Yigal Ziv noted that machines were idle while waiting for machining programs from the CAM department when he started working on software development that pertained to reducing machining times of molds and dies. Machine operators, who might be taught to create their own machining programs and so keep up with what was needed to keep their machines producing, were an underutilized resource, according to Mr. Ziv. This marked the beginning of shop floor programming for mold shops, which transformed the way they ran. This way of thinking transformed Mr. Ziv's own enterprise.
