Ins: yilanzhao12 FB: Yilan Zhao Yilan Zhao was born in 1996. With the background study of science in high school, in China. She decided to start her overseas study in University of New South Wales. 1 year of Design Foundation study in UNSW introduced her a world created by geometries and colors. Later, 3 years of study in the bachelor of environment, major in architecture, at the University of Melbourne, has contributed to her passion for architecture. Through the bachelor study, she found that architecture is a complex of art and science, nature and humanity, rationality and sensibility. These characters attract her to keep exploring architecture in the future. She believes that the way we build is a reflection of the way we live. She interests in how people living in our society and how architecture influences on it. She supposes her future lies in community architecture which emphasizes the involvement of local people in the social and physical development of the environment in which they live. She is hoping to improve herself in the next level of study and to be ready for the new challenges in the future career.

Going to Heaven! Emily Dickinson I don’t know when Pray do not ask me how! Indeed I’m too astonished To think of answering you! Going to Heaven! How dim it sounds! And yet it will be done As sure as ocks go home at night Unto the Shepherd’s arm! Perhaps you’re going too! Who knows? If you should get there rst Save just a little space for me Close to the two I lost The smallest “Robe” will t me And just a bit of “Crown” For you know we do not mind our dress When we are going home I’m glad I don’t believe it For it would stop my breath And I’d like to look a little more At such a curious Earth! I’m glad they did believe it Whom I have never found Since the mighty Autumn afternoon I left them in the ground.

T h e a r c h i t e c t u re p r o v i d e s u n ce r t a i n a n d confused feeling, in order to create an atmosphere between reality and fantasy as the feeling mentioned in the poem. This space closes the distance between you and the one you missing. The concrete massings identify the spaces, moreover, they represent the solemn and seriousness. The grid frame represents the breaker as the reality. The cooperation between massing and frame leads visitors to travel between reality and fantasy.

the SPECIFIC SITE The site I chose is located on the south corner of Herring Island, facing to the Alexandra Ave, main Yarra, and the Punt Dock. It has a quieter acoustics condition with less city noise and beautiful birds sound. The plants as natural s he l te r p ro vid e t h e se n se of ambiguous between architecture and site.

This is a project for proposing relationships between the ground surface, below ground, and above ground. The site for this project is Herring Island, in Yarra River, South Yarra. As the very first design studio in the Bachelor degree, this project requires to make a composition using the research results from the three 2-week exercises and engage with architectural issues: in this case, those of secrete.

STUDLEY PARK BOATHOUSE

-STUDIO WATER2017 / Semester 2/Individual project

Studying from Portugal architect Alvaro Siza's design philosophy. The project requires to design a boathouse and to replace the existing one nearby Yarra River in the Studley Park. It utilized and exploded Siza’s schemes of conceptual balance, ow, units to the whole, frame view and the experience ow.

Th e de sign triesd to reduce the damage to the site on both plants and landform. The tall gum trees were regarded as the barrier to hide the architecture. Therefore, the site condition relieved the contrast between concrete mass and natural surrounding. This project attempted to integrate the existing path and context to maximize the efficiency of complex functions and to respond to the site.

VIEW FRAMING

Basing on the function, the program was designed as a transition from public to private space, and seperated into three blocks: boathouse, cafe, and restaurant. The form refered to the basic geometry to carve into the sculptural shape. The various arrangement of skin provides different experience through the journey of the building. Three blocks encircled the site to create the main gathering plaza which facing to the river. Instead of the wield bush area, the plaza provided users a more formal and isolated environment. restaurant

Studio Air exploded the theoretical transition in architecture design. It supported the method of design that utilizes the parametric language to generate the options in the design process. With the topic of the Animal-Enlighten, we were required to design any kind of project basing on the animal we got. After the number of researches about the feral pig, the method to control the pest inspired us to design this moveable, exible infrastructure - Our-ASIS.

SITE ANALYSIS

The site is nearby the Rashell Tr ain St ati o n. I t h a s obvi ou s distinguishm ent of land use. Nearby the river, it still keeps the natural and wild condition. The spot we chose is isolated from th e ur ban e n vi ron me n t and surrounded by bush area. And human states at the site such as cycling and reading nearby water body happen during the daytime. Therefore, we aimed to maintain the site condition without any damage to create a climate-response and humandriven project.

SITE SPOT

Morphometry refers to the quantitative analysis of form, a concept that encompasses size and shape. Morphometric analyses are commonly performed on the developmental changes in form. We aimed to inverse this analysis formula starting from the data (superimposition) to vector the formnding computation.

ITERATIONS SELECTION CRITERIA Linear: the mean ux of the form, is it changing naturally and smoothly? Is there reasonable circulation? Relationship: the relationship between each point is the basis of form- nding. Volume: is there any positive or negative value? What is the organization of these volumes? Is their form diverse?

3D-PRINT PROTOTYPE

3D printing provides a high quality of physical communication. It creates nice detailing and solve the complex form in the realization.

INFLATION

PLAN 1: 100

To humanize the project, it requires to be detachable and easy-moveable. We decided to use the inflation method in order to reduce the weight, but keep the plasticity. The generous volume and low cost of ‘pneumatic living’ easily epitomized the ideal of total comfort for all. Before this, the taut skin and the ‘stickiness’ of the PVC material meant an unrelaxed form. Pneumatic comfort was an apt simulation to impose a monumental presence to the intimacy of the user or experience.

CONCEPTUAL AGENDA This design intents to create an environment to provide energy by stimulation to the students. The school is like an organism who has its own ‘biorhythm’, which

5

is the schedule (timetable) in the school. These schedules manipulate people’s daily activities. These people are like cells in the organism, the movement of them create a life for the school. And school provides ‘nutrition’ or ‘energy’ to the cells. The connection between them is the flow of the school ---- the blood vessel. B
