CONCEPT STATEMENT Cotton always symbolize soft and cozy, as the definition of home. The senior residents care most is the sense of home. The meaning of senior housing is more than the living place, is a relaxing home. I would like to bring the senior housing design with the concept of cotton and provide a sense of comfort. As the characteristic of cotton, white is the primary color. Cotton is a natural plant, the concept also conveys health and natural life status. Plants and its elements are the part of the design.

Neighborhood History The Mission Bay Redevelopment covers 303 acres of land between the San Francisco Bay and Interstate-280. The Mission Bay project involves the transformation of former rail yard into a vibrant, high-density, transit-oriented community. Mission Bay was lagoon that was occupied by year-round tidal waters and was a natural habitat. Costanoan people were the first residents in this area. Missionaries came in 1775 and built Mission Dolores for teaching the natives weaving and framing. Mission Bay was used for repair, butchery and meat production, and finishing. After the 1906 earthquake, this area became the industrial district where the shipyards, canneries, a sugar refinery and various warehouse located. Mission Bay has been redeveloped and becomes a neighborhood of luxury condominiums, high-end restaurants, and retail. Population 9,541 Residents

CONCEPT STATEMENT Dynamic is the concept for this commercial space. The definition of a dynamic interior space idea is abstract. Mission Bay is a “young“ district, due to the young residents, who may be attracted by novelty,. Dynamic symbolizes uncontrolled status because the next step or motion is unexpected. Continual change brings us continual freshness. Our client, Tony Riviera has been improving his career plan, and add new concept continually.

MARIOTTO’S HOUSE Residential Design

13 Dicha Alley, San Francisco, CA 94118 The project is to redesign the interior space of a three-stories residential building. The building located at 13 Dicha Alley, San Francisco. This residential condominium construction was built in 1955 within three units. The type of construction is Type IV, which refers to construction was built with combustible materials. The building has been owned by the Mariotto family, who live in the third-floor condominium. The owner Maria Mariotto rents the first and second-floor units to low-income groups through San Francisco Section 8 Rental Assitance Program. Neighborhood Presidio Heights

CLIENT INFO The resident who lives on the first floor is Anita, a 25 years old single lady. The natural and fresh interior living space is appropriate for her age. I would like to design the open and semi-open space in this project, for creating a bright and spacious unit and enlarge the space in visual effect. Kitchen and dining room are conterminous, and reserve seats for her invited friends. In an affordable home, energy-efficiency is the most important consideration. I would like using sustainable materials for finishing. The facilities and electrical equipment have to meet the LEED standard, like the low-flow toilet, and LED bulbs.

1

The residents of the second-floor condominium is a nuclear family, a couple and their child. Mr. and Mrs. Clark lives together with their seven-year-old daughter and they are planning to have a second child. The second-floor apartment is designed for an affordable family. The health and safety concern is necessary for the child, and I chose zero VOC paint. The study room has multi-functions. The daybed can be used as sleep space for guests, and it is storage.

2

The house owner Maria Mariotto lives with her 16-year old daughter Simona and her 75-year old father, Frank. Maria needs a home office for herself and two employees. Every family member has their individual bedroom. Frank’s bathroom must follow A.D.A guidelines. Maria and her daughter share one large bathroom, and Maria can access the bathroom from her bedroom. The office of the third floor should be a closed room and adjacent to the employees using area, like employee using the bathroom.

CONCEPT STATEMENT The inspiration of the first-floor unit design comes from the Joshua Tree National Park, a desert park and located in Southeastern California. The park has more than 800 different species of plants. The charming tropical plants are the greatest inspiration. Creating a comfortable living space with natural colors and lines.

CONCEPT STATEMENT The design of the third floor is inspired by the Full Moon. Marriott’s family live on the third floor, the Mariotto is a three-generation extended family. The owner Maria Mariotto lives with her daughter and her father. The full moon means family gathering reunion. The meaning is appropriate for this three-generation family, and I hope the Mariotto family will enjoy the environment. The full moon concept is not a specific design style, that it would be flexible for different generation person.
