1968 I was 20 when I bought my first vinyl, a bootleg live gig of The Doors. At that time I was still in college and sharing a Brooklyn apartment with some friends. We would sit around and space out to the albums we bought. Then one day, I had this wacked-out idea to hold my own music festival. They thought I was nuts. “Watch me”, I said.
I went round to clubs, basement shows, getting people on board. I had no venue, no cash, but I didn’t care. I was going to make this work. Finally, after scrounging up enough cash and with 5 bands on the roster, I was ready. We xeroxed 500 flyers, (Kinko’s must’ve been mad as hell at us) and handed them out at the clubs in NYC The following night, Sarah and I broke into the rooftop of our apartment building and set up equipment for the show. We had bedsheets with the festival name painted on them, beer bottle candles for lights... it looked great. The bands played for a crowd of maybe a hundred people, but for us, it was our first big break.

Q Queens is one of the “five boroughs of New York City, and is the main venue for Shout!. As students in the age of cultural revolution, Queens used to be a hotbed for ideas and youths who wanted their voice to be heard. Many musicians congregated in the basements and clubs of the neighbourhood, hoping to be scouted by big record companies, or
just looking for another like-minded rocker. The streets of Queens and Central Park, places that played a huge part in forming SHOUT!, will play host to a variety of musicians, both local and international.

lues-rock is a hybrid musical genre combining bluesy improvisations over the 12-bar blues and extended boogie jams with rock and roll styles. The core of the blues rock sound is created by the electric guitar, piano, bass guitar and drum kit, with the electric guitar usually amplified through a tube guitar amplifier, giving it an overdriven character. The style began to develop

in the mid-1960s in Britain and the United States. UK Bands, such as The Rolling Stones and The Animals and American bands such as the Butterfield Blues Band and the Siegel–Schwall Band, experimented with music from the older American bluesmen, like Albert King, Howlin’ Wolf, Robert Johnson, Jimmy Reed, Muddy Waters, and B.B. King. While the early blues rock bands “attempted to play long, involved improvisations which were commonplace on jazz records”, by the 1970s, blues rock got heavier and more riff-based. By the “early ‘70s, the lines between blues rock and hard rock were barely visible”, as
