Good Living Through Design

Icsid(International Council of Societies of Industrial

Mayor's Preface

Last year, Taipei broke new ground when it hosted the 2011 World Design Expo. More than 3,000 designers from 60 countries joined, making it not only the largest design exhibition in Taiwan's history, but also the largest design meeting the world has ever seen. To demonstrate the strength of design in Taiwan, we combined the island's abundant intrinsic culture with its dynamic industrial, interior and graphic design.

Design in Taipei is explosive and strong. Between the years 2004 and 2012, the city was behind Taiwan's winning of 1,516 awards from four of the world's most prominent design award programs, including America's IDEA, Japan's Good Design Award, and iF and red dot of Germany. These outstanding achievements show that the golden age of design in Taipei has arrived.

It is our hope to share this accomplishment. Therefore on June 29, a day recognized by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid) as World Industrial Design Day, Taipei announced to the world that it will seek designation as the World Design Capital for 2016. Using the concept "Design is People" as inspiration, Taipei will launch a series of urban improvement projects to advance the city's collective, lifestyle and aesthetic movements.

Starting from February, I have served as convener of Taipei City Government task forces focused on nine major areas: urban outlook, attention to health, environmental sustainability, cultural creativity, the Taipei image, human resources, a safe city, economy of design and infrastructure. These task forces will bring greater perspective to the past, present and future development of this city. In addition, we will create flagship projects based on the five core policies of 2016 WDC Taipei: an intelligent lifestyle, ecological conservation, healthy living, urban renewal and lifestyle industries. The city will recruit top design talents to join these projects while encouraging participation by residents.

To demonstrate Taipei's strong design strengths, along with the critical role played by the city's various designers, we carefully planned the international publication "Design Taipei." For the issue, we selected the theme "Taipei Design Keywords" choosing various characteristics that describe to the world the uniqueness and diversity of the city's design environment. A dozen key aspects give readers a chance to understand and love Taipei design while seeing how it encourages prosperity and health of life in the city.

I believe that design can make the city more beautiful, healthy and prosperous. Count on Taipei's designers to continue to produce exciting products to share with the city and world.

Culture Thrives in Guling Street Area

Guling Street rose to prominence due to its literary reputation, and today old bookshops continue to attract customers. Intermingled among these bookshops are several famed stamp collecting organizations, including Mrs. Kong's stamp and coin society and Chenglong stamp society. Each November these instill additional culture into the Guling Street Books and Creative Bazaar. The bazaar encompasses a range of literary styles, from traditional fare at the old book stands to independent publications, including magazines and community releases. Designs of the products at each

stand adhere to different literary themes. The street is also closed to traffic for an open-air book fest that awakens new life in the street by bringing the community closer. It is a breath of fresh air to the people who visit. Guling Street together with the nearby Tongan Street, Xiamen Street and Chongqing South Road form the Chengnan Street zone. Leading institutions include the National Taiwan Arts Education Center and Guling Street AvantGarde Theatre. For years they have passed down literary and theatre life, letting art continue circulating through the streets.

A Business District Forms Around a Legendary Temple in Monga

03

Another historical section of Wanhua is Bopiliao, a rare collection of streets that originated during the Qing dynasty. Today many buildings remain that have great historical significance, including the Lu A-chang doctors' dormitory, the Fenhsiang bathing area and the Changshou tea house. To inject

Wanhua, commonly called "Monga," is based around Longshan Temple. From this spiritual center sprung old neighborhoods and streets, which today pack in centuries of history. Shops gathered in specialty clusters create a lively street culture. Xiyuan Road is home to stores that specialize in Buddhist relics while Lane 224 of Xichang Street is the best place for herbs and grass teas. Meanwhile Dali Street and the nearby Taipei Costume and Culture Center are turning the area into a cultural development center for Chinese and international costume arts.

Designers Create Green Homes in Minsheng Community

6

Along the orderly streets of the Minsheng community are a variety of tall trees and bushes that have replaced unsightly electric poles. Building this shaded green path helped inspire local shops to go green. For example, there is Hsiao Senlin, an environmentally minded restaurant that uses organic ingredients and shows the influence of a green community. Such an environment is favored by designers, many of whom launched studios in their apartments. There are architects, industrial artists and fashion designers who feel a

connection to the greenery that lines the street simply by looking out their windows. A dialogue emerges between people and nature at businesses like Irving Huang Architects and Hoomia, along with the community's spatial design firms. Another community feature are the more than 30 parks interspersed among residential zones. Residents relax in these green spaces and visitors sip on a cup of coffee while enjoying the city’s unique green feel.

The District That Never Sleeps in Ximending

Ximending is a mecca for Taipei's youth and an important location for cultural and creative activities. Nowhere is this more apparent than at the Red House Market for Artists & Designers, a focal point of local street culture that shows the limitless power of the area's design. When Ximending's walking zone was planned, comfort was the main consideration. Streets formed based on

a variety of themes, from the culture of American street and movie street to the daring tattoo street and graffiti street. Each overflows with history. Large-scale activities also take place in the district, showing the character and passion of the streets. Whether it is the unique furnishings of the shops and product lines they offer or the street performers, experimentation is bold and innovative.

