How can creative repair strategies help us reconsider or “disrupt existing waste streams? Broken or imperfect conditions are opportunities for renewal if we can change our attitudes. This project for the design of a facility for repair of donated goods aims to inspire and support a culture that values innovative strategies for renewal. Informed by research into material health, sustainable systems, t h e c u l t u re o f re p a i r, and the unique context o f t h e c o m m u n i t y, t h e proposal identifies objects or conditions in our surroundings that are damaged, unusable, or thought to be imperfectto develop unique strategies to reuse and reanimate m a t e r i a l s and objects back into our designed environment with new value. The p r o p o s a l a l s o considers the important role of interaction among the people in the community to further support the idea about renewal and social sustainability.

Disrupt

The project began with identifying a repair strategy for a found, broken hanger which was transformed into something new by inserting a piece of offcut wood to connect the broken pieces. Offcuts are leftover parts that are usually not considered necessary or useful. By exposing and amplifying the broken part, the repair embraces the “imper fection”. From there, “of fcuts” are conceived conceptually as a strategy for renewal and materially as the primary building component.

For such a dynamic family, the house is integrated with contemporar y living style and traditional Japanese culture.
