The exhibition site is the Marshview room at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History. From there, students will expand their design concepts and scope by intervening within the museum’s spaces and collections and beyond, inviting the visitors to go outside the museum—to the salt marsh and Wing’s Island—and explore and learn from the immediate nature themselves. Serving the museum’s mission: to inspire appreciation, understanding, and stewardship of our natural environment and wildlife through discovery and learning, as well as delivering the key message: Nature is the pathway to science and invention, the exhibition will also conceive answers to these questions—Can this exhibition design itself be an example of biomimicry? Can this exhibition extend its narrative to larger conversations around climate change and function as a call for action? Can this exhibition engage with and support the local community of Cape Cod and bring lasting impacts on environmental awareness and education?

Exhibition Design - Biomimicry Trail

Location:RISD, RI Instructor:Youngjin Song

The goal of my exhibition design project is to attract as many families with kids as possible through a game-like experience. Much research about the visitors’ review and the cape cod history has been done. I have found so many exciting clues, including people’ passion on the wild nature, kids’ interest on the interaction installation in the museum, indigenous history etc. After the broad research, me, as a designer, has framed the major concept of the exhibition. The key concept is called ‘Biomimicry Path’, which is a little bit familiar with ‘Freedom Trail’ in Boston. However, biomimicry path is more like a huge board game. The floor of the exhibition room is the board, and the kids can move the tokens on it. My design is aimed at to educate kids the biomimicry knowledge through entertainment. I believe, through this exhibition design, kids are more willing to come to the museum again and again.

Lawrence Sound Digital Artist

Colson Writer

Francis Alys Conceptual Art

All of the three artists show great interest in urban space. Therefore, I conducted a sound diagram around the building-colored orange. For example, on the main street, the Washington St., two samples were collected. The first one on the left shows the daily traffic noise with the church bell ring. The church bell ring are shown as the peak of the soundwave. labelled by red dash lines. The highlight of the site is the event recorded at the parking lot. It is A quarrel between a driver and a pedestrian. This sudden surprising event can be quite attractive to all three artists. In the end, some sound sources are connected with blue lines. These blue lines become the guideline for Francis Alys’ ramp.

Here is the library collecting the African American history in Providence. In addition, the cave form comes from Colson's book, Underground Railroad. This formal strategy will give the researchers strong sense of locality. Colson is a writer laying so much emphasis on historical archive study. I believe this point would attract Colson to come here.

The second part of the whole design project is a folding paper toy. Without the help of the hard waffle, players can glue all the pieces together. Finally, players can get the fungus shape toy. Unlike the first part, these paper pieces have tags for glue. Also, it's reason why waffle is not needed here. In addition, lines are drawn on the paper surfaces. Therefore, players can easily bend the paper to get the ideal shape.

Digital Design Study - Fungus Paper Model

Location:RISD, RI Instructor:Bob Pavlik

This product design is aimed for kids and their parents. The designer would like to let the whole family have fun together to assemble the whole model. Paper pieces are drawn with animals' name. Plus, the name is in alphabet sequence so that the users can easily glue the paper pieces one after another. Kids can definitely have fun and meanwhile learn much knowledge about the nature.

Result:Serious Lack of Exhibition Space

Because of the domestic population grows and the school expansin its enrollment, the old space cannot meet the current needs. Usually, the atrium is used for exhibition. Sometimes more than 120 students and teachers gathered in this area, so crowed.

The old roof is low qualifed. Therefore, it has to be moved. To solve the space shortage, a box was inserted into the atrium. In order not to block the sunshine, the new box is located right on the top of the conference room.

Another important thing is that the atrium is too high, which failed to make people feel warm and safe. Therefore, an elegant scale should be created, which is one of the two new roof surfaces. Meanwhile, a ramp is necessary to connect the old space and the new box.

To protect from the rainful, the new ramp, or we say the bridge, needs a cover. By far, the form of two twisted surfaces come to the surface. OFFSET

The new roof shall be smooth and gentle, as a flying carpet.Rethinking the truss grid itself, hoping to create a feeling of pulling between the two old buildings in the north and south.

A New Box

Exploded Isometric The whole roof system is meant to be inserted into the atrium. The overall system consists of structure, water proof, sun shade, drainage and exhibiton funciton. From the structure perspective, a double-truss net is very practical, since the gap between the two corridors is about 24 meters. Otherwise, the middle of the net is weakest, and no doubt should it be strengthened.

At present, the population of Zhujing Town adjacent to the east of the base is relatively small, and the number of public facilities is correspondingly out of date. Since its number is far less than that of New Zone, it is estimated that the construction of the facilities takes a long time. Generally speaking, compared with Songjiang (SJ) and Jinshanwei (New Zone) areas, the town is showing a decline. Looking forward to the future and from the perspective of development, to attract the working population, the population will inevitably increase in the future. Therefore, it is necessary to build corresponding supporting public facilities in order to improve the local service level and attract more young people. Basically follow Songjiang and Jinshanwei. New forms of business should be injected and integrated into public space design. The base design should combine the advantages of "industrial heritage", make use of existing buildings, and transform and set up corresponding cultural museums, show venues, etc. And regularly organize theme exhibitions, T stage performances and other activities to improve the cultural atmosphere of the community.

District Analysis: JS still lack many resources. Combining the GIS analysis and the info offerred by local government, it is not hard to find out that JS still lack many resources. If this problem cannot be solved, the settlement around the site will turn out to fail. Therefore, the reaseach points out that a high qualifed renovation is quite important to the development of the JS district.

The GIS analysis based on a local APP called 'Da zhong dian ping', like Yeap!, with a website www.dianping.com. Gathering the information about all tbe canteens and attractions around the Shanghai, the researcher can obviously figure out that Shanghai concentrate the most resource in the city center. The fact that Shanghai is a very large city results that the city center lock too much job opptunity. In the future, the surrounding area of Shanghai should develop as satellite city so as to release the pressure in the downtown. In the other hand, JS has so many tourist attractions that JS has a protential to attract more people to settle. This page was re-drawn by myself My role in group: Conducting GIS Analysis

In addition, to spark the riverside landscape space, the roads are also arranged from south to the north. As shown in the right diagram, the main frame of the design consists of five vertical and two horizon roads. My role is to design the middle sports area between the storage room and the commerical area.

HOPPER REUSE DESIGN The old space at the bottom of the hopper is unique, so the development of commercial catering is considered. At the same time, it must also strengthen its round characteristics, and also consider it as a revolving restaurant. In the concrete transformation, bamboo template concrete hanging slabs were used to flatten the walls.

POOL REUSE DESIGN The pool used to open up storage space, but now the roof is sealed. The lower part is the yoga space of the gym, and the upper part is the outdoor trampoline. The inner space is full of circular elements, pursuing dynamic.Because the wall is the original structure, the daylighting is mostly considered by skylights and atriums.