The streets of Zhongshan and Shuanglian are a fascinating place where culture and creativity take shape. Major thoroughfares are home to international fashion houses, five-star hotels and department stores. Taking a stroll along these street can feel like a walk down a fashion runway. A more modest feeling pervades the lanes and alleys, where designer brands, creative items and art publications are available. Notable shops and cafes include PPAPER, Garden City, Booday and Lovely Taiwan. Each has its own spirit that can be seen from the signboards, entryways and interior design. Many of these businesses even have their own publications to share their philosophy and ideas with customers. Buildings in the area are as diverse as the shops that inhabit them, each capturing the eye of passersby. Architectural creations and designs are on display at the Chung Shan Creative Hub, a space where many design students are given the first thing to exhibit. To see avant-garde, interactive or multimedia displays there is the Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei an excellent stage for independent short film artists. Meanwhile a walk along the park under the elevated metro line reveals fascinating clusters of art installations. It is obvious pursuit of the creative arts thrives. The setting influences the surrounding shops, which work hard to express their creative side.

Dazzling items abound on the carpets and tables that line the square, including an extraordinary collection of secondhand items. Each represents the support Tianmu gives to creative activities, a feeling that quietly became part of the local culture. An underlying feature of Tianmu is the foreign influence that pervaded it at an early stage of development. The influence helped build the exciting street landscape. Tianmu is located in a spring belt. To accommodate the terrain, parks were included in the urban planning and green spaces dot residential areas. Artists tend to be particular about quality of life and many were drawn to Tianmu's natural beauty. This led institutions such as the Carol Young Clay Art Workshop and the Children's Art Museum in Taipei to take 14 root here.

There is an elegance and style to the streets mentioned in shorthand as Kang-QingLong. The "Qing" stands for Qinglong Street, where ancient Japanese buildings are still strewn throughout the neighborhood. The best known of these is "Qingtian 76," or Qingtian Street Lane 7 No. 6. It complements the Sotokufu (governorgeneral) forestry department dormitories on Lishui Street to demonstrate the design and aesthetics of Japanese colonial era architecture. Meanwhile Yongkang and Longquan streets are lined with shops where culture and creativity thrive. These have spawned many workshops

and hybrid businesses run by artists and designers with their own individual style. The residents and tourists who come to these shops support these creative workers in their pursuits, giving them an outlet for their original character to shine. Some businesses carry on traditional Chinese culture, such as Islanders Studio or Caves Gallery; others have a Japanese style, like James Kitchen or Showacho Antique Shop; and some seem like they hail from a small European village, such as La Petite Perle or Earth Tree. Customers are charmed by the alley culture of these businesses. .

Peaceful coexistence with nature is part of mankind's destiny and a source of prosperity. An important part of a designer's creativity and skill lies in selecting economic materials that extend the life of the product. Design makes sustainability part of life by finding ways to reuse materials and considering the full life cycle of products, down to when they are finally discarded. It plays an important role in architectural techniques and changing behavior. Design also expands environmental action and lets people live in harmony with natural ecology, creating a healthy and sustainable living environment.

Taipei 101 lost its title as the world's tallest building, but its commitment to the environment remains. It made this clear when seeking recognition under the LEED for Existing Buildings, Operation & Maintenance system. Following rigorous review and evaluation, in July 2011 Taipei 101 finally became the tallest building and the largest scale building to ever achieve LEED platinum certification. Master architect C. Y. Lee and his team were behind the design and construction of Taipei 101. The "101" in the name not only refers to the number of floors but also determination to exceed what is considered the best. Beginning in the construction phase, the team integrated environmental protection ideas into its plan. These included double-layered insulated glass walls, a trash reduction and transport system, a reclaimed water system, energy management and control mechanisms, and a building management system.

The most difficult challenge to achieving platinum certification was the building was already in use. Detailed improvements had to be made to a set foundation, and negotiations were needed with tenants. Over more than two years seven major green projects were enacted in areas such as saving energy, recycling, improving the environment and increasing green area. Big changes included achieving precise management of the internal temperature and entirely relying on recycled rainwater for irrigation. Small changes included inspecting all electric and hygiene equipment, such as the toilets, faucets and energy-saving light fixtures. The result was a greener building that could reduce the urban heat island effect, protect the environment and give people a chance to breathe. LEED's requirements brought greater balance to the building, making it suitable for humans to occupy. Taipei 101 and the city could take a deep breath together while living in harmony with the world.

It was awarded diamond certification after passing the Ministry of the Interior's nine-indicators for green buildings, and was named one of the 25 most beautiful libraries in the world by the U.S. website Flavorwire.com. Architect Kuo Ying-Chao used the elegance of green building techniques to revisit the relationship between reading and life. Beitou Library was not always the magnificent structure it is today. Originally a sea sand building, it was dismantled then rebuilt using wood and steel. These materials are recyclable, so when the building reaches the end of its lifespan, they can be reused. Photovoltaic panels on the roof generate electricity while large terraces and vertical wood screens reduce the

internal thermal radiation, lowering the building's electricity needs. Rainwater first nourishes the lawn and greenery then it is diverted to rainwater recycling troughs. It is used to flush toilets or for irrigation to reduce waste. From the outside the library looks like a large elevated treehouse. Visitors can enjoy the natural scenery while they relax with a good book. They derive great joy from a peaceful, blessed setting so close to home.

