There are 11 creative zones in Taipei centered on prominent streets. The urban landscape they form along with the storefronts that line their streets and alleys provide the foundation of design in the city. Included are: 1. Guling Street, where bookworms linger in traditional bookshops; 2. Monga, where Longshan Temple, Herb Alley and Bopiliao historic district combine traditional and modern culture; 3.Minsheng community, where orderly, tree-lined streets suit the area's green and organic tendencies; 4. Ximending, a favorite place for youths to gather, where movie, tattoo and graffiti streets show the creative power of Taipei's youths; 5. Zhongshan and Shuanglian, where culture and fashion meet, and international brands along with local shops compete side-by-side; 6. Tianmu, where the square hosts a special market filled with incredible secondhand goods while east and west meet in the diverse streets. There is also: 7. Eastern Taipei, where it adds amazing news installations to the streets, Songshan Cultural and Creative Park serves as an important exhibition and activity center for design, and Eslite Bookstore along with VVG Something show the area's diversity; 8. the National Palace Museum area, where the museum brings a new approach to culture and the simple design of the Soochow University campus reveals the fresh and innovative side of creativity in the city; 9. WenRawTing Block, where creativity is inspired among educated youths in colorful independent bookstores and performance stages for independent music; 10. Yongkang, Qinglong and Longquan streets, where culture and creativity allow business to thrive; and 11. Beitou, where architecture from different ethnic groups shows the area's diverse history and hot springs reveal its unique natural resources.

Design allows the environment to retain its natural vitality and lets buildings exist in harmony with their surroundings, so residents can better express their strengths. In Taipei the impressive achievements of architects and the buildings they created are waiting to be discovered. One such building is the Beitou Branch of Taipei Public Library, designed by architect Kuo Ying-chao. It was awarded diamond certification after passing the Ministry of the Interior's nine-indicators for green buildings, and the U.S. website Flavorwire.com named it one of the 25 most beautiful libraries in the world. There is also Taipei 101, which was designed by architect C. Y. Lee. It showed its commitment to the environment by seeking recognition under the LEED for Existing Buildings, Operation & Maintenance system. After a rigorous evaluation process, in July 2011 Taipei 101 became the tallest and the largest scale building to achieve LEED platinum certification. Meanwhile on the south side of Renai Road is Fubon Fu An Memorial Building, which links with the green band that runs along Renai to form a complete ecological system. Design of the building was meticulously planned, which was recognized by the National Golden Awards for Architecture with first place honors in its excellent construction category along with a special award for green building. During the 2010 Taipei Flora Expo visitors had the chance to see the FE EcoArk, created by the local company MiniWiz. Around 1.5 million bottles were recycled and turned into bricks to create this 100-percent made in Taiwan structure that was dubbed the world’s first carbon neutral building. A National Geographic team from New York featured it on an episode of Megastructures, and it won a 2010 environmental protection award from "Financial Times." EcoArk was part of the reason Arthur Huang, the MiniWiz cofounder and a designer by trade, was invited into New York City's prestigious Venture Fellow program.

茶栽堂」茶壺旅行組成功詮釋收納的巧 思，可把兩個杯子都收進壺裡，於 2012 年德國「iF Design Award」中榮獲產品設 計大獎。「掌生穀粒」從碗底的米粒出發， 運用牛皮紙袋或客家花布，把在地食材的 風土人情完美呈現，並因此奪得 2011 亞 洲最具影響力設計大獎。再如達摩工坊以 書法為底蘊的豆腐椅、豆腐凳等等，東方 圖騰加上現代的創意符號，莫不深刻展現 設計者對美好城市生活的種種企望。

