About Me
I am Yiming, currently a third-year undergraduate architecture student at Northeastern University, from Urumqi, China. I am interested in the combination of design and history in architecture and how the problem-solving aspect can be complemented with the artistic aspect of architecture. I am familiar with the 2D and 3D design/modeling applications such as adobe suite and rhino. I am also a beginner/amateur photographer.

Urban Walk-up Housing
4
The urban walk-up housing project is located in northeastern university. The housing project is designed for graduate students who have a diverse living condition and preferences as well as possible public tenants.
The housing project is a repetition of a typical module. The typical module consists of a front/street and back side. The street side apartments are larger and more traditional 2-bedroom units. The back units are double floored. They are linked with a closed corridor to the adjacent unit and can be combined into a larger unit featuring 4 or more bedrooms. This accommodates living conditions with multiple students or with family members.

There are 4 different unit types within a single module. The Ground floor units feature a garden on the street side and a small yard on the backside that can be accessed by a bamboo walkway. Balconies are featured on the second-floor units and outdoor terraces are featured on the 3rd and 4th floor street side units.

The massing of the unit is a rectangle with lightwell cutouts on both ends of the unit. The left units are a half level higher to match the egress stairs as well as to create separation of the balconies for privacy reasons. First floor units and upper floor bedrooms also feature skylights to help light the apartment naturally as the modules are fairly close to surrounding buildings.

Chinatown pavilion is a temporary installation located next to Chin Park. The pavilion is designed to be a public lounge/library. The structure would be installed from June to September.
The pavilion is separated into two distinctive sections via ground height. The front/street side serves public functions by providing seating area, an open space that can be adapted to accommodate multiple activities. The back side serves more private functions as it contains bookshelves, book-return area, and a dedicated reading bench.

The massing of the pavilion is inspired from traditional Chinese architecture and garden. The inverse slanted roof, circular doorway, and geometric cutouts for the windows are all simplified and modernized adaptations of traditional architecture elements.

The Chinatown Library is a public library located in leather district, across from the Chinatown gate. The library consists of trapezoidal structures stacking into each other, creating a central courtyard that is open to the street side. The more public programs such as the lobby are located on the lower floor as they are less susceptible to noise. The central courtyard is also open to the highway as public activities would take place there. The library programs are located on the second and third floor away from the highway side to maintain low noise levels. An accessible green roof is featured. The offices and managerial programs are located in a separate column as the library.

Twisting the rectangles to achieve a more dynamic form
Enlarging the rectangles into trapaziod to gain more space internally, as well as create more variations in form.
Blending the stacked areas to make the building more coherent, added green roof feature.

The stacking structures are a loose indication of program separation. They intersect into each other at various points, creating multiple double height spaces to imply the transition of programs as well as floors.