BBC reported on the building, and groups that have visited include the U.S. Environmental Protection Administration, the World Green Building Council and Singapore's AGC. Each gave high praise. Design of the memorial building was overseen by architect Mark Ongg. His design incorporated energy conservation measures, such as sunlight control, indoor green corridors, a rain recycling system and low-emissivity glass. from New York featured it on an episode of Megastructures, and it won a 2010 environmental protection award from "Financial Times." EcoArk was part of the reason Arthur Huang, the MiniWiz cofounder and a designer by trade, was invited into New York City's prestigious Venture Fellow program. MiniWiz focuses on innovations in sustainability and green energy. It gives added value to discarded items by adhering to the "3Rs" of environmental protection: reduce, reuse and recycle, principles that were on display in the Taipei Pavilion it built for the 2011 World Design Expo. The main exterior wall was constructed from plastic bottle bricks while interior walls were made by stacking recycled wine bottles. On both the exterior and interior LED lights were deployed to create unique visual effects. During construction very few chemical adhesives were used, which made it easier to recycle all building materials after the expo ended. The spirit of sustainability could continue without end. Besides its large-scale buildings, MiniWiz brings sustainability to everyday life. Using "re" as a theme, the design team launched the "Re-Wine" program to turn used wine bottles into lighting fixtures.

9

Discarded rice husks and post-consumer thermoplastics are combined to form a material called Polliber. This is used as a case for the wine, and it later can be easily joined with the empty wine bottle to form a smart lighting fixture. Multiple cases can even be stacked to form a wall. Brilliant ideas such as these allow designers to emphasize harmony between humans and the natural environment, moving away from the waste that plagues many development projects.

Chinese tea culture is highly refined. Before tea can even be tasted, it must be grown, processed and sold. Design is hidden in each step, from the arrangement of tea trees to the roasting equipment used to process the leaves, the packaging to hold them and the implements to steep and consume the drink. Practicality and aesthetics must be adhered to at each step, a formality that turned tea drinking from a normal part of everyday life into a ceremony. Tea tasting is a fashionable event containing an intangible cultural essence. Realizing the importance of tea, National Palace Museum and the design company JIA collaborated to create the string tea set. Their inspiration came from Southern Song Dynasty ceramic vessels that were originally used to hold alcohol but were modified to form a classical tea set. These simple implements are a joy to behold. They bring elegance and fashion to the tea ceremony, revisiting a tradition that has existed for centuries and demonstrating the beauty of ancient Chinese culture.

has found a way to blend traditional and bubble tea on its menu. Youths who come for this modern drink also can enjoy the flower arrangements, paintings, snacks and household utensils which compose the teahouse setting. The five senses are entertained in an environment that demonstrates the limitless possibilities of tea. It is a reflection of how culture and aesthetics respond to the modern lifestyle. Design is everywhere, and its effect is apparent even when contemplating the last few grains of rice in a bowl. Taiwanese have a deep impression of the company Green in Hand, the Design for Asia Award winner which offers its rice in a variety of packages, from simple paper bags to Hakka flower print cloth. The elegant texture of these wrappings and accompanying farm stories offer consumers an account of life in the countryside. Other well-known Taiwanese designs such as tofu chair and tofu stool that are created by Studio DOMO put a modern twist on eastern culture and show how wonderful city life the designers aspire to beautiful lifestyle and city.

Another company to capitalize on traditional tea, but with a more modern twist, is Zenique. Its teapot travel set contains a pair of cups of decreasing size that can be stored inside the tea pot, much like the Russian Matryoshka dolls. The ingenious idea was awarded a 2012 iF product design award. Beyond traditional Chinese tea there is Taiwanese bubble tea, a widely popular beverage. Design remains important for the elements common to all bubble tea shops, and it is vital among the tea houses that have expanded past their usual offerings to include bubble tea. One example is Chun Shui Tang, which

The ingenuity of design lies in converting seemingly ordinary elements to create a stunning new object. In recent years, design that has local characteristics and culture as the starting point has become fashionable in Taiwan and the power of design that has been displayed has been impressive. Chou Yu-Jui's bamboo stool and bubble sofa are examples of this kind of design. The former was made in cooperation with craftsmen Su Su-Ren and Chen Gao-Ming and made use of Taiwan's excellent bamboo and high level of craft skill. A three-legged stool that displayed the course of growth of a single bamboo tube was designed; the 2010 work, the bubble sofa, merged weaving skill and fashion; 999 bamboo woven balls were stacked to make a comfortable sofa that can be adjusted to change the size. The design made outstanding use of the lightness, air permeability, environmentalism and flexibility of bamboo.

interpret eastern thinking, creating a simple style with eastern poetic feeling. The theme of the work was "crescent moon," cleverly expressed on the handles and the nonsymmetrical cup stands, symbolizing that life waxes and wanes like the moon. When design trends become lifestyles, the styling of the home is no longer limited to the building and interior design, through home use items, the designer creates a life design style with a difference. Taiwanese brand JIA took part in the 2012 Frankfurt show, communicating with the world with a new eastern design language that intertwined different materials and had mature design lines. Their steaming basket and string pattern teaset and others series of works used clay and wood together cleverly to display warmth and softness, expressing a direct and pure modern elegance and giving household utensils new expressions.