Many of the lifestyle surprises found in Taipei come directly from the creativity of the city's designers. For example the studio InBlooom uses printed cloth to give new meaning to everyday products, and FamilyMart commissioned DEM Inc. to produce a series of fun dolls based on Buddhist figures. The creative passion never rests in Taipei, which is apparent at Eslite Bookstore, a Taipei landmark where design activities and local brands become part of residents' lives. Classic tea ceremonies are given a modern twist by companies such as JIA, which collaborated with the National Palace Museum to create its string tea set. Inspiration came from Southern Song Dynasty ceramic vessels that held alcohol but were modified to fit modern tastes. Also capitalizing on the tea market is Zenique, which created a teapot travel set with two cups that can be stored insi de, an ingenious idea that was awarded a 2012 iF product design award. Meanwhile the company Green in Hand offers its rice in a variety of packages, from simple paper bags to Hakka flower print cloth. These
give consumers an account of life in the countryside and won a 2011 Design for Asia Award. Other well-known Taiwanese designs such as a tofu chair and tofu stool are created by Studio DOMO. They put a modern twist on eastern culture and show how designers aspire toward a more beautiful lifestyle and city.

臺北的創造力根源於無遠弗屆的想像力， 悠長的傳統文化與融會的國際潮流，都 成了激發設計師創意的推手，更直接反 映在新奇的設計物品上，除了呈現顛覆 的創新思維，精彩的故事性，更增添了 設計的玩味。 設計的巧思就在於能轉化看似平常的元 素，創造出倍感驚奇的新物件，近來吹起 以在地特色及文化為始點的設計，設計力 表現讓人驚艷。出自於周育潤之手的「竹 凳」即是代表之一，將竹製、編織工藝納 入設計產品之中，凸顯傳統素材與現代設 計的完美結合。 此外，東方傳統的技藝，也是萌發設計想 像的源頭，新銳設計師陳彥廷便將此詮釋 的相當動人，採用剪紙藝術製作的「前刀 cutting」 影 片 及「Letter Cutting」 海 報， 斬獲海外諸多獎項；發揚茶道的設計，讓 品茶成為別有滋味的享受，例如知本設計 與臺華窯合作的「白居月」茶組、JIA 品 家推出的蒸鍋蒸籠和弦紋茶組等系列，皆 是運用想像力讓設計有了全新的姿態。

The source of Taipei's ingenuity lies in its abundant imagination. Rich traditional culture combines with international trends to inspire designers, a characteristic directly reflected in the novel products they produce. Besides turning tradition on its head these designers are adept at telling stories, which brings a playfulness to their work. An important skill in design is the ability to infuse everyday objects with wonder. Recently design has also focused on using local elements and culture as a starting point to arouse even more emotions in users. These ideas are represented in the work of designer Chou Yu-Jui, who combined traditional Chinese bamboo and weaving techniques with modern design to produce his bamboo stool. Another design who gains inspiration from traditional eastern techniques is Chen Yan-Ting. He used paper cutting art to produce his award-winning "Cutting" video and "Letter Cutting" poster. Design also brings new feeling to tea culture, which is evident in the Bai Ju Yue tea set produced by PROAD Identity and Tai-Hwa Pottery along with the steamer set and string tea set produced by JIA Inc. Each relied on the imagination to give design a brand new look.

身為華人世界設計匯流中心的臺北，已然 成為亞洲創意表現的資優生。藉由大型設 計展覽的舉辦，不斷吸收全球設計精華， 並自創嶄新設計思維。從集結海內外的 當代設計名家的「2011 臺北世界設計大 展」，和國內外新銳設計師發跡地的「臺 灣設計師週」，還有如 IKEA 在臺首次舉 辦的「IKEA PS Home 居家設計展」等， 都讓臺北獨有的設計爆發力燃燒，並引領 國際的風尚潮流。

Taipei, a creative hub for designers of Chinese descent, is one of the most innovative cities in Asia. It not only attracts some of the world's best designers by hosting international exhibitions but also has developed its own brand of design. Such creativity from local and foreign designers is on display at major events like the 2011 Taipei World Design Expo, Taiwan Designers'Week and the IKEA PS Home. Taipei designers also attend international events to demonstrate their capabilities. This year Taipei is using the theme "Fresh Taiwan" at the Maison & Objet Paris, its fifth time joining the French furniture design fair. Since 2000 Taipei designers have participated in the Venice Architecture Biennial. Each time at Venice spectators are impressed with the Taiwan Pavilion, which previously
displayed works by architectural masters such as C. Y. Lee and Kris Yao. This year the local design companies Haoshi Design and Moissue will represent Taiwan at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair, or ICFF, North America's premier showcase for contemporary design. Meanwhile the Taiwan Cultural and Creativity Pavilion was well received by visitors to the Shenzhen Cultural and Creative Industry Expo. By participating in these international exhibitions and events, Taipei is announcing to the world its formidable design capabilities.

