Background

About Hida-Furukawa

Hida is located in Gifu Prefecture, in the center of the Japanese archipelago. Narrow valleys stretch between countless steep mountains, dotted with villages. 92.5% of its area is mountainous forest, surrounded by great mountains. {1}

Background

Forestry of Hida

Hiking Trail in Hida

When the hardwood forests formerly used for furniture in 1960s were felled, to compensate for the postwar housing shortage, it became national policy to plant new fast-growing conifers. ... . The result has been that now, the Japanese mountains are overrun with excessive quantities of Japanese cedar, which should already have been felled. Failure to properly care for artificially reforested trees causes forests to become sites of neglect and waste, which in turn has a deleterious effect on rivers and seas.{2}

After the Industrial Revolution, the relationship between nature, human life and artifice changed. The woods in Hida give people an expression of natural resourse, but it turns out to be artifice. 4

Working Logic

The Pecking Logic

Both temperature and humidity influence the pecking pattern.

6

The Weather Mode

Each woodpecker peck on their own rhythem.

The Detection Mode

When the motion sensor detect the movement of people or animal, it will stop pecking after sending an urgent alarm to other woodpeckes.

The Frenzy Mode

When every motion sensor was triggered, all the woodpecker will make high-quency pecking noise to show their frenzy mood.

Working Mechanism

8

WoodPecker is a sound installation that creates an immersive auditory experience through the use of interconnected, environment-sensing mechanical percussive creatures. It seeks to excavate new perspectives on the existing soundscapes of the forest while instilling a playful yet insistent reminder of the presence of the artificial & the manmade, even in seemingly the most natural of places.

The wood that parallel to the grain is sensitive to the moisture. During the hot dry days, the wing of the woodpecker will close.

As the air getting wet, the wing of the woodpecker will open (because of the character of the wood) in order to amplify the pecking sound.