The Gixia Group, led by regular winner of international design awards, Hsieh Rong-Ya, is best able to imagine future life in their designs and ponder on the details of present life to use design to solve problems. One fine example of their work is Ultra-light multi-material wrench, developed together with the Metals Research Institute, that won the 2011 red dot gold award. It is 40-50% lighter than a traditional spanner is light, easy to carry and use. Imagination gives design more possibilities. In particular, Taipei, with its diverse culture needs to realize design imagination and break the shackles of old and new culture, area structure and natural environment and build a distinctive Taipei future life. Fortunately Taipei is a city that isn’t very large but the imagination of its designers is boundless and professional designers are constantly giving the city new vitality.

As a design center of the Chinese world Taipei has become an "outstanding student" in Asia in terms of creativity. As well as seeing Taipei's own design style in the city, design energy from around the world flows together here. Taipei is also always near top of the list when invitations are issued to cities for international design exhibitions. This city is never absent from the highest level international design events. Taipei continually holds major design exhibitions to absorb the essence of global design and, with innovative new design thinking and style, displays endless design passion that invigorates the city's aesthetic cells. Most notable so far was the Taipei World Design Expo 2011 the scope of which included the architecture, spatial, graphic, product and craft design areas;it brought 1,200 contemporary designers to the city and exhibited over 6,000 works by young, middle and older generation designers. This was not only the biggest design event ever held in Taipei it was the biggest in the world. Long-established Taiwan Designers' Week is an event staged voluntarily by private groups and has become a launching pad for new Taiwanese designers. Overseas design teams are also invited to take part to add an international flavor and provide an opportunity to create sparks of creativity through facilitating exchange between designers from Taiwan and different parts of the world. Participation in major international design events affirms Taipei's design power. Taipei designers take part in design events in Asia, Europe, North America; as well as providing an opportunity for observation and exchange, they are also a chance for commercial matching. The Milan International Furniture Show in Milan Design Week this year saw Han Gallery take six of its designers, Rock Wang,Chou Yu-Jui,Ho Chung-Tang, Wu Pili,Liao Po-Ching and Gina Hsu, to show their works at this heavyweight international design event and they won a lot of praise; also, Han Gallery was the only design company from the Chinese world to be invited to the Helsinki Design Exhibition in Finland, again putting it in the international spotlight.

The spirit of "Fresh Taiwan" has been used since this year's Tokyo Giftex World and will be the theme for future participation in the London Design Festival, the Hong Kong Inno Design Tech Expo, and the Shanghai Interior Lifestyle etc. In the past, at the London Design Festival Taiwan has mainly participated in 100% Design London which is relatively commercial in character and, last year, products by 12 design companies including Biaugust DECO and NDD etc attracted a lot of interest from international buyers. Mecca for architects the world over, the Venice International Architecture Biennial Exhibition, merges in the essence of art and has a deep influence on culture. The independent Taiwan pavilion always becomes a talking point because it is able to reflect problems of our times. Leading architects such as CY Lee and Kris Yao made their name at the exhibition. At the 13th exhibition Taiwan's cardboard pavilion had the theme "Geographical enlightenment", echoing the exhibition theme "common foundation". The works of architects Liao Wei-li and Lin Youhan, "Tour of Taiwan's geography" and "Amnesic home" used a method that intertwined the real and the imaginary to display the characteristics of Taiwan's geography. The London Festival of Architecture is the biggest architectural feast in the UK. This year Chinese Cultural University (CCU) and National Cheng-kung University teams took part in the Focus Team Exhibition after fighting off the challenge of other submissions. Addressing the issue of environmental protection in Taipei, CCU put forward the idea of turning elevated roads into urban green corridors and turning Shezi Island into a natural energy generating waterside tourist park. Turning attention to the most important design exhibition in north America, the New York International Contemporary Furniture Fair, Haoshi Design of Taipei's swallow sculptures arranged to form a wall clock and the balloon concept based lamp won praise from the media, while the Second Life wooden ring made from wood chips of the Moissue brand, also from Taipei, attracted a lot of attention. At this year's Shenzhen Cultural and Creative Industry Expo that produced output value of RMB 673.5 billion, the Taiwan Cultural and Creative Hall brought together 99 cultural and creative companies and had fine products, handicraft and intellectual development exhibition areas as well as a museum digital added value area. The creative combination of technology and culture led to many on-site enquiries and will also be a model for study by designers in other countries. Taipei design has developed its own unique flavor. No-one can ignore Taipei's creative design power. Today, Taipei officially announces to the world that it stands on the peak of world design.

Design has thrived in recent years even amidst the global economic depression and is regarded as the best way to boost sale. Whether in terms of international competition, or competition between enterprises to sell products, design is a powerful tool for adding value. To go beyond the “large volume, low price” red ocean strategy of traditional industry design companies need to use a different way of thinking when designing products to satisfy the preferences of different customers, set coordinates in the blue ocean and win business opportunities.