This progress can be seen in intelligent transportation, where details such as intelligent bus stop signs and a parking guidance system have been added to the city's transportation network. At Taipei Main Station PEGA Design & Engineering installed a transit information system that uses images and a universal design interface to produce maps that satisfy user needs. It also developed a Light Fairy cycling windbreaker that integrates LED lights into a water resistant windbreaker. The outfit makes cyclists more visible at night and can be rolled up into a flashlight shape. LiteOn Technology Corporation used the theme "Tech it Easy" to show its commitment to improving transportation. Its contributions include a steering wheel that can reduce drunk driving and LED traffic lights that can save energy. Nova Design meanwhile used an optical silicon light-guide film to produce its FlexLite LED lighting. It can be rolled up, is durable and users can cut it into any shape. The AC LED illumination, based on chip embedded technology, reduces energy use compared to regular DC LED lights, making it environmentally friendly.

Industrial clusters are an important part of industrial design policy in Taipei. They can be seen at the Huashan 1914 Creative Park, a former factory of the Taiwan Tobacco and Wine Monopoly Bureau that lay abandoned for a decade before flourishing again through a series of design activities. The park hosts Taiwan Designers'Week, which has become the largest, most developed design event in the city. It is also home to creative workshops that show diverse design styles, and every two years it hosts the Simple Life urban festival. Musicians, artists, local farmers and fashion designers gather for the festival to advance their philosophy of "doing what you like while giving what you like value." International design can be seen at the Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, an important window to the design world. The park was designated an urban landmark, and the city decided to give it new life by turning it into a place for cultural and creative groups to gather and grow. In cooperation with the Taiwan Design Center, the permanent Taiwan Design Pavilion was established in the park. It displays award-winning Taiwan products to promote the latest innovations in Taiwan design. Meanwhile local culture and art exist in harmony at Treasure Hill Artist Village. The area originally developed as retired soldiers and migrants from other cities and counties formed a settlement in the hills. The setting and residents contributed to a unique cultural landscape. Later the village was formally registered as Taipei's first historical settlement in 2004, and it even won a Taipei Urban Landscape Award. Throughout the city visitors also can stumble upon urban regeneration stations, or URS, which are likened to urban acupuncture. They are part of an open movement that involves building a diverse city network and using existing space for innovative urban renewal projects. Taipei's urban regeneration stations include URS 127 Design Gallery, URS 27 Huashan Grand Green, URS21 Chung Shan Creative Hub, URS 13 Nangang URS, URS 44 Dadaocheng Story House, URS 155 Cooking Together, URS27W Film Range, and URS 89-6 Urban Core Creative Center (which was used through March 2012). They provide unique stages for designers to develop their trade.

A designer known for displaying such skill is Aaron Nieh, who creates cover designs for albums and books. Nieh is well-versed in the new language of international design, which he uses to rewrite pop culture in Taiwan. In particular his work on the book "A Stroll Through the Paradoxes of Paris" won the Golden Butterfly Award for best cover design. Another designer who uses fashionable design to weave new life into his work is Johan Ku. His talent was displayed in the "Emotional Sculpture" series, which earned Ku an avant-garde award at a fashion competition held by the American arts and design institute Gen Art. Gu emphasizes the 3D nature of his fashion sculptures, a tendency that gained the attention of the famed French choreographer Mourad Merzouki. For Merzouki's 2012 work "YO GEE Ti" Gu
served as the costume designer, bringing fashion and dance together. Meanwhile the gold craftswoman Tsai I-Shan uses her skilled hands, sense of aesthetics and previously lost techniques to create gold embossings. Her work was displayed at the Talente design exhibition in Munich, Germany, and it won a silver medal in the jewelry category at the 2nd National Metal Craft Competition. Tsai draws inspiration from aesthetic experiences in her life and her imagination. Using a style similar to handmade illustrations, Tsai taps and carves the gold, transforming this malleable metal into works of art. Finally there is Xiao Qing-Yang, the fourtime Grammy nominee and a well-known Taiwanese designer. He is the first person of Chinese descent to be nominated for best album cover design at the Grammy Awards. His most famous work, which appeared on the album "Story Island," was dedicated to the Typhoon Morakot disaster. It won a 2010 Red Dot award.

