the first collage represents the reception area where is the first area in our building. We want to keep it simple, wide and bright. The second collage shows the sensory experience center where we want the light converge to one point, with waterfall on the side as a guide. The waterfall can lead people from dark area to the bright area

MAIN FUNCTION AREAS Regular rehearsal room is located on ground oor which designed for both wind ensemble and vocal ensemble. The oor is covered with carpet for sound absorption. To maximize the music experience, the walls are covered with music tiles that controls unwanted reverberation and echo, and oor plants are placed at the corner to minimize sound diffusion.

1.6 sensory experience

There is a small café located on the right side of the building next to the entrance, it is equipped with a sliding glass door that allows people to enter the interior area (reception). Café is an open area where visitors can sense and enjoy the illumination from natural light sources as well as the fresh air and landscape.

To connect the ground oor with second oor, a ramp was designed. The ramp forms a crucial part of sensory experience as well. It starts from ground oor, extruding out to the same plane as the edge of cover, then goes back to be fully covered by the building again. There is a dramatic contrast of the brightness inside the ramp that visitors can experience traveling from dark to bright. Additionally the wall is covered with plants which is not only a part of sensory experience, but also correspond to our core conception: harmony between humans and nature.

AURORA Gauzy curtains are hung on the roof and 3D projectors are used to cast images. Visitors can sense the change of illumination and color. There are also some transparent crystal decorations that assist reflecting images and they are also touchable.

JUNGLE Thousands of LED lights are hung on the ceiling and some of them keep blinking so they look like fireflies and visitors can sense the flashing.

OCEAN Light shell shaped chimes are hung in the air. When the breeze caused by waterfall passing through them, chimes will make gentle and peaceful sound. Bubbles from the sea snail blister machines is also a part of the sensory experience.

BLOOM Wisterias and and jasmine are hung on the different part of the ceiling. The distinct smell of those two types of flowers also guides the way for visitors.

skygate

- 4 main paths and many smaller paths - 3 buildings blocking the sunlights - surrounded by university and residential areas - most of the traffic is slow - many green areas

CLIMATE AND SUNLIGHT STUDY

- overall climate in sydney is humid subtropical - shifting from mild and cool in winter to warm and hot in the summer with no extreme seasonal differences - very dry in spring - winter in central Sydney tends to be more mild where the lows rarely drop below 7.5 mainly due to proximity to the ocean - zoom in to the site area, there is strong wind from the northeast or southeast in warm months - there is relatively more mild north and northwest wind in cold months - there are also three buildings blocking both sunlight and wind around the site area

2.2 demographic

Based on the previous analysis and research, we formed our project definition. Disability is part of the human experience, it is not a condition or impairment isolated to a minority group. Anyone can experience a decline in health, and therefore experience some degree of disability at any stage in life. However, more than 4% (1831) of students in campus are experiencing physical or mental disability according to University Of Sydney Disability Action Plan. Therefore, we decided to design an integrated accommodation for all students in campus without any boundary including disabled studetns where not only a place to sleep but also a platform provides interaction communication socializing and job opportunities.

BASIC FUNCTION

STRATEGIES

FORM CONCEPTS - setback of various rooms with french windows to bringing in sun light and daylight. - use of brickwork to provide thermal envelope - deciduous plants over the place do not only provide fresh air, but also help with shading during summertime

This section aims to show the combination of our ideas and development of the building form.

CORE CONCEPT - outdoor cafe acts as the congglomeration area for tenants - existence of cafe provides job opportunities for surroundings

FINAL OUTCOME

- setbacks of blocks also allow more passage ways and balconies around rooms - mental health issues can be improved and relieved through opening up the space - these communal spaces also encourage communications and interactions between visitors - small blocks can help to maximise cross ventilation

MODEL PHOTOS

RENDERINGS

STRENGTH - located near university campus - accessible loop design by introducing ramp for circulation - atrium to bring in sufficient sunlight and green areas - combination of public and private spaces, which brings convenience WEAKNESS - slight inbalance of distribution of sunlight and daylight - tall surrounding buildings may block natural views - open atrium may cause slippery for ramp on rainy days OPPORTUNITIES - introduce more job opportunities for the unemployed in Darlington - activate the residential area by providing comprehensive health services - wind in various directions during different seasons helps ventilation and may reduce energy consumption THREATS - various climate may impede our design to achieve net-zero goal - Darlington is not growing supurb - eliminate the exsiting parking area on the site, which may cause inconvenience for people around