Taipei has many talented people in the cultural arena and cultural connotations from different countries, levels and dimensions; it is also an open city that welcomes new products and ideas so Taipei's design companies are always able to let creativity ferment without constraint, allowing a wide variety of products that are the envy of the world to be designed. The pronounced characteristics and creative functionality of products designed by Taipei design companies fully express the diverse creative energy and precise sensitivity with regards to the market that underpin the city's own "Taipei style" precision design. This unique nose for the market has allowed Taipei design to carve out a niche in the international design world. Taking PEGA D&E, designers of Taipei Main Station's "Travel & Infromation System", as an example, the company integrated transport, scenic spot and other information in the system, using images and a visual guide to design a User Friendly interface;the smooth and easy to use interface and considerate page design make this electronic information system easier to use than others. Gearlab, a company that also design from the perspective of the customer, specializes in the design of outdoor and sports products, through the experience of the head designers or their friends, improving the details of existing products; for example, by redesigning the bicycle mud guard and chain the problem

of riders getting splattered with mud on rainy days has been solved;their bike also has a storage space and also fashionable lines. They have transformed existing bicycle designs and made their bike a sports products that combines function and fashionable feel, and also realizing the spirit of "Life in design, design in life."

No chemical adhesives were used in this environmental and attractive expo pavilion.Nova Design, a company that designs electronics, medical, home and transport products,

As well as innovative product design, the creative markets that have sprung up all over Taipei are places to realize dreams. 44 South Village, for example, lies at the heart of the city's commercial and financial district, Xinyi District. It is an old veterans' dependent community that was transformed into an art and cultural zone that is a new comprehensive art and cultural venue that combines food and drink, exhibitions, performance and sales of various cultural and creative products. Simple Market, held every weekend, sells various kinds of creative toy and second hand items, attracting large numbers of people and injecting new life into the old community.Different to 44 South Village but just as interesting, is the Red House Creative Market that has a pronounced art and cultural flavor. It has different themes each month, such as the freak out beast Chinese New Year market, sports market, Italian market etc, that sell the products

In the digital mobile age small size, light weight and ease of carrying are the objectives pursued and these were the starting points of ASUSTeK Computer Inc. which has developed the "ASUS P1 LED projector" suitable for use by business people when attending business meetings outside their office. The main color is black and it has a fashionable feel. Design emphasizes speed, ease of use and super intuitive operation. It weighs just 415g, ideal for carrying around by business people. This product won the affirmation of being awarded a 2012 German iF Award gold award. Multi award winning Qisda creative design center has brought out the QPS-213 portable photo scanner this year; it weighs just 390g and can be operated away from a computer. All that are needed are a USB or an SD memory card and then A4 documents, photos, negatives and slides can be scanned. Also, the "BE Light" reading light, developed in cooperation with BenQ, won the German red dot

and iF awards in 2012. The design is classical, the aluminum light body merging eastern and western styles and having a modern feel. The two piece arms, inspired by paper folding, can be adjusted to the suitable height and angle. The "spot to plane" LED light source distributes light evenly and achieves optimum affect. Also, an LED light, Nova Design's "FlexLite" overturns conventional thinking and is a light that is made completely from silicon and is bend durable. The AC LED crystals inside eliminate the energy consumption used to convert AC to DC current and thus have an environmental effect. PEGA Design & Engineering has cleverly used the characteristics of LED to design an intuitive power supply controller. The time is set by writing the desired power supply activation time with a marker pen in the power supply activation time setting area. When the set time arrives the power supply will be activated automatically allowing people who are not at home for long periods to control their power supply at home.

With the aim of reusing the idle space, the park has become a place for cultural and creative community exchange and incubation. In cooperation with the Taiwan Design Center, the permanent exhibition Taiwan Design Museum was established, displaying the Deigned in Taiwan products that have won awards at home and overseas, conveying the latest design innovation ideas in Taiwan.

Taipei World Design Expo 2011 made a grand appearance in Songshan Cultural and Creative Park in 2011; with Design at the Edges as the theme, it brought together 1,200 designers from 32 countries and over 6,000 designs. With Where Happiness is as the theme, the exhibition space was divided into industrial, graphic and interior design etc. areas; the Interdisciplinary Creative Works on Asia's Cultural Creativity Exhibition-Ingenuity follows Nature, which had a work by calligraphy master Dong Yang-Tze at its core, was also held on the site and was a perfect complement for this international design feast. 4

The site of today's Huashan 1914 was once the Taipei Liquor Factory of the Taiwan Tobacco and Wine Monopoly Bureau. After the old factory was left idle for 10 years, figures from the art and cultural communities came together and campaigned successfully for the reuse of the old factory and it has since become an important base for creativity. Taiwan Designers' Week, once held at Huashan 1914, was launched by private individuals and has since grown to be Taiwan's biggest and most conceptually complete design event. The Red Brick Area of Huashan has creative boutiques, each business having its own characteristics, such as Ayoi Taiwan Indigenous Specialty Boutique. To preserve the unique artistic style of Taiwan's indigenous people, fine products, 100% designed and made by members of Taiwan's indigenous tribes, are displayed, including the Q edition aboriginal doll cell phone bag from La-ge-si Aboriginal Culture Space, ceramic bead strings from the Bayi Studio of Jialan Village, and leather goods from Caiyi Leather Craving Studio; all profits are used to help indigenous people start up business and improve their lives. The 1914 Connection combines the brands of Taiwanese designers and Islanders Studio and is Taiwan's first designers'gift specialty store.