Recently Taipei designers have performed superbly at major design competitions. They gain their inspiration from a desire to be different, a passionate pursuit that allows them to exceed limits and receive recognition on the international stage. Five award-winning designers of different ages who have attained such a level are: 1. Chen Wen-Long, who used a Transformers theme to promote the fifth generation of the SYM "Fighter" line of scooters; 2. Jennifer Tsai, whose Bai Ju Yue product line shows the beauty of eastern food and beverage implements; 3. Hsieh Jung-ya, whose ingenious defrost tray quickly defrosts food without the need for electricity; 4. Chou Yu-Jui, who created the stunning "Bubble Sofa" from 999 handwoven bamboo balls; and 5. Chen Yan-Ting, whose "Smooth Cover" gutter drains water without posing a danger to women in high-heel shoes. These designers are like missionaries who remain committed to their cause, building a strong foundation for design in Taipei.

Over the past several years Asia has turned its attention to design. This movement is apparent at international award events such as America's IDEA along with Germany's iF and Red Dot, where Taipei designers regularly perform well. The rest of the world is now paying attention. Talented, hardworking designers in the city regularly produce outstanding products. People are certainly the most valuable resource of Taipei’s creative industries. After developing basic skills in Taipei's advanced education system they branch out, each producing his or her own methods and styles.
For two years straight National Taiwan University of Science and Technology led the university ranking at Germany's iF competition, and in 2012 it placed first among Asian Pacific countries in Germany Red Dot. The school's overall ranking and the individual efforts from students were both highly impressive. Among the top 100 pieces in Germany's iF Concept Design Awards in 2012, Tatung University had 26. The university is a joint venture involving the well-known Tatung company and has produced many distinguished alumni in the industrial and engineering fields.
Taiwan's leading fashion design program is found at Shih Chien University. In 2012 Fan Hao-chun, a recent graduate of the program, won the jury prize at the inaugural Soy Cibelino festival held in Spain. His advanced cutting techniques and dramatic color contrasts impressed the international judging panel. Students at the industrial design department of National Taipei University of Technology designed a new wave paint can that won a bronze medal at America's IDEA awards and an iF award from Germany. 智慧綠建築的花博夢想館是張清華永續理念的實踐。The Pavilion of Dreams of the Taipei Flora Expo was a green building that put Chang Ching-Hwa’s idea of sustainability into practice.
Designers in Taipei share a common goal of pursuing the ideal. As Taipei strives to create a prescient, exemplary lifestyle, it must rely on civilization building from its designers. At the forefront of this movement is Chang Ching-Hwa the architect of Bioarchitecture Formosana. Chang was the lead architect for the Taipei Flora Expo's Pavilion of Dreams, Pavilion of Future and Pavilion of Angel Life. In her opinion, the most important task for design is to maintain harmony with the environment. Because of the limitless opportunities presented to Taipei through its natural landscape and the organisms it nurtures, Chang feels that future development projects must take these natural resources into account.
Meanwhile Wang Yul-Lin, the director of the Chinese Society of Interior Designers, calls water the most important element to consider. For Wang, future design in the city should focus on developing the local river culture. He said: “We should bring people closer to the river. Through design, we can change the face of the city.” Manfred Wang, the director of design for BenQ, drinks tea from a cup with BenQ Design etched on the bottom. Wang calls design a "conditional form of art." He takes the same approach to the living space in Taipei, where he feels design should be used to guide sunlight, air and water into the environment. Wang wants to add value to these natural elements by developing both function and form.