6

The biennial Simple Life Festival brings together musicians, creators, local farmers and fashion designers to together put the "Do what you like to do, give what you like to do value" life philosophy into practice. Huashan has been transformed from a liquor factory into a space for avant garde art and also hosts design and pop music events. The park also has a green space for the leisure use of local residents and visitors and advocates national life aesthetics. As for annual festivals, the Huashan Living Arts Festival, Huashan Talent Show and Golden Melody Music Festival etc. are held, each time affirming Huashan's cultural value and its irreplaceability. It is also the best stage on which Taiwan can let the world see its boundless art and cultural energy.

The Factory 16 was established in the Red House's Cruciform Building, bringing together the creative energy of many designers, and it houses designer businesses such Brique and Younga. It is the hotspot for cultural and creative brands in Taiwan and regularly

holds aesthetics lectures, art and cultural activities, themed parties and has developed into an incubator for cultural and creative businesses, giving creative people hope and allowing them to achieve their dreams. In 2010 the City Art Block was established in the Taipei Cinema Park and street art and youth culture thrived here. The 2nd Back Street Cultural Festival gave street culture a voice and old borders continually overlap here. A volume transfer agreement and private donation turned this old Chinese herb and medicine shop into a creative lifestyle base on Dihua Street. Creative workers share space and creativity while drawing on contributions from young artists. They also take inspiration from the neighboring streets by interacting closely with local residents and businesses.

Economic changes led this former bottling factory for the Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Bureau to be abandoned. Years later it reopened as an electronic music performance stage. Film directors often choose it as a site for shooting, and the large warehouse provides a workshop for digital artists. Its unrestricted nature inspires artists to create bold new works.

It is part of the unique Taipingding commercial zone of Dadaocheng and is near historical landmarks such as Daan Hospital, which was operated by the Japanese resistance martyr Chiang Wei-Shui, along with distribution centers for a cultural publishing house and the "Taiwan Minpao" newspaper. Its new theme is experimental filming. Tsai I-Shan, the gold craftswoman, uses previously lost techniques to create gold embossings. Her work was displayed at the Talente design exhibition in Munich, Germany, and it won a silver medal in the jewelry category at the 2nd National Metal Craft Competition. Tsai's I-Shan 13 brand adopts ancient gold craft techniques while drawing inspiration from aesthetic experiences in Tsai's life and her imagination. Using a style similar to handmade illustrations, Tsai taps

and carves the gold, transforming this malleable metal into works of art. The unique style of Tsai's work derives from her hands. She meticulously fashions the metal in a long, complicated process, giving it a detailed texture. Tsai has her own view of jewelry's function - even when it is not worn, Tsai feels the beauty of the pieces lets them serve as decorative art. Such an idea makes gold design a part of spatial design.

Johan Ku, a designer born and raised in Taipei, faced tragedy at a young age when his parents passed away. Unwilling to succumb to the cruelty of fate, Ku was determined to find new life by creating his own style of fashion. Hard work eventually led to his "Emotional Sculpture" series, which earned Ku an avant-garde award at a fashion competition held by the American arts and design institute Gen Art. Gu emphasizes the 3D nature of his fashion sculptures. He got a big break when he became the first Taiwanese fashion designer to have his work displayed at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, thereby gaining the attention of the famed French choreographer Mourad Merzouki. In 2012, the pair combined fashion design and choreography in the work "YO GEE TI." By integrating embroidery into Merzouki's choreography, they brought a new language to dance. It was another example of how Gu's interpretations of fashion can shock the international world of art.

Aaron Nieh, best known for his cover designs on albums and books, is an expert at overthrowing visual stereotypes. He is well-versed in the new language of international design, a skill he applies to rewriting pop culture in Taiwan. Nieh has designed hundreds of album and book covers. His work on the book "A Stroll Through the Paradoxes of Paris" won the Golden Butterfly Award for best cover design, and he won the 21st Golden Melody Award for best album packaging for the Yoga Lin album "Senses Around." Internationally Nieh has been honored by Germany's red dot and iF awards, and his works were recorded in Hesign's "Small Studios," Asia Pacific Design's yearbook and writings by the Type Director Club. When working on a new album cover, Nieh listens closely to the music, understanding its auditory meaning so he can interpret a corresponding visual image. Nieh sets the tone for much of Taiwan's pop culture

Kea, whose original name is Tsai Meng-Ta, is one of Taiwan's leading graffiti artists and an accomplished sculptor. He examines conflict in the humor found between contrasting elements, such as darkness and the saccharine, in the process criticizing the imagery of today's society. The result is an original and ambiguous study of the aesthetics found in conflict. Kea works in many mediums. His trendy T-shirts, template graffiti and figurines accurately reflect the aesthetic taste of today's youth. A high point in Kea's career came in 2011 when he was invited to attend the 54th Venice Biennale. Kea was grouped with world renowned artists such as Takashi Murakami, Yoshitomo Nara and Yayoi Kusama. The exhibit they shared was considered the best of the biennale.

Activity is important for Xiao in his work. When he reaches a roadblock in the design process, Xiao heads to the flea market or cycles along the riverside to regain his creative streak. To challenge his own ideas of design, Xiao has examined thousands of CD and album covers from around the world. Xiao has deep affection for Taiwan and turns the feelings he has for its land and people into visual images. His work is infectious and encouraging. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the album "Story Island," a work dedicated to the Typhoon Morakot disaster and winner of a 2010 red dot award. He also won the best album packaging design award at the 2012 U.S. Independent Music Awards for his work on the album "After 75 Years."

Jennifer Tsai, the Proad Identity chairwoman, is known for designing the packaging for Kinmen's Maestro Wu knives and Taisun's Emperor Love tea line. Since 2008 she has served as a judge for Germany's iF and red dot competitions, though the road to such a high level was not easy. Tsai discovered her passion for design while already in school. It was not her major, but she decided to launch a company anyway, a plunge that saw clients refuse to pay their debts and employees reduced to a low of two. Obstacles such as these came and went, but Tsai's ambition never changed and her energy never dissipated. Tsai has been on the design world stage and interacted with some of the best designers alive. She has witnessed the ambition and competitiveness of related companies in Japan and Korea and wants the world to see that Taiwan shares the same level of urgency and sense of mission. Upon entering the Proad Identity office, the white walls reveal nothing of the international awards bestowed on the company, nor are winning pieces prominently displayed. Tsai said: "I didn't hang them on purpose. If they are hung from the wall, we will be confined by past products. I want to continue to compete so more Taiwanese design can be seen."

Chen Wen-Long, the chairman of Nova Design, is the first person to build an intelligent management platform for a design company and the first person of Chinese descent to serve as a judge for Germany's iF design awards. Chen's start came with the scooter manufacturer SYM. Three years after joining SYM, in 1988, Chen proposed that the company's design department 4 become independent, an idea that received strong support from Chairman Huang Shi-Hui. Nova Design Co. was established, representing a commitment to innovation and the strength of the design team's aspirations. A quarter of a century later, Nova has advanced from being an original design manufacturer to the realm of own brand and manufacturing. The client base has expanded from domestic to international, and products range from Tatung electric rice cookers to Midea 3-kilogram single washing machines. Nova not only has won international awards but also gained the trust of consumers. Currently Nova has expanded to six worldwide locations and become the largest independent industrial design consultancy in the Greater China region. "Whether we succeed or fail," Chen said, "each time we can guarantee our greatest effort." Chen understands what must be done and insists on doing it well. His business maxim is: "Do the right things right!"

Jennifer Tsai of Proad gave high praise to Hsieh Jung-Ya, the CEO of Gixia Group. "It is probably a special characteristic of us fifth generation (creative workers)," Hsieh said. "We value responsibility and emphasize sense of duty." Hsieh, originally a designer for Acer computers, left to form his own company. He tackled both the design and business ends of operations. In 2003 Hsieh won his first iF award for helping Charder Electronic, the electric scale OEM, design a Air Cushioned Infant Scale. The honor brought recognition to Hsieh in the international world of design. By 2012 Tsai had amassed more than 90 awards and honors, which he uses as inspiration to reach even greater heights. Hsieh wants to lead his team in producing better products so the world can gain a deeper understanding of design in Taiwan. In this age, when the aesthetic economy is growing, Hsieh Jung-Ya deeply believes that design can predict future dreams and change the way that people live. Creativity Designing a Scenic City

IDEAL

"Taipei is in a basin, and has mountains and rivers; from wherever you look, beyond the buildings mountains can be seen; if the water can be brought in we will have a unique Taipei" said Chang Ching-Hwa, principal architect of Bio Architecture Formosona whose Pavilion of Dreams, Pavilion of Future and Angel Life Pavilion designs stunned people at the Taipei International Flora Expo said, hitting the nail on the head. She believes that cities will become larger and more concentrated and that how to cities suitable for living in is matter worthy of deep thought. In her mind, the primary task of design is maintaining a balance with nature. Taipei's mountains and rivers give it limitless development space and it is these mountains and rivers that bring biodiversity. The future development of Taipei should be thought of in terms of biodiversity. Director of the Chinese Society of Interior Designers, Wang YuLin, believes that the role of water is more important. He believe that the future design of Taipei should focus on development river culture, offering an example: it takes around one hour to travel from Danshui to the Xinyi District by MRT;if the rivers around Taipei were regulated better and, in addition to the existing riverbank sports facilities, entertainment facilities were added, the rivers would be given economic value and could also be considered for use as substitute highways. "Making the relationship between people and rivers closer is something we should do. What we can do is use the power of design to change the appearance of the city."

Less is More Subtraction City Design

Any city's evolution is closely connected to its cultural and development course. Taipei's development began with water and Wang thinks that, if the water around Taipei can be used better, the city will take on a totally different appearance. As Chang Ching-Hwa said, design is about making the environment better. Taipei's unique 3D space can change how people think. She said, instead of blindly talking about construction, why not go the other way and demolish all unnessary construction, returning to society's and people's requirements? In her mind design is essentially the process of solving problems. She gave an example: sheet metal buildings have always been blight on the cityscape. "Why don't we just hold a metal sheet building competition and make metal sheet buildings a unique party of the city's scenery?" she asked. Wang YuLin said that designers from overseas have indeed used some elements from metal sheet buildings to make their buildings more distinctive. "Building has always been a kind of integration and design is about meeting people needs" Chang Ching-Hwa said.

A Low Carbon City that Embraces Nature

5

Also taking human needs as the starting point are Gearlab's Henry Chang and Cesare Sun, two young men who returned from overseas. The two set up a business because both loved outdoor activities and not only found it difficult to find others with similar interests, they also found good gear hard to come by and,as people with needs themselves, they thought "since we can design why not do it ourselves?" said Henry Chang of their reason for starting up a business. Their first work was a canoe paddle. Most of the paddles at the time were from Europe and had a large paddle face that gave speed but required a lot of effort. They returned to the paddles used in the place canoes were invented: Greenland: small face, small force, not giving as much speed as the larger faced paddle but allowing the user to keep paddling for a long time and thus get more fun out of canoeing. After acquiring a better understanding of the lives of Taipei people, Gearlab's designs moved closer to life. Henry Chang saw from the fact that the number of people engaging in various outdoor activities has increased substantially that Taipei people longed to do outdoor activities and the changes in life needs gave Gearlab various

kinds of design inspiration. The bicycle that is to be released at the end of the year is another design based in life. Chang said of the burgeoning popularity of cycling in the last few years in Taiwan "Every weakened the Riverside Boulevard has traffic jams!," graphically describing the popularity of cycling. As lifestyles change, Chang says "We have some friends who really want to make their bicycle their everyday means of transport but we found that the types of bikes that are popular now aren't suited to everyday use." They have nowhere to store things, your trousers will be soaked and mud covered when it rains and older bikes also lack a fashionable feel. In the design of the new Gearlab bicycle the mud guard and chain link have made a return and there is also a space for storing things; mother can ride to the market, office workers can wear their office clothes when they ride to work. It is functional and fashionable and reflects the Gearlab design idea "Life in design and design in life"

Drinking tea from a cup with BenQ Design carved on the bottom, Manfred Wang, BenQ-AUO Group head of design, said that design is a kind of "conditional art." It is a process that allows people's expectations to be realized and the life aesthetics that design expresses also must resonate with its target group.

Design TAIPEI

Design Produces Meaning from Expectation

Wang has led the BenQ-AUO Group design team as it has amassed 300 design awards including the Oscar of the design world, the iF award. Wang pointed out that Taipei City is a brand; what personality do we want to give it? What kind of life experience will it give? Design is producing meaning from these expectations in terms of form and content. In terms of Taipei's living space, Wang thinks that future design for life will bring in sunlight, air and water through design in the best possible way, giving these elements value, stressing modernization and mechanization, rather than just blindly pursuing form. Wang thinks that the living sphere in Taipei is richly diverse and it has solid infrastructure, however, perhaps "We shouldn't just complete something, we should do it well!" He suggested that the information system could be joined more closely to people's lives and bus stops signs used not just to provide information about when the bus will arrive, information about local life can also be provided, using IT technology to improve the lives of citizens and making Taipei a city of smart.

10

Chang Ching-Hwa believes that all that is needed is to do every detail well, stress the value of craftsmens' skilled handiwork and care about sunlight and ventilation and whether every window always brings in air and sunlight, saying "Good design is design that borrows force to apply force . " She believes that building more roads and bridges isn't a good way to solve the urban transport problem. She used the example of Europe, where a large number of highways were built in earlier years and the result was more vehicles, pollution and traffic congestion. Finland has now built the "Super highway for Bicycles." Chang, the architect of Beitou Library, one of the 10 most beautiful libraries in the world, says that design is a kind of integration process, the aim of which is to bring change. Using Taipei City's water is a good way to bring change. Her thinking matches that of Wang Yulin who believes that rivers can provide an alternative means of transport. As for Henry Chang, he believes that if designs are good then more Taipei people will be willing to ride their bikes on the streets every day and thus the number of cars will naturally be reduced and there will be less congestion and exhaust emissions… Future Taipei City: Look up and see the mountains, look down and see rivers, the mountains and rivers bringing different seasons and different organisms, cycle paths playing an important transportation role in the city and the rivers offering an alternative means of transport, all around is a living space with distinctive features and good life functions.

They treat the city like a living lab to find inspiration for research and innovation. Design and technology come together in the city, which is starting a new kind of industrial revolution.

Promoting industrial clusters is an important part of the industrial design strategy in Taipei. The city uses a flexible approach to urban spaces to build a complete industrial chain for designers, thereby letting commercial design flourish.

Design thinking has infiltrated every aspect of development in Taipei. From traditional industries to manufacturing and services, the work of designers is apparent. In Taipei industrial synergy is not only a slogan but also a call to action!

R e c e n t l y Ta i p e i d e s i g n e r s have performed superbly at major design competitions. By combining outstanding talent with a strong passion for design, they spread their ideas and build a strong foundation for design in the city.

Taipei's most valuable creative resource is its people. Design is a "human" industry that cannot exist without people, which means a city must have an advanced system for developing new professionals.

Designers in Taipei share a common goal of pursuing the ideal. As Taipei strives to create a prescient, exemplary lifestyle, it must rely on civilization building from its designers.
